ďAt one time, most of my friends could hear the bell, but as years passed, it fell silent for all of them. Even Sarah found one Christmas that she could no longer hear its sweet sound. Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me, as it does for all who truly believe.Ē ~ Chris Van Allsburg, The Polar Express

The fundraisers that are done to help families needing medical procedures at the local businesses just amaze me. Shout out to Taco John's and Pizza Hut especially for doing one almost weekly anymore. Even though they are 'big corporations' they help locally!

Somewhat unique. Both the Milwaukee and the Great Northern used this to cross the river, but using two sets of superimposed tracks so ... no switching necessary, each railroad able to stay on its "own rails." At least that's how I understood it. I walked it one day to look it over, but that was nearly 50 years ago.

It was hard for me to deal with the flat tire on the gramma car. I used an air pump to pump it up but it was flat within an hour so I cleaned out the trunk and got out the jack and jacked it up, filled the 'donut' spare tire with air and set about changing the tire. No good. The lug nuts were just too tight for me to get it off. I had to call a service truck and they charged me $65 to take the tire off and put the donut on. Tried to sell me tires but I was pretty sure I was going to take it out to WalMart. I had put the Hyundai on the battery charger but it kept setting off the car alarm...the battery was really dead. So when I had the donut on the gramma car I pulled it around and hooked up the gramma car with the jumper cables and let it charge for about 20 minutes. Then when it fired up I moved it around back and got the call from the service truck people with their price for 4 new tires, said thanks, took the gramma car out to Wally World and bought them there. I moved the pick-up next door and will leave it there overnight just so there is some rotation and movement of the vehicles.

What a pain to have 3 vehicles and all of them needing work! The Hyundai needs a new thermostat so that's why I haven't been using it in the 'rotation' and let the battery die. Now will have time to get all this taken care of.

It seems like there is always so much to do. It was hard to crawl around jacking up that car. My back is still bothering me quite a lot. It is harder to have to pay someone to help me when I know these are things I used to be able to do without any problem. But I also know that if I keep trying to do some of those kind of things myself I am going to end up in traction!

Got a lovely gift of Walleye. My mom's friend does a beautiful job of filleting the fish and then puts it in a ziplock bag and fills it with water and freezes it. I need to get a thank you note off to him.

Need to get a lock and key for the little topper on my new little pick-up. So it looks to me like the company that manufactured it is out of business. I went to 3 different places - they kept sending me somewhere else...and I LOVE that! "You would find more options if you went to Havre Hardware" "Have you checked at Marden?" etc.

So I end up at a place with a locksmith. The part I found online is $85. He can't even find that one. He looks up and says, "Run home and order one from WalMart for 11 bucks" and when it comes bring it down and I'll put it in for you." SCORE!!!

And it's rodeo time. I am not a fan...but hoping to get up to the fairgrounds on Sunday to watch the Indian Relay Races. Will go if it's not too hot!

They called this one "Rodeo Handstand"

Just got a call today that we will definitely start harvesting the winter wheat on Monday the 23rd. Will be a scramble with the Co. Fair this weekend and all that I have volunteered to do for that but will start with a small crew to cook for on Monday and not have the full crew in place until the end of the week.

i wanna go
where the sky is big
the mountains are tall
and the air is clean
.
i wanna go
where the rivers run
fast and wild and free
.
where nature is wider
than the widest sea
.
where there's more
than enough elbow room
for you and me
.
i wanna see the eagles
flying high and landing
on a mountaintop
.
i wanna smell the pine needles
in the evening as the stars
glitter in the sky above
so bright that you'd
swear you could reach up
and touch 'em
.
i wanna fall asleep with
you in my arms in a
place i love

I just had one of those amazing "Only in Montana" kind of experiences. I put a small window a/c in my mom's kitchen. I just rigged it in with cardboard, an old piece of particle board and some cardboard...just to get it in and working. I went out to Wally World and got some contact paper so I could wrap some of it to make it waterproof and then decided to just bite the bullet and go buy a piece of foam insulation. I knew they came in 4' X 8' sheets and that was way more than the 20" X 34" I needed and would have to have it cut down to be able to fit it in my old gramma car. So I was going to head out to a contactor's place and see if he had leftovers but they were closed so I went into Pro-Build.

They told me they had them in 4' X 8' sheets and asked how thick. I told them an inch or less. And I only needed a chunk about 20" x 35". One looks at the other and says, "Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" and they head around the corner. They had just received a new window. It was packed in foam insulation board. One was 3 inches thick and the other about 1/2 inch thick. I told him the 1/2 inch was fine but I would take both. Suddenly had an idea that I could use the 3" thick insulation on a basement window in the laundry room. Asked "How much?" and they refused to let me even give them money for a beer after work. Said it would just go to the recycle bin anyway. What a score and answered prayer. Had to do a little maneuvering to get it inside the car but when I got it home, I measured about 4 times before I cut it and it fits perfectly. Duct taped it in and it looks and works so much better. Sealed all along the edges. And now I get to take $12 worth of contact paper back to Wally World!

I know that this kind of stuff happens in other places. Heck, I've lived in lots of other states. But it seems like when I am needing 'a break' I always get one. I'm so grateful for the small businesses in my town!
