My 2 older kids used to clean out the garage at our last house at least once or twice a year - it never took very long for my DH to fill it up again...

One summer the youngest and I were at the cottage with my Mom when the boys decided to clean it out yet again. Apparently they kept the 'burn barrel' in the back yard going almost constantly while DH was at work, only allowing it to cool down while he was home. I tell you, the phone calls I got throughout that whole week from one or the other of them were quite the thing! "Mom, do you know what Rob / Dad did this time? Mom, do have any idea how much junk Dad's added this time? Kathy, did you tell the boys they could burn / garbage / clean the garage?" I soooo did not want to come home, that's for sure! The boys did a great job, in spite of their Dad (LOL) and the garage looked awesome! For a while, that is.

I want to de-stash the garage on Wednesday when all settles down again. I only have one room in the house to de-stash and that is hubby's workshop.

Yeah Jo!!! I was beginning to think that I am the only one here who doesn't know how to do any of these wonderful 'crafts'.... I'm not artistic either.

I bought some etching 'stuff' and am going to try my hand at doing some glass etching for presents for a couple of friends this year, but will be definitely relying heavily on the youngest, very artistic daughter for help with it.

I would love to see pictures of your eggs when they are all decorated. I love the Ukranian eggs! What a neat idea to put them on the Christmas trees.

I can't knit, can't sew, can't crochet. I went to a "stitch and bit_ _" club. Thought I would learn there, but alas I sat there and listened to all B_ _ _ _ing going on and held onto my cup with two hands and sipped my tea. It was great entertainment. I had fun with out learning the new skills I wanted to learn.

I do love doing PYSANKY (Ukrainian Egg Painting) I am not good at it, but I love it. I am getting better. So this year for Christmas I will be making some to hang on the Christmas trees. This will be my gifts to my sister-in-laws. Wish me luck. How many eggs do you think I can break before I get 7 finished. Better buy 3 dozen eggs to start.

Dawn,

I like what you said about home made being heart made...I knit and do calligraphy and art so give presents that I've made regularly...I am knitting my daughter a sweater for Christmas..and for my granddaughter's birthday last year I painted her a dragon...one year I made felted purses, and another year my daughter and I made beaded sachets for everyone....

We have always taught that gifts are precious and to be appreciated no matter what they are, not something you should just expect, and I talked to my my daughter when she was young and I talk to my grand daughter about less fortunate kids so she appreciates what she has.

We have had her watch programs on tv and the news that show kids in poorer countries and aftermaths of floods and hurricanes too....so she really understands it....

I don't know what I'd do if she wasn't caring....that would be hard...

I do think it depends if a child grows up getting handmade things. I know my children and grandchildren were brought up understanding that it takes more of an effort to make a gift than to throw a gift card or store bought item at them. Of course they still want the "label" items. I think the difference is some of my grandchildren are homeschooled and don't have the peer pressure.

It's hard, because she has only been a member of our family for just over 4 years now, and my DIL apparently really appreciates the fact that I never criticize her parenting (or anything else) skills... so I watch what I say.

Wow, as the old saying goes... Children learn what they live. I just sit my grand-children down and tell them that grandmama loves them very much and makes them special things because it takes her time and her love to make them special. They seem to "get it". It makes us ALL happy.

My older granddaughter (age 11)is totally into the whole label, price, and store name mentality. I would never bother to buy her any kind of clothing because I have already seen her reaction to what other people choose for her, and I do not like it! It galls me to death that her parents have allowed her to be this way!!!

I agree Cathi. I think that people would be surprised to know that children really do appreciate and love the gifts. I have one grand-daughter in particular that begs me to make her hat all the time. She really likes it if they are made with scraps of yarn.. the funkier the better. I tease her and call her Cyndi Lauper. Love ya, Dawn

Dawn, there are a lot of parents and grandparents out there you need to talk to. Birthdays are like Christmas when it comes to the toys. People have "play rooms" for their kids. What happened to playing in your room??? And if Birthdays are like Christmas, Christmas is over-the-top.

I never had kids and my nieces and nephews are all adults now so I don't have children to give to anymore, thank goodness. But when I did, I was the aunt who gave books and craft kits and learning games. They especially loved the books!

My mom tries to give a gift to each of her grandchildren (14) and great grandchildren (18 I think) so it HAS to be homemade. She does small, simple things and feels bad that it looks cheap compared to what the other grandparents can afford. But the kids really treasure things made by a grandmother, a greatgrandmother -- something she made especially for them.

Sad but true... however, I have come to the conclusion that it is MY JOB as the "grandmama" to teach them that homemade is HEART-made and to appreciate them.

You guys are so talented!

You are also lucky that you have family members who appreciate homemade gifts!! That seems to be so rare these days.

Even with all the people out of work, or in financial straits, the younger generation sure seems to be one where 'labels / brand names' and price matter the most.

Great free site. Just scroll down and click on any link and it will take you to another page with a list of free patterns. In checking this would work I found another one I like. Yikes!

Here's another site with lots of free patterns: www.craftown.com/crochet.htm
And, again, I found another project I want to do!

A lot of these patterns, especially for headbands, scarves, and hats, are fairly simple and don't take a lot of yarn or time. I did a skinny scarf last year in a couple of hours.

Bonnie, last year I found a bunch of quick and easy projects for hats, scarves, and earwarmers free on the internet. They work up fast and are something people can actually use. Those long, skinny scarves are still "in" this year if you have teenager girls on your list.

I think I am going to crochet each of them a earflap hat to wear when they are sledding. I have plenty of time to crochet and enough yarn. I should be able to get one done a day or every other day if I rest like I should. I may be able to sell a couple too at the rink. I had several compliments on the ones I finished for the family this week. I also may make some slippers if I get bored.
I will keep getting rid of the yarn and get rest too.

I have 8 now and one of them has 2 step-brothers that I now add to the list so that brings it to 10 little ones to "make" things or shop for. I'm like you.. I make a lot of their gifts. Good luck my friend. Love ya, Dawn

I sold some more books yesterday. I had to figure out a way to get Christmas presents for my grandchildren. last year I made them all scarves for winter and the year before I made some cute wallets. i was going to make them each a stocking this year but I ran out of time as it takes a month ffor each one. With eleven grandchildren it makes it very difficult each year.

My goal of clearing out the cluttter is progressing. I have given away some items. I have sold some of my quilt and crochet books, I gave some clothes to charity, and I even shared some extra food with the neighbors. I had an overabundance of tomatoes and they loved them, they have 7 children only the husband works.
I am still de-cluttering my head though. It is filled with thoughts of how to get through the fall and winter. DSD gets laid off in two more weeks and never works in the winter, she says her time is too valuable to work a menial job. Hubby has been told he will be laid off in january when the new company comes in as he has too many years on the job. My goodness he is only 53 and it will be hard to get another job and we have no savings. Ok that at least got it off my chest for a minute or two.

I'm with you on the cottage idea, Dawn. My neice works from home sewing and selling on ebay. However, she has to sit and sew all day, almost every day if she gets a lot of orders. I've helped her a dozen times or so and I'm not sure I could do that. But it is definitely an idea. I would just need to come up with an idea. She sews very simple things that she can cut in bulk and then sew one after another - like an assembly line. She does custom embroidery on the fabric first, which sets her apart. It surely is an option I might look into if nothing else turns up soon.

As to sitting with you feet under the desk, there are foot rests that fit under your desk that allow you to elevate your feet a little or a lot, depending. I even put mine on a filled box for a while until I found out my company would provide one for me. You might want to look into one of them even for you at home.

Love, laughter, and peace to you all today.

I wish I could help you all out, but things are rough up here too, so I guess all I can do is say this:

"I love you guys, you are all so AWESOME!!!" and send you all lots and lots of hugs...

Hi Cathi, I hope that you are able to have a miracle come through for you somehow. I sometimes think that if I could just figure out how to get a cottage industry going where I could sell the things I can crochet, I'd be able to stay home and wouldn't have to go back to my job when my leg is finally healed up. I worry about going back and having to have my legs down at the desk all the time again. I don't ever want to go backwards again. This has been a read learning experience for me. Bright blessings to you my friend. Love, Dawn

Hi Jo,
I can completely relate. I lost my job the day before Thanksgiving last year. I have not worked since and I've gotten only two interviews so far. Most of the time I don't even get a call or a reply of any kind to my applications, though I have gotten a few email rejections!

When I moved back to IL last year to take the job, I left a job I didn't really love in VA, but I had NO idea the IL job would end after only ten months! Now I so wish I'd stayed out east. I've contacted my former boss out there but they've had layoffs too.

I don't have nearly enough saved to ever retire and I will probably have to start living off of what I do have. I am legally blind and can't drive, but I'm not blind enough to be considered disabled. drive. We had started looking for a house to buy last year but have had to put that off indefinitely.

So I know something about what you and your DH are going through. It is certainly a tough time now for many of us. I hope your DH finds a permanent job very soon. Take care of each other.

It sounds like most of you have some great personal goals for the fall. I have not set any for myself. I know I should have some projects I should work on.

My sleep like many of you is so erratic. I am so tired all the time. I will see the doctor in a couple of weeks, maybe I have a vitamin deficiency. Who knows?

I am working harder then I have in years. Don't get me wrong I love my job. It's just at the end of the day I don't have much more in me to give.

I think I need a vacation. When DH gets a permanent job I will be able to take a vacation. We have a bit of money saved up but we need it for when DH is in between jobs. I don't get it. He is the man who has worked hard for the last 34 years. He looses his job due to the recession. He went back to school for a year, left with a 94 over all mark. top in his class. Jobs just are not there.

Oh well, I guess it is my turn to support the family. Doesn't hurt much.

I get carried away when I start typing. The purpose of this post was to think of a fall goal. Guess my goal is to type less and suck it up.

let your spark sparkle.
Hugs Jo

Bonnie, I agree with Dawn - not clutter at all. This is just a wonderful reminder that someone cares about you and is thinking of you! Enjoy all your great little surprises!

GAGRANNY that really sounds like a good challenge for you to work with!

Cathi - about your remark about the less helpful siblings and their health... suffice it to say that both of my brother and sister are in lousy physical condition. They both have major "JERK" issues, but I often wonder how unhappy they are with their own lives. I can't believe that anyone who has any sense of personal happiness or peace can behave the way they have throughout most of their lives, especially throughout Mom's last months, and the 3 years since she died. The 'estate' is finally settled (I hope!). We have all received our HUGE inheritance of about $1,000 each. Should I tell DH he can retire now? hehehe You have to keep a sense of humour about family, I think.

my de-cluttering received a small set back today. I received three packages from a friend (my birhtday present) she sent me some great Calgon (two boxes) she knows I never relax, some new towels, a wonderful one to wrap around myself afterwards, and 16 skeins of yarn, she does know about my projects and she helps me too. She also sent a great pendant and a bag of rocks from upper Michigan and told me that "no" she doesn't think I have rocks in my head LOL. It was great and I actually have a great project planned for the yarn so I can de-stash again.

I crochet 6 x 9 rectangles for HAP I have also put several of them together. It is a great project and you can sit and watch your favorite shows at night and make several. I have been doing it for over a year. Last year I made and donated over 2000 rectangles, it takes 49 to make an afghan for an injured military member.

DELIGHTFULE: I think that a challenge to participate more on spark people is an EXCELLENT fall challenge.

Pat, Cathi & Kathy... I am LOVING your cheerful chit chat and sparking along.. you might want to take it over to the general discussion thread and share with the rest of the team. I think that they'd love to be included and just are missing out because this is the challenge thread and not visited as often. I think that the 3 of your are awesome sparkers and would like to see you sharing over in the daily chit chat! Love to you all, Dawn

You are so right. I was telling some of my "e-friends" this week that I attribute crocheting and reading as the dietary aids that helped me shed my summer gain, this month. Now that I've accomplished that goal, I can move on with hopefully a steady loss per week. I am also challenging myself to do some type of exercise each day. I'm one who rarely moves. I don't care what type of exercise as long as I do something. Sometimes the flexibility exercises I do in the bed before rising is all I get accomplished. Other days I actually make it to the stationary bike. I hope eventually exercise will be easier and become a habit, lol. I also need to invest more time in decluttering my living space, sigh. Household chores are usually at the bottom of the list of things to do. So, that is a part of my fall challenge as well. I'm also challenging myself to participate more on SP. So, I hope to be chatting and getting to know you all better in the near future. Until then...
