Thanks for the tip, Lastchance, I never thought of scanning all this stuff. I will try that this week. I don't really have a problem with the "real" paper, it is the articles, sticky notes, recipes, poems, notes, website info, etc. that have me drowning. I'm really not sure if there is anything important tucked in between the nonsense so I feel compelled to go through the paper piece by piece.

I do like that scanning idea! Thanks!

Shatze, I know a lot of women who don't like to go places alone but I learned long ago that if I wait for company, I might never go. My 2nd vacation ever was solo. I flew to Myrtle Beach and spent a week there on the sand and doing shopping. One night I went to a nice restaurant and she seated me in the middle of the room. Everybody was there in couples and all along the edges of the room with the great views. If it was supposed to make me uncomfortable, it did. Embarrassed? No. Angry? Uh huh! But I was a lady and I enjoyed my meal and made eye contact and smiled and never looked back.

If I go out alone now and ask for a table and they ask how many, I say one. I don't say just one.

I sometimes go with others but I still sometimes go to movies, out to eat, the gym, church, shopping, and traveling - all alone. I enjoy my own company and while other women might feel sorry for me or think I'd a bit odd to do this, a lot of men have told me it is refreshing. My guy would think it odd if I didn't like to do things on my own.

Please don't miss out anything just because you'd be going alone. Alone is freeing; you are on your own time table; you can leave when you want and stay as long as you want. Shopping alone is especially wonderful.

Thank you Dawn for the support. Im hoping it will help to tone me up, lose weight and it will also get me out of the house at least three days a week. Ive become sort of a recluse since i retired as i dont like to go out places alone so i stay home. Thanks again.

Kathy and Cathi - Good luck in your paper decluttering. I wish I could help you. I'm the one my family calls when they need help cleaning out closets etc. Think of it as a game - try to have fun with it and it won't seem like such a chore. Inviting friends in to help can make it fun, too. Also, I tell those I work with that if they haven't missed it in a year, they won't miss it in the future, so recycle, give away, sell, throw away - whatever is available in your area so that you will feel like you've done something to help someone else. As for papers, letters, notes, pictures - scan them into your computer and back up to a disc. You will have them forever - and they won't be clutter laying on a shelf. As for financial records - depends on what they are, so you're better off checking with an accountant for that. Once you have everything cleared out, you will feel so free!!!

I just rejoined curves on Friday. Was a member about 4 years ago and then had to quit because of a hip replacement and complications after that. So i will be working out at least three days a week and hopefully that will lead to my being more accountable two more days a week on my own. Thanks everyone for the great threads . They get me motivated .

I only picked one personal goal for this challenge and it is a bit like one of yours. I don't have an office though and what has happened is that paper is everywhere: kitchen, dining room, bedroom, and two "bedrooms" upstairs. It always grates on me a little and then I need to find something in a hurry and I about have a fit!

I have so much paper and I'm afraid (that is a terrible word to use for paper but that is the word I always use) to get rid of anything without reading it first, which of course slow the process way down.

So I set myself a cautious but respectable goal of 15 minutes a day. I've missed a few days and some days I've done extra. I bought 2 2-drawer filing cabinets about a year ago and they are still in the garage waiting to be sanded and painted (got them used). Since it is such a hard project for me, I decided baby steps would work best.

Another person could knock this out in a day or less but unless Peter Walsh comes to help me, it will take me much longer. But even with just 15 minutes a day I feel more in control.

Just don't ask me to find anything in a hurry!

Thanks Dawn!! Reading everyone else's goals really made me stop and think about what I need to do for myself to keep going in the right direction.

I'm here cheering for all of you, too. I just know that all of these goals that are posted here are truly doable if we are all supportive of each other.

I'm glad that I found this thread today. What an awesome idea this is, to put our goals down where others can see them. I think it will go a long way toward making me accountable, something I desperately need....

So, here goes.....

1. Eat something for breakfast at least 3 times per week or better.

2. Eat before supper time at least 3 times per week.

3. Take my medication properly and check my sugars at least once a day. Get the numbers back where under control again.

4. Get up and move more, even if it is just walking around the house or better yet take one of the dogs for a walk EVERY DAY!

5. Spend at least 10 minutes a day in my office going through the last of my Mom's 'stuff' and shredding what doesn't legally have to be kept any longer. Clearing off flat surfaces like the top of the different book shelves is also a priority, as is getting stuff into the filing cabinet where it belongs! Shred or toss anything that doesn't absolutely have to be here!!!

Regaining my office would be such an uplifting thing for me I think, although I also know that it will be hard to let go of the last of Mom's stuff, it is time, and I MUST do it for my own sake. This has dragged on way tooooooo long. The clutter is dragging me down to where it just feels overwhelming at times, but now that I have put it in writing, and have you, my friends to hold me to keeping my word - I am accountable and must do it!!

For me, short term, attainable goals work best so I am setting myself a two week time frame in which to do these 5 goals. After that I can decide to either keep things the same, or to up the ante, so to speak.

Sorry for the long ramble!

I vote for FUTURE COUGAR too! Your goals sound gread, "LASTCHANCE" especially what you said about putting yourself at the top of your list. If you don't take care of yourself first, you won't be able to do all the things you want to do for others.

You are all so awesome! I have gained a lot of weight in the last few years - especially in the last several months. Reading your goals is very motivating and makes me realize I need to set a few myself. I just started Spark yesterday and am spending a lot of time looking through the Spark site. There is soooo much info!
I guess I need to learn to put myself closer to the top of my list. I end up taking care of everyone else - and no time for me. I baby sit my grandkids (which I LOVE doing), some days taking them to school and/or picking them up from school. I'm helping my daughter-in-law with homework because she decided she wanted to go back to college for a more rewarding career - and also to set an example to her 2 daughters. My mom was diagnosed with cancer in May, so I've been busy running back and forth to her house taking food, doing laundry, etc. It wouldn't be so hard if she lived in town, but she doesn't. I also quilt - a passion of mine - and try to make 4 quilts a month for Project Linus.
Anyway, I need to concentrate on getting sleep and exercise, and planning my menus better so I don't take the easy way out (fast and high-caloried) at mealtime. SO---------
My Speciic Goals are:
1 - Get a minimum of 7 hours of sleep a night.
2 - Exercise a minimum of 150 minutes a week.
3 - Plan daily menus a day in advance.

I'll just tell you the truth from the bottom of my heart... spark people has changed my life and I am NOT EVER going back! I'll be sparking 'til the end of time! I am so happy and excited about being part of the spark people family. I am so grateful for the friends/family that I have found here. It doesn't show in my blogs or writings, but I am pretty much an isolator here in "real life"... spark people has allowed me to BE ME without fear or embarrassment! I am going to start going out MORE in the real world and allowing myself to BE ME here! People are going to be shocked at the new Dawn! LOL Love ya...

Dawn, thanks for the reminder. It is a good idea to take out goals and see where we are in relationship to were we planned to be. And it sounds like you are meeting your goals! Good work. Now I just hope that wound starts to close. It is wonderful that you haven't used the walker all month!!! I'm sure that cane will be gone soon too. You are a trooper and an inspiration to us all. I thought that I would re-visit my Fall goals and let you know what's going on so far:

1. Get this wound healed: I have been seen by the wound clinic doctor twice now. There is improvement but it is still the same size 6x8. I am now wearing compression stocking to help with the leg swelling and putting a treated bandage on the wound daily.

2. WALKING: I tried several times to walk at the track or other places and have basically decided that walking in the WATER is going to be my plan of action. ON Sunday I got 1087 steps on the track, On Monday 1100 steps in the pool. Tuesday I walked at the pool but didn't count my steps. Wednesday I jogged at the pool instead of walking. Today: I walked the long trek around the hospital and to the wound clinic. It's a doozy! I didn't stop ONCE to sit down. That's cool. I have not used my walker the entire month of September!!! WooHoo. It's a cane now and hopefully in the near future I'll toss that aside.

3. I am still trying to lose 50 pounds by 01/01/10. I started on Sept 1st (I had started earlier but a friend in the challenge I am in had not lost anything so I committed to "pretending" I had lost none and started from scratch. I have lost 9.8 pounds since then. That means that I am on target to DO IT.

I feel good about my goals and just need to keep up what I am doing. I can't have lazy days like today. I need to go exercise. Bye for now. Love ya, Dawn

My goal this fall is to get enough sleep. Tipically, when I return to work, I allow myself to stay up later than I should. As a result, all week long I'm fatigued. In turn I eat to feel better. I have read many times that lack of sleep had been shown to cause weight gain. I know for a fact that is true. So I have to organize my day in such a way that I get to be early enough to get atleats 7-8 hours sleep.

I'm so glad for you!

Thanks for mentioning the compression stockings. I wore them after my foot surgery but got out of the habit of it. Guess I wear them today as I'm joining my sisters for a walk this afternoon.

They gave me something called Ultram. I have taken 1 about 1.5 hours ago and I feel GREAT.. don't know if it's the pill or the compression stockings! Both feel good. Life is GREAT! Thanks again... Dawn emoticon

Thanks for the advice Jo.. I took my list of questions AND my soon-to-be DIL with me and between the two of us we got all my questions asked and answered.. AND..when I thought of another one that resulted from what we were told there, I called back and talked to the nurse who was VERY nice and gave me some great helpful advice. It was an excellent visit AND I can keep on working out in the pool! WooHoo!

Jo, that is really very good advice and more people should try it.

One of our patients used to bring a list with her to every recheck with a list of her meds and any symptioms, pains, questions, etc she'd had since her last visit. This can be very helpful to your doctor. And if you doctor doesn't like it or won't answer your questions so that it makes sense to you, find another doctor.

I know that I often forget something I wanted to ask or mention because the visit is usually short and the doctor is running it not me. So I also will make a note of anything I want to ask or things I think my doctor needs to know.

Dawn I am intimidated by doctors when I visit them I am all mumbles. A friend told me to write down questions I want to ask. Whenthe doctor answers them take down notes. When you get home you can go over the notes. I have done this and it helps me process the information the doctor has given me. be it good or bad. Don't know if this will help you.

I hate giving advice, I am a better listener. this has helped me.

I don't like some of them myself but my sweetie is a doctor and he is a wonderful doctor -- careful, kind, patient, sensitive, and extremely smart. I hope you get someone even better than him tomorrow. You deserve the best care and don't you settle for less.

Honestly I've had a rough day but it's because of FEAR. I had a great workout at the pool and I am NOT in too much pain. I am just scared to pieces about going to the wound clinic tomorrow. I am scared of dr's anyway.. and this is VERY IMPT to my health. Thanks for asking. Love you, Dawn emoticon

Jo, sounds like you have a lot going on. If you aren't used to setting goals, there are some good articles on Spark to give you some ideas. And if you make those lists and they don't work, make different lists! Just keep tweeking and changing until they work for you. And keep those goal lists where you will see them. I know it is easy to forget what I'm working on if I'm not (constantly!) reminded.

It sounds like you all have great goals. I am not a good goal maker. I one of those people who fly by the seat of her pants. This usually works for me because if I fall the fat on my butt just bounces me back.

Now that the butt is getting smaller, I wonder if it will be as easy to bounce back.

I would like to be able to plan my days better. I work 11 hours a day. I have a pick up and delivery schedule for schools and children. I need a menu plan, a cooking plan, and a sleeping plan. I can do this new schedule if I just get the sleep I need.

So I guess I will be making schedule to follow for my fall goals. I will start on it tomorrow. Why do something today when I can put off till tomorrow.

Kidding,. I just need some sleep tonight. Might need to take a pill. I hope not.

Cathi: You are correct to set the little goals. Clutter leads to depression. Depression leads to isolation. You won't be out there MOVING like you need to in order to lose weight, if the paperwork piles up and you get depressed. Good for recognizing that and getting it taken care of! I am doing two challenges right now.. but I have the main focus of the 50 pounds off by 01/01/2010. What I DID was incorporate that same challenge into the 2nd challenge that I joined (a BL team) and am trying to get HALF of that 50 pounds gone in the 10 weeks that I am in the biggest loser challenge. I am hopeful. I know that you are I are both in the same challenge so LET'S DO IT TOGETHER! What do you say?

Martha: It's amazing how many people are influenced by the change of weather. I hope that you will keep sparking with us and avoid isolating. I am sorry about the weight gain. I agree with you. I can NOT guestamate my foods. I have to rely on my cups, measuring spoons, and digital scale. My eyes are BROKEN. I weigh and measure everything I eat or drink. It's the only way that I can DO IT and keep within my calorie levels.

HIKER6699: GREAT goals.. and very attainable. WOW.. lofty goal to be able to do 4 miles in 90 minutes.. but also doable. Best wishes to you my friend! I'm cheering for you.

For 2010:

1. I'm now weigh 305. I want to be at 285 or lower.

2. I'm now able to walk 75 min. with out getting winded & covering 2.5 miles. The goal for 2010 is to be able to go 90 minutes & cover 4 miles.

Is to keep moving when the weather changes and not try to hibernate.

I have just learned I can not guesstamate!!! I have to weigh, measure, food I eat. In an weeks time I gained 5.5 lbs. I don't totally know why dr said that time brings on from 2-5 lbs so we will see next week..

To never ever give up no matter how discouraged I get.

To participate more. Make better use of time, then I can move more!!!

Dawn, that is a wonderful personal goal and I think you'll be tossing that cane away before long. You are one determined lady! And when you said "I am also still trying to meet that challenge goal...losing 50 pounds by Jan! Most of the things that I am doing deal to that challenge and how to meet it! " I thought, duh, Cathi - that needs to be your main focus too. I think I've maybe gotten too tied up in too many challenges and too much other extraneous stuff when I just really need to make sure that what I do each day moves me closer to that goal.

So.........I hope I'm not distracting myself, but my personal goal is clearing paper clutter. I just spent 20 minutes sorting, pitching, filing paper. I didn't make much of a dent but I did something. This doesn't sound like it could effect my weight but it is definitely making me unhappy, uncomfortable, and guilty. So just 20 or 30 minutes dealing with it a day keeps it from bothering me so much.

Best to all of us in meeting our personal goals for Fall!

My biggest goal for the fall is to get this leg wound healed up. However... the next biggest is to get myself WALKING! I am going to start today by going to the new walk park that they have built here in the town I live in. I am going to start out slow.. eventually I want to throw my cane away too! I am also still trying to meet that challenge goal...losing 50 pounds by Jan! Most of the things that I am doing deal to that challenge and how to meet it! Love ya, Dawn emoticon emoticon
