Hello,

I've been diagnosed since 2000. But have had PCOS for longer than that!

Been struggling with it as well, but some of it is my fault (not eating properly, or taking my meds properly). Being on Metformin helps A LOT.

What symptoms do you have? Are you on meds?

Nice to meet you by the way :)

huh, the Drums Alive sounds interested. Let me know how it goes.

Yeah, I live at about 15 min walk of that Sushi place. Although I'm a sushi lover, I've never actually been there yet. It hasn't been opened all that long.

What type of work do you do?

Drums Alive is traditional aerobic exercises with rhythms of drumming on a stability ball (held in place with a stability ball holder). I saw it in action today when I did my tour of the facility and thought it looked really challenging but fun.

The Zumba class I am looking at is at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex. I know I'll look mighty special my first class, bit I think it will still be fun trying, and even better when I learn the moves.

I know a couple of people who live in the Pineview area. What I particularly like about that area is that it is close to Sushi Kan. OMG... if I lived near that place I would be in BIG trouble! ;) Have you been there?

You're lucky you can get out for a walk on your lunch break. I run an office solo until 8pm Mon-Wed plus work weekends... so no escaping for fresh air for me.

I struggle a lot with my sweet tooth when I settle down to sit on the couch in the evening and watch TV. I do pretty well for the entire day and then I screw things up in the evening. On nights when I have my zumba or badminton, I normally do pretty well. So if I keep myself busy, I'm good.

I didn't like the Zumba class the first time I went because I had no clue what I was doing. Once I got to learn the moves, I started really enjoying it. I like the songs my instructor picks and the routines she does are more on the dancy side than the full on areobics side. I have my zumba class on Wednesdays.
Where is yours taking place?

Zumba instructors can differ in style. My Zumba instructor had a remplacement instructor a couple of weeks ago and I didn't enjoy the replacement instructor as much.

I leave in the east end currently in the Pineview area. Not far from the Silver City.

What's Drums Alive?

My sweet tooth is what ruins me too! I am trying to get rid of it by reducing sweet foods (even artificial sweeteners) from my diet, except for fruit. Even fruit, I think it can trigger my cravings for more sweets. It's tough! The reality is though that I cannot deprive myself entirely, so when fruit isn't cutting it and I have a sweet craving for days, I will have something worthwhile and good quality... like quality chocolate or ice cream. I find if I try to fill that sweet spot with a Frankenfood it doesn't cut it and the craving continues.

Metformin didn't agree with me when I tried it with my first endocrinologist. This time, it's been better. I usually start off with a few days of "issues", but then it clears. It hasn't helped my blood sugars yet though, and I know that diet and exercise will help that more than it can. I am not a fan of taking daily meds, so I hope to eventually be off the Metformin and also the high blood pressure pills I was also recently prescribed. I am not going to let my weight and PCOS slowly kill me.

I am actually going to be trying my first Zumba class later this week, as the membership I got is also with the City of Ottawa. I am looking forward to trying it, as well as Drums Alive and some aquafit classes. :) I used to live in the East end near Silver City and used to do classes at Ray Friel... but it was pretty far as a regular routine.

I'm sure, together, we can find ways to improve our condition and get the weight off for good!

Hi Frumpy!

I'm glad to be able to connect with someone else in Ottawa who is living with PCOS. I've been trying to find a PCOS support group ever since I was diagnosed but was not able to. I live in Ottawa East and work in Ottawa South.

I'm sorry to hear that you are struggling to get pregnant a second time. It sounds like we are in similar situations, for me I'm trying to get pregnant for the firt time. No luck so far. I met with a Fertility Doctor last September after my husband and I had been trying for more than a year without any results. After going through various tests, my fertility doctor diagnosed me with PCOS so he referred me to a Weight Loss doctor. As well, my fertility doctor prescribed Prometrium because my body was/is not producing enough progesterone which results in a very irregular cycle. This month, I'm trying out a drug to induce ovulation - it's called Serophene (clomid).

My blood sugar is in the higher range of normal but I am not taking any medications to regulate it. I've reduced the amount of carbs I eat which has helped me to regulate it more. I mostly only eat whole foods and fruit and veggies althought I'm struggling because I have sweet tooth (let's just say that i'm pretty good at making good nutrition choices up until the evening). I was diagnosed last November and have lost close to 20 lbs since then. My health & weight loss management doctor has me on a 1400 calorie high protein weight loss plan. I've been struggling to follow it the last few months and my weight has not really changed.

How is the Metformin working for you?

I've signed up in some exercise classes through the city of Ottawa. I stumbled on a Zumba class and I love it. I have fun and it doesn't feel like exercise, I do that once a week. I also play badminton once a week as well. My other exercise right now is trying to get in 30 minutes of walking during my lunch break - my goal this week is to try to do that at least 3 times.

I've added you as a sparkfriend. I'm in need of a buddy as well. I've never met or chatted with anyone else who has this endocrine disorder before. I'm excited at the prospect of being able to do that.

I'm in Ottawa West and have PCOS. I was told I would most likely need fertility drugs or procedures to get pregnant, but in Feb 2007 it happened on the first try without meds or anything. Having my son even regulated my periods once they returned.
Now I've been trying for child #2 since October 2009 and no luck so far. Actually, that's not true. I am positive I miscarried when we first started trying, but nothing since. I am now taking Metformin, which my doctor believes will help, and I will be seeing an endocrinologist again in the near future, to help with getting pregnant with #2 and to help keep an eye on my blood sugars (I am prediabetic right now). I had gestational diabetes with my first child, and I know from that experience I MUST do what I can to ensure I do NOT become diabetic!!

Are you taking any medication for your PCOS??

It can be so hard with PCOS to lose weight, and to have children. I've been gaining and losing the same 5lbs for MONTHS (almost a year now), but just haven't been successful at keeping it all up. For me, my food intake needs to be maticulous to 1500 calories or less AND the exercise MUST be done at least 4x per week. This can be exhausting from day to day, in addition to being a mom, a wife, working full time, and feeling tired a LOT. But... it's not impossible. I've recently come to the decision that this is not an option. If I WANT to buy regular-sized clothes again, improve my blood sugars, reduce my blood pressure, feel GOOD about myself again, and hopefully have another child... I NEED to do this for me. Eating right and exercising shouldn't feel like punishment. Since when is doing something good for ourselves a punishment?! I HAVE to break the routine of being lazy and not caring... and do what I need to do to get what I deserve for myself. I am so DONE with being 100lbs overweight and feeling tired all the time. I will NOT let PCOS get in my way of the life I deserve... so now is the time to make it happen.
I cancelled my gym membership last week to a place that didn't inspire me. Today I signed up somewhere else that I believe will fit me, my personality and lifestyle better. It's small things like this... to be aware when something's not a good fit for you and changing it, that makes this journey a little easier. Yes... I'm still gonna have to drag my tired butt to the gym and do the work, but it will be more enjoyable for me now that I have more options.
I'm definitely in need of support and buddies... and am always happy to be one too. If you think we share some common ground, feel free to send me a message. :)

I've been diagnosed with Polycystic Overay Syndrome in November 2009 and am struggling with this endocrine disorder. I'm making lifestyle changes to alliviate my symptoms and try to get pregnant. I am wondering if there is anyone else in the Ottawa area living with PCOS. Just looking for people to relate with and share ups and downs.
