My Jan 2013 success strategy includes:

At least 30 minutes of cardio 6 days a week
3 days of strength and interval training weekly
Eat 6 freggies daily
Drink 8 glasses of water daily
Eat within my calorie range 6 days per week
Enjoy one weekly free day (if I meet my other goals above) but I will not exceed my daily calorie range by more than 150 calories on that free day (I don't want to go overboard).

I will see how this goes for January and adjust it if necessary in February.

I pledge to continue my aquafitness when I start work again on Jan 17th. (I work on call at a local CEGEP so I am off for weeks and then on for a month or two.) I tend to stop my exercise program when I work. And since I will be working until the end of April this time, I cannot afford to go that long with no exercise! So, 3 times a week, at 5:45, I will be in the pool. So there!

emoticon Great attitude to have....remember every twinge of pain say Thank you Lord, 3 times over...I learned that from a Christian Sister. She told me that if Christ could bear all the pain he did for us, who were we to not bear just a little more than what we think we could handle for him. And by the way she had smacked the you know what out of her elbow on a walk in commercial seafood freezer lock. Och! and before I knew it her pain was aleviated. She had quite a big bruise for a couple of weeks...But I learned how to stay away from pain pills......

I'll be getting back to my physical therapist to start a new year of Physical therapy. I know it will be hard, but I'm determined to do it. My SI joint will be a problem, but I hope to strengthen
my joint area. My lumbar will have to deal with the pain, along with pain killers, lol.

emoticon If you can't get that 60 minutes of Cardio, try to commit to at least 10-15 minutes at least 4 times a week... I was pushing myself to 2 hours of walking 7 days a week when I first joined and it took a toll on my bad leg and I had to reevaluate my situation. I got with my Dr. and we came up with a livable plan and so far it's working for me. the weight is coming off slower, but thats ok. The main thing for me is to feel better and to breathe better.
I really loved gettng out there to walk, even with my disabilities, it was so refreshing no matter how long it took. I did have to reframe my mind however to the fact that I was no longer going to be able to walk that long. So I try to do whatever it takes to be uplifting and active...even getting on the laptop or talking to my puppies.

emoticon You are so welcome. I know it was a real eye opener for me. There is also a fellow Spark frend ITSMATT, he is not for everyone. but he is very honest and out spoken about his weightloss and the challenges that he faced getting where he wanted to be. He also help open my eyes to being completely honest with my self on all my trackers. We don't need to lie to ourselves if we truly want to get healthy... even track that little taste when cooking dinner, it counts. You might night think so, but it can add up. And that school shooting set me off on a binge, and I'm not usually a binge eater. but I had to get out of the living room and just block out all those images of the children...Finally I stopped eating and got on the laptop and read this article...and it just wowed me..I'm just glad someone else got some use out of it too..

Thank you for sharing that article, Survivor61! As I read it, I could see myself and how I respond to events in my life. After reading it I pledge to try it when I am faced with situations that normally would lead to me eating---and those happen often, daily, in my job!

So, I pledge to respond by getting grounded, doing a reality check and putting it in perspective.

Thanks!

Hi Ladies I just read this amazing article thought you might like it....

What is the single, most common problem that most dieters face when trying to lose weight? Will power? Nah. Temptation? Sometimes. Emotional eating? Bingo! That’s why it takes so much more than good intentions and information about nutrition and exercise to be successful. The ability to manage difficult situations and feelings effectively—without turning to food and eating—is a necessary foundation for a successful weight loss plan and healthy lifestyle.

Fortunately, there are many proactive steps you can take to keep functioning on all your mental cylinders during tough times. These steps range widely from basic relaxation techniques to the development of a reliable support network. Other options include: Keeping a food journal to help you identify your emotional eating triggers
Cultivating mental and emotional well-being through practices like meditation, mindfulness, massage, and yoga
Developing good problem solving skills
Turning to the Message Boards for help and support when you need it; offering help to others as a way to get your mind off your own troubles and gain a little perspective on things
But all of these things take time, and there are many instances when you need something you can do right now, to keep yourself grounded, focused and able to make good decisions. After all, you don’t always have time to take a walk, relax in a hot bath or call a friend to talk things over. That’s what we’ll be talking about here—a 3-minute trick for handling stressful situations in the moment.

Minute 1: Stay Grounded
Emotional eating happens when you lose your connection to your grounded self. Stress itself is not what makes you reach for something to eat. In fact, stress is often a good thing and your grounded self knows this! We need the physical stress of exercise to keep our bodies in good shape just as we need the stress of intellectual and emotional challenges to keep our minds healthy.

Nine times out of ten, what really leads to emotional eating is getting caught in a "mind storm" of worst-case scenarios, projections, misinterpretations, and all the emotional overreactions that come with these thoughts. This "storm" turns a manageable challenge into something that makes you feel helpless, overwhelmed, ashamed or afraid—and sends you to the kitchen to find something to stuff those extreme feelings. When you can stay grounded in the moment of stress, you have many more options.

Here are some simple ideas to keep you grounded when something (or someone) pushes your buttons and your feelings start to spiral out of control: Take a few deep breaths. (You can also count to 10, if that helps.) If the stressful situation involves someone else, take a timeout and agree to continue the discussion in a few minutes.
Remind yourself where you are. Take a look around, noticing and naming the colors and shapes in the space around you.
Notice the physical sensations you are experiencing. Whether it's a sinking feeling, turmoil in your stomach, tension in your hands or jaw, restricted breathing, or heat on the back of your neck, try to name the feelings that go with the sensation. Is that sinking feeling fear, or dread? Is the heat a symptom of anger?
The idea here is to stay in your body and in the moment—with what’s real—instead of going inside your mind where all those unreal scenarios are just waiting to get spun out-of-control.

Minute 2: Reality Check
Once you’re calm enough to start thinking productively, put all those thoughts that are clamoring for attention inside your head through a quick reality check. Here are several very common thought patterns that have no place in reality. Do any of these apply to you? All or nothing thinking
Example: You go over your calorie limit or eat something on your “forbidden” list, and then decide to keep eating because you’ve already “blown it” for today. Reality: Weight loss is not a one-day event. If you stop overeating now, you’ll gain less and have less to re-lose later. That’s something to feel good about!

Reading your own thoughts into someone else’s words
Example: Someone made a mildly critical or unsupportive remark to you, and you feel completely devastated. Reality: The more bothered you are by such remarks, the more likely it is that you are being overly critical of yourself. When you treat yourself with respect, what others say won’t matter nearly so much.

Either-Or thinking
Example: You make a mistake or have a bad day and feel like a complete and hopeless failure. Reality: No one does well all the time. Mistakes are a necessary and valuable opportunity to learn—if you don’t waste them by getting down on yourself.

Taking care of other people’s business
Example: Something is going badly for someone you care about, and you feel responsible, or pressured to fix it. Reality: People need to learn from their own problems. You aren’t doing anyone a favor by trying to fix things just to make yourself feel better.
Minute 3: Putting Things in Perspective
Most common problems that you face in everyday life are much easier to handle when you keep them in perspective and avoid making mountains out of molehills. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to make sure you aren’t in the mountain-making business: How big a deal is this, anyway? If I knew I was going to die in a week, would this be something I would want to spend this minute of my remaining time on?
Will any bad things happen if I postpone thinking about this until I have more time to figure things out?
Do I have all the information I need to decide how to respond to this? Do I really know what’s going on here, or am I making assumptions? Am I worrying about things that might not even happen? What do I need to check out before taking action?
Is there anything I can do right now that will change or help this situation?
Am I trying to control something I can't, like what other people think, say, or do?
Have I really thought through this problem, and broken it down into manageable pieces I can handle one-at-a-time?
Use this approach whenever your thoughts or situations begin to feel overwhelming, and you'll quickly find that the mountains that seem impossible at first can quickly morph into what they really are—manageable hills that you DO have the ability to climb. All it takes is three little minutes of your time.

TO Succeed, I WILL (for January)

I am so stoked about being about to see indentions below my girls. For the first time, I believe the abs are freeing themselves from the layers and layers of blubber. They are singing (literally after Pilates) and someday there will be a pack...probably not a six-pack, but at least a pack of muscles.

So, to succeed, I will continue through December tracking my foods, and working out everyday. Looking forward to disappearing blubber and reappearing muscle!

emoticon that Sandy left you guys in such a mess. But I know you will get back into the groove of things. It's hard when things are out of whack to eat healthy and at least you had something to eat. When I saw all those people with out food my heart just sank to my feet. And I couldn't believe the Mayor actually was going to go through with that marathon. What was he thinking , right...I'm so proud of you..you made it through with minimum weight gain and your ready to get back on track. Your my heroes emoticon

As a reward for myself for sticking to my diet, fitness, and water intake as per my Spark plan my husband and I went out I bought myself a new pedometer. The very best baseball player in the major leagues (Miguel Cabrera .330) this year got less than 7 hits out of every 20 at bats! I will succeed by keeping on swinging. That means not focusing on my failures. No matter what the scale says, I'll get back in the box.

emoticon I am up to 75 minutes of walking now and have accomplished my goal of drinking 8 glasses of water daily. I have been recording my meals on a daily basis , I still need to raise my caloric levels a little to meet my nutritional needs. Since adding the herbal tea and honey with lemon, it's actually helped with keeping my stomach a bit calmer. Thanks to the Spark members who advised me on that. I'm no longer choking all the time. Thinking about my you guys my doctors. emoticon emoticon

emoticon Ms D you are just as beautiful as the goddess. emoticon I love your positive additude. And your right about the walk outside, especially this time of the year. It is so beautiful right now. I'm hoping the rain doesn't ruin my spark streak for walking as I don't have a treadmill and I'm up to 75 minutes now. emoticon And trust me that is a huge accomplishment for me. I was paralyzed for 2-1/2 yrs on my right side and left with a lot of residule side efffects. I have to walk with a cane, have COPD,glaucoma, indoor ,outdoor allergies that you just wouldn't believe. But I do not intend to let my health get in the way anymore..you have inspired me so much. Some people call me a kook, but looking at your picture, I can see an auro about you...I believe that God is going to see you to your goals and that there is going to be a brand new you. Luck has nothing to do with it, it is all you!! And you have been blessed with the strength to DO THIS... emoticon You will SUCCEED!!

Continue doing what I have been doing in the month of October. I feel better, have more energy and have learned to track what I eat....no matter how bad my day has been. And it is easy to "forget" what you have eaten!

I have started many times and go for a couple weeks and then go back to old habits. This cycle has gone on for too long. This time, I decided to take little steps with changes and not try to do "all the right things" all at once.My first 4 little goals: track all my food (as painful as that might be and to be honest with myself about it) drink 8 glasses of water a day, 10 min of exercise a day and write an inspirational quote on my dry erase board everyday.
So far, this is day 3 and it is going well. Doesn't feel like I have had to make a MAJOR lifestyle change. emoticon

Creating new habits. I'm at that point and need suggestions. The movies are entertainment that my husband and I love. We just love good movies and sometimes bad ones. Anyway, at the movies, even before we go-just the thought of going means===POPCORN and sometimes some CANDY. A very, very bad habit. I have done the following a couple of times: We go pick out a movie and go and settle into our seats with popcorn and candy.

Next day, the scale is up 2 lbs. That is after I had just lost a pound or two. Now, it will take me a few days of diligence to get those pounds off and maybe a pound more. I mean I do achieve the weight coming off but my God, I seem to do this over and over.

I need a strategy to stop this ridiculous behavior.

Anybody have this happen to them and they have licked this behavior, please share.

Thank you emoticon

I want to keep adding new healthy habits, a few at a time so that they become permanent changes and a way of life. In the last three months I have conquered two, eating after nine PM, and having an evening routine. I am working on excersise three days a week.

I just finished day two and have logged everything I have ate today and yesterday. I have even gotten in more exercise. I have even done exercises with a spark video. But what I love so far is the information supplied here and the responses from others that are working hard to do this. I want to be able to keep doing this until I reach my goal that I won't reach until September 2013. But what a great way to go into the New Year with some good habits and new friends. emoticon

Also focus on getting more sleep and tracking, as well as, drinking 8 glasses of water daily.

I sure wish that this topic could read the correct month in which we are posting. Or just leave it as
