Crawfish boils here in the south is a rite of spring! Although we do some in the fall as well. We break out those cajun spices but the good news is that crawfish is FAT FREE! And they are so much trouble to peel that it takes you a long time to eat much!

Had book club last night and even though I'd just seen most of the women just about a week ago... once again I received compliments on looking like I'd really lost weight and looking good. That really felt great!

It's interesting that being noticed for my efforts boosts my resolve.

Thanks Sonia.B!

I let loose yesterday and just tried to enjoy Easter Brunch. It was a pleasant surprise to me that I naturally could feel when it was time to stop the eating. Though I didn't get on line yesterday to track anything I am confident I was within my calorie range or very close to it. Now to get back in the groove of exercise and tracking.

Anxious to hear more about the book HAJEWL, please be sure to check in with us.

Way to go HAJEWL! Be sure to tell us if you think it's good book - it sounds good but I haven't read it. It just seemed like a good symbol for our team. We have one member of our team from Egypt and she was able to order this book from Amazon and got it in less than a week! I thought that was pretty cool.

So goofy me, I had to go on the scale again this morning just to see with my own eyes that the difference is really real... and it is! Now that's about as much obsessing as I'll allow. Next week I w/i again only because its my goal date on 4/16 but then after that I'm backing off the scale. I've decided to w/i only at my Spark monthly anniversaries and then every other week, if that. It's time to make the shift to measuring by how I look and feel in my clothes.

Had a rough morning with some stiffness in my back but once I saw the sun outside I just had to overcome the back pain and get walking! Feeling great now. I hope everyone else enjoys the day today... It's Friday! Woohoo!

Woman vs Game Warden

A couple went on vacation to a fishing resort up north. The husband liked to fish at the crack of dawn; the wife preferred to read.

One morning the husband returned after several hours of fishing and decided to take a short nap. The wife decided to take the boat out. She was not familiar with the lake so she rowed out, anchored the boat, and started reading her book.

Along comes the Game Warden in his boat, pulls up alongside and says, "Good morning, Ma'am. What are you doing?"

"Reading my book," she replies as she thinks to herself, "Is this guy blind or what?"

"You're in a restricted fishing area," he informs her.

"But, Officer, I'm not fishing. Can't you see that?"

"But you have all this equipment and for all I know you could start fishing any moment, Ma'am. I'll have to take you in and write you up."

"If you do that I will charge you with rape," snaps the irate woman.

"I didn't even touch you," grouses the game warden.

"Yes, that's true... but you have all the equipment and for all I know you could start any moment."

The game warden quietly left the scene.

Moral: Never argue with a woman who knows how to read!

Yep that is a true story - sort of. It did happen somewhere else (Odessa, Texas) and the guy was charged with filing a false report. Meridian is about 80 miles from me and I can believe that it could happen.

Here is a little something that I got and thought it was funny, (TRUE STORY)

: how to call the police when you are old

How to Call the Police...When You are Old: George Phillips , an elderly man, from Meridian, Mississippi, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he'd left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who asked "Is someone in your house?" He said "No," but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me. Then the police dispatcher said "All patrols are busy. You should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available." George said, "Okay." He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he phoned the police again. "Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don't have to worry about them now because I just shot them." and he hung up. Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips' residence, and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George, "I thought you said that you'd shot them!" George said, "I thought you said there was nobody available!" (True Story) I LOVE IT! Don't mess with old people

Mainly I have a very nice new mid-size bus equipped with a wheelchair lift; it's much like driving an oversized mini van. Yesterday, however, I was put in an older bus... it was like April fool's day all over again but worse! Just glad it's behind me. It's been a taxing few weeks getting started and I am totally exhausted and ready for a relaxing weekend.

One totally random thought (that I am very committed to): women that are on a weight loss plan should just know not to weigh in during TOM!!! When will I finally learn and abide by that.... grrrrrr!

I have a lot of respect for bus drivers...we trust our children to them and they look like they might be a little tricky to drive!

I think the upright seat is probably more comfortable than a car. Maybe you should just make sure it has good support or get one of those back support inserts.

So... have I mentioned I started a new job??? The local school bus company is one of the few places in our area that is actually hiring. Always wondered if it would be something I'd like doing so why not? I just completed my training last week and now have a combination of routes both am and pm which give me a total of 24 hours /wk when there is a full week of school. My routes are for the special needs kids. I totally love the kids and my routes!

I am praying there isn't anything that will tax my back in this job. So far I am able to take brief breaks along the route for timing sake and I am up and down to buckle in kids so at least I'm not sitting/driving a solid 2-3 hours at a crack.

Well you'd have at least 3 of us communicating on the gardening thread by the looks of it. Right Ladycocoa?

I'm ok with traditional ground and container planting here; however, our soil is like clay as well and so to avoid having to work a large area I am going to implement square foot gardening techniques. It's not nearly time enough to put things in the ground here. Temps today are still in the mid 30's and much colder at night. I am probably going to cover my garden area with a plastic tarp in between rain so that it helps the ground warm without getting too soaked. Hopefully that will make turning the soil easier at an earlier date than usual.

Other pluses for sfgardening is that you get higher yield in smaller spaces, less weeding, easier to maintain nutrients in the soil without having to till, easier to rotate crops and stager propagation. I am certain you can do sfgardening in raised beds... there is a chapter on it in the book.

Hey ANGELGAL! I was just thinking about starting a gardening thread. I am all for container gardening and raised beds. If you look on my SparkPage and look in the pictures you will find two raised beds that I built 2 years ago. It's the only way to grow stuff here in the south...the weeds will beat you every time otherwise. Our soil is so poor and full of clay that half the year it resembles concrete!

You can order the kits to build your own raised beds and they can be expensive to start but they last a long time. My husband says it makes the tomatoes awfully expensive by the pound! But they taste like no tomatoes you can buy in the store.

I just planted spinach, radishes and garlic at my husband's place in Missouri. I planted lettuce spinach, chard and garlic last fall in Mississippi. The lettuce is coming on nicely and the garlic grew all winter despite the freezing weather we had. I need to replant some things. I started summer squash, zucchini and eggplants in those jiffy pots and they are doing well. I hope to plant them outside when I get back to Mississippi.

I love Spring!

Hey!
Thanks again for answering back. I have an MRI of my upper back and neck Thursday(tomorrow) They've never checked that before. My new Neurologist is really on top of it though. Really checking things out and I feel like they care. My last pain doc, when my regular physican put me on Celexa for depression and then Xanax for nerves my old pain doc demanded I quit them and said I didn't need them. She even drug tested me to make sure I quit them. Gosh my regular doc was pissed off.
Last June the 8th. My dad went in the hospital with a heart attack then 2 days later(Sunday) my mom went in with her heart(it was angina) they kept her overnight. That Monday morning they did my Dads heart catherization. Mom stayed for it as well as other family members. They said 1/3 of his heart is dead. We can't do anything. MY sister gets home from Michigan where she and her husband are visiting his family. He goes on to work and she stays with me. My brother takes mom on home. At 5:30 pm when we are getting ready to take Dad home my sisters husband calls her and says get to the emergency room I'm having a heart attack(he is 45) Their 13 year old daughter is still in Michigan and they have to call and get family to bring her home. I SPEED to get Dad home and me and mom head back to the hospital. They are doing a heart cath on my brother-in-law. They come out and say we have to do a triple by pass. An 8 hour operation. I spend 2 and 1/2 days at the hospital. I mean NO! sleep for 2 days. Literally This surgery was on Monday. At 12 Midnight they unhook life support and at 45 years old my sisters husband is gone. I can't begin to tell you how hard it was as I could not have loved him more than if he was my own flesh and blood. It was a stressful month that is why my doc put me on the meds in the first place and my old pain doc said that it was no reason to be so upset and no excuse to be on those meds. I have not liked her since and now finally after all this time I finally have a new doc. Thank God!
So sorry that was so LOOONNNG. I was never more glad to see the year 2008 leave here.
On a much happier note. I live in N.C and it was beautiful here today as well. 65 and tomorrow is supposed to be 70. My Daffadiols (spelled right?) have bloomed out. I have probably 60 now. I love them and the birds are twitter pated. Did you ever see Bambi and remember where Owl explained to Bambi that the birds were in love They were twitter pated. They are chaseing each other every where. As are the squirrels. I have quit a few Bluebirds and Purple finch. How I love the Spring and Summer.
When you find out more about those gardening plans let me know. I worked for a Lady for years and I had 150 tomato plants around 125 greenbean and pinto and around 50 corn plants and 15 cucumber and 15 squask 50 okra 100 potato plants and others. I had it memorized as I had the same thing ever year. The doctor said I could no longer do this and I loved it. However your idea sounds great and we can switch gardening ideas.
Thank you so much. You will never know how much it means to have someone who is having the same problems you are and they understand and they listen. Thank you! emoticon

Oh yesterday's weather was so nice and warm but today I've got the heat back on to take the chill out of the house. I'm excited for spring and for planting my garden. This year I am changing up my garden to make it more friendly for my back. So in preparation I've been reading about container gardening, square foot gardening and layer gardening. Anyone else a gardener in our group?

LadyCocoa - when talking w/neurologist be sure to let him know if you're also having ANY headaches or dizziness. Just a thought. Could indicate more than back issues.

I hope everyone is feeling limber today and will make the best of the day by moving.

LadyCocoa,
It's good to vent. You are in pain and really need the support of family and friends. I am so sorry that your mother in law is stressing you. To be truthful, she needs to butt out. Remind your husband he is married to you and needs to support you! My ex friend would always try to tell me it was not so bad and not be very supportive. Then he would see me in so much pain and barely walking that he realized he needed to help me out. I have 3 enlarged disks in my lower back and a nerve that pinches on the bone. This causes numbness, pain and not being able to grasp things. Yes, many times I have dropped or have not been able to hold things.
You need to be careful of any exercise you do. Even moving the wrong way can cause problems and pain.
My prayers are with you and if you need to talk or even vent, just email me.

Please forgive me folks but I am Just so stinking depressed. My back hurts so bad today all I want to do is cry and then my husband gets mad at me.
I go Thursday for an MRI on my neck and upper back (they have only checked my lower back- Bone on Bone in 1 disc and 2 are degenerative w/ one small tear)
I keep dropping things I told my Neurologist and my hands want to cramp and drawl in. He believes there is nerve damage somewhere. Well folks my husband said that he believes I do it on purpose. Why would i do that. It is embarrassing. When you go off you don't dare pick up anything glass.
And something else, My mother in law is PO'd at me for going to the doctor. She called my husband at work and asked him, How much is she costing you for doctor visits. And she needs to stop going. That the Epidural wasn't necessary and all I was doing was causing him stress. She then called me and said "come on, you know you need to learn to live with it and grow up". I know I should have told her off but I was so upset and mad I felt it was better to just hang up on her. No my husband did not take up for me. As a matter of fact he told me if insurance did not cover the back brace then I was crazy if I thought he was paying for it.
Sorry for the vent. I just feel really stressed today! It helps to have people who understand the pain to talk to so Thanks

I'd say it could be from just about any of the movements in that routine! Hope you figure out what is tolerable and what you should avoid doing so you don't totally take yourself out of commission. Make sure you talk with your doc about the new pain.

Hey! Something new I've never experienced before.
I took a power flex class. In this class you may use a stepper also a body bar with light weights and also dumbbells. Lunging from side to side and hammer curls etc...
Well on Monday our instructor decided to go outside the gym. It was nearly 80 degrees and beautiful. We were all glad. We did walking lunges in the back paring lot with dumbbell curls and overhead presses and so on. She decided to go to a wooden staircase that led to this restaurant. Around 12 steep steps. We walked up and down 2x then went down and came up 2 at a time 2x and then we went down and came up sideways skipping a step. Both sides twice. Sorry for the long explanation.
When I got home that day my back hurt sooooo bad. What was new was I had a sharp burning in my back and down my right leg. This pain is new to me. Now in another week I will be having an Epidural and they are fitting me for a back brace to wear 6 hours a day. Do you all think the stair thing brought on the pain in my leg and does it mean I'll have to leave it out on a permanent basis?
Thanks All

Looking back at last week's post... wish I felt so limber today. Urgh. I'm all out of whack from top to bottom.

Lady - my greatest appreciation to your soldier son and to you! Give that guy a huge military mom hug for me. I live vicariously giving hugs to other people's soldier's till my own can make it home. You know how it goes. We're only 5 mos into deployment and he gets no leave till deployment ends sometime in September. Urgh.

I look forward to hearing more from you when you get your own computer back. Don't strain those peepers of yours! LOL

I have some great back exercises. However my computer died and I am borrowing my sons lap top. My point is the mousey thing is on the computer and this is taking me FOREVER to type and move the mouse or lack of mouse thingamabob around. He is going to use a recovery disc for my computer so I hope things are spelled right and I will send the exercises when my PC is up and running because it is detailed.
y son just got back after a tour in Iraq for 1and1/2 years and is stationed in Texas/ He is home for a 30 day leave and he told me he didn't have till the end of his visit for me to type one message. OMG his print set up is son tiny I need a magnifying glass to see it. LOL!
I go to the Neurologist Wednesday. Wish me Luck

What a brutal week - sometimes I think mental effort is more exhausting than physical effort. I really love my job but there are times when I dream about driving a truck again! LOL

There is definitely something to be said for building muscle tone. I get pretty tired of all the low back cramping from sitting at work. I do stretch and move around constantly. With my new "phase two" plan, maybe this will start bringing things in a more positive direction.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Actually, I did a series of squats and that managed to relieve the muscle spasms in the sacroiliac, now my quads are aching but that's ok. The reverse crunches went ok too and did not increase the spasms.

LADYCOCOA - is your appointment soon? I hope someone on the team has had experience with this and can help answer this for you.

My thoughts on how I would react if it were me: If I had a bruise color spot in the same place I had pain but I did not hurt myself I would be a bit concerned. I would call the neuro docs office and then research what was going on.

One more question I forgot to ask.
Tonight my husband noticed a bruise in the shape of a half moon and about half the size of a golf ball. It's to the left of my spine at just above my tail bone. Now this is where alot of my pain is. I don't remember hitting it. Or anything else. Can they appear for no reason? Do you think it has anything to do with my back pain?. I hate to call the doctor for no reason. It is a dark purple and just showed up today.
Any ideas?

O.K I had to write and say that I am excited and nervous at the same time. Here is the reason.
I finally got someone to pay attention to me and my regular doctor has gotten me an appointment with a Neuro surgeon. Now I have never been to one. I have been to a Neurologist that has been seeing me for pain management. When I told them I cold not afford a nearly 4,000.00 dollar nerve study they did do a MRI w/contrast but they were truly mad and said all we can do is treat the pain. I have Neurofibromyntitis(I know I did not spell that right) Anyway it is a cluster of cysts at the base of my spine and they think a whole lot of my pain in sitting is coming from that. Well I found out they have been watching it for 2 years and never even told me about it. My regular doctor literally said they were pissed about that. They said what in the world are they waiting on. Also That I have had Fibromylgia for over a year and never told me or reported it to my regular doctor. My doctors office said they are going to get in touch with them ASAP. Me thinks the you know what is going to hit the fan. My only concern is that the pain management place won't refill my pain meds before my appointment at the neuor surgeon. I'll bet they will be livid with me.
Sorry this is long but I am explaining the situation. Anyway. what usually happens when you go to a neurosurgeon (I already have my MRI films from November) So if someone could tell me what to expect that would be great. On the papersit said it is their policy to get you back to as normal a life as possible or treat the pain the best way they can and give you back quality of life. I sure hope so. But I don't want to go in there blind either, you know what I mean?
Thanks for listening

Frustrated and struggling to overcome a bad back day today. Of all days! I've got to get my house in order and head to my mom's for the week. She's having eye surgery and I'll be helping her through her recovery at home. No time for this creeky, achy back! Urgh.

I just iced for a good long while and now I'm going to get moving... throw in some laundry and try the Gazelle, gently, to see if I can limber up.

Everyone have a good week! I won't have computer access till I get home.

Be VERY CAREFUL doing those reverse crunches... especially if you're already having spasms. Do you have a Swiss Ball? You might want to try some of the exercises using it to help support your back.

(thanks for the info on the seats)

I did some crunches (using proper technique for my back of course) and now my sacroiliac is cramped up. LOL I honestly do not know if that is sad or funny but I am choosing to chuckle for now. The rest of me is going...huh?

I'll do reverse crunches and see if that helps but that is just too much...seriously. Other than that, I feel pretty good!

Today I've started out with lots of walking and exercise (well lots for me). I always have such a sense of gratitude and some surprise when I'm able to be so mobile. Right now though, I'm off to ice my back before taking on the rest of my day.

A fun and busy afternoon ahead celebrating my dearest friend's bday. Her family is all gone away so I'm it for celebrants. But I feel so lucky to have the day to share.

Hope everyone has a lovely day today as well!

We purchased ours for about $35 each at a local sporting goods store (Burghardts). They are very sturdy and have special "hook" to secure them on bleachers. I found they do offer some good back support but its best to remember you MUST not sit for long periods without getting up to stretch and walk around. Trust me you'll be better off with them than without but nothing makes up for getting up and moving about.

SF - you mentioned folding stadium seats, do they really help? I've been skeptical, not wanting to spend the money for fear of wasting it - but I'm missing out on some racing events I could go to if I could just handle being there...

Anyone else can chime in with feedback on stadium seats too!

Wanted to share an inspirational visual with you all this morning...

I went mall walking for the first time ever today. To see all different people of varying ages there for the same purpose was so cool. But by far the most heart warming and inspirational were those "mature" folks who came as couples and either walked arm in arm to support each other or one was pushing another in a wheelchair.

Now if that doesn't warm the cockles of your heart and make you feel like you can do it too I don't know what does!

Hope everyone finds a way to get moving today!
Teresa

Hanging in there. It continues to seem I go a few days without too much pain to exercise or walk and then along comes a day (or sometimes more) when the pain keeps me down. Today was a down day. Had to force myself up out of bed and do some light chores just the same. Won't keep me from going to bunco tonight though!

I'm having lower back pain again, due to the weather and shampooing my carpet with one of those terrible rental shampooers. Next time I'm paying someone to shampoo it!

My back is feeling better and I have started to walkout side again.Boy I didn't realize how much I missed them.I'm not walking as far only a mile, but it's more than enough when I'm done . I've learned a way to relieve low back pain with good posture, sure seemed to help yesterday anyway.I hope it wasn't a fluke!!

I'm thinking I may become a mall walker. Hmmm... The sun is out but temps are still too low to spend much time outside for walks and such.

Yippee! Though I did my actual weekly w/i on Wednesday... for some reason I stepped onto the scale today just to see if there would be any difference (now that TOM is over with) and voila... down another 2.6 lbs!! Well I want to be excited and I keep promising myself that its real and not a fluke.
