Over the Thanksgiving holiday Im Delegating items that I have been holding up e.g. putting them into a big box to eventually belong to someone else. It takes less than 5 minutes and is inspiring me to put a bit more in every so often. D day= Delivery day is this coming Monday

5 minutes x one week to lighten the load of my life and move on clearer/less cluttered

I liked this. I do several of these things already such as having a photo of my kids on my computer screen. I also love my Gary Patterson Cat Calendar. Makes me smile every day. I often smile just because it makes people wonder what's up with you. LOL

I like the idea of adding gratitude for things that didn't happen.

This topic is about how we can take a five minute "time out" to refresh our souls. I am posting this link here because I definitely think finding ways to make ourselves happier can refresh our souls. This article lists "10 Ways to Make Yourself Happier in 30 Seconds or Less," but I feel sure that many of these techniques can be stretched to 5 minutes, if we really want to spend that long. Or, we can do all ten in one sitting, and there's our 5 minutes! LOL!

Spend time at your bliss station.

The first link is author Austin Kleon's explanation of what he thinks a bliss station is, building on Joseph Campell's message about following your bliss. I could (maybe should) stop at this, but I've included a second link, if you're interested, which is a deeper article about Joseph Campbell and some of his quotes. Food for thought...

I had a wonderful 10-day vacation to Honolulu, Hawai'i. Snorkled for the first time in my life, although I just went into the water for about 10 minutes at a time with my long pants & long swim shirt on because I have allergies to every sunscreen I have tried and I am photo-sensitive. But at other times I was completely covered and wore a hat and carried a UV umbrella!

My friend and I went with his cousin (and cousin's wife, daughter, and son-in-law) who had been stationed there in the early 1960s. He's a retired colonel, so we were able to stay at the Hale Koa Hotel at the Ft. DeRussy Armed Forces Recreation Center on Waikiki Beach. (This Pacific military recreation center is self-funded and does not get any government $$. The general public just can't stay there unless sponsored by active or retired military.) Very nice view from our room of the beach and the garden area.

Our retired military friend was celebrating his 85th birthday. His leukemia is in remission, so it was so good that he was able to go back to Hawaii with his family for one last time. Having lived there for 3 years and having visited at least 10 other times since then, they were very familiar with the area and took us to many of their favorite beaches, restaurants, bakeries, and other areas.

Why I decided that it was a good idea for a non-athletic, 71-year-old grandmother to get on a boogie board is beyond me, but I figured if I didn't try it then, I never would. Well, I never should have. I had fun on it for awhile, but a big wave overtook me and tumbled and twisted me under about 3-feet of water. The boogie board did not hit my ribs, so I am not bruised on my chest and the x-rays don't show any cracked or broken ribs, but the doctor said I have costochondral separation -- ligaments separated from my ribs. Right now I'm 9-days through my estimated 3-4 week recovery period. I'm still on heavy pain meds, which is why I haven't been writing much on SparkPeople - just checked in for the past 4 days, so I've started another streak, anyway!

I'm okay, just sore and not moving very fast.

I think my natural color is still dishwater gray. I still color it in one of several tones of blond. If it ever turns white I think I will quit coloring it. LOL I wear it shoulder length after always having long hair. It is so much easier to just wash and go.

In 5 minutes I can give 3 reasons to be thankful.
1. I still have hair
2. I have an anniversary Friday and I get Mexican Food.
3. I have a few really good friends.

I suppose some people might see me that way, although not little. I get people suggesting I get into lifting weights so I can lose weight. I should, but I find that boring. Right now I have long, dark brown hair and am thinking I should go to a shorter style, maybe with some gray frosting. Wouldn't be too hard since nothing grew back after chemo. Just depends on what Hana has what I look like.

No, I don't have it happen near as often anymore. I'm not out and about near as much as I used to be before I was retired, so maybe that figures in. And I've wondered if my age has something to do with it, too...

Interesting that you don't have this happen as often as before. I think people are more closed off than they used to be. I feel like it is important to be a listener whenever I can.

That's so true. It doesn't happen to me as much now, but several years ago it seemed like I must have had a sign on my back saying "Confide in me." I'd be by myself in a fast-food restaurant or in line somewhere and the person next to me would open up and start talking to me like I had known them all my life. Some would tell me their problems -- not that they wanted any advice, they just wanted someone to listen. It was uncanny how often it happened.

Now I'm thinking maybe I don't seem that approachable anymore. Or the world is changing and not as many people are as trusting now. But I do know this: There are still many people out there who just need someone to be kind, treat them respectfully, and just listen, if only for a moment, to what they have to say. And I've been on both ends of that scenario at different times in my life.

Great advise.

I was thinking of something that might actually take more than 5 minutes and isn't really a calming action, but can be interesting. While I was getting my new phone set up there was a man at the other end of the table transferring information from his old phone. Then a lady came in and everyone got to talking. Just taking a few minutes you can meet people and find out something about them and you might find out something interesting.

Here's some advice worth sharing -- and good for those five minutes:

Very good use of time!

I realized that I've been going and going all day, and I didn't really take a break until 7:00 p.m. when I sat down to a favorite TV show (more than 5 minutes). And I opened my mail while I watched. I know I need to quit trying to do more than one thing at a time.

Has anyone thought about scheduling this 5-minute break at a certain time in your day? Or do you think it's better that the 5 minutes be a spontaneous break whenever you need it most?

Wine rack is what I was thinking of. Took me until this afternoon to remember that word. I didn't see what I needed in wine racks, but looked at "tea storage" I think it was. There actually are things like that and some will hold the boxes or the round containers of loose tea. I think that is what I am wanting. I probably still need to throw out some that I don't drink a lot of. I am always trying something new, though, and now that it is getting colder I am drinking more of it.

I don't want the teas flavors to get mixed so I use a small box for the different kinds. One flavor each. My favorite is peppermint green tea. Yummy

Like a wine rack?

Some of the teas I buy are in boxes and others in those tall round canisters or square tin canisters. I have some sitting on a shelf, and some of the tea bags I just put in a basket to corral them.

(Then I had to find a place for the basket!) emoticon

Thanks for the tea. I decided to enjoy some tonight, but I think that package has gotten old. It is lemon zinger and I can't taste it. Oh, well, I got some new today that I have had a couple times at church. It is raspberry hibiscus.

I need to find something to arrange my tea so it doesn't keep falling all over the place. Do you know of anything that would work? I am thinking similar to a wine thing (now I can't remember what they are called. That drives me nuts)

I do like tea but never take the time to savor it. 5 minutes would help me enjoy it more.

My goodness! That a good thing that you did tear out that wall!

Here's a peaceful image for a 5-minute power break. FANCYQTR and I share a love of tea, so I thought of her and sweet Cassie when I saw this.

We are so glad we did. We found 220 electrical junctions in the wall that easily could have started a fire.

My paint job will be only a small square in back of the stove. The rest of the room has wall paper on it. I don't want to try to get the wall paper off. That would be more work than I could handle.

Darlene -- Go to the Found it Online thread. I've posted a photo of the Pioneer Woman's shelf that's over her stove. Just a different way of hanging a shelf that I thought was clever.

Those pours remind me of the wild weather they have been having with the hurricanes. Might not really have that much green, but when they show maps they always have things like that. They came out really nice.

Today I was just reading a book for relaxing time. Other than that I was working on organizing stuff on the stove and cleaning it. There isn't enough room with all the stuff I have for Cassie's cancer fight. I've decided I want to paint above the stove and then put a shelf up over it to put some of the things on -- either her supplements or the things like salt and pepper. If I can figure something to hang a couple pans or pots on I'll do that, too.

I love Acrylic Pours because I can sit with no plan and just pour some paint on a canvas. If I like it I keep it if I don't I can wipe it clean. The result is not the point - the process is the point.

Interesting, and you never know but you might come up with something worthwhile.

I enjoy sitting with a mug of tea quite often. Kind of like someone who drinks coffee will just sit with a cup of coffee. It is starting to get cooler in the evenings here and just sitting on the porch with a cup of tea is nice.

This one is different, but thought I'd post it here. It may be appropriate sometime and just what we need for those precious five minutes, depending on a mood.

“Sometimes we are so confused and sad that all we can do is glue one thing to another. Use white glue and paper from the trash, glue paper onto paper, glue scraps and bits of fabric, have a tragic movie playing in the background, have a comforting drink nearby, let the thing you are doing be nothing, you are making nothing at all, you are just keeping your hands in motion, putting one thing down and then the next thing down and sometimes crying in between.”
~ Lynda Barry

I know we've mentioned breathing before, but I just saw this entry on a SparkPeople article I was reading today called "7 Ways to Add Self-Care to Your Workday." This part explains the four-square breathing method.

Breathe.
Breathing is probably the easiest way to promote relaxation and mindfulness during the workday—and you can do it anywhere. Karly Powell, a naturopathic doctor at the Strata Integrated Wellness Spa at Garden of the Gods, recommends an easy five-minute practice called four-square breathing: Inhale through your nose for four seconds, depressing the diaphragm so the belly expands with air. Hold for four seconds. Exhale through your mouth for four seconds, letting go of tension and stress you may be holding in your shoulder, chest or other areas of the body. Hold again for four seconds, and then repeat the cycle. "This can help shift your nervous system out of a ‘fight or flight’ response and into a calmer state, improving your focus and making you more efficient and productive throughout the day," Powell says.

This is from Dr. Wayne W. Dyer's Facebook page. What a great idea! Had to share it today since this one is dated.

Actually, I guess this is like the SparkPeople Vision Board project. I guess it was the nature scenes that resonated with me on this one.

Good idea. I also like to sit back and listen to relaxing music.

Then I blow it all by listening to the baseball game or watching football. Why can't my teams win anything. Guess I will have to root against the Rockies today since the Cardinals are playing for their division win. Of course, before the Rockies came along the Cardinals were my #1 team.

I'm sure that meant a lot to your friend to have the hairdresser say that. I know how self-conscious and uncomfortable I feel when I get a wonky haircut!

Good post!

I was at a meeting Monday night and a friend had a radical new haircut. Short and kind of sassy. She was obviously uncomfortable with her new look. My friend, who was a hair dresser for 40 years, said "I love your new look!" Well, needless to say that was a just what my friend needed to hear. Just a minute or two and the smile was the payoff.

One of the things that helps to get me in a better mood (and quit focusing on my own issues!) is to go to the new posts on the Community Goal Feed and support other Sparkers. I timed myself on this today, and I commented on 13 posts and "liked" most all the rest. It took only 6 minutes of my time to get through all 20 messages, and I hope I've helped to make someone else's day a little better.

Here is a list of 21 Things You Could Do in Just 5 Minutes…

Answer 5 emails.
Return a phone call.
Read a few pages of a book. (On your phone or iPad.)
Tell someone how much you appreciate them.
Listen to someone tell you a story. (And just be there.)
Write in your journal. It doesn’t have to be long. A few notes here and there add up quickly.
Pay someone a compliment.
Do a favor for someone. (Even a stranger…)
Review your calendar.
Affirm your goals. (They are written down, right?)
Listen to a motivation song.
Check your todo list. (If you don’t look at it, it can’t have your back.)
Clean your workspace.
Go for a walk, around the office.
Text someone just to say you love or miss them.
Do a quick task. (Or even a couple.)
Delegate an item that you have been holding up.
Slow down and catch your breath.
Add a new phone number to your address book.
Do some preventative maintenance. (Before there is an issue!)
Enjoy where you are… you will never be in that exact moment again.
