@GUINEAPIGMOM - Awesome!!!!!

I run everyday and today I cramped all up. I was supposed to do day 3, but ended up just running for 10 minutes and then limping home. I'll try it again tomorrow :)

Much to my surprise...I did it! I did W5D3! The 20 minute run! I definitely surprised myself. And guess what: it wasn't terrible. I was kind of freaked out reading about how people had to repeat weeks and such but thought I'd give it a shot. Listened to music and told myself I couldn't look at time til at least 4 songs in. The time went by faster than I thought it would and really wasn't bad at all. I have NEVER run for 20 minutes straight and I am so excited that I did it! Onward and upward kids - this chubby girl is gonna run a 5K! emoticon emoticon

Back to SP to lose 30+ pounds so I can try for a baby! Ready to get fit and healthy and stay that way this time.

I am starting week 5 today.....! And I'm nervous. Not about the 5 mins, but about the quick jump to 20 by the end of the week. But I will just need to suck it up and do it I guess.
Anyone else starting week 5 and nervous?

I just got in from day 3 run and I an very tired and oh so happy - it is a beautiful day out and I am so glad I went out instead of going to the Y to use the treadmill to make it easier. You can do it, trust your body - it is strong and well trained!

W5D2 done yesterday and I pushed the last run 'just to see'. I made it to 12 minutes and realized that I could go longer - so although I know tomorrow will be tough, I trust that I can do it and know I wll feel great after!

W5D2 done yesterday. Running is starting to become enjoyable. At work yesterday afternoon I was thinking "man I can't wait to go home and run tonight." I actually WANTED to run. Before now it's just been because it's challenge but I really wanted to run and feel good from running. When we ran it was cool and windy and we ran the last 8 min run uphill against the wind and that was poor planning on my part. We are going to do the 20 minute run tomorrow or Monday and I am nervous! We have to find someplace flat to run so it isn't terrible. Music really helps! : )

I did week 5 day 1 yesterday -- almost. I was 30 seconds from the end when my treadmill just decided to stop and tell me that my workout was over. I couldn't get it to start up again, so I moved over to the next one and ran another minute before doing a cooldown to make up for the time spent standing and jabbing at buttons on the faulty treadmill. But I count that as finishing, because I definitely could have done that last 30 seconds.

Update to week 5 -
Did day 2 yesterday, even though they say not to do 2 days in a row. I didn't start feeling "taxed" until about 5 minutes into the 2nd 8 minute jog. I powered through the last 3 minutes without too much problem. Took the time to stretch really good and hoped for the best this morning. Today I'm feeling a pretty good. calves are a little tight, but not much more that normal. Real rest day to day, then day 3 tomorrow!

It only costs a nickel more to go first class.

Did W5D1 yesterday. I missed my regularly scheduled D1 on monday and had to travel, so it got pushed back to Tuesday. I'm debating whether to do D2 today or, push it back to Thursday and Move D3 to Saturday. I think I'm going to give it a go today. If after a few minutes, I'm not feeling it, I'll push everything back.

It only costs a nickel more to go first class.

Did day 3 on Saturday. Ran (ok, jogged) outside at my local high school track. I've been doing last 4 weeks indoor on treadmill, so it was the first time I ran outside. I was so psyched. I actually made it 2 times around the track (1/4 mile track) without stopping; which took me 10 minutes. Yeah, me! A month ago that wouldn't have happened for sure. However, then I got a massive cramp in my right calf and had to walk for 4 minutes before it finally unknotted itself and let me continue. I tried to start jogging again, but had to walk/run the last 6 mintues. So I'm kind of bumming. I had the will to run, however, body had something different in mind. Although I did jog an extra 1/2 lap at the end of the cool down. So I guess I'm going to be staying at week 5 this week. Need to get past that 20 minute run before moving on. I hope the body will cooperate this week.

Hooray!!!! I changed my running place and it completely worked! I was able to do day 2 without a problem, I probably could have done day 3 as well.
The park where I was running before had long drawn out inclines and I just couldn't do the 8 minutes. I felt defeated on Wednesday. So, today after encouragement from a co-worker I tried another path that is flat and it was sooooo much better!
I am encouraged and motivated again!

I cannot believe that I have been putting it off. The first 5 min were OK, the second I kicked up the speed halfway through, and the third was hard but I was not gasping for air.

When I was done, I still had energy and needed to get my calorie burn in so I did 1 min intervals at a higher speed to keep my HR up.

I am actually psyched about Day 2. But it will have to wait until Monday. Sunday hubby, DD, and I are doing the MS Walk in Seattle.

Thanks to everyone who has paved the trail for us. Without reading other's positive experiences I would not have the courage to embark on running a 5k.

OMG- I DID IT! I shocked myself this morning. I actually ran the whole 1st 8 minutes of week 5, day 2. Had to take two 10 second breaks during the 2nd 8 minutes to wipe the sweat off my face, but I made it through. Other posters were right.. it is so much a mind game with yourself telling yourself you CAN do it. I'll have to play the game again on Sunday when I try day 3, the 20 minute run. Will definitely have to get psyched for that one.

LRIVARD- looks like we both have a June 5 goal of running that 5K. I'm actually starting to think I may be able to do it. I wasn't so sure 5 weeks ago.

Week 5, day 1 today. I can't believe I did it. I actually ran 5 mins & walked 3 for 20 minutes. To think 5 weeks ago I couldn't even run 1 1/2 minutes because I thought that was hard. Day 2 will be Friday. I'm not sure I can run 8 minutes straight. I did have to stop for 10 seconds a couple of times to wipe my brow off since I was sweating so much. Guess I need to by a sweatband. From what I read though, lots of people say its a mind game. We will have to see.

Made it through day 3 today! I wasn't planning on doing it until tomorrow but wasn't sure if it would fit in my schedule so I went to the gym today and started with some ST and then warmed up on the elliptical since all the treadmills were busy and then i figured I would try and see how far I could go. Halfway through I wasn't sure I would make it so slowed it down a bit and at about 1 mile my rt shin really started burning but I kept going. I thought I would die by the time I got to the end and then walked a few minutes to cool down but am hoping with a few days of rest I will be ready for week 6 next week. I may try and do a little running on Saturday morning too but will see how the schedule works out.

I DID IT! 20 minutes of running. It was totally a mind game, and not allowing myself to watch the clock. I focused on the morning news and when those commercials came on, boy where they amazing and the most interesting commercials ever. emoticon Anything to keep me from watching that time. I phoned my husband at work and told him i had done it, there was a pause on the phone and then "congratulations, you mean you ran 20 minutes with out stopping?". YES! He said he paused because he didn't realize that I was to that stage. Neither did I. Now that I've crossed that hurdle D3 of W6 doesn't seem so daunting. Here I come week 6! emoticon

Also-- does anyone have a problem with shorts riding up? I have large thighs and can't find any shorts that really suit running well. I bought a pair of running shorts that specifically said wide leg....in a size larger than normal....still ride up and are tight across the thighs.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated!!!

I am a little defeated today.... I did day 2 and the 8 minutes kicked my butt. I was able to do the first one, but on the second 8 minutes, when the dude announced that I still had 4 minutes left (I thought I had 2 or 3) my body put on the breaks and I stopped in the middle of the run for the first time.
I actually almost cried. emoticon
I walked the rest of the way and called it a day.
I am almost wondering if just continuing to run for the whole 20 minutes might not be better?
I dunno, but I will see what happens on friday.

I re-read a lot of peoples posts, trying to pshyc myself up for tomorrow's 20 minute run. Most people seemed to say it is just in your head, a mind over matter. I'm going to have a good pep talk with myself tonight, because my mind has lost 2 times now,and attempt the run again tomorrow morning. Hopefully, I will be posting a very excited message tomorrow. Thanks for your posts.

Did day 2 today on the treadmill, I did the first 8 mins. at 4.4 and felt like I could maybe go longer so the second 8 mins. I did at 4.5 and was worried I wouldn't make it but I did. I have to go at a slower pace to do the long runs so not sure how day 3 will go. On Monday I ran outside with the trainer and did 1.5 miles in circuits at a 13 min./mile pace but today did the 2 miles in 30 mins. I am not going to worry about how fast I am going, slow and steady wins the race is my motto! At 5 feet tall my legs are shorter so I figure I'll just do the best I can.

I don't know where I am anymore with the days. I have been able to do 2x10 minute runs, but I have been unable to do them together yet. So I'm still struggling with that 20 min run. As much as I know I can do W6 D1 &D2, I know I won't be able to do D3. so until I can accomplish that final 20 min. I guess W5 graduation is going to have to wait. Running 10 minutes is definitely getting easier and no long seems like an eternity, so hopefully i can increase that time. I have picked a date of June 5th to run my first 5K run so I have some time.

I'm so glad I found this group.

I've been dreading w5d3 ever since I saw it while looking ahead a few weeks ago. I'll be doing it tomorrow. But reading everyone's posts here makes me think I'm going to be able to get through it.

I'm feeling motivated now. :)

Week 5 Day 3 DONE!!!

Woo-hoo! I'd psyched myself out about it a bit, but decided to just push through and I did it. Granted, it hurt from 12 minutes into the run to 18 minutes. But the last 2 minutes I felt awesome again. :)

Mind over matter. You can do it!!!!

Well I didn't do W5D3 on Friday as scheduled...instead I did D2 again...stayed with the 8 min intervals...but today...I DID IT!! I went out thinking I was gonna to the 8 minutes....oh MAYBE I'd do 10 and then rest a minute and do another 10, but I just kept on going...and the little reminders for the day 1 and day 2 let me realize how much I've done and how little I had left to do...It felt GREAT!! Now that I usually do Day 1 on Monday, I'm not sure how I"ll proceed...maybe do this 3 times?? Or start Week 6 on Wed??

I did it! I did it! I ran 2 miles in 23:40!

I had a sharpie in my hand to count laps, and decided I was running in lane 1 so I wouldn't second guess my pace. Each lap I put a dot on the back of my hand, and just checked my watch to see if I was still holding onto my 3 minute lap pace.

Yes, I have issues with Sparkpeople throwing down the gauntlet of "it's not running until it's at a 12 minute mile pace". My 15 minute pace looked like jogging to me and my heart rate monitor! But still....

Anyhow, when my iPod touch program chimed my 20 minutes was up, I knew I could still do another lap or so and get that 2 mile thing. (I had read the first two miles you RUN is the hardest, and adding mileage isn't as vicious after that).

So to whomever reads this when doing week 5 themselves, what worked for me was reminding myself of Jillian Michael's saying "it's all mental, this is all a mental game". Sure my shins had felt heavy before, but it never broke me or hurt afterwards. And it went away after the first mile. Side stitch? breath out harder.

it's all mental

talk yourself into it.

It sure seems like Week 5 was trying to kick my butt. For day 1, it was cold and the wind was a killer. Today was W5D3, and I have been worrying all week about the 20 minute run. Just as I was getting ready to head out for my run this morning, I realized that my iPod was BROKEN! What the heck?! What are the odds that my iPod breaks on the most important run of my life? I've never exercised without music before, so I was seriously considering skipping this run. Luckily, I chose not to skip...and guess what? I made it! Woohoo! If I can do it, the rest of you can too! Like everyone else says, it really is mind over matter. You just have to keep pushing yourself, because yes, you can do it.

Well, I did Day 2 of Week 5 today--wasn't sure I'd be able to, but I did---AND---the weird part--I was running faster. My stride seemed better, felt like there was more space between picking my feet up and putting them down--I don't know. It felt stronger, and I liked it. I can't WAIT to be able to run stronger and faster ALL the time. :):)

I did W5D2 yesterday and it was maybe one of the hardest thing I've ever done...really doubtful that I'll be doing 20 minutes tomorrow....I like that the podcast combines them all so if I dont think I can get past the 8, I'll just do day 2 again....yikes this is getting TOUGH!

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.

I was really nervous about day 1 and couldn't do it yesterday as I planned so did it today on the treadmill. I did my 5 minute runs between 4.2 and 4.4 and was able to get them in. May try to go outside tomorrow with the trainer but I have a harder time pacing myself and breathing when I am outside. Not suer how the 8 min. run will go and can't even fathom 20 mins but will try and take one day at a time and see what happens.

I did W5D2 at a pace under a 12 minute mile, which is a big improvement for me. Yet, that last minute or less of the 2nd 8 min run (I thought I had 90 seconds to go) I didn't quit, but I took it to a slow slog.

Over a month ago my husband and I ran a mile in 15 minutes (slow jog). I am really wishing Friday was 10 run/ 3 walk/ 10 run. I am worried about the 20 minute straight.. or I will have to kill my pace.

hmm I just remembered my program has a PAUSE button. I get "stuck" I could always pause it and walk for a min, then go back to running. Either that or I will have to decide this is my "long slow run" and I will work on speed work Monday, and take a "day off" from the program. Or something.

gah.

I wonder how many people get stuck on this part.

I finished the w5d2 yesterday. ROCKNROBIN, I am also a little nervous about the 20 minute run. I signed up for my first 5K (May 19). I hope knowing I need to be ready will motivate me.
