I did my first week 4 workout today and survived! I really do think that having running shoes that are meant for me made a big difference. I never walked during the 5 minute runs once and I am proud of myself for getting through that. I didn't think I would make it to this point where I still had a big desire to do this, but to go for 5 minutes straight without walking! I am soo pumped about that.

I guess my only concern is that I don't feel like I am running very fast at all. I am probably under a 5 MPH if I were to go on a treadmill. (I am only running outside.) SHould I be concerned at this point?

Also, in the past few weeks I have gained about 2 pounds. I think its muscle b/c of my running and that I have also picked up my activity level but I don't know. Any experiences with weight gain/loss during the Couch to 5K?

Finished week 4 today (might have done it four 4 days?!). Anyway, it went very well. The first two runs flew by without my stopping at all emoticon the second 3 min was okay but harder. That last 5 min run is a killer, I stopped twice for only about 5-10 secs and then continued. I must have been running a little faster than my usual turtle pace because I had to go around the neighbord 4 times. emoticon . I will map the run later to see what my distance was. I will start week 5 day 1 tomorrow and see how it goes. emoticon

I am on week 4 - just finished week 4 day 3 yesterday actually. I plan to repeat week 4 with my running buddies because it was very challenging for all of us and we want a little more preparation before the 20-minute run next week.

The jump from week 3 to week 4 was very difficult, and I feel so proud for making it!! It was especially difficult because I did Week 4 day 1 during the heat wave when it was in the high 90's and humid. I was sore for 4 days - but I made it! That's a nice feeling. It makes me want to run in the heat more often ... it seems to intensify any pride and confidence that I feel afterwards.

I just ran Week 5 Day 1 and it was not as hard as I expected! Three 5-minute runs and it went great. The first one was the roughest, then I was fine. Push through week 4 and you will do great in week 5!

i am starting week 4 tomorrow at high altitude so I am a little nervous. I did my last 2 week 3 workouts in Denver and it wasn't too bad, but week 4 looks a little daunting b/c of the 5 minute runs.

I think this is about where I started to lose interest in the program last year when DH and I started it. He was literally dragging me out the door to go. I am more motivated now and I am doing all of it on my own thanks to the Ullrey podcasts, but I definitely am a little nervous to start a new week when I am still trying to adjust from Texas altitude to Denver altitude. I will be heading back to Texas on Tuesday, so hopefully the rest of the week won't be so hard on me.

I did go to a runner's store yesterday and was fitted for a new pair of shoes which I have never done before. I usually by them off the rack at a normal shoe store. He analyzed my walking and also my running on a treadmill with video and everything! I am hoping that these shoes will also help make a difference.

Wish me luck!

Have no fear guys! If you did week 4, you can do week 5. I just finished W5D2 today and could have run further. I started out without any running, so if I can do it you can too! emoticon

Today is my c2k rest day but I will do some strength training. The humidity here is supposed to go down tomorrow (maybe down to 80%!) so hopefully tomorrow's run will be a little cooler than yesterday.

I did finally lose 2 pounds and that makes me very happy. I am only 4ft 10.5 inches so even that 2lbs shows and my clothes fit better emoticon emoticon

I'm right there with you guys. In fact, I don't even take my dog yet. He's a whippet and would love to go, but I don't want to mess with my times--because I swear he stops to poop way too much! He'll join me when I'm not as concerned with stopping.

Oh Sandy!
Ugh! I am sorry that happened. I am the same as you though...I have people who tell me they want to run with me, but I honestly prefer to do it completely alone! I am slow and I like being slow and alone and having it be just me and my podcast, you know? In the future I might "let" people join me, but for now it is my escape from stress...I don't want the added stress.
Good attitude though! Keep up the great work!!!

I just finished day #2, week #4.

It didn't go as well as last time - some logistics issues.

The run itself was fine, but I scheduled to meet the girl I met last time -- the one I've been encouraging to start this same program, so I ran over to the university, but this time, I didn't see her.

She was my ride home. So, I stayed at our scheduled place for an hour -- running the stairs, pacing, stretching. When the lights started to come on and it was starting to get dark at 8:40 I realized I needed to start heading home.

It took me 35 minutes to run to the university and an hour to walk back . . . and an hour running the stairs. And, now my feet aaaaacccccchhhhe.

When I got home I called her and she said she had been there until 7:20, but had to meet friends at 7:30, so she left. I probably arrived around 7:30 and forgot she was going to leave at 7:30 otherwise I wouldn't have stayed pacing for an hour.

I have an early morning flight. On the downside, trying hard not to feel a little bitter. I need to keep my runs my own thing. Added stress when there is a mix-up like that. Also, I didn't have my cell phone or her contact information. So, I need to start running with my cell phone.

The upside is I got about 3 hours of extra exercise In tonight that I wasn't scheduled to get. And, I have no appetite now because of the heat.

Sandy

Currently I'm not working but I started out in Pediatric Intesive Care; I have done Electrophysiology Lab nursing, I ran a Pediatric Endoscopy clinic, ran a cholesterol clinic, NICU, Peds Cardiac ICU, newborn nursery and my last position was as a transplant coordinator for kidney, pancreas and liver. So, as a nurse you have tons of specialties to choose from and no one bats an eye if you change units frequently. Good luck.

Good luck with nursing school. It is a great profession and the pay is getting better. You will never be without a job (unless you take time off like I did). Are you starting with a community college 2 yr program? That is how I started. emoticon

O.k. I did week 4 day 2 today and only stopped twice. Once to tie my shoe and then for about 15 secs during the second 5 min run. Today it was only 72 degrees but the humidity was at 93% at 6:30AM emoticon . I think I will do 4 days of week 4 to build up my stamina. I'm a little worried about week 5 emoticon

Started week 4 today. Had to walk a few times during the 5 min run but it was very hot and humid even at 6:30AM. For anyone that wants to figure out what distance they are running you can go to mapmyrun dot com and map your run and it will give you the distance.

I also like the idea of working on speed for 9 weeks after working on endurance for 9 weeks.

Thank goodness the weather co-operated with me this morning. It was still cool (probably around 43 F) and breezy, but at least it wasn't raining. After only running once since last Friday, I was definitely glad when the run was done, but it was only the last 5 min run that really challenged me. The others were fine.

Oh, and if anyone remembers my knee question from earlier, I think those extra days of rest really must have helped. There was no pain at all today. My knee was a little stiff, but overall fine. Dh, who was an athlete in another life, said it was probably my joints getting used to the high impact running. It was either that, or I wrenched my knee a little on DDR last week.

Keep running everyone!

Bean - I usually focus on getting the endurance and muscle memory without worrying about speed -- and once I reach the 30 minutes at the end of the 9 weeks -- that's when I start to keep track of speed for the next 9 weeks.

Right now it's getting your ligaments and muscles to adjust so you won't have injuries when you hit your stride at the end of the 9 weeks.

I just did week #4, day #1 today. I've convinced a friend to start the program, so she was doing laps around the university and called to see if I wanted to meet her there and she would drive me home after.

Guess what? A perfect 30 minute run. I had many hills on the way -- several times he would say 'now you are starting your recovery' and I would be at the bottom of a hill that I had to walk up.

The upside is I LOVE hills. I LOVE how I feel. Very empowering for me.

The other upside is I burned 600 calories and my average heart rate was the same as my high last run (on flat surface).

We agreed to do the exact same thing again on Friday. Can't wait. It really helped me going from point A to point B. I felt like I had traveled a distance (a distance I usually drive). I love that feeling of accomplishment. I had a friend with a car waiting for me to drive me home and I walked 30 minutes with her for the cool down.

I need to see whether or not there is a track nearby so I can do distance, but I am not concerned about it at this point. I am too busy being thrilled with myself that I am actually running and loving it!
Sometimes it is really hard, but then other times I am so surprised when my podcast man tells me "You did it!". Glad to hear I am similarly paced with others. I will work on speed later.

I think speed will come with time. I run outside too - but I'm running at this middle school track that the public can use - It is nice because then I can do the distance part of C25K instead of the time.

I personally am more concerned about stamina at this point. I'm hoping the speed will come. You sound like you're running at close to the same pace I am. My last run was 2.1 miles in about 30 min. I run outside, so I'm not 100% sure of the distance.

I was supposed to do day 2 today, but I woke up at 6am & looked outside. It was raining, the wind was blowing, and the temp was only 8 Celcius (about 46 F). The rain is supposed to let up. It better - I really need to get out tomorrow! It's days like today that I wish I had a treadmill.

Hey Friends!
I did W4D2 today and it went well! I am wondering how much faster I should be though...I did 2.11 miles in just under 32 minutes. S-L-O-W!!! I keep telling myself endurance first and speed will come later when I get used to running this much and when I lose some more weight. What do you think? I was running with both ankles wrapped in supports from rolling/spraining both of them this week...but I cannot say I am much faster when I am "whole"!!! Thoughts?

I'm going to the doctor today to have my knee looked at. I haven't exercised since Friday and it hurts when I wake up. Just want to see what I've done to it so I can prevent further injuries!

I'll let you know. I'll keep the epsom salts in mind. We have a whippet (like a greyhound) that races, so we do have that on hand. Why would I think of it for him and not myself??? DUH!!

My knees have been hurting too. My massage lady/former personal trainer said to soak in epsom salt for my muscles and I read the box and said that it also helps with joint pain. Not sure if it works or if it is just a placebo - but it only costs a little over a dollar to buy at Wal-Greens. Just need to put on lotion after cause it dried my skin a bit.
I haven't tried the tensor bandages - maybe someone else can give us some insight to those - I'm interested as well.

Hi guys! I just ran W4D1 this morning. I usually don't look at what the workout will consist of, and just follow my podcast. However, I checked out Week 4 last night, and got a little nervous when I realized (not counting warm up/cool down) I'd be running twice as long as walking, but it was great. Anything I run longer than about 2 minutes seems to go quite easily. I must hit my stride or something. I was also amazed at how much further distance wise I went. I run through our neighbourhood, so I don't know exactly what the additional distance was, but it definitely surprised me when I realized I could go longer by the lake than last week.

I did run into a couple of problems this morning. I got a stitch in my side for the last 45 seconds of the final 5 minute run. I need to alter my breathing, I guess. Also, my knees are a little sore. They feel stiff. They were fine during my run, but right now they ache a little. This really concerns me. I don't want to get injured or have to stop running. Maybe I need new shoes? Or just those tensor bandages for knees? Any ideas anyone?

I did W4 D1 today and it was great! Need to get something for ankle support though because I rolled my ankle - kept on jogging though. Hey, I had to get home! I CANNOT BELIEVE I AM DOING THIS!
I saw a photo of myself tonight and I am actually looking a bit trimmer. Woah, my dad was for real! Not just flattering me when he said he could see the difference. :o)

I can do this!
I AM doing this!

I'm going to do W4D3 over again tomorrow, I got sick with a cold and missed this past week because it moved to my lungs - stupid sickness. I know I already did it, but I just want to make sure I didn't lose much while I was sick.

Welcome Jenny!

I'm actually trying to do week 5. (I've got a bum knee right now) I plan on taking a week or so off, so you'll probably catch up to me. Enjoy it. I did do day 1 of week 5 and it wasn't too bad.

I did W4D3 today...and it was great!! My biggest problem is finding a good rhythm and zoning out a little. I can for a minute or so, and then I start noticing the pain in my calves and the HILL I'm trying to get up. One of the WALKERS in the park was walking faster than I was running!!!!! I'm a little nervous about week 5...but I've made it this far, so I'm sure I'll be fine.

A Few Rules of Running from Mark Remy:

1. You rarely regret the runs you do; you almost always regret the runs you skip.

2. Not everyone who looks fast really is, and not everyone who looks slow really is.

3. Running any given route in the rain makes you feel 50 percent more hard-core than covering the same route on a sunny day.

4. If you care even a little about being called a jogger versus a runner, you're a runner.

Don't let the weather get in your way! Jodi, val, and I ran in some sprinkles last week, it actually was nice because it cooled us down, and then it would start and stop again. Or go to a local gym - call around for the best daily rates, or see if they have a hourly rate too - then just pick the cheapest one and go and get your run in! No excuses!!! plus it is nice to get a change of scenery and try out the gym experience if you have been running outside. Plus you can sometimes get some free advice from the employees. :)

Hey girls! You know what? I did my W4D1 yesterday night and it was fabulous! I never thought could be so easy, and I felt really great afterwards.
I'm so proud of myself.

Janice, I totally feel the effects of TOM on my exercise. I just don't have the energy I normally have. I would agree that it's probably a fluke day due to that. I'm hoping that as my fitness level improves that the effects of my cycles diminish.

I have to say day 3 kicked my butt. I had done really well earlier in the week so I was surprised to struggle. I finished and didn't stop until I was supposed to, but WOW!!

I'm very pre-TOM right now and extremely bloated. I also don't sleep well during that week either. Bad combo, but it's behind me now.

I plan on continuing on to week 5 as I do think it was just a fluke day. I'm motivated and ready to kick butt again.

Do any of you experience different runs during your "week before"??

Good luck to those that run tomorrow!

I did day 2 this evening...and it kicked my butt. I changed my route a little bit and came across a few unexpected hills. I HATE hills...but at least I'll get my butt and legs a little more toned! I'm looking forward to day 3 on Thursday!

I'm doing W4D1 today. I had worked up to starting Week 6 quite a few weeks ago, but got "distracted" and didn't get on the treadmill for a few weeks. :( Anyway, I decided to start back up at W3 which I did last week. So this is my second time through W4 and I hope it goes well!

Life does "get in the way" sometimes. Glad you're sticking with it. It would be easy to give up, so good for you!!

I'm hoping to do day 3 tonight. It will depend on the weather though.

It is no one's fault but my own, I could have squeezed it in if I really tried!! Oh well, life happens!

I did W4D1 yesterday. I was a little nervous about 5 minutes straight, but amazingly, I made it through both 5 minute sections with no real problems. I'm loving week 4!

Tonight I'm doing W4D3 with Jodi - it is SO nice to have a friend, we push each other, Day 2 was the first time that we had to do our own thing on the last half a mile because the humidity that evening was affecting us differently, It was keeping us both back, but her a little more so than me. but we both finished and walked a few laps extra. The other gal that we run with is training for a marathon and this program is helping her set a good foundation to work from. we do our program and then walk extra laps at the end so she can finish her time for her week. I think without our program she'd be a little lost and walking more instead of jogging.

I guess I'm first! I finished W4D2 yesterday and it was awesome. I think this program was just perfect for me. I'm sure I wouldn't have been able to run a block before and now I can do 5 minutes without stopping. I'm able to get into the zone and feel like I can go further, but I'm trying to stick with it.

I have asthma (mild) and haven't really had any issues. I'm sure this program is helping me build lung capacity too.

Tomorrow will be day 3 and I'll let you all know how it goes.!

Enjoy your run!
