In January of 2003, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) recommended that doctors "consider treatment for patients who test outside the boundaries of a narrower margin based on a tart TSH level of 0.3 to 3.0. " This was backed up by research done by the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (NACB), part of the Academy of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, and presented in their Laboratory Medicine Practice Guidlines for the Diagnosis and Monitoring of Thyroid Disease.

Late in 2002, NACB had reported that "In the future, it is likely that the upper limit of the serum TSH euthyroid reference range will be reduced to 2.5mIU per L because more than 95 percent of rigorously screened normal euthyroid volunteers have serum TSH values between 0.4 and 2.5 mIU per L."

As of January 2008, most labs and many doctors are STILL using the outdated wider range, leaving millions of people in limbo with TSH levels between 3.0 and 5.5 -- where some doctors consider them hypothyroid and others consider them 'normal' or 'euthyroid'.

New Guidlines:
Hyperthyroidism - Numbers below this are considered hyperthyroid (overactive) Below 0.3

"Normal" or Euthyroid - TSH is between 0.3 to 3.0

Hypothyroid - Above 3.0
