Breakfast and lunch are my main meals and then some sort of fruit later before 5:00 pm. I have stopped all eating after 5:00 because I always go to bed around 8:00. The not eating 3 hours before bedtime has really helped me!

My own personal challenge has been to eat much smaller portions and to drink more water - After only a week of doing both, I have lost like 4+ pounds and it has made a major, major difference in my acid reflux. ( I was dealing with acid reflux like 3-4 times a day, every day previously, now I may have a slight discomfort only every 2-3 days) I'm pretty excited by this!!

Breakfast & lunch are my biggest meals of the day. I eat light (sometimes just cereal) in the evening around 5:30. I stop eating altogether around 7:00 or 7:30 pm. Besides taking Ranitidine twice daily, I think limiting my eating at night is the biggest factor in controlling my symptoms.

That's good. Be aware that some people find that drinking a lot of water at one hit can aggravate reflux, too. If that is the case, a little and often is better, as well as experimenting with different temperatures of the water.

Yes, I had the hoarseness for several days.
My primary doctor has set up an appointment in March 2017.
She wants me to journal incidents (what I was doing, what I ate, stress level, etc.)
I will not eat anything after 10pm -- this will be part of my new lifestyle.
I must drink more water, much more water.

Are any investigations being done re that burn? I ask this because you mention hoarseness following it. It really DOES need further investigations (Scope down the throat) to see just what is happening. There can be very serious consequences of it not being investigated properly and there being treated accordingly.

Just joined SparkPeople 2 days ago. After a doctor visit last week I will not eat after 10pm.

Had a horrible Gerd experience last week while bending over to pick an object up the reflux went to my sinus & exited my nose. Worst burn I ever had - ate 8 Tums & about 20 crackers.
Had a horrible headache the next day & hoarseness for two days. Never want to have this again.
I'm also a chocoholic and need to have it only once in awhile not every day.

I've set an alarm for 7 p.m., and I don't eat after that. I have another reason. I have some vitamins/supplements I take at bedtime that have to be taken on an empty stomach, so that helps keep me honest.

It's hard for me, since I have Night Eating Syndrome. I have to force myself to eat during the day, because I don't get hungry at all until 7 p.m. or so.

I'm trying to do the same thing. I generally eat dinner around 6-8pm and it seems the later my last meal is the worse the GERD is. Sometimes so bad that I have to sleep sitting up. Just started to eat no later than 6pm. So we'll see how this goes tonight. emoticon

I've been reading up on reflux and have taken the suggestion to not eat 3 hours before bed. But then hunger keeps me from falling asleep, so I do get a snack. I'm trying to give falling asleep hungry a try.

I have been eating my lunch and supper a little later then most people, so , I am not hungry and do not eat later at night and if I do eat I have a 100 calorie healthy snack, like the small natural almond packs I buy that are 100 calories each. I also have no fat yogurt on hand that is 35 calories each. emoticon

Perhaps you could walk us through a couple typical days of what you have and when. It MAY be that you are eating the calories but not getting the type of food to keep you full for later on.

JENNYBELL1,

Have you ever logged your foods accurately? The eating you described seems to have an awful high saturated fat content! Butter, Mayo, whole milk, etc!

Just wondering.........

I need to stop eating late at night. I also need to stop drinking diet soda late at night too. I had a bad heartburn attack that kept me up most of the night last night because of it.

I am one who HAS to eat before I go to bed, otherwise I suffer. I generally eat my main meal around 6 or 7 p.m., but as I go to bed usually around 11, I HAVE to have something then. I don't eat rich foods, during the day, and evening it is usually something like piece of banana, yoghurt or Toast and hot chocolate. I ensure that it is something that takes a while to digest and contains Tryptophan which helps aid sleep. If I don't have something, I wake during the night with hunger, and also acid burn.

If, however, it works for you - good one :-) but something that struck me is that those who don't eat after say 6 p.m. or so, and have nothing till breakfast,AND are Diabetics, it isn't a very good idea to go that long without food.

If I have the calories to spare and need them, no problems eating late.. It is the what I eat that causes problems..
I don't do juice especially orange juice, or pork protein..

Juiced fruits can be overkill, if the fiber is with it okay..

Not only eating at good times is important but also not laying down after you eat. I have asthma and see a pulmonary dr. She recommended eating 5-6 times in small amounts. I also found out Acid Reflux is very common with asthmatics, and makes it hard to keep asthma under control.

I usually have my supper about 5pm but I often do also snack at night. I must try to do better with not eating 2-3 hours before going to bed. My bed head is elevated. I have a hiatal hernal and don't have heart burn... like pain...but have acid up as far as my throat. I have a colleague who had so much reflux that her teeth are all rotting so she had surgery on her esophagus.

Got to go..... people at the door!!

I also have a bad case of acid reflux and I have to eat before 6:30 pm and cannot digest salads after that hour as it stays in my throat...I find that I wake up around 4:00 am and I cannot go back to sleep until I eat something...Do any of you have any suggestions...I eat just a fruit and yogurt before bed and that only helps until that time... emoticon emoticon

I have a very hard time not eating late at night because I eat when my husband gets home from work to spend some time with him. I have been thinking lately that I need to start making dinner earlier though and just put his food in the fridge for later. I have also noticed though, that it depends on what I eat late at night. I have eliminated breads and pasta out of my diet almost completely, and I only eat small amounts of it once a week, in the morning. If I eat it late at night I am sure to have an acid reflux attack.

Glad these posts are here, right after I found out that I had a hiatal hernia after my heart attack 6.5 years ago I had mentioned on the post somewhere on one of my groups that I didn't eat after 8 P.M and someone couldn't believe that would make a difference of having pain and not getting to sleep good.

I don't know about you but I take my med (protonix) faithfully and try my best not to eat late. I DO NOT eat hot dogs any more in May I ate one and it did not go down well I did not realize that was the cause of the chest pain I thought I was having another heart attack and was in the hospital over the weekend with a stress test and all, thank God they found nothing and it had to be the hot dog and my hernia not agreeing.....

I have an especially hard time NOT eating at night because I find I am way too low on calories and stuff at the end of the day. I can't use the meal plans cause they don't have one for people with milk products allergies!!! Once I ate all the breakfast they told me to and I was so stuffed I didn't even want to go to work!

So encouraging to hear about those of you who are struggling with eating at night. I was on the way to the kitchen. you reminded me of the terrible pain that I had a few nights ago. I find it is just as difficult eating appropriately to manage the GERD as it is to count calories etc. So many of the foods i would eat to keep calories low are now out of the question. The hardest are grapes and tomatoes and avoiding black pepper when we eat out. your posts are so encouraging. Thanks. emoticon

I have just begun eating dinner before 6 p.m. and it is making a huge difference in my nightly reflux. The head of my bed is raised 4.5 inches, which also helps. But really, I didn't realize how much difference it would make not snacking after dinner.

I still need to work on finishing dinner 3-4 hours before bedtime otherwise I need to sleep part of the evening sitting up. The problem is that weekends I eat breakfast, often no lunch or possibly a few nuts and an earlier dinner often at a restaurant; however, on workdays I eat lunch at 1 or l:30 and dinner at 9 or possibly slightly later because I am not hungry and may get a heartburn or possibly preasure in my chest, or an inability to swallow. Do you have any ideas of how I can eat on weekdays lunch at work and still eat a dinner at 7 or 8pm.

HELLO.....CCRYTO ,THATS A LONG TIME TO WAIT BETWEEN MEALS. BUT IF YOU AREN'T HUNGRY , I SURE WOULDN'T EAT , TILL I DID GET HUNGRY .
THATS TOUGH...FOR ITS NOT WHAT YOU EAT DURING THE DAY ,AT LEAST I DON'T THINK SO,THATS AFFECTING YOU ? HAVE YOU TRIED WAITING LONGER TO ALLOW FOOD TO DIGEST BEFORE YOU GO TO BED? THAT SHOULD HELP.
MYSELF I USUALLY EAT AROUND 10:30 LATE BREAKFAST, TODAY I HAD 4 STRIPS OF BACON , I SLICE OF 7GRAIN BREAD TOASTED WITH BUTTER, COFFEE WITH WHOLE MILK.
FOR LATE LUNCH /DINNER COMBINATION AT 5:30, I HAD A REGULAR MEAL, OF MEAT, VEGETABLE ..LIKE TODAY I HAD 5 BIG FRIED SHRIMP,WITH A BAKED POTATOE,WITH SOUR CREAM AND BUTTER, AND GARDEN PEAS WITH A LITTLE MAYO IN THEM. OH AND I HAD A SNACK AROUND 3PM, A SLIMFAST SNACKBAR,THE PEANUT BUTTER CRUNCH ,I EAT IT AS A REG.CANDY BAR,(WE FIND IT AT A FOOD BANK CHEAP,AND IT SATIFIES MY SWEET TOOTH,PLUS IT HAS MINERALS ,VITAMINS ETC. IN IT .AND IS ONLY AROUND 100 CALORIES.
HOPE THIS HELPS....THE MAIN THING I HAVE NOTICED WITH ME, IF I ATE LATE DINNERS WITH FOODS WITH GRAVIES,MAYO,BUTTER,FRIED FOODS,TUNA SALADS,THEY WERE TRIGGER FOODS FOR ME , OR IF I STUFF MYSELF AT NIGHT WITH ANYKIND OF FOODS....TO MUCH OF IT , I WOULD THEN HAVE PROBLEMS WITH HEARTBURN ETC .REFLUX. HOPE THIS HELPS....

YOU GOT MY INTEREST UP WHEN YOU SAID ORAL SURGEON AND ACID REFLUX IN SAME SENTENCE. HOW BAD DOES THAT STUFF HURT PEOPLES TEETH? THE REASON I ASK MY HUSBAND HAD REFLUX SO BAD THAT HE WAS UPCHUCKING IS WHAT I CALLED IT .THAT WAS WITH HIM TAKING TWO KINDS OF MEDS FOR HIS STOMACH, PRILOSEC AND ANOTHER PERSCRIPTION ..I WAS CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT THAT ACID WAS DOING TO HIS TEETH,BUT SINCE HE ISN'T EATING AS MUCH AT NIGHT EITHER LATELY, I HADN'T NOTICED HIM DOING THAT IN A WHILE...((THANK GOD))) JAN emoticon emoticon

HELLO.....I FIND IF I ELEVATE MY BED TO HIGH,IT CAUSES ME TO HAVE LOWER BACK PAIN AS WELL, BUT I STILL ELEVATE IT AS HIGH AS I CAN AND BE COMFORTABLE.
I WISH I COULD BE HAPPY EVERY NIGHT WITH A BOWL OF CREAM OF CHICKEN SOUP( I LOVE IT )FOR DINNER. BUT ITS LIKE MY BRAIN THINKS THATS NOT ENOUGH ..HAVE TO HAVE OTHER THINGS AS WELL. WHEN I FIGURE THAT OUT AND CAN GET VICTORY OVER WHAT EVER THAT IS ..GREED, STARVING MENTALITY, WHAT ???? TILL I FEEL FULL,..I KEEP EATING . WHAT IS THAT ? JAN emoticon

Lately I have been trying to cut down on the evening snacking. I believe I have been sleeping better because of it.

I find if I stop eating at least 2 hours before laying down and NOT laying on my right side helps me.
I have the head of my bed raised up 5 inches too.
Also I can't eat large meals but several smaller ones.
Everyone is different so I hope you all find what works for you.
Mary :)

I am simply miserable if I eat a heavy supper so I try to eat lightly at supper and I also try not to eat any later than 7:00. Eating at that time both satisfies me and keeps me from wanting to snack later. I can sleep with the bed lifted at the top but can not sleep with a pillow as my neck will suffer greatly the next few days. Taking my meds every day is also a must!

I have learned not to eat so late or at least not to go to bed soon after I eat because this is when the pain starts. I am going to keep doing this. I have to take my prilosec every day because after 3 days i throw up and get really sick.

I tend to eat dinner too late because I don't get home til 7pm and I am not hungry when I get home and I want to eat healthy -vegetables and protein at night. I don't need to lose weight but I don't want to have gerd. What do you eat during the day what times and what quantity. I usually wait at least 7 hours after I finish lunch to eat dinner because I don't get hungry. In the am I take Prilosec.

Hi.... MrHobbit here. Just joined yesterday and this is my first post. I read about not eating after 5 or 6 PM and think that this is a good idea and will start that this evening. Thanks for the advice GALAXYSTAR1.

An oral surgeon I went to has really bad acid reflux like I do and he told me to not eat after 5 at night. So I started that about 3 years ago and I no longer am awake at night in pain. I still elevate the head of my bed and sleep on a pillow wedge but it does help me if I eat before 5.

Believe me, I'm living proof, that not eating after 6p.m. helps greatly. I eat my last meal and don't eat again until breakfast. Helps a great deal!!

Since I overeat at night ,and then have problems when I do lie down to sleep, like indigestion .I plan to not eat so late at night .
