I'm going to piggyback on Patsy's (Forestpal) comment about The Martian by Andy Weir and suggest that it be considered. It has an epic first line!

From Amazon:
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn't ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

You must maintain unwavering faith that you can and will prevail in the end, regardless of the difficulties, AND at the same time, have the discipline to confront the most brutal facts of your current reality, whatever they might be.

The Other Woman by Joy Fielding

Hello, I’m Nicole Clark. I’m going to marry your husband.” The young woman was stunning and her message stunningly clear when she told Jill Plumley. What wasn't clear was how Jill could save her perfect marriage and her attractive husband from the younger, sexier, very clever Nicole. The frightening thing was, Jill knew that David could be stolen. She had done it herself. She had taken David from his wife when she, Jill, had been the other woman. And David was still a prize catch: handsome, rich, successful and irresistible. Yes, Jill knew what it was like to be David’s mistress; she knew everything that would happen. But she didn't know what to do about it.

Winter world (The Long Winter Trilogy) by A.G. Riddle is a Hard Science Fiction, meaning it has more hard science than regular science fiction. I wonder if "The Martian" is considered hard? If you haven't read it, by all means make it your 1st choice.

The earth may be entering an ice age, and scientists & gov'ts struggle to survive it. Don't let the catagory "Sci Fi " deter you. This is a good book.

Please post any suggestions you have for January in this thread. I'd like to leave this open until January 18th so we can vote on it between the 19th and the 25th.

Please post a summary and a link to the book on a site like goodreads.com or Amazon.com.

For easier access for many of our members who use their libraries exclusively, please check the published dates and avoid suggestions that were published after February 1, 2019.
