By law those triglycerides are out, but you still have to think about them according to the news report. They are not out for all countries. I wonder if imported foods can still have them or what they have to disclose. Food can contain a tiny amount of things per serving and not be counted. Sometimes you just have to wonder how much information is important compared to how much is just to get you overconcerned! I guess the bottom line is we just have to do our best and still live our life.

I did check a few labels yesterday. I was specifically looking to see if any had transfats. It has been in the news here how bad they are and what diseases they can cause. Thankfully, all the labels I read had 0.

Interesting recipe Meg. I usually just make pumpkin custard and skip the crust. I use one can of evaporated milk so I might read the label on the milk and see what the difference is. I'm not sure how much of a Thanksgiving dinner I will make this year as it will be just the two of us. There will be company over Christmas so I might save dessert for then.

Meg, my MIL used to make that one (with eggs instead of substitute, too). I forgot all about it, think I'll make one for Thanksgiving.

Didn't read a label today, but did look up nutrition values of some fruits and vegetables.

I'm slacking on this challenge but will start, especially since I've started eating soup for lunch. I'll take a look at the label on my can of Progresso today.

I wanted to share a SparkRecipe that I made on Sunday that hit the "I'd like something sweet after dinner" button.

recipes.sparkpeople.com/reci
pe-detail.

I did make 2 substitutions. The first is that I used 2 eggs instead of egg substitute. It only added 10 calories per serving and I'd rather use an egg than something that I need to read a label for. ;) The second is that rather than the 1.5 t cinnamon, I used 1t cinnamon, and 1/4 t each allspice, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger to make it more pumpkin pie like. I also dropped the water to 3/4 c as suggested by a reviewer. Anyway, it turned out great. It's easy to measure an 1/8 of a pie. And it's just sweet enough.

I usually make my own sauce Bev. I stay away from the sweet types because of hubby's diabetes. I made chili for lunch and dinner in the crockpot. I should have checked the sodium because something, I'm guessing the beans, had a lot of salt. I don't think it would have been our home canned tomatoes. Next time I will drain and rinse before I throw them in.

I usually check carbonated flavored water to be sure artificial (or sugar) sweeteners are not used. I checked the milled flax seed today and it was 100% flax seeds (bought those). Looked at almond butter noticed sugar and palm oil--surely didn't buy it! We do buy a natural chunk peanut butter without sugar. I don't like it nearly as much as the sugared stuff--so it is much easier for me not to eat it. Hubby likes it too much! It does separate and you have to mix it. We bought mostly whole foods today.

That is so funny Bev! I buy bottled water for the shop and they had a good sale on it at the local grocery store so I bought 4 cases. Now I need to check those labels, although I think the brand I bought is pretty good for that stuff. The reason I buy water is because the well was dug too deep many years ago and the water is not the greatest. Prefer not to drink it but I do feel bad paying so much for WATER!
I checked the peanut butter jar the other day and didn't realize that the second ingredient is sugar. No wonder it's so good.

I read the label on the Peach Ice Tea gallon jug. I was amazed at how much sugar in a serving - 32g. I usually don't drink it (as I am not one for cold tea), but I bought it for our community group potluck and hardly anyone drank it. So, I decided to drink it this week. I had a two pound gain which I can only attribute to that. I threw the rest out tonight - I just don't need that sugar. I am going back to water for my meals.

Didn't cook or shop today, so didn't read any labels. Oldest grand wanted to have dinner at the local Chinese restaurant that has a buffet. So I made my usual selections, but only got half as much as I usually do. I was pleasantly surprised to find I was satisfied, and saved a lot of calories.

I used mostly whole foods yesterday with all of my cooking/baking. 100% whole wheat flour and steel cut oats (no additives), frozen cherries (no sugar added).

I gauged my order at the mexican restaurant yesterday by calorie count. My friend ordered a grilled chicken salad with mexican ingredients and it listed as 1200 calories. I ordered 2 carne asada beef tacos with beans and subbed lettuce for the rice. I emptied the tacos onto the lettuce and discarded the shells. Calorie count for the whole thing was 720 but I didn't have rice or taco shells. So felt better about it. Was perfectly happy. I routinely do this at Mexican restaurants. Order the burrito with salad and empty the tortilla, throwing it away. Carol

Its important to read the ingredient list as well. If any type of sugar is in the first 3 ingredients, don't buy it. Molasses, corn syrup, etc. Carol

I read several labels yesterday and based on what I read, did not eat those items. I was going to put ketchup on my turkey burger but there was 4 g of sugar and since I'm doing a "no added sugar" challenge on another team, decided I didn't need it.

Amy, you are right. All things are not created equal.

I read some labels in the grocery store and changed a brand.

I read labels to make sure I am not eating added sugar, empty carbs, and other ingredients that don't resemble food.

Reading labels is good. It is nice to have choices. The Dr. Oz show yesterday (I don't always watch it or support everything presented either) had a very interesting segment on this very topic. All carbs are not the same and eye catching packaging is not always what you think. There are better and best choices for many things.

I read labels most of the time too, but will try to do better.
I’ve not been very good at cutting calories as I should. Depressed because I’ve been feeling so lousy for so many months now

Here it is October already. The big eating holidays will soon be here and we need to be aware of what we are eating. Our nutrition challenge for October is to read labels, especially before purchasing new foods. It is always healthier to eat foods as close to how they are naturally, but that isn't always possible. So let's learn how to read labels and look for hidden sodium and things no one can pronounce.
