Carrie - You are absolutely amazing with the amount of projects you're able to get done.

My UFO was to finish the ORL top and quilt it. LOL. By tomorrow the top will be almost done. I'll have three rows left, which should take me through Saturday because they're the 1, 3, and 5 block rows in the corner. But my dreams of having it quilted were somewhat laughable. My batting will arrive Saturday and I'm going to go to the LQS and get backing fabric. Because doing a pieced back with excess fabric from the front at this point is also somewhat laughable.

Its been two weeks and I"m feeling much better every day. Once I shower, I need to pick up some things and get on with my day. Probably doesn't included much sewing. I need to go to the grocery store for food that my grandkids will eat. We have a very large ham to cook for tomorrow night and I need potatoes and green beans. And some pineapple. I've been searching through boxes to find Christmas decorations. I found a box that belonged to my MIL. Will keep what I can use and the rest will go off to some other place. So glad I got the tree up and it looks pretty. Carol

Stripping feels so good Linda! I'm enjoying the process of getting rid of stuff. One of my LQS is moving to a bigger shop in Destin. She is having a sit and sew on Dec 5 to work on Good Fortune. I think I will plan to go and catch up with whatever there is to catch up on. And see her new shop. CArol

I cleared out at least 5 yards of material today. I made 4 pillowcases for grands for their Christmas gifts and I sorted out a bunch of fabric that was evidently cheap. It was stiff and I knew I'd never want to make anything from it. Threw it in the garbage and cut up a bunch of smaller pieces into 5", 2 1/2" squares and 2 1/2" and 1 1/2" strips.

I love using neutrals like that. Jelly rolls are so expensive and the ones I have, well they've been around for a while. And layer cakes too. I have a coordinating jelly roll and layer cake that I bought on sale. Why dont I just use them up? I managed to haul ORL around the table yesterday, exercising my left arm. That is almost done! Two sides sewn on already by hand. Today I might venture over to Platypus and start quilting the santa quilt I have. If I can finish by next week, I can send it home with son's family. Carol

OK, many years ago I purchased 2 neutral 35-piece jelly rolls intending to do a jelly roll quilt. Never did, used part of one for something else. Today I couldn't work on the Jewel Box because I'm out of the orchid Kona for the background. So I pulled out the jelly rolls, found some more strips from the same fabric line in my scrap strips, and made the jelly roll top. Not sure how many strips I used, but it ended up about 60 inches square. I still have to add a border, but that will wait because my orchid Kona came in today.

Oh, Bev, you are never a slug. Today I will attempt the binding onto ORL and use my left arm to drag the quilt around. A good form of physical therapy. I also intend to go out for a walk and go to the grocery store. There are probably a few other UFO's I could attempt as well. Carol

I didn't use batting. They live in STL and I'm sure this will just be a play quilt. If you get it, be prepared for a big mess because it is a really really messy fabric!

Wow! When it comes to UFO's you guys are leaving me in your dust!!! I did get 4 soup bowl cozies done that will be Christmas presents and picked up my granddaughters rainbow quilt again. I got several rows of that done and hope to have it pieced by the end of Friday. I am thinking of backing it with minky. What are your thoughts? When you use Minky do you use batting also? I've never worked with it before.

Carol - If I was closer I'd knock it out for you. Maybe having the one side machine sewn on for you by someone else so you can hand sew the back is the best option, that way you don't damage your drain or stitches.

Linda - Great job on the UFOs and the banners!

I wish I had sewn the binding on ORl prior to surgery. I could be sewing it on as my right arm is still good. Maybe I'll attempt it today. I could sew it on with Platypus as it has a bigger space. But dragging it around might not be good. Maybe I should just take it somewhere to be done. CArol

Cleaning for Thanksgiving has put a hold on sewing ORL together. But I think I'm going to see if I can get an ombre effect for the top. I've sorted the blocks and sashing into ones that appear dark, medium, and light and I'm going to see if arranging the blocks that way looks neat. If it just kind of looks like a mess, I'll go with random.

I finished sewing the rows for Beaded Lanterns together! Yay. I still have outside borders to do but at least I got that part done. Platypus isn't going to get much work because too much moving of the arms is required and pulling of quilts. Got the guest room sheets washed but not put on. Carol

I hear you Meg. I sewed my binding together for ORL yesterday but have not attached it. Maybe I can get to it today. When I go in for surgery tomorrow I think I have a lot of wait time, worse for hubby. I thought about taking some sewing but will probably just take my kindle and read or visit with hubby while we wait. I have way too many patterns. Most times, when I made a bag, I adapt the pattern to an easier way to do it. Some patterns use complicated methods so I deviate from them. Like strip pieceing fabrics for 9 patches rather than cutting all those squares. Carol

I hear you with the patterns though my no goes are applique and templates at this point. I don't mind Y seams. Though one of the last blocks in ORL, Bonnie had us tape a paper triangle to the underside of the ruler and use it to cut off the top of a triangle. And I wonder if there's a way that I could use that technique to modify templates so that I'm not cutting around tiny pieces of plastic.

ORL is on its way. I'm laying it out this evening to start sewing the top together. It can not come quick enough, I'm about sick of this quilt.

Thank you for sharing Amy. I know what you mean about passing up some patterns that have odd cutting sizes or Y seams. I started a seemingly easy pattern, but the cutting sizes are odd, so I've set it aside. I think I got the pattern online for free. At least I didn't pay for it, right?

I'm dragging my heels on quilting the lap quilt for my daughter in law. I'm finally using some old fabric I've had putting together roughly three quilt tops. I say roughly, because I'm roughly following two pictures and the third top will be of the left over scraps with, hopefully, hexagons or dresden plates. (both are new to me) I told you all I have quilt top ADHD. emoticon

Lots of progress is being made by many!

JJ Stitches is one of my favorite places to buy patterns. They do have a nice online website. JJ Stitches specializes in reproduction fabrics. The focus of the store is 1930 and previous. Julie is the owner of the store. She has fabric lines and she often has patterns in magazines. She has a large collection of vintage quilts and gets some of her ideas from those. They have kits and wonderful samples in their store. Julie often does something different with the patterns that are made up as store samples. I went back to the store website and noticed that she added the border to Capistrano Swallows like I did. They quilt all the samples very well too. It is fun to look at the quilting and see how they do it. Sometimes I do quilt my quilts like the store samples.

Another place that I like to buy patterns is Ye Olde Schoolhouse. It is another shop that specializes in Civil War era fabrics. The owner of that shop also bases some of her quilt samples on vintage quilts she owns. Tinker Toy Toss pattern comes from this store. I saw it made up there. Their website is not the best and they don't have online shopping. This store has fabulous samples and kits too. I do get lots of inspiration here as well. It is located in Cedarburg Wisconsin.

When we go on day trips, I do spot various quilt shops and pick up a pattern or two at those places. I also get some magazines and have made patterns from them. Often times, I change patterns to make the quilt more my own. I do try and look at patterns before I buy them to make sure it is something that I can adapt and something that has techniques that I would like doing (example: I may pass up a pattern if it includes odd cutting sizes or lots of Y seams, etc.).

Thanks Bev. Still lots to do. I wonder if I could sew the binding on ORL at church today. It would be helpful as there is room to drag it around. Carol

Love the quilt AMy. Googled the pattern. Cute one and scrappy wins the day. I pulled purple strips for the guild presidents Jacob's ladder block so that is a start. Maybe I can do that and the house block for guild today and get them off the list. ANd more pillowcases. Carol

Carol, I really should make a list, but I'm afraid of how long it would get.

Amy, you find the nicest patterns. Love this one, too.

Today I finished up the binding on the last of the 6 baby quilts. I'm counting them as finished UFOs, even though they weren't mine.

Thanks for all the nice compliments on my quilt. The name of the pattern is Capistrano Swallows. I did not applique birds on the quilt that the pattern has. I made it a little smaller than the pattern and added the red outer border. Each of the blocks has 33 pieces (more pieces than it looks like it has), but they are easy to sew.

Yesterday, I finished Tinker Toy Toss (it is the name of the pattern). I made about 4 X's the number of blocks that the pattern calls for to get it this size. I used stash for it too.

So this morning, at 4:00 am when I was wide awake, I decided to get up. I was trying to construct a UFO list to get done and I could only think of 2 things, ORL binding and Boomerang. And then it would boomerang back to me and I would start all over again, like a stuck LP record. Today I want to go through the house and retrieve all the fabric and sewing items that are languishing everywhere except where they should be. I'm going to start a list here and see if I can keep adding to it.
1. ORL Binding
2. Boomerang
3. Beaded Lanterns (I need to do this before I lose all the pieces again)
4. Burgoyne Surrounded
5. House Block for guild emoticon
6. Gift block for guild president (Jacob's Ladder) emoticon
7. Guild President House Quilt (mine from several years ago)
8. Ripples and Reflections
9. Santa OBW

I will just add to the list and check them off when done. Carol

Amy - it's beautiful.

Julie - I enjoy making those microwave bowl cozies. They turn out so well and are so pretty. When I made 8 of them for the craft fair, I did them in an assembly line manner: stitched the batting to the fabric for all 8, made the darts in all pieces, stitched them together, etc.

Wow! Everyone has great goals.

So far I only have one and that's to quilt a reversible quilt I put together four years ago. I hated it. I tried to branch out of my comfort zone and work with colors and prints I wasn't drawn to. I put it away. Then I thought I would pull it out and finish it for Christmas to give to my grandson. He likes the color orange.

BUT THEN... I gave my older son his quilt and his wife texted me about how much she liked it, etc. I told her I could make her one, what colors did she like. Lo! They were colors in the quilt I was going to work on. I sent her pics and she said, "I absolutely love it!" Okay. It's hers. =)

There are a few quilt tops I want to get started on using some of my older fabrics. I think I have quilt top ADHD. Does anyone else get this?

I WILL finish the "chicken" quilt that I am keeping for myself and also the "farm" quilt that I made for Liv. Farm quilt is finished quilting and I just have to finish the border on the chicken quilt. I plan to finish that this evening and then I can cut and sew on bindings. My goal for those is to have them done before our guild meeting next Wednesday. Then there are lots of started projects to finish up. I'm trying to get stuff done instead of starting "stuff".

Carol - That's a big UFO, but it's exciting. Clean house, new paint, new doors (and hardware). That sounds like an awesome project that you're going to love when it's finished. I looked up the beaded lanterns pattern and it looks like it's going to be gorgeous. It also looks like an alignment nightmare. I can see why you've ended up ripping out so much. Hopefully the pinning helps.

The ORL blocks are essentially 9 patches with each of the patches having been completed during the previous 7 steps. I've got my patches sewn into three strips in preparation for finishing the block. But I leave tomorrow for New Orleans for several days (After voting :) ) and get back Thursday. DH is going to iron all of the strips for me while I'm gone. Seriously love that man. So I think tonight I'm going to work on putting the setting triangles together tonight. I'm starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel on this one.

I did not attempt Beaded Lanterns yet but I'll get there. Cut out a bunch of pillowcases. Still waiting on ORL until the dust settles. Now that the construction is almost done, I want to go room by room with a deep clean, whether we do it ourselves or hire someone. Then get a painter in to go room by room. And start some replacement of doors and other things. Move some furniture, etc. That is my UFO. And a big one. Carol

One of my UFO's is a hand sewn project that would have been finished by now had I done it on a machine...but there are times I prefer hand stitching and this project lends itself well to that even though it was designed for machine piecing. Anyway, I finally pulled it out and finished one part yesterday (the snowball blocks). Next up are the nine patch blocks...

So yesterday, son and wife were coming over and I decided to sit down and try to finish up Beaded Lanterns. I should have pinned but no, just decided to wing it. Sewed on the first row and it was 6 inches too long so had to rip that out. Then I sewed the row together and attached it again, and too long. I had added a 2.5 inch strip in between blocks. Ripper again. I have it laid out on the guest bed to see if I can figure it out today. Hopefully no more ripping. It doesn't pay to hurry. I'm almost finished and I just want to be finished before I start anything else. Next up is binding for ORL. There is still so much dust in the house, I dont want to drag it around just yet. Its a big quilt. Carol

Meg, you sped through ORL! Can't believe you are nearly finished! I still need to sew on the binding but that will be done prior to the new clue coming out. This week is clean up week and install another set of draperies. I might get into the sewing room to finish up Beaded Lanterns. I am so close. All of my sewing retreats were cancelled so I dont have one scheduled until March. Carol

I have the final two steps in ORL to finish, assembling the main blocks and assembling the top, which thankfully shouldn't take as long as it could since I sewed the sashing halves together last month.

So the goal for November is to finish the top and quilt it, leaving the binding for the first part of December.

And if by some lucky break I can actually finish ORL in November with time left, I still need to sew the cafe curtain for our master bath.

I need to finish attaching binding to one table runner, machine quilt and bind another, sandwich and finish a third...then there is the wall hanging that needs to be sandwiched, quilted, and add a binding...I need to finish old projects before starting new ones although I'm drooling over a few recent patterns I found...

With my beach trip in 11 days... I'm taking my sewing machine and a whole lot of projects.

I have squares to sew together for 3-4 quilt tops.
2 quilts to sandwich -- hopefully will try my hand at machine stitching them together!
I have the Yellow Brick Road pattern & materials ready to attempt to start putting together.
And 8 small quilt tops to add borders to along w/ batting, backing & then tying them.

Should keep me more than busy over 7 days!

My goal is to sew the binding on ORL and get that done! Finish right before the next one starts. And a few other finishes as well, a bag I'm making, Beaded Lanterns, Boomerang and more. Always something. Carol
