BTW, for those uneasy about picking up trash wear gloves--I wear good rubber gloves. After picking up trash, depositing it in the bin at the park, and going home, I wash the gloves in warm water with soap and bleach.

I get so many comments thanking me for picking up on my walks, but I've yet to see anyone else doing it. Sad.

Am doing all four things all month.

Should be easy enough since we've already been doing those things.
Hubby and I have gotten into the habit of taking along a small bag that fits into a pocket and picking up plastic bags and bottles we see on the roadside as we walk. It felt a little weird at first, but we got used to it.

8/3 emoticon Unexpected opportunity to do a trash pick up--some jerk had thrown take-out and a glass bottle in the middle of the street I was emoticon riding on. Parked my bike and cleaned it all up. Finished the ride to the grocery store and back and found...I had a flat tire!

I already pick up trash on my walks around the nieghborhood so that one is easy. But I don't have a bike for week three.

I'm a vegetarian and I bike/walk to work and to run errands everyday. I do pick up trash sometimes, but I'll do it more often! I shop at Whole Foods, but living in Las Vegas, we don't have any local fruits or veggies! lol

I'm in. My BF and I do the first two, anyway. We pick up recyclables that people have tossed on the ground, and we are vegan.

I don't own a bike, but I can substitute walking. (Was hoping to get a bike with my tax refunds, but my accountant is WAAAY behind, so I don't have that money yet.)

Love the challenge!

I can do #1, but I'm already a vegetarian, and I live a 30 minute drive from the nearest store, so any other challenges for others like me?

thanks!

I don't own a bike. But I do use a backpack and my feet and legs on weekends to do errands. Grocery shop, shop for books, stuff the backpack and then go back home. Usually spend a couple hours or more walking, shopping, etc. Always picking up trash. Buy fruits and vegetables locally and at farmer's markets when possible. I try my best to park my car on Friday night and try very hard not to use it at all on the weekends. Living in Los Angeles area is hard if you want to go anywhere, as most things are at least 20 miles from where I am.

Well, I walk to work every day, and eat about 5-10 vegetarian meals a week, if you count all the meals of the day. I don't have a working bike to use, but I do walk across the street to get pet supplies. AND I buy local veggies and fruits when I can! So I think I'm up for most of this.

I'm in! I am always picking up trash on my walks anyway, so I got this in a snap. Riding my bike for groceries...not happening. I feed a family of four, and I live about 20 miles from where I work. But I'll find at least one errand to ride it on, for sure!

How about a couple alternatives to the walk and bike ride for those of us who are disabled and can't do either? I can ride a recombinant bike at the gym and walk only a short distance due to degenerative disk disease. No problem doing the meatless meal, though.

I'm doing everyone but riding the bike, I walk 1.5 miles to the stores to get needed items. After my bike wreck, I'm still needing to get my bike fixed, which I think is probably because I'm afraid to ride in this traffic to do errands.

Week 1, August 1-7: emoticon emoticon
Take an eco-walk at least 3 times this week. Take a garbage bag with you on your walk, pick up litter/recyclables around your neighborhood.

Week 2, August 8-14: emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Add at least 1 meatless dinner with week. If you can use local fruits and veggies, even better!

Week 3, August 15-21: emoticon
Ride your bike on 1 errand this week. Whether it be to work or to pick up groceries, riding your bike is great exercise and decreases use of fossil fuels and air pollution.

Week 4, August 22-28: emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon
Try to do at least 2, if not all three, of the challenges from the first 3 weeks!

A BIG emoticon to the team members who helped with suggestions for this challenge!
