Walk In Dry Places

Things I canít fix.
Acceptance.

One of the sad realities of life is that weíre awash in disorder that we canít fix. All around us, the world seethes and festers with aliments and injustices that are beyond our control.

We can react by becoming angry or by making quixotic efforts to solve some of these problems. Our best course, however, is to apply our 12 Step program to life in this world. The Serenity Prayer suggests we accept what we canít change. A slogan reminds us to set priorities (ďFirst things First.Ē) The Eleventh Step remind us to always seek Godís will.

This will enable me to live effectively while doing my best to serve others. In time, I may even discover that I can fix a few of the seemingly insoluble problems around me.

Iíll realize today that I have the ability only to do certain things within my sphere of experience. Iíll see to it, however, that I do these things well.

Spark People Team Leader, GLITTERGIRL, from Team, "I Can't Do This On My Own", helped me reach my goal in 2012. I was able to maintain my weight for several months, but now I have to get serious again as much of my hard work I let go of, putting my focus on another issue. I will keep on, until I get back to my goal.

What is real Open-mindedness?
New Ideas

When weíre urged to be open-minded, whatís really involved? Open-mindedness certainly canít mean accepting every idea that comes down the road, because some of them are worthless or harmful.

Open-mindedness really means a readiness to put our deeply held opinions aside long enough to consider new ideas. If we simply refuse to listen to anything new, weíll avoid the bad ideas, but weíll also miss out on the ideas that can help us.

If weíre really honest, we can look back to see many ideas that helped us after we reluctantly agreed to consider them. Itís important to screen ideas as they come to us, but we canít block them out completely. All a good idea needs to help us is a fair chance.

Iíll work at being more open-minded today. Itís possible Iíve been blocking out ideas that could help me.

The desire to recover is a gift from God. I was able to hear the promise of recovery on the day God decided it was time. Then I had to ask for the strength to do each next thing.

Our usual Meditation, "Walk In Dry Places", is not available today, but I feel this is one is a very good for today, reminding us of staying clean & sober.

MEDITATION
Today's Gift

Changing

The old saying is true: You can lead a horse to water but you canít make it drink. Itís the same with addiction and recovery. People can take away our drugs and put us in treatment, but no one can make us clean and sober.

When it hurts enough, when weíre scared enough, when weíre sick and tired enough, when weíve lost enough, then weíll begin to change. But we have to want to change. Itís the key.

What am I willing to do to recover?

Higher Power, help me to want what I need; to want what is best for me.

Confidence In the next phase.
Assurance

ďGod has carried me this far. I will not be let down now.Ē These are brave words of recovering people who find themselves facing new doubts and fears.

Thereís nothing unrealistic about this attitude. Those of us in 12 Step programs and beneficiaries of a miraculous chain of events that brought our movement into being. Our responsibility is to continue carrying the message by proving how the program works.

Itís our success in dealing with lifeís problems that eventually attracts others to our fellow ship. The best proof of how our spiritual program works is showing how our Higher Power continues to solve problems in our lives.

We donít always know what the next phase in our lies will bring. We can only know that with God, all sorts of wonderful things continue to be possible.

Though I canít see around the corner, Iíll know today that my Higher Power will guide me smoothly and safely through the next phase.

No self-deception
Honesty

Most of the time, other people donít really deceive us. We deceive ourselves by refusing to face life realistically. We often believe false information simply because we want to believe it.

Living on a 12 Step basis should enable us to face reality without becoming cynical or pessimistic. If a friend appears to be lying to us, for example, we can accept this as a single lie, not as a complete betrayal. In addition, we learn not to lie to ourselves. This helps us avoid shaky business schemes and unrealistic hopes.

At the same time, we can still retain our capacity for believing in wonders and miracles. We have experienced enough miracles to prove that they really happen.

Iíll use my head as much as possible today to help keep my heart from getting me into trouble, but Iíll remember that itís whatís in my heart that counts.

Competing with others
Attitude

Some of us never liked close competition. We preferred to be clear winners or not to compete at all. We didnít like to have competitors breathing down our necks.

This attitude kept us from doing our best, and we made a mistake when we thought we were competing with others. Weíre actually competing with ourselves at all times, trying to do better than we did yesterday. The presence of other people only helps us to set performance standards and goals.

Once we accept the idea of self-improvement, we can delight in competition. We can take satisfaction in situations where, though we were not number one, we came in a close second instead of a sullen last.

Iíll know today that Iím always working with others but only competing against myself.

Am I Special?
Self-understanding

An early professional believed that alcoholics get into trouble because they thought they were SPECIAL. Thinking we're special certainly creates all sorts of problems.
It's true that every person is special in that no two people are exactly alike. But we're also part of the human race, and we are bound by the general limitations that apply to everyone. We got into trouble partly because we thought we were special and could break universal commonsense rules.

When we stop thinking of ourselves as special, we also become more teachable. We learn more from the experiences of others. Then we realize that we're both special and generic, and we use his knowledge for self-improvement rather than self-destruction.
I'll remember today that I'm special in certain ways, but that I'm also part of the human race and subject to things that apply to everyone.

Can We Fix Other Peopleís Problems?
Problem Solving

In Twelve Step work, we never run out of people who face serious problems. Weíre often tempted to use our own expertise and resources to fix these problems for others.

This can be a mistake. It is always risky to undertake such assignments without a great deal of thought and understanding. Such attempts to fix others usually deal only with symptoms rather than causes.

Unless another person is totally helpless, the best course is to share experiences and knowledge with others, but to leave the problem solving to them. We should not encourage anyone to become dependent on us, nor should we set ourselves up as godlike individuals who have all the answers. We actually may be showing off instead of helping, and we may also be robbing others of the self-confidence and growth that come from fixing their own problems.

Iíll share my experiences and hope today, while refraining from trying to fix people. I donít have answers for everybody, and itís wrong to believe I do.

Treating loved ones worse than strangers.
Personal Relations

Some of us grew up with resentments about the way our families treated us. It was confusing to notice how nice our parents could be toward strangers and then how abruptly they could become abusive toward us.

The best release for this kind of resentment is forgiveness, but we should also ask ourselves if weíre guilty of the same faults. Are we discourteous and inconsiderate toward our own children and family members? Do we apologize when we offend strangers, but not when we hurt our own children?

We should try to treat everyone with fairness and kindness. No family member should be subjected to our incessant criticism and rudeness. We owe them the same courtesies we extend to strangers.

If Iíve had bad examples of abusive treatment in my own early years, Iíll change the pattern by treating my own family with fairness and kindness, starting today.

Watch out for peer pressure
Maintaining Sobriety

Itís said that peer pressure often draws young people into alcoholism and drug addition. As adults following a recovery program, we also are susceptible to peer pressure.

At a cocktail reception, for example, some people may express mild pity that weíre having ďonly soft drinks,Ē as if weíre doing a form of penance. Or they may express exaggerated admiration for our success in recovery. Even this can make us feel different.

We need not be critical of such reactions. The fact is that we are somewhat different when weíre staying sober in situations where excessive drinking is normal.

We should not, however, make this our problem if others draw attention to it. This is peer pressure, but we should be mature enough to dismiss it.

Whatever situation Iím in today, if I know Iím on the right path, Iíll not be swayed by the opinions and comments of others. Their opinions cannot affect me if I know Iím doing the right thing.

ďThatís the way I amĒ
Getter Better

Bad behavior is sometimes justified as a form of self-expression: ďThatís the way I am.Ē Others are supposed to tolerate this or risk losing a friendship.

In our program, we should modify any behavior that offends or hurts others. If we have been too brutally frank in our comments, for example, maybe weíre at fault. What we call honesty is really a form of cruelty.

If we persist in ďbeing the way we areĒ even when it doesnít work, we have nobody to blame but ourselves when things go wrong. Other people are entitled to be treated fairly and decently. Just as we want to be. Perhaps ďthe way I amĒ is something that can be changed for the good of all, ourselves included.

If I have habits and traits that cause friction with others, Iíll take a new look at them. Itís possible that this is something I can and should change.

Who is sincere?
Sincerity.

We sometimes dismiss others peopleís relapses with the explanation that they didn't really want to stay sober or that they lacked sincerity of purpose.

We have no way of gauging just how sincere anybody really is. Even in trying to understand ourselves, we may detect traces of double-mindedness that got us into trouble. Even if weíve been sober for years, the old desire to drink can be lurking somewhere in the back of our minds. Itís wise to assume that this is so even when thereís no conscious desire to drink. If hidden desires to drink still persist even after years of sobriety, it points to the persistence of the diseaseÖ. Not to oneís insincerity.

It may even be that sincerity, like sobriety, has to be sought on a daily basis. Perhaps we are capable of being sincere today, and then lapse into insincerity tomorrow. To accept this is a sign of prudence and maturity, and perhaps even a measure of humility.

Iíll seek to be sincere today about the things that really count. If I know Iím insincere in certain areas, Iíll seek more understanding about it.

Group Intelligence
Getting Ideas

ďAll of us know more than any one of usĒ is the saying that applies to 12 Step groups. No matter how much experience any single individual has, itís surpassed by the collective knowledge of the group.

Thatís a good reason in itself for drawing upon these groups. And there are others as well. We need the pool of intelligence that the groups build up over time. We need the groupís strength when our own is waning.

We also learn help that comes in surprising ways. The person in the group who seems just knowledgeable may express an idea that is just what we need at the time.

The group can meet many of our needs if we give it a chance. Regular attendance at meetings will keep us in touch with the groupís ideas.

Iíll stay in touch today with ideas that come from members of my group. Joined together, we have lots of knowledge.

Founders with clay feet
Sound thinking
With any organization or society, the time comes when people find fault with the founders. The faults of these pioneering leaders are examined and perhaps even used to discredit them.
Founders are only human beings, and they are likely to exhibit the human shortcomings all of us have. If these founders turn out to have clay feet, perhaps the fault is ours for idolizing them in the first place.
The real role of a founder is to lay the foundation for further building. Unless the society grows, improving over what the founder had in mind, it is not likely to survive. Its real work should be to surpass the fonder so as to be of greater service to others.
I'll be careful not to put anyone on a pedestal and then complain about his or her clay feet.

Flattery or Praise?
Human relations

Flattery and praise are social lubricants that serve human purposes. But flattery is merely manipulative, while genuine praise is beneficial to everybody.

Many of us with troubled back grounds also have trouble giving and accepting praise.Sometimes we mistake flattery for praise and use it either to manipulate others, or allow ourselves to be manipulated. Perhaps weíre either too proud or too self-conscious to deal with real praise.

Another mistake is in believing that praise should be given out only sparingly, only after outstanding achievement. Not so, we need to give and receive praise continuously in order to reach higher levels of achievement. Knowing itís importance, weíll also learn how to avoid flattery.

Iíll offer both verbal and silent praise today in my dealing with others. Weíll all benefit from it.

The True Security
Security

We can feel insecure for many reasons, but the fundamental reason is that we do not have a firm anchorage in our Higher Power. This anchorage must be our true security, and it is really the only form that can survive any attack.

Regardless of who we are, we can know and feel that our Higher Power is guiding and directing us at all times. If we find ourselves being threatened by a person or situation, we can deal with it by knowing that our Higher Power is in charge of all outcomes. If we envy somebody, we must get back to an acknowledgment of God as the source of everything.

If we feel inadequate around people who seem to be immensely self-confident and secure, we should not try to imitate their manner and behavior. Rather, we should simply put our trust in our own Higher Power, and our feeling of true security will express itself in proper ways.

All the things we view today as being secure are probably only temporary. Our ture security can come only from God.

My sponsor often shares the analogy that alcoholics anonymous has given us the ability to see ourselves for who we really are. If we can see ourselves for who we really are, we can make changes or not! When I finally took a good close look at me, I realized why the people who loved me wanted me to stop drinking.I could not see the truth has it really was, once I saw the truth, little by slow I was able to make changes and become a useful and whole person.

No tap dancing around problems.
Inventory

Our program calls for a ďsearching and fearlessĒ moral inventory, not only in the beginning, but as we continue to follow our new way of life.

What this means is complete honesty about who and what we really are. We should not tap-dance around our problems in order to evade responsibility. This willnot bring the cleansing we need for real sober living. We need deep changes, not mere surface ones.

Difficult as it is to be fully honest, itís made easier when we remind ourselves that itís all for our own recovery. We benefit in proportion to the amount of honesty we bring to our inventory. If itís searching and fearless, the results will be far-reaching and substantial.

I will not shirk from facing the truth about myself as I go through the day. What I need for self-improvement will be revealed to me.

Missing meditation again, and As Bill Sees It, is a fill in for today.

As Bill Sees It

The Fellowshipís Future, p.207

ďIt seems proved that A.A. can stand on its own feet anywhere and under any conditions. It has outgrown any dependence it might once have had upon the personalities or efforts of a few of the older members like me. New, able, and vigorous people keep coming to the surface, turning up where they are needed. Besides, A.A. has reached enough spiritual maturity to know that its final dependence is upon God.Ē

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
^^^^^

Clearly, our first duty to A.A.ís future is to maintain in full strength what we have now. Only the most vigilant caretaking can assure this. Never should we be lulled into complacent self-satisfaction by the wide acclaim and success that are everywhere ours. This is the subtle temptation which could render us stagnant today, perchance disintegrate us tomorrow. We have always rallied to meet and transcend failure and crisis. Problems have been our stimulants. How well, though, shall we be able to meet the problems of success?

Due to the missing of our usual meditation here, this one is so fitting for us in recovery.

Keep It Simple

If the spirit within us withers (dies), so too will all the world we build around us.
óTheodore Roszab

This is what happened during our illnessóour spirits were dying. Our relationships were dying. this is because addiction is death.

And recovery is life! The Steps breathe like into us. Our groups breathe life into us. We start to heal because we once again feel hope. Weíre less afraid of what tomorrow may bring. As our hope grows, others feel it too.

Weíre starting to slowly rebuild our world. Weíre building our world on the Twelve Steps and their message of hope.

Prayer for the Day: I give myself to life. Higher Power, work with me as I rebuild my world.

Action for the Day: Iíll talk with a friend about hope. Iíll see my hope as a sign of how close I am to my program.

I thought that I wanted to be mad! I stayed angry all the time, nothing was the way I wanted it be. I thought that some how life revolved around me. I would tell myself I was angry and deserved to be angry. I look back at all the times I sit on my pity pot and said poor me, and so I did pour myself another one. This disease alcoholism is cunning, baffling, and powerful! Bill T. use to end his comments as so "I haven't had a drink today and I'm not mad about it"! I'm beginning to understand things more clearly, I am not the man i use to be!

I used to use a bad attitude as a way to get people around me to react negatively, giving me an excuse to drink. Having a good attitude often elicits the same from others.

Overcoming A Bad Disposition
Temperament

People with bad dispositions, like people with drinking problems, do not recognize how difficult they are. They accept their bad disposition as normal. Some people even declare proudly that theyíre in a bad mood until theyíve been awake several hours or had three cups of coffee.

We do not have to put up with a BAD DISPOSITION. If we find ourselves touchy or grumpy at times, we should immediately release this to our Higher Power. There is a better pattern of thought and feeling to replace anything that comes across to others as a bad disposition.

Itís surprising to learn that we donít have to live with a bad disposition. Whatís even more surprising is that weíll also be happier and more relaxed without it.

A bad disposition, we learn, is just so much unnecessary baggage we donít have to carry.

Iíll be relaxed and friendly at all times today. I have neither a need nor an excuse for a bad disposition.

Quite a few times I have been shot down in flames! I always needed to know why! Sometimes there are no good answers, just the fact that it wasn't meant at that place and time. Through acceptance and reliance upon a higher power, rejection comes and goes, I keep my life balanced and things seem to work out just as planned, not my plan, but God's plan!

Sensing Rejection
Self-Esteem and Maturity

We laugh when a recovering person tells how he "learned to quit just before he got fired." We sometimes can tell when a rejection is coming, and we take steps.... such as quitting.. To avoid further pain and humiliation.

In the recovery process, there still may be times when we sense a coming rejection. If it does come, we must remember that rejections is part of living. People receive rejection for all sorts of reasons, including wrong ones.

When we do sense any kid of a rejection in the works, our best course is to let it happen, accept it, and put it behind us. If we are living our program, we don't need to feel pain or humiliation, as rejection is simply part of normal human experience.

I'll try today to be as accepting as possible in everything I do. If others choose to reject me, I will also accept this without resentment or self-reproach.

The Right Place for my Type
The Right Work

ďYou cannot change your type, but you can make yourself a brilliant success I that type,Ē Wrote Emmet Fox. This is a reminder for people who are discontented with their lot in life, and this includes most people who participate in 12 Step programs.

There are many different TYPES of people, and all types are good. We only need t find where our type is required and then do our best in that place. We will have immediate advantages, because all of our energies and talents will then be applied in the right way.

We should never spend a moment envying other types of people who are brilliantly successful in their activities. Our happiness is to be found in our place, not theirs.

If Iím doing whatís right for my type, Iíll give it my very best. If Iím in the wrong place, Iíll know that my Higher Power is guiding me toward the right outlet for my talents.

Creating good impressions
Attitude

Thereís a saying that we have only one chance to make a good first impression. Thatís true, but we always have the opportunity to make good lasting impressions.

The secret of making good impressions is contained in one word: ATTITUDE. Whatever we really feel will be expressed to others as our true character and the impression we give will be authentically us.

The way to control the impressions we are making is simply to continue cultivating an attitude thatís consistent with humility, acceptance, and graciousness. We should have othersí best interests at heart without being meddlesome. We should be genuinely helpful.

This attitude will create any good impressions we need to make.

Working to make sure Iím thinking the right way. Iíll forget about the impressions Iím making. If my attitude is right, the impression will take care of itself.

Part of my daily routine begins each morning, just as I am doing right now. I take time in the morning to recognize my disease and use the tools that have been givin' me, to keep the obsession and compulsion of alcoholism at bay. I suffer from much more than a physical or mental desire to drink, that is just a symptom of my disease, the real problems lye within me, my spirit and my soul. Having had a spiritual awakening I seek guidance from God on a daily basis. If I start my day off with God in it, I stand a better chance of keeping an open mind, a positive outlook and a positive attitude. I suffer from a lack of power, that is our dilemma, with God's help all things are possible!

Spiritual guidance.

If we go through the day with a confidence that our Higher Power is with us, events will go better than they would if we hadnít held to this belief. We will be more effective in everything we do. We will actually have more power in all activities.

This is what is meant in the Eleventh Step; ďthe power to carry that out.Ē Knowing that the Higher power is in our lives, we also find the power to do what we believe to be Godís will for us. As this confidence strengthens and is seasoned by experience, it becomes part of our nature.

Eventually, weíll sense our Higher Power working in our lives. We can learn to accept this with the same sure belief that we accept the sunís rising and the changing of the seasons. And weíll have the power to do whatever must be done by us.

A conscious contact with God can raise my daily activities to higher levels, giving me the power of achievement.
