I have been to a few Yoga classes and they were a little "too Zen" for me. They were in Cambridge, MA where people can be "Hippie to the 10th power". I don't want to see with my mind's eye, I don't care about Shakra's and energy and communing with mother/spirit earth. It was just too crunchy granola for me.

I've recently starting doing yoga and to be honest I do struggle with a lot of the poses. I'm not to worried about this because I know in time I will become more flexible.

I don't see yoga as a workout, more of a relax and stretch. emoticon emoticon

Yoga is all about the instructor. Most gym yoga classes I've gone too have been boring. Yes, they might increase your flexibility, but stretching will do so too. HOWEVER, I really enjoy power yoga and hot yoga. To me, power yoga was more about doing the complex poses such as headstands and wheels, etc and I loved the challenge. We used to do some explosive moves in the class I went to and I really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, that instructor left the gym I used to go to and the replacement was poor. In the Atlanta area, I would recommend hot yoga. I found the heat added another dimension and it did help me with my flexibility. I used to go to the hot yoga studios in Vinings and Buckhead. They are about 17 per class although you can get monthly subscriptions which bring down the price.

I love yoga! I took a class last year at school and got hooked. I need to start bringing a mat to my workouts. My life seemed so much more centered when I was doing yoga.

This thread is super old but for anyone who's interested, there's a yogo dvd from the Biggest Loser series called 'Weight Loss Yoga' that I HIGHLY recommend [Bob is the trainer]. I bought it last month [along with The Biggest Loser: Cardio Max] and out of the 2, WLY is my favorite. I had never thought about getting into yoga before but thanx to this dvd, I'm hooked and will definitely incorporate it into my workout regimen from here on out.

I try to do yoga a few times a week for at least 20 minutes. There are modifications for those of us who are less flexible. I've found the more I do it the more flexible I become. Not to mention the benefits for my mental well being.

AlphaJuanita... definitely let me know if you hear of anything. I checked out Decatur Yoga and Fitness (or something like that) on the web and I think I'm going to ask my hubby to buy me some classes for Christmas. I hear all of the wonderful things about the strength and firmness yoga brings...plus I'd love to have a new stress management technique.

I absolutely love yoga! I got "tricked" into taking a class by a personal trainer when I first started working out a little over a year ago. They were starting a new class and were trying to get people in to try it. I didn't think that I would like it but I wound up loving it. I had so much fun and lost major inches in the process. (The month I started taking yoga I lost 30 inches all around...waist,chest,arms,legs..etc.) I now go to yoga class three days a week and have slowly built up my flexability and strength. Still no yoga master though but I still love it. I used to love in the ATL before circumstances and I moved out of state. Have you tried your local YMCA? I know the local Y where I am now offers yoga. (Three different styles to be exact, basic yoga, power yoga and a pilates/yoga mix.) I can ask my friends and relatives that still live in the ATL if they know of anything and can get back to you if you like. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have found that I do. emoticon

I've considered it, but never tried it. To be honest I think I would prefer the traditional gym workouts rather than Yoga.

I love it and have been to a few classes. They are taught on the other side of town and at times that are not convenient for me. I do try to take Pilates at my local gym 3 or 4 times. We use some of the yoga moves. Try Fit TV if you have cable and I've used DVD's by Rodney Yee for stretching "AM Yoga". emoticon

I've been doing yoga off an on for a while now, and I'll admit that it can be frustrating. My frustration comes from not feeling like I'm flexible enough for some poses and not having the muscle strength to hold others. I like it because it does increase your flexibility and requires you to concentrate on specific muscles. It also helps to put your mind in a meditative space.

I've been contemplating adding yoga to my workout regimen. In the past I've tried to get into it, with no success. I usually end the workout thinking 'Did I just do something?' What do you get out of practicing yoga, and are there any good classes/instructors (in Atlanta) or videos that you'd recommend to get me off to a good start?
