I work out at home or outside (walking/gardening and walking the dog at least a mile daily)

I use the WATP dvd's and some two George Foreman ones as well as different ones here on the computer (usually led to them thru SP!) - and I do them at home! Plus I walk around here, and do a lot of yardmowing and gardening in the summer and fall. I'd love to try out all the gym equipment sometime but we live ~15-16 miles from the closest gyms, and to do that consistently just isn't practical for me.

Same question back to you: Do you prefer the gym and classes or do you work out alone at home or outside?

Definitely staying at home with family and leftovers (not usually quiet -- board games, sports, movie binge watching, pulling out leftovers a couple of times and taking long walks)

Candles - they just give me a sense of serenity. Candles and background music.

Which do you prefer? The excitement of Black Friday shopping -or - the quiet peacefulness following a day of Thanks-Giving?

I agree with you, "autumn" sounds much more poetic. And I agree with the bittersweetness of the season - I appreciate the beauty of the colors, yet dread the leaves dropping, yet enjoy raking them up and like the 'cleaned up' feeling afterward. I hate the cold, but love the coziness of the coal furnace heat. I miss the outside work, yet look forward to turning my attentions to neglected inside housework. And yes I love the smells of the pumpkins and apples being baked into some delicious edibles!! And time together with family increases as the days are shortened.

I've been keeping candles burning a lot lately, so they will be my centerpieces.

Family favorite recipes or experimental new ones?

( I'll get that e-mail written this week!! =)

I don't own crisp percale sheets, I just chose that one out of the 2 choices you gave me because it sounded like something I would like. I did a search on Amazon but all I got was Percale Weave, is that the same thing? I love soft sheets!.

I refer to this season as autumn, for me, it feels more traditional than saying fall, Also, autumn sounds so much more poetic. emoticon

I don't know how to explain it, I just know that it's the most bittersweet season of them all and my favorite. It brings back so many sweet memories of my mother, the aroma of baking, trying out new recipes, even the song she loved, Autumn Leaves by Nat King Cole. I guess that's why it's so special to me.

(I have to know: Where do you find crisp percale anymore? Any websites? Amazon?? I love percale, but find it almost impossible to find anymore, everything is "soft and luxurious - and hot to me!!)

I love going to the theater and seeing a new movie on the big screen, but my husband doesn't like to go........anywhere!! So we watch our DVD movies at home when he has time to fit it into his schedule. It used to be our "cozy time", sitting under a cover (cool weather) on our small sofa on our sunporch, and I looked forward to our movie times, but he has decided he can't sit there anymore as it hurts his hip if he sits too long, so now I sit on the sofa and he sits in a rocking chair. It really took a LOT away from our movie nights.

So, an easy question for you: Do you call this season "autumn" or do you call it "fall"? Any reason why?

I've always always been a silver (or white gold) person. Every once in a while I'll wear gold, but only because I'll have something on the clothing that is "gold", so wear the jewelry to match.

T-shirts (without logos). I don't like showing my arms, I prefer to keep the flabbiness hidden. emoticon If I ever lose this weight, I want to start wearing jeans again, I haven't worn jeans in years! And I agree, the older one gets the more expensive things are. My sneakers must be specifically for walking and extra width, and of course that cost extra. As you already know, the vitamins are more expensive too.

Flip flops wherever I can, but am finding that I'm needing to go with the more expensive ones these days as I need that arch support that didn't used to matter to me. I do like sandals and got a pair at the end of last season that I'm looking forward to wearing with two sundresses that I also bought at the end of the season last year. If the weather would just cooperate a little...! And for extended walking, I definitely prefer sneakers! (And they can't be the el-cheapo ones anymore either. This getting older gets expensive sometimes!!

thinking summer... sleeveless tank tops or t-shirts ?

Kathy, thank you so much for caring, I really appreciate it.

I'm going to a chiropractor because the physical therapist made my neck pain worse. The person I have now is very gentle and the doctor is very thorough with his questions and exam.

I have a misaligned spine, a pinched nerve, arthritis and a protruding cartilage, all in my neck. The chiro is my last hope because I don't want steroid injections or surgery.

I've tried all kinds of pillows, the only one I can stand right now is a flat one and I use a soft rolled up pajama top for under the curve of the neck. I'm very hopeful with this latest treatment though. Only time will tell.

Julia, just thinking about you and your neck issues... What kind of pillow do you use? I used to think that an elevated soft fluffy pillow sounded most comfortable. But then a few years ago, I was having neck issues too and my relief came from two things. First I had an old system setup with my computer and the monitor was too high above my keyboard so I was always tilting my head backward, lifting my chin upwards to see the monitor. Changing that helped a lot (at that time it meant getting rid of the big bulkiy monitor and buying a flatscreen that I could set at eye level). And then --- I started analyzing what was happening with my neck while sleeping and realized I was really titling my head, in an upward sideways tilt with that fluffy pillow - I tried buying the flattest pillow I could find, so that it was just raising my head enough to keep it level / i.e. so that my spine & neck stayed in a straight line (I'm a side sleeper). This made a world of difference for me. Plus I learned to consciously relax my head, neck, and shoulder muscles when I first laid down, as I realized I was keeping my neck very tense to prevent hurting it - which WAS hurting it!! I don't know if anything like that could be playing a part in your situation or not, but just thought I'd share. I had been going to a chiropractor at the time, and I had discussed it with my dentist as well (questioning him about jaw alignment and headaches), nothing they did was helping, but then I just started analyzing myself what I was doing. Neck pain is so wearying, just that constant nagging hurt with sometimes sharp pain when you're not expecting it. And also, though my chiropractor did nothing in his office to help me, I did find a set of neck stretches on his website that helped to maintain it once I did those aforementioned things. I haven't read any followups to your recent blog about trying a chiropractor. I think i'd be more rpone to try a physical therapist...

Hoping you 're not thinking, "Why don't you just mind your own business, you don' t know my situation?" I'm certainly not trying to minimalize your situation, quite the opposite. Hope you're feeling better! And if not yet, then soon!!!

Since I don't set my own alarm clock, I'll rework that question with my answer: I seldom get up when my husband does, but tend to stay in bed and get some of my best sleep in that extra half hour or so after he leaves and I can stretch every which way across the whole bed.

So, are you a side sleeper, a tummy sleeper or a back sleeper? emoticon

I'm with you on the plastic containers. I swore that when my husband retired, I was going to get rid of all plastic containers, and I did get rid of some but not all, and so I still tend to go to plastic out of old habit. (Am I repeating questions??)

Glasses - and bifocals at that!!! And - last time I went for glasses, I knew what I wanted, but the lady assisting me, told me numerous times that "I wouldn't like those" (no-line bifocals), and that "she didn't care for those on me" (larger darker frames, what I call the "intellectual" frames) - I wasn't in a stand-up-for-me mood that day apparently, because I came home with these wire-framed glasses that I hate ( I think they are very old-womanish), with the bifocal line in the glass! Our insurance covered this pair, but now that I'm "rich and wealthy", I may get myself another pair; otherwise I am stuck with these for two years! I do need them to see, especially up close.

Sunny days: a cap with a visor, or sunglasses?

I actually don't mind doing either one, with the exception of washing greasy plastic containers! Ugh! I hate it with a passion, although now I follow your tip of squirting some liquid dish washing liquid directly inside the container. It makes it a little easier, but I still hate doing it! emoticon

Up to this point, I've only used the generic (i.e. think WalMart) brands, but I'm thinking it is time (age!) to get more serious about supplements. I did look at the Naturelo supp. on Amazon, per your example, and it looks like the users have done their research and are very pleased with this brand. I've been hearing a lot about curcumin, I may give it a try along with their women's multivitamin. (I just started receiving my own Soc. Security $$, so am feeling wealthy and better able to treat myself to some self-care items - like supplements!!)

Least favorite chore: DISHES!! We don't own a dishwasher, and never have, so I feel like I have spent at least a third of my life washing dishes!!! And with my DH retired, he does a lot of frying meats, etc, so it seems the dirty & greasy pans have greatly increased.
... I actually enjoy doing laundry.

And yours?? Laundry or dishes??

Cottage cheese with peaches (on lettuce if I have lettuce on hand) is my favorite. Also like it with pineapple. I like yogurt too, except that I always adds something crunchy on top of it like Cheerios, or granola.

And I go with the tablets or capsules. Just quick and easy, I can do several of them with one gulp ;)

One multivitamin/mineral pill or individual supplements (and if the latter, what all do you take? )

I am a binge eater and a sugar addict, I battle my cravings every single day. My best weight, the one I feel most comfortable at is 115 - 120, (I'm 5' 1') I weigh 150 right now, and it's all accumulated around my stomach and thighs and it's very hard on my varicose veins. emoticon
I can abstain from hardcore sweets, such as cookies, cake, candies, etc., a streak at a time, but I binge on anything else I can get my hands on just to satisfy my sweet cravings. Being a vegetarian doesn't keep me from overeating or bingeing, lol! I've been a vegetarian for over 17 years since I stopped drinking and I am the total opposite of disciplined! emoticon
I know just how you feel and what you're going through, my friend, I really do!
And yes, I don't mind starting at beginner level workouts, especially now that I have hurt my neck and have osteoporosis. That really woke me up!

I am lactose intolerant, so I started drinking rice milk when it first came out, then soy milk, which I don't like at all. Thank goodness for almond and cashew milk!!

We'll keep pushing forward no matter what!

I prefer hand-held weights!

Is it possible, Julia, that you don't need to lose weight? I know you mentioned back pain and varicose vein problems, but perhaps you just need to do more muscle strenthening. Ties in to this next sentence: As to why I thought you were accomplishing your goals: you were walking so regularly and using your fitness tracker, and you had this amazing record of not eating sweets/desserts, you are a vegetarian, and your meals that you mentioned always sounded so healthy, I just assumed you were making great strides. You just seem so disciplined to me. // You are younger than I am, but perhaps you are experiencing some of what I am, and that primarily is that my metabolism has so changed after midlife that losing weight is unbelievably hard. Last week, in the frigid temps, I walked every day, and we have hills everywhere, the one day I walked three miles, I increased my water intake, cut portions, ate more fruit - and this Monday (weigh-in day), I weighed 2 pounds more than last Monday. It's disheartening, to say they least. My starting weight for this new year was IDENTICAL to where I was Jan 1, 2017. Do you want to scream together???? I'm trying to be more realistic this year, and have set as my goal to lose 1/2 pound/week. Surely that should be possible, but as mentioned above, I'm off to a terrible start scalewise. Instead of losing 1/2, I gained 2. We can't give up on ourselves though, Girlfriend!! We're in it together. I liked your blog where you said you're not ashamed to begin again at the beginning. emoticon emoticon I am definitely overweight, every picture shows me that! I know I need to make more dietary changes, continue on with the cardio walks and increasing my distances and paces, but I think I also need to add more strength training exercises. I need to dust off my dumbbells!! There are certainly enough exercise demos, and videos here (Leslie Sansone's WATP among them!!!) to meet my every need, if I can only stay disciplined for the long-term! [Having my husband retired and being around more - and wanting to eat all the time! - is making it all hard for me too - and I'm not one to exercise in front of someone, even (or especially) my husband... ]

As to soy milk, vs. almond milk ( ...yes, see? Those are the kinds of questions you ask, both healthy choices!!), my answer is: Neither!! I tried soy milk one time, never have tried almond milk. I was raised a dairy farmer's daughter, and our youngest daughter is a dairy farmer's wife. In the area of dairy, I'm a supporter of it. We like and use all of the dairy products (except I drink very little milk anymore, I've gotten more lactose intolerant than I used to be.)

My question for you: As an aid in exercising, do you prefer hand-held weights emoticon - or - stretchy bands emoticon ?

Kathy, all throughout 2017, I consistently gained. From January 1, 2017, to Dec.31, 2017, I gained 13.2 pounds. I'm short and the extra weight puts pressure on my back and varicose veins. This past week, I am up yet another pound, I have to get a grip! It's never been this bad before. emoticon
PS: What made you think I was accomplishing my goals? Just curious. :)

I used to LOVE hot chocolate with marshmallows, but my digestive system does not handle milk at all well, so I've given it up. I do love my cup or two of tea every morning. A day doesn't start until I've had my tea! emoticon

I like the idea of making new year resolutions. I spent the whole 2017 gaining back the weight I lost in 2016, I am very disappointed at myself and I can't figure out why I haven't been able to get motivated enough to make any progress. My 2018 resolution is to finally start making progress again, get my mind to cooperate. I'm going to explore books on this subject and see if it helps. I have read the Beck Diet Solution book, but it didn't help at all. I shall keep looking.

Thank you for those sweet words, Kathy, I feel the same way about you. I'm so happy we met. emoticon

Merry Christmas to you too, dear Julia!! I truly count our friendship to be one of my greatest blessings this year! There is just something very special about your friendship, so I feel with all certainty that you are a very special person. God's blessings to you and your men for a blessed today tomorrow!

Oh, I always go with New Year's resolutions although in reality they are about the same every year. And I always think, "Maybe this is the year that I will actually make some permanent life changes, with the NY resolutions a jump start for that. I've been thinking about them for the past month, but haven't fully formulated them yet!

Same question back at you, but I think I already know the answer, because I see what you have very intentionally accomplished this past year... but still answer and comment!!

Flowers, but a light scent. I had a perfume one time, don't even remember the brand name, but the scent was Lily f the Valley, and I loved it. I rarely wear perfume anymore though.

Regular curlers for special occasions. My hair is too long for me to style with a brush, especially in the back, unfortunately. I haven't been to a salon since the 80's. I trim and color it myself. Someday I will have the guts to cut it short professionally.

Lacura facial cleanser , then Night Cream moisturizer (found these at Aldi's and really like them - and I like the price of them too!!)

For styling your hair do you use rollers (curlers) or curling iron or blow dryer and styling brush?

Both! Gift bags for loose items, such as toiletries, and wrapping paper & bows for larger single items. emoticon emoticon

I too feel that I'm looking more like my mom at my age, especially around the face. That's ok with me because she was a beautiful lady, however, she didn't make the effort to exercise or eat healthy like I do now, so I feel I can improve on how I age. Did that make sense? emoticon

Very NOT satisfied!! Between the wrinkles and the pounds and the hair that I can't find the perfect style for, it's a tough battle! But it is very wise advice to control the negativity and find the positive even in that mirror's image emoticon (or worse yet, in pictures!!) In these past few years, I have started looking more and more like my mother did at this age, and my husband said many times in the past, that my mother was a very pretty woman, and so I often use that as my positive self-talk. Of course, it would help a lot if he would say that to me now...!! emoticon

Is one ever satisfied with their appearance? I wonder...I know I'm not. Last Christmas I was 13 pounds less than I am today and yet I look through my journal and I was disappointed in how I looked. I do make an effort to stop thinking negatively when I look in the mirror most of the time!

For myself, neither. I like the leggings with tunics and boots look, not so much when the tunics disappeared and the tops became much shorter with the leggings. Not too many people are thin enough to look well with that look. just my opinion... Jeans and leg warmers are better, but again the jeans need to be tight fitting for the right look, and not many people look great with that. And the thought of ME wearing either is not a pretty mind picture - maybe ask me that again after I let you know that I've lost 40 pounds!! (I DO have several friends who are my age, and still look fantastic in either!)

I prefer air-dry also unless I have to be somewhere at a certain time.
90% of my Christmas shopping is for others, but I always end up treating myself to something. This year it's a Bodyshaper and a large container of Maxwell House ground coffee on Amazon. emoticon emoticon

I greatly prefer air-drying for the sake of my hair! I find I can get away with it for about two weeks after getting it cut, but then need the extra "fluff" that blow-drying gives it. I'm not much of a stylist either way.... I'm a plain Jane!

Well, that depends on who wins out, and since I've become a bit more assertive here in later years, it's usually me!! My husband likes having the tree up through several weeks of January. Me, I prefer getting it all taken down and put away before the New Year, for that fresh. clean start to the year. I must admit a lot of "warmth" goes with the decorations, but I love the open space that is created and it energizes me. The cozy warmth is relaxing and enjoyable, but I tend to sit and read or watch movies and enjoy it all a little too much, instead of doing anything vigorous like cleaning ... or exercising ... which is NOT a good thing.

New Question: Are you usually early, right on time, or late?

[Dear Julia, thank you for understanding me!!! Sometimes I feel like I am just a Scrooge, but am coming to grips with the decision that it is more an age issue -- sigh.... And yes, those old TV Christmas specials are certainly classics in their own right!! I love them too, it reminds me of my own childhood, when they were probably new programs!]

After 40 years of marriage I really should know better, but yes, I continue giving hints. And no, the hints are never taken. But that's okay, it's fun to see how he "tries" on his own. I understand that shopping totally overwhelms him, and he always buys me socks which means he has probably wandered through the bras and underwear to find the socks -- which I find hilarious!! I'm sure he is totally embarrassed, totally out of his comfort zone. I call that love. LOL!!

Same question back at you!! Hints or suggestions??

I totally understand your feelings regarding too many visitors on Christmas Eve. I agree this is a day which should be peaceful and focused on the Lord. I truly enjoy spending the holidays with my two boys now, it's rare that they are home at the same time every day, so spending quality time with the both of them bring so much joy to my heart.

When my son was little, we would watch the Christmas specials on TV, Charlie Brown Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph, etc., instead of movies. Those were the best times. Now we put on Christmas music. (Definitely after Thanksgiving).

I myself really prefer a Christmas Eve church service with lots of candlelight. When our own kids were still all at home, I liked family too, but as the grandkids came into the picture (who I DO LOVE dearly), the "mood" changed entirely. With rambunctious boys who like to wrestle and throw things, and girls going into the bedrooms (and going through drawers) and more adults than we have room for, and everyone talking loud to be heard above everyone else, it just gets crazy and my whole house just basically gets trashed, and I get all stressed feeling inside. But my family really likes getting together for Christmas Eve - here of course. But I myself am really back to wanting a serene Christmas Eve service, again focusing on the birth of my Savior. And yes, singing Silent night to candlelight!! (I always feel like such a Scrooge at parts of Christmas, I like the events leading up to it, but I just don't deal real well anymore with too many people at one time. What I would like, is if each family came one at a time, but that gets voted down immediately. And I am thankful that the grandkids get along as well as they do, and that our original four still like getting together - there is always a lot of laughter and a lot of hugs! And so I go along with what everyone else wants, and occasionally it works out that I get my church service.)

And that's me talking way too much again!!

And when does Christmas music / movies begin in your home - before or after Thanksgiving?

Our tradition is, family time at home. We attended a Christmas Eve mass the year my mom passed away, and I loved it, it was very moving. The priest lowered the lights and by the light of the tree, we sang Silent Night.

Cider! With just a bit of zing to it. I actually love it hot with a cinnamon stick in it. As to eggnog, my mom used to make it and without the nutmeg, and I loved it! But I've never had bought eggnog that I like.

I'll have to say, neither. I've tried eggnog a few times through the years, but the word "egg" in the Nog, puts me off, lol! Unfortunately, I've never tasted cider.
In our family, my maternal grandmother and my mom made a coconut version of the traditional eggnog, it was so good, made with cream of coconut, vanilla extract, and evaporated milk, it contained alcohol though, that was before I quit drinking of course. emoticon

I guess I will answer that with "pumpkin pie" - because I don't think I've ever eaten sweet potato pie. And actually what I bake is neither, as I use butternut squash in mine (from our garden); I'm guessing flavorwise it is right inbetween the other two. I actually think it tastes like pumpkin, but definitely has the color of sweet potato. I actually think it is the spices used that are mostly tasted.

Pumpkin pie or Sweet Potato pie?

Wow! You're going to have a full house on Thanksgiving! I have never been confident enough to cook for so many people, the most I've cooked for is about 8, and that's with us included, but you are correct, I rather cook Thanksgiving dinner than visit.

Nowadays it's only the 3 of us, and I love it! Husband always cooks the turkey, dear son takes care of the stuffing and dessert (depending on what the dessert is) and I cook the rest. Then if we have time, we play a board game. Unfortunately, this Thanksgiving, hubby works, so it's just my son and me for most of the day, which is fine with me!

I too like to keep the dinner traditional, just like my grandmother and mom cooked it. I am a Norman Rockwell gal myself, as you can see on my sparkpage, lol!

(Gee, I'm sorry to answer this on the same day that you posted, but I kept looking for you last week, and was excited to find you this morning!! Hope you don't mind!!)

You are the city sophisticate, and I'm the country bumpkin! How is it that we are still "kindred spirits"?? I love it.

emoticon Thanksgiving - I'll be cooking, although my daughters will each bring a dish if I find I need them to. Our number should be at 20 this year. Which fills the house!! My in-laws used to come, but as they've gotten older, they can't stand "all the confusion" with our grandkids. I do understand that, and actually I'm more relaxed, as I don't do all the salads that my MIL always prepared, so I feel like my meal doesn't measure up to her expectations.. I make mine just like my mom always did. (That's also why I try to NOT have the girls bring anything, because they bring "NON-traditional things" Any other meal, that's fine, but it makes me cringe for my Thanksgiving meal. Guess it's the Norman Rockwell in me!)

And you? Visiting or cooking? (I'm predicting the latter, special for "your boys", am I right??)

I would have to say, "City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, dressed in holiday style" only because I have nothing to compare it to. I would love experiencing Christmas in the country or suburbs.

Kathy, I miss having a record player. I remember the first 45 record I bought with my allowance when I was in my teens, it was Michael Jackson's I Want You Back! LOL!

I also love the oldies, because it's what my mom and uncles listened to. I love Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, the list goes on and on.
