I had so many problems trying to open my tracker, I thought it was just me. I worked on it for 10 minutes. As I tried, I would lose my grip and it would fall to the floor. This happened over and over. I finally just gave up and put it on the counter. Of course, my husband picked it up, unscrewed it instantly and told me " It only moves a little not a whole bunch." I just looked at him.

MaryinFL2000, You got off easy. Mine arrived today with a dead battery. 62 minutes to get it open. Finally pried it open carefully.
Getting the O ring back on and closed took 3-4 tries. Should be easier next time. For me anyway, I am paying "Batteries Plus" to change the batteries emoticon
The pull strip is an awesome idea!

Ugh...I like the tracker, it's not perfect but it easy to use.....until you need to change the battery.. it is the worst and my hsnds are now sore. It was extremely tight but after about 5 min I finally got it off, then the o-ring fell out....I'm not even sure one end should be open....and getting it back together was a nightmare. I had to ask someone to help me and he had a hard time. Changing a battery zhould not take two people 20 minutes or more. I also agree when someone suggested the pull strip to activate it when new as mine was around 50% when I got mine in the mail.

Today is a new day. I can't change yesterday or know what tomorrow will bring. I can only control right here, right now.

LOL! My husband says to find a 5 yr old kid... Ours could open everything...Thank goodness they didn't pick up safe cracking.-- It took me about 3 min. and I can understand your impatience. Hope that everything worked out well in the end. I'm always worried about that clip breaking off. Can the tracker work in your pocket? I'll have to run some tests, now that the curiosity has got to me.

I don't inow why the following message is under "I can't open it." Not my problem. I have extra USB ports and can leave my dongle in. My problem is with the tracker itself. I'm a piano player with strong hands and no problem opening applesauce jars, but I've tried everything to open the tracking device and failed. I'm so sick of it, please tell me how I can just quit, stop messages popping up on my screen, and allow me to quit thinking about it. The few days when it worked perfectly, It was like a nice Christmas toy that you shouldn't really expect to go on working past midnight anyway. .

Thank you,

ScotMama, I hope this is not too late to be useful to you.

The people who don't have problems with the SparkPeopleConnect computer program, I think, are those who have the luxury of extra USB ports to leave the dongle plugged in all the time. Some have solved this by buying a little USB hub to give them extra plugs to leave the dongle plugged in all the time, so the SparkPeopleConnect computer program doesn't get confused. I need to pull flashdrives and dongles out of my laptop to pack and take it to work! So leaving the SPAT plugged in all the time doesn't work for me.

Here is what I'm doing now. Before I did this, I removed SparkPeopleConnect from the list of programs that auto-start when I boot my PC. That step is assumed in my steps below.

This is what works, but it is not intuitive! I have to allow 15 min. for all this... the PC takes longer to shut down when it has to close SparkPeople Connect and I have to allow for this before I can pack my PC away to take with me to work in the morning, for class later at night.
1. Power on the PC.
2. Insert the dongle.
3. Initiate SparkPeople Connect (I don't have it on auto-initiate because it randomly comes on and hogs my RAM-- I only want it to be on when it is capturing the info from my SPAT and xferring it to SparkPeople). I do this by clicking the start button and typing in the search textbox SparkPeopleConnect (no space before Connect) and clicking on it as it appears, then in the menu above.
5. The dongle turns green.
6. Tap the SPAT 5x. The dongle starts flashing green, then stops and stays green.

Now-- here's where I was confused. I knew to leave the dongle in when the green light was flashing, but didn't always wait until the green light shut off to pull it out and power down my PC for the night. Does that make a difference? Yes! it does!!

7. Leave the dongle in until a green pop-up SparkPeople Connect message appears at the bottom right of your screen: "Spark1 has successfully transmitted data." This is the key.
If you named your dongle something else, that will appear instead of Spark1.

8. Even then, wait until the green light disappears from your dongle. Then remove it.

9. SparkPeople Connect does not have an option for you to close it (not with right clicking, and I haven't figured out how to open the help panel when it's already running). After I have pulled out the dongle, I fully power down my PC and this shutdown forces SparkPeople Connect to close.

I see people want to stop using the SPAT because it is hard to open. I have a hard time opening applesauce jars but I still eat applesauce. emoticon I had a hard time opening mine too. What I didn't realize is that it only turns en eighth of an inch or so. If it moved at all its probably turned as far as it will go. Then if it doesn't separate, I take a small paring knife and insert the tip between the two halves to break the seal. It opens easily after I opened it the first time. It would be a shame to stop using it just because it was hard to open the first time. I really love mine. emoticon

You said you are afraid that you will lose you SPAT. Like you, I had mine 2 days and lost it. I knew it was in the house. I had everyone in my family looking for it. I finally found it. After that I put it in a little bright 2" by 3" cloth envelope with long black laces to close it. I carry mine in my pocket. It may not be exactly accurate but it works for me. If you want to put it on your foot you could thread a long bright shoe lace under the clip and tie a knot. The lace would be easier to find. For added security, you could tie it around your ankle. Just some suggestions.

I have had one on my laces for more than two months and this morning while walking in my house I found the top of the Spark Activity Tracker on the floor and the bottom still clipped onto my laces. Put the two together and waallaa it is working. I guess in time I will probably lose it. If that had happed in the snow, I might not have found the top of the tracker. I should be grateful. Well I am grateful. I am so grateful.

My problem is not about opening my SPAT, it is about my dongle not lighting up. This seems to happen almost every day. When I click the little icon at the bottom of my screen and try to refresh the Spark it shows it is plugged into the computer, but it shows a red light for Internet Connections, and also for Data Center Connection. and it tells me to check my settings or check with my network carrier. I have T-Mobile and I have not contacted them about this, as suddenly the dongle will turn green and everything works, but at least half the time I have the red light with no way of checking my steps.

I have no idea what they want me to do when they say to check my "settings."

Trying to find the silver lining in all the clouds!

I hold mine between the palms of my hands and turn them in opposite directions and it opens with no problem. You may have to add a little bit of pressure.

Opening the Tracker is horrible!!! I read the tips and even got out my jar-lid gripper to hold the Tracker while I tried until ready to cry to turn the doggone clip. I tried a small screwdriver, but couldn't figure out how to use it to give me leverage to turn the clip, especially after I got it moved a teensy tiny bit by hand. It is a delicate electronic device, after all, so I certainly didn't want to break it, despite posts about brute force :) I was soooo afraid I'd break it and be up the creek. I finally resorted to using the screwdriver to pry it open (with a scary tiny snap) but it closed okay and I hope it's working. Yeah, I've got a green light, but dang....

I am also irritated that I got the Tracker not even a month ago and the battery was down to 18% and I got a message to change the battery. Seems to me the Tracker should have one of those super-thin strips of plastic to pull out to start battery usage (like many watches, electronics, and toys have, so the initial battery does not run down before the item is purchased) only when Tracker has been received and is ready for use. It also should not be insanely difficult to change the battery. Right now my hands still hurt. I have NEVER had this much trouble changing a battery in anything and I am 61 years old.

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.

I have the same difficulty opening Sparky. And it's not downloading easily. And I changed batteries a couple of weeks ago, and it's giving me red lights and my tracker says that it's down to 19 percent. My little buddy is REALLY annoying me.

emoticon emoticon emoticon That was a bit of work but YEA I did it! What I think most people are missing is that the device doesn't open like a jar, only opens a very tiny bit.

As mentioned in an earlier string, at the bottom under the clip is a very small space....with a flat head screwdriver insert into this opening and pry off. At first I was under the impression that the top would open all the way, think this something that should have been explained in more detail.

I really enjoy my Tracker as it keeps me motivated and I still would recommend it to others as I find it very beneficial, it can be used for everything including swimming, just put it on the leg or top part of your suit (women) or the waist...works just fine.

I can't get this open. I've been trying for a week. The instructions say turn counterclockwise, but the unlock symbol is on the other side, I have tried it both ways. It simply does not budge. I'm throwing the thing away and not buying another one. This is very frustrating - 60 dollars down the drain. I won't buy anything else from Spark People site.

My battery is down to 19%. Because it appears difficult to open the back the first time, I started last week trying to get it open so I would have no down time.

I have watched the video a half dozen times. I have read the tips posted here. Nothing works.
I'm so afraid of breaking the clip.

Break it down for me, please. For those of you who used a flat head screwdriver, exactly and specifically where do you place it?

And what am I supposed to turn--the clip itself or somehow the back of the tracker? It's almost impossible to get a grip on the tracker itself without holding onto the clip.

Help. Help. Help. Details please.

I did have problems opening mine, because I have big hands and couldn't get a good grip on it, but I've found that if I hold it and I have a small flathead screwdriver I can slip the screwdriver behind the clip and gently turn it, it will open with no problem, and I am so enjoying the SPAT that the changing of the battery is minor. hope this helps.

I just bought the SPAT a few days ago but when I ran across this thread about so many people having such a hard time opening the tracker when it comes time to change the battery, I'm thinking of just sending mine back. I know I won't be able to get mine open when the time comes to change the battery. I have severe vision problems and I don't have much strength in my hands. I've enjoyed the tracker the 2 days I've used it but if it is going to be such a problem to open it, then I think my best bet would be to just return it. I don't want to be stuck with a devise in a few months I can't use because I can't get the thing open to change the battery. I'm not even sure a watch person could get this thing open.

I think if Spark People are going to sale products, then I think before they do they should make sure the product is easy to operate completely (including opening and closing it) before selling it to customers. This SPAT thing should not be difficult to open or close. Since so many people are having problems with it, maybe they need to remake the product before selling more (just my opinion).

I got my tracker in December. Today was the second time I changed the battery. I struggled quite a bit the first time but today it turned easily and was back in service in no time. Guess the first time is really the hardest.

Does anyone know what the number of the battery is in order to buy another one. Is it a standard battery? Looks like those I've used before, but can't be sure. So, how do we get more now that I've used my spare one?

I had the same problem and finally got it by turning the back to the right and then using the screw driver to gently pry it open once the back swiveled. Thanks for the help on this message board.

THANKS!!! Finally got mine open as well:):) Just needed a little more grip on the light side of the tracker, and it turned pretty easily. A little help with a butter knife and it came open.

I used brute force and a screwdriver and just broke the thing open. I'm afraid I didn't wait two minutes though before I put the battery in.

I've tried all suggestions about how to open the Act Trac. My hands are raw. I cannot see how an oblong thing can turn anyway. I've tried screwdriver and pushing down while trying to turn. I'm ready to try a sledge hammer.
Help?
The UNLOCK SYMBOL is on the left of the end of the clip. The LOCK symbol is pictured on the right. That indicates to me that turning the clip to the left (clockwise) would unlock the back. HOWEVER, the instructions say to turn the clip counterclockwise.
HELP!!!!!!!

D,

When you're trying to install and get an error, there should be a "help" button. If you click that, a report will be sent to our Support staff that gives the details of the error you're experiencing. If you can click that, it will help us figure out what's going on so that we can help you install the program.

I am so frustrated!
I got the tracker as a Fathers' Day gift. When I finally got around to trying to install it, it wouldn't work after the first day. Tech Support sent me a replacement dongle but now the program won't even run on my computer. I asked tech support to make it work or give me back my (wife's) money.

So, they wouldn't take the spark because I bought it in December and am just now changing the battery. Not fair because I wouldn't have a reason to change the battery within 30 days of buying it. I can't open it with the gloves, my husband couldn't open it (he managed to close it) and I can't open it any further to where it was before.

From now on I would tell people not to buy it. I'm also going on Amazon to tell them to avoid it, unless there was some kind of guarantee. A free battery does no good if we can't open it to install it. This thing should come with a lifetime guarantee. It should also be much easier to open. I'm honestly thinking about leaving the site.

I just replaced my battery & I think I found an easy way to open it, take a small flathead screwdriver and put it in the back of the clip and while holding it gently turn it to the left and it should turn the back to where you can get it off to change the battery.hope this helps

After a week of trying and others trying to help me, I bought another Spark. It was difficult for me to even go 10 days without my Sparkie. it is tremendous motivation for me. I like to see results, I guess.

Someone(or me) eventually will be able to open the Spark. It will become a "spare".

A Big Thank you to all the members who gave such clear and concise directions on how to help. I'll use for the next person who will try. I hope you don't mind. Believe it or not, they are installed in my memory.

Have a fun filled-weekend.

Hi all, I just went through this last week. I brought the instructions and spare battery to work and asked one of my co-workers to open it. It was tough for him, too, but he did get it open and I got the battery changed. I'm hoping that the first time was the hardest and after this, it will be easier.

I had a very difficult time trying to open my SPAT, and was ready to give up because I knew that if I used any more force to try to turn the back, the clip would break. Then, quite by accident, I figured out how to do it. For my SPAT at least, its not enough to turn the back of the SPAT to the left. You must apply pressure at the same time, and then it turns relatively easily, but if you dont apply pressure, it will not turn at all. In other words, push in while you are turning the back cover to the left. For my SPAT, I had to apply quite a bit of pressure, but other SPATs may require less pressure. It is, as DONNAISLIVING said, very much like some of the childproof medicine containers that can be impossible to open if you dont know how.

Thanks, Donna. I actually think I'll eventually open it or someone I know will do it. I rely on the tracker for motivation and know I have done my best. Silly and immature, but that's the way it is. Lack of patience led me to order the new one.

I have a bit of a plan. I have been asking an overweight relative of mine to join me at Spark People. If she does, I'll give the Spark Tracker.
Thank you for all your encouragement and suggestions. I'll let you know if the tracker does open in the future. (Kind of a my mystery, I think).

Take care and all the best on Spark people.

I ordered another tracker from Amazon last night. If I ever get the top off the old one, I'll have a spare. The irony of this is the money will come out of my grocery money. (Don't worry, I won't go hungry but will think before I buy anything.) In all, it turned out ok.

Thanks for the advice and help, Donna. I really have appreciated everyone's help. Your idea, Donna, gave me a better grasp but I still couldn't move the top. I'm pretty sure if I can't work it out it probably is my fault. My hands might not be strong enough-I'm not sure.
I'm doing something I don't like to do and that's whine and complain. So, I'll put is aside and try later.

Nancy, I was having the same issue. Try this. Hold the clip, facing the floor, between your fingers. Then take your other hand and squeeze the sides of the top and put slight downward pressure as you twist it. Or use the palm of your hand, push down and turn. Kind of like opening one of those child proof medicine bottles. That is how I got mine to open easily.

Thank you, thank you, thank you GardenChris. I have been struggling to twist it open but I was holding the clip side up and trying to twist. I turned it over ( with the lights side up) and held the clip but twisted the top and it moved easily. I think you found the key. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

hold the top and grab the little arm in the back and turn the top to the left, then right under the attaching "arm" is a little space you can now use a butter knife to pop it open.

I was afraid of breaking it myself, but it really is quite easy after you do it one time and "see" how it opens.

As long as you twist it to the open position you can use a knife or a small screwdriver to pry it open

Thank you everyone for trying to help. I guess I'm really a flop with technology. But,I still cannot open the Tracker. It's quite frustrating, but I'll continue to try.
Just one thing, Iam older and so is my eyesight. The video (for me) does not clearly indicate the position of the Spark in the person's hand demonstrating how to open Sparkie.

I'm returning mine. I actually got the instructions to do so. I feel sad because I like being able to participate in the activities, but I've had too hard a time trying to get it to sync. I tap it five times and have done so many times for it to sync at some odd tie while I'm sleeping. I don't get it. Since it is resting in my shoe. I will go back to manually entering my daily steps which is a pain, but not nearly as much as a pain as the spark has been. I wish I had never heard of it!

I've read these last few postings, and I can relate to a few difficulties with the SPAT. I thought maybe I just am not good at assembling this thing once you open it, but I see a number of you have faced some of the same problems. When I had to open up the SPAT to take out the old battery and put in the new, problems began. I watched a couple of videos and it did not help me at all. When I put the new battery in, and tried to put the back on, along with the clip it evidently got misaligned. I can't get it apart. The clip is not secure, and I can't do a darn thing with it. I tried shortly before I began writing this. I used the gloves. The gloves did not make one iota of a difference. Nothing moved. I'm afraid of the clip breaking, and as I'm applying pressure by turning the back, absolutely nothing is happening. Eventually, I will need to replace the battery, but if it can't be opened...? I've thought about asking someone that is very good at things like this, but so far I can't think of one soul. It's a shame that this tracker has a number of problems.

I had actually thought of asking a jeweler to help me out too. Have any of you done that?: And if so, how much did it cost?

It sure is frustrating!

I'm afraid of breaking it, or even losing it before it breaks, I have made a pocket on my anklet, having the SPAT clipped on the anklet, and then I turn up part of the cuff over the SPAT to secure it. Does anyone have a suggestion that I might try? They do need to perfect the SPAT. Gosh! When I hear of many besides myself having the same difficulties, it tells me something is not right. It shouldn't be that difficult.

I'm not about to put out $60. again, are you?

I will keep on, until I get back to my goal.

I def agree with WritingDiva1, it is too much work. I hope the designers will take note of this and rework that portion of the tracker to make it easy to open. You shouldn't have to wear gloves, or go to a jeweler to change the battery. Come on now!

Thanks for the info. I spent quite a bit of time yesterday trying to open the spat. It turned a little quite easily but I thought it had to go further. Today, I tried it and it worked perfectly. I had used the disposable gloves and that was a good suggestion.

I just stumbled upon this thread and glad I did. I had trouble opening mine too and ended up buying another tracker. Still haven't got the first one open yet. I will keep trying though because I really don't want to buy a new one every time the battery runs out, lol!!! I did try the gloves and it still didn't work.

I used rubber gloves which gave me a lot more power. It worked really well. I burned through the spare battery within two months and when it came time to change it again, it was a piece of cake. Good luck, Everyone! (tiny is not what my hands like to handle:)

yes, it does open extremely hard, it's hard to hold & twist at the same time. I guess it takes a lot of patience. something I'm lacking in, most of the time.

i had the exact same problem, and it drove me nuts. tech support could not help me, but i got some ideas from starting a thread as you have. it took me about two weeks; finally, one day, it worked. i was expecting a much larger movement and then after the initial twist, i was expecting the lid to come off easily, but that was not the case. keep in mind that yes, the twist movement is very tiny; you will just notice that the edges no longer line up perfectly. once i got the mini-twist done, i had to pull the top from the bottom. do it in a closed area so none of the little parts fly around. i twisted it back on sans problem, and i am praying it will be easier next time. it was suggested to me, at the height of my frustration, to bring it to a watch shop, where the staff have much experience changing batteries on all types of apparatus, which i would have done, had i had a watch repair shop around me. good luck. meanwhile, keep wearing it. it is still collecting the data.

I opened mine very easily by using a suggestion someone else gave the group. Wear disposable kitchen gloves to help your grip. It only turns a teeny tiny bit. You'll notice the corners don't quite meet up, then gently pry up the top with a fingernail or a small flat blade screwdriver. It really is quite easy once you do it the first time. I was afraid I'd break it because it feels so light and delicate but the gloves gave me just enough grip.

The video says you can just twist it open, the top part, to get to the battery compartment. It will not move.
