I don't know. It seems like the other glands on the sides of my neck and also above my collar bone are swollen. However, my body temperature is back up, and I'm handling the cold weather so much better than before the meds adjustment. My energy level seems back up, and I lost 1/2 pound. The strange thing is that I've never had swollen glands this bad in my life. I'm getting nosebleeds and having aching in my knee joints, but maybe that just goes with the flu thing and not being a spring chicken any more. I'm back on the meal plan and might start up the exercise gently today. You know how you start feeling like jello if you haven't been able to get to it for awhile. I will start with stretching and strength.

Thank you so much. I am doing a lot better. The only thing left is a swelling in my throat and aching in my knee joints. I am so relieved to be functioning again. I went back on my meal plan today, which really helps everything. I haven't been back on the treadmill again, but there is hope for that too.

I have been put on many and had awful results with all of them, no matter what I did. Wellbutrin is the Only anti depressant that did not eventually back fire on me, making me a serious mess and suicidle.I am 47, they first tried when I was 17. So you can guess I've been through many. If wellbutron can work for you, stick with it.

I've still got the miserable flu. Had it for 9 days now. I caught it from my husband. He had it a long time too. It is one of those nasty, hanging on kind. He's doing better now, so that gives me hope. Every day I wake up saying, "This has got to be the end of it." I am glad my thyroid meds got re-adjusted. It seems like 6 months is a long time to wait when you feel "off", but it is expensive.

Finally, I was able to have a TSH level drawn. My test result was 25, and my synthroid has been raised to 88 mg. The cytomel has not been changed, so I assume that I am to keep taking the usual dosage. Sometimes I wonder if my thyroid is burning up faster than my medication can adapt within 6 months. I have caught a nasty version of the flu. This is my 8th day of it. Glands in my throat feel swollen, and I've been having a fever. It's hard to breathe, I can't exercise, and I feel like a depressed mess. Tomorrow has got to be brighter.

Purr, thanks for the response. Yep. the "drill" - to answer your question, I take the levo with 16 oz of water in the AM. I eat 40 minutes to an hour after. The doc says for my levels, that is ok. What I eat for breakfast doesn't interfere with absorption. I take all vitamins, iron supplements, etc. at night well after the 4 hr. point and I don't drink caffeine anymore (hadn't in a long while).

So let's see what happens on the levothyroxine /liothyronine combo. I'll keep you all posted.

Best wishes Inner. If that doesn't work try a different med and that may do the trick for you. Do you take it with a full glass of water, on an empty stomach, (no food for an hour after taking), 4 hrs away from caffiene, iron, fiber, etc? That helps also. Some of us do better on certain meds and others of us do well on something else entirely.

I've been on levothyroxine .125mcg for over 5 years and I'm still experiencing most the symptoms (crispy hair and nails, hair loss, cold hands/feet, fogginess, sleep disorders, etc). I changed doctors and during this last week's visit, we talked about slightly lowering the levo (T4) and adding the generic version of Cytomel (T3). Blood was let, tests were run, and we'll see if indeed this is going to work....

I'm on 75 mcg of Levothyroxin a day. I have Hashimoto's Disease. I've been off the meds for this since Jan 18. I'm scheduled for a Uptake Scan Feb 24th and had to be off them for 5 weeks to clear them out of my system. I've always taken my thyroid pill in the morning along with my other pills. But after reading here I'm going to try to taking them apart from the others. I've noticed that I'm feeling a bit more tried and rundown but I'm still losing a little bit of weight each week. There is lots of good info here.

Hi I am new-but am a hypothyroid sufferer...I hadn't realized that I am feeling kind of depressed. My doc also had to put me on synthroid, but my endo said he put me on too low a dose. I have no idea which antidepressants can help bc many cause weight gain. I am trying wellbutrin. Anyone know of others?

When I was in my 40's my thyroid went nuts, probably how I gained all this weight.I was on meds for years and then one day the doctor decided I didn't need it anymore.I don't think he is right. I can't lose weight to save my soul and I hardly ever eat the daily calories I'm suppose to.I mall-walk 3-4 times a week and my weight does not budge, so I do it because it keeps me limber and I feel good.Anybody know of anything over-the counter/health food store I can get?

I have been lucky enough to find Armour by calling around to the different pharmacies in my area. I would find one that had it and then would ask my doc to call it in. However, Liothryonine (the componded T3), has virtually disappeared too! I am on both Armour, 30 in the morning, and Liothyronine (twice a day). Several pharmacists explained that the shortage of Armour caused the shortage of Liothyronine when people switched their prescriptions. I have been without Liothryronine for 3 months and I have gained 20 pounds. ARGH!! I finally gave in and had my doctor call in my prescriptions to a pharmacy that only makes compounded medicines so that I could get all of my medications on time. I held back for so long because this pharmacy does not take insurance. Ah well, I picked them up on Friday and now I am praying that i can get the weight back off.

Curses to the FDA for making Armour reformulate. Grrrr.

Great! Thanks for the update! If anyone hears when it actually hits the pharmacies, can you shout out? I will then have my perscription changed back. I wonder if you can drop the 15 as quickly as I picked it up!?

copied from mary shomon's yahoo group....

Good news:

Yesterday, according to Dai Jinn, Chief Science Officer at RLC,

"I can definitely say that the product started shipping last week. As indicated, it still may take a week or so to reach all of our clients and then a bit more to ultimately reach down to the patient level."

So Nature-Throid 1 grain IS on its way to distributors and ultimately to pharmacies around the country.

Over the last year, I have been on 125 mcg of T4, then 137 mcg of T4, then 50 mcg of T3, and now 1.5 grains compounded natural dessicated thyroid. I started the NDT Christmas day. I have lost 2 pounds, have energy to exercise, and feel human again. My husband has noticed a difference over the last few days. No more just T4 or just T3 for me!

The compound is made right in the pharmacy and has the same strength as the commercial version. So far I haven't noticed any adverse reaction since I switched to it.

I finally ran into the shortage today (it was just a matter of time). So, I will patiently wait and pray for things to either speed up on Forrest Pharmaceutical's end or for God to heal me completely and my not needing it anymore.... either way, it's a waiting game.

Thank you for the feedback. This is very interesting since my doctor told me it was no longer available. I will keep an eye out for production to start up again. It is also interesting that there are pharmacies that develop compounds. I didn't realize they existed.

NM? Compounding means a special pharmacy where they custom tailor and make the meds themselves. Armour is not stopped being made....it's been a temporary shutdown. They have released it again in limited quantities as they get production back up so maybe you could look into going back on it. Check out www.armourthyroid.com

I was also on Armour. I was really disappointed when they stopped the production. I am now on Levothroxine and grew another 15 pounds in just a few months. I had the levels rechecked and the doc adjusted the dosage, but I haven't seen any shrinkage. What is the "compound" you are speaking of?

Hi,

I've been living with hypothyroidism for about 7 years. I was first on synthetic but found that I was not feeling any better until I was switched to Armour. I have been on that until recently when apparently the supply stopped, I had my doc prescribe me the compounded version in the meantime. Although I haven't felt any difference with the compound, it is more expensive since it is made right there in the pharmacy.

I had trouble getting the Armour Thyroid refilled a few times. My TSH and T3 levels dropped very low so my doc switched me to the Levothyroxine so she could have more control with the dose. Luckily, I did very well with the switch. Sorry to hear others were not as fortunate.

My doc said the reason for the shortage is that Armour Thyroid was not a classified drug. Now it is going to be classified and there is a great enough expense to that process that they are stopping production.

I will start my frustration with this issue with the next refill. The last time it was just a "let me check" delay.

I started on Synthroid, was switched to generic levothyroxine for no good reason and just switched back. On levothyroxine I was losing hair slowly for some years and am hoping to regrow it. I asked my doctor about Armour and she said it is not in production. I don't know if that means its out of production or what. What are the names of the other natural thyroid medications?

In my little town, I haven't had any problems getting armour. I go to a doctor in the big city and she said a lot of her patients are having problems finding it.

I just give my pharmacy a call 5 or 6 days in advance and they always have enough.

I found a compounding pharmacy in Rhode Island that mailed me a 3-month supply of compounded NDT meds - Bayviewrx.com.

I didn't mess with insurance at that point, simply had my MD/NP send in the prescription and called them up with my credit card number.

I've been switched to synthroid plus an enzyme. It is not going well. I am very sensitive to it. It seems I am always overmedicated or undermedicated and not within the range. Without health insurance, how in the world am I supposed to afford an endocrinologist?

I have found that seeing a Naturopath that I get better levels of thyroid hormones. I also take Bi-Identical Hormones. They are work together.

I am really concerned about the lack of Armour. I paid cash for a 90 day supply the last time I got some. I hate going to the drug store monthly.

Well...it's time for our Nature-throid to be refilled, and our insurance company won't cover our doctor dispensing it because he is not a licensed pharmacist. I called Medco, Walgreens, CVS and Wal-mart, none of them have Nature-throid, Armour, etc. in any strength. They also do not know when they will get any in. So, our insurance company has approved coverage to have our thyroid rx's compounded, and gave me the name of several pharmacies in our area that does compounding.
When I called the compounding pharmacy nearest to us, they were so nice, and also mentioned that if our physician wants the thyroid meds "tweaked" at all(such as a little more T-3 or less, etc.) they can do that to tailor our thyroid medicine to our own specific needs. We'll see how that goes.

Like Tami39's pharmacy, my doctor got an account with RLC, and now distibutes Nature-throid until this "shortage" or whatever is happening is over. His nurse said the doctor prefer's not to be a distributor of meds, but if it's the only way he can help his patients - he'll do it.
He also mention a chain of compounding pharmacies in Colorado called Pharmica that can handmake special order meds if needed.

My doctor is my good friend. She says the same thing. There is a pharmacy near Scotsdale, AZ that my doctor has been able to get some from while the pharmacies in my area (central Utah) get their act together. It's called Clark's Pharmacy 480-488-2007. I'll get it in the mail tomorrow, 90 days worth.

We will keep our fingers crossed for you Tami. Hope all goes well.

The pharmacy that worked so hard for me and got results was K-Mart in Springfield OH.

Thanks so much Raney. My local pharmacy said they couldn't get Nature-throid. I called RLC directly and asked for a local distributor. Lo and behold, my compounding pharmacy was on their very short list. The compounding pharmacy had to set up an account with RLC directly to ensure its availability. Keeping my fingers crossed that they'll be able to get it continuously.

Good job, Raney!

Peeps, Raney has put together the steps you need to follow,in order to get Naturethyroid or Westhroid if you have been denied!

YES, this will require work on your part. But its worth pushing for something you need.

Let's make this thread a record of our experiences... pharmacies where we have had success and those where we have not. I'm talking names and towns here. We will be able to see which pharmacy chains are cooperative and which ones are not... and take our business there accordingly.

Vote with you pocketbook, peeps!

I know many of you are experiencing frustration trying to get your dessicated thyroid perscription filled. You may being told from your pharmacy that it will be on back order for 90 days or that you can not get it at all. I was told this same thing a week ago by my pharmacy. I went to the about.com web-site and there is a direct phone line to RLC Labs to call 877-797-7997; so I printed off the information and took it to my pharmacy. They called they were able to set up a direct account with RLC Labs instead of going through their supplier. I just received a call from my pharmacy that my thyroid meds are in and I told them to give me a 60 day supply, they ordered 400 all together to make sure I will have enough for a year. If you are going thru your insurance company you might want to skip that because my insurance company would not allow me get more than a 30 day supply; so pay out of pocket if necessary. thyroid.about.com/b/2009/08/18/rlc-s
