Carol, it may be worth some money.

Amy, hubby and I were talking about that last week. Today's technology would scare our great grand parents out of their wits.

I don't remember that at all. We did take polaroid pictures, but technically not a toy. Isn't it amazing how far cameras have come?

Mother played Canasta too. I think I did for a period of time but have forgotten it now. Grandma loved Royal Rummy. We played it when she came for a visit, but I have forgotten that one too. I might have to relearn some of these games. Cribbage was yet another popular game at our house.

I remember my mom playing Canasta with the neighbors when I was young (before she started working full time). I never learned it then but when I started dating my husband, we used to play it with his mom, sisters and one of his brothers. That brother was deadly. He'd hold everything in his hands and you'd think you were safe and then suddenly, he'd lay everything down and go out on us. Doubt I could play it anymore.

The first time I saw that game was while we were visiting cousins in Michigan. The boys were playing it but I really admired the game. My brother got his own way later. I thought it was a fun game. I did get Perfection and Operation when they came out. I enjoyed both of those too.

When I was 6 I got Mouse Trap for Christmas. Mom and I were staying with my grandparent's cause dad was stationed at a remote radar site for a year. His brother was still living at home and played with me. Uncle Charles said it must have been invented by a looney person cause no normal person could think up such things.

I do remember trolls, but wasn't into them. Towee, the clothes I fashioned for my Barbie were similar to your description, however I really didn't advance further. Mother did not sew and by the time there was a little sewing in home ec, I was done playing with dolls.

My Ginny doll is how I got into sewing. One day I went up to the attic with some solid red material, a needle and thread (I learned to sew a seam in Brownies) and black snaps and made a "dress" for Ginny. I cut a square and two rectangles for the bodice and a circle for the skirt. I used a backstitch to sew the seams. When Mom saw what I had done, she decided it was time for lessons on the sewing machine.

Those robots were not at our house. I have a very cute movie clip of my older brother getting boxing gloves for Christmas one year. He was boxing one of those big blow-up type clowns that were weighted in the bottom so that when they were hit, they would spring back up. Brother was about 5 or 6 at the time.

My parents had a collection of clackers in their stuff. I did like playing with them but chose not to keep them. If you were a little too aggressive with the one Julie has pictured below, the wheel comes flying off--the reason we chose not to keep them. It seemed like they held some type of magic the way they worked.

I don't remember buying any different heads for Barbie, but the heads do come off very easy so I can definitely see how it could be done. Uncle had some preprinted panels that made better looking dresses for Barbie than I could ever make. I still have one uncut panel from his stuff. I envied the girl across the street whose mother made her doll wonderful fancy clothes....probably a reason why I made my cousin's daughters clothes for their American Girl dolls.

I really enjoyed my large chalk boards.

Ken and those other dolls (some of them more generic versions) are probably floating around here in a box. I made very crude clothes for some of them out of my uncles fabric samples as he was a fabric salesman and my aunt occasionally gave me some of the samples to play with. I guess I always loved fabric!

I have my original Barbie. She is the brunette bubble cut model. I always envied the blonde ponytail one, but mother wanted me to have one that looked more motherly. I was about 5 or 6 when they first came out. I never combed her hair and she is in great condition.

I remember the Betsy McCall paper dolls. I remember Barbie, also, although I was a bit too old for her when she came out. My sister hated her because my sister's name is Barbara. ( She didn't like the Beach Boys song "Barbara Ann" either).
My favorite toy was a tea set that my grandmother kept at her house. We used to have great fun with that when we went to visit.

Big furniture or appliance boxes were favorites with us. They had a life cycle of their own. First used as a whole box and then when that started splitting, the box was officially cut at the seam so it could be opened and used as walls of houses etc. The last step was to use large pieces or even a large box to get into and roll down a hill.

We used the big boxes with my girls. One year 7Up had the "spot houses" on their displays at Christmas. Hubby worked Christmas Eve when they took the displays down. He asked if he could have one, and they gave it to him. Of all the toys they got, the spot house was the best one.

When I was very young my mom would get a large box from the local furniture store and put all my paper, scissors, glue etc. in it for me to play in. Better than any play pen. I also did it for my son when he was little.

I vaguely remember a toy iron--maybe I'm just imagining it or a friend had one. Mother hated ironing and she let me use a regular one at a fairly young age. She really didn't iron much and avoided buying clothes that required it. She did not iron sheets, socks, jeans, tees etc. that some people did iron.

I had pink toy appliances like a refrigerator, stove and sink that I used to set up and play house with. I also loved huge cardboard boxes that could give the house a shape. We also covered a picnic table with blankets to make a house.

I remember colorforms too, but get very few sets of them. I did enjoy them.

Carol--I loved coloring books too and still occasionally color a picture with pencils . I still love puzzles too and mostly do one in the winter. Once they are well set up, I spend hours at a time working on them too.

Yes! I remember Betsy McCall paper dolls. Except my mom would only let me have them after she read the magazine. Then we both would forget about them, so I didn't have many of them.

I can see where those things would be right up your alley Carol!

I do remember some Betsy McCall paper dolls. We didn't get magazines regularly and the paper dolls were not my thing. Mom loved paper dolls growing up. They had some vintage ones in estate stuff, but they were not mom's. The paper dolls sold pretty well in an online auction.

Once I learned to read, I preferred to get "lost" in the stories in books...(much to my siblings dismay). -- I really didn't like many toys. It was just "okay" to play w/ legos & lincoln logs.
