Paper around the house is my nemesis. I was doing really well with the "Touch it once rule" for a while, but I lost the bubble and now have a mess in my office. I desperately need to clean that out. My biggest issue is that things get moved from the kitchen to clear out the clutter, half of it gets thrown away and half of it gets moved to my office to be filed or put away. And this summer the second half of that didn't happen. So I have stacks. And dust. It's like a constant battle.

Now that the weather has turned maybe DH and I can take a weekend and declutter rather than work outside.

Carol - As far as artwork for the walls, I'm a huge fan of going to local craft festivals and supporting the artists. We have art from local photographers from the different places that we've lived all over the house. I also have some framed lithograph pages from Harper's Weekly from the late 1800's framed and hung in a bedroom. But supporting local artists is my favorite way to get wall art.

Marcy, things always seem to get worse before they get better. I also think all the things on the bottom of the piles have had all the oxygen pushed out of them and when the weight is removed they fluff up.

I know how that works. I'll start cleaning something out and end up with a huge mess from "sorting". I am working at using up little dabs of this and that. These things seem to collect in the bathroom. Kind of like scraps. They seem to multiply when you're not looking!

Two of the new bathroom drawers are still empty. Will leave them that way for a while. While sorting yesterday I isolated a stack of 2 1/2 " squares and took them immediately to the box that holds them. I should just start sewing them together, lights and darks an make a trip around the world. cArol

Our new vanity cabinet has 8 drawers and a large space underneath the sink. Hubby said I can have 6 of the drawers! HOpe I dont need that many but I need to clean something out and throw out what I do have. Not until its all done. Carol

How about tips to organize the home? My decorator genes are kicking in. I need to figure out what artwork to hang on my new walls. I moved an old dry sink that belonged to MIL into the bathroom next to the toilet. It is perfect in there next to the toilet to hold toilet paper, etc. Can't wait to get in there and fill up the drawers, after throwing things out of course. Carol

Great ideas for patterns AMy! I have a book case that has 9 cubby holes in it. Got it from Lowes and I think it was a closet organizer of some kind. At any rate, it holds patterns and a variety of fat quarters, charm packs and smaller pieces. I should purge my patterns as some will never get made. Carol

Carol--depending on how many patterns you have, you could consider shoe boxes to store them. Label the boxes: favorite patterns already made; future great patterns to make; and possible patterns to make. If the future great gets to full, move some to possible--possible gets to full it is time to purge or start a new box of possible ones (consider how many of these you want to start). If you only have a box to look through, it is a manageable quantity. I have downloaded patterns on the computer until I actually start making them. I do have binders of ones from the past and will purge those down in the future as my tastes have changed and there is so much more available on the internet now!

While I was quilting on Platypus yesterday, I totally need to do a deep clean in that area. I think I am going to sew the binding on the Halloween quilt and take it with me on my trip to Virginia next week. Give me something to work on in the hotel. I also have some other handsewing I could take. Carol

I don't have the 5 inch square, but I do have the 2.5 inch one. It is so easy to cut 5 inch squares I didn't see the need to spend the money on it.

Sounds like you are getting lots accomplished. I would label folders then file patterns as I found them. I need to clean out my file cabinet and get rid of old tax records.

Do you have the accuquilt dies for those squares Bev? Bonnie suggests those sizes plus 2" and 1.5" strips. Your room looks fab. I did clean up a corner of my room the other day. I even put some printed off patterns into labeled folders and put them in the file cabinet. There is much more to do and I need to remember where they are. Carol

Came home with 3 little fridge bins from church thursday. One has 4 tiny spaces just perfect to hold 1.5" squares and some other sections. The other two hold strips, one perfect for 2" squares and the other is fat quarter size. Free and wonderful. They were going to throw them out. I'm thinking that the one with the small spaces must be a currency holder. Four spaces for coins and then rest hold the bills. Its not big. I ought to write up a workshop about storage containers. I have this drawered bin that sits under my sewing table. I have one drawer in my table and space under it. That drawered bin holds some junk that will never be used, like grommets from Joanns. One of those drawers would make a perfect spot for those tiny triangles. Thanks for the idea Bev. It really pays to go through your stuff occasionally. CArol

Here are some of my attempts at organization.

My fabric is folded on comic book boards and mostly by color. The narrow shelf in the middle has pre-cuts.

Under my ironing table I have two 3 drawer bins facing each side. This side has squares and strips, the other has UFOs, WIPs, and fabric pulled for projects.

Under the long arm I have three 3 drawer bins and a trunk. Also have some backs and non-quilting fabrics stacked on top.

I have my strings in color coded gift bags, and the AccuQuilt stored in a small built in bookcase.

I have my most used rulers in a holder on the sewing table, and some drawers with thread, markers, rotary cutters, rulers not regularly used and such.

My patterns, books, and magazines are on a bookcase in the corner behind my sewing table. That is my grandmother's quilt frame propped on the side.

Went to Joann's and got 5 storage boxes with lids that fit perfectly in my cubbholes and 4 smaller boxes with lids that can hold 2 1/2" squares and other sizes. All cost me $32.49 with discounts! Already filled two of the larger boxes with the 1930's fabrics. I've decided to go through each of the 9 cubbies on one side and purge shelf by shelf. That is a start.
And F8, clear shoe boxes are a good idea as well! Anything clear so you can see what's inside. On to more organizing but I was able to clear out all those mailers holding the 1930's fabrics down into two boxes. Carol

I've decided we need to start a permanent thread for this. Each month we can post a new tip to work on for the month. I dont know if this is where this needs to be but I want to make it permanent. We all complain about organizing and there are some great blogging ideas out there to share. I'm making this month #1..

August storage ideas: What are your favorite storage containers? Do you have boxes and bins of all sorts, fabric bags that you have made? or organized same size containers. Pics are appreciated. I'm starting with storage containers because I'm going to Joann's today for 20% off seniors purchases. Remember back in March I bought storage containers from the Container store? They are in use and fill my shelves and all color coordinated. Overflowing but color coordinated. My cutting table has 9 cubby holes on each side. Filled with stuff. My goal is to get containers for them or just plain organize them.
What are your ideas?
