Thank you! He is doing a lot better today. We have both had some naps. I had kitty friends to help me sleep as well. Maybe we will get to some of the Bright Week services. We can hope! Lots of prayers uttered in the ER and in the hours since.

Needing prayers for Charles again, and also for me. He spent a horrendous night in the ER. He was having problems breathing again, and the pain in his legs, feet, and ribs was overwhelming. His glucose was very high, so the ER doctor gave him a lot of fluid. That may result in his going back sometime soon with congestive heart failure. We'll see.

Anyway, his state of mind was very bad this time. Have never seen him so close to "the end of his rope." My own mood is worse than usual, too. This is a spiritual battle as well as a physical one. And we were both too ill and exhausted to participate in Paschal festivities at church. That has not helped. Please pray for us!

Kathleen

I've been fighting a migraine-like headache for two days, so now I guess I could use some more prayers. I'm hoping I've got it under control now. Used a lot of ice packs and took some naps in the dark today. I'm sure the stress and exhaustion of the last week and a half are a part of the cause.

Thank you for prayers!

Had to call an ambulance Wednesday, but the hospital did not keep him. They did not give him his "water pills" while he was in the hospital, so now he is retaining a lot of fluid. He was getting short of breath, which can be a sign that his congestive heart failure is kicking in. But while he was in the ER, his medicine that he had taken at home finally kicked in. Some of the fluid has come off. We hope it continues. He sees the podiatrist on Friday. I hope the surgical wound is healing well!

Yeah, the jokes are rolling in! He loves it. Of course it is scary to start having body parts whacked off, but humor makes it easier to deal with it.

Thank you for prayers!

Kathleen - Laughter is the best medicine! Sounds like both you and Charles have a great attitude. Charles reminds me of how upbeat my dad was when he went through his amputations. God bless you and Charles. Prayers for both of you.

Thank you so much, ladies. That is so nice! I don't do well with phones except with my daughters and my younger sister. The writing helps me sort things out better most of the time. I really appreciate the offer. There may come a time when I will take you up on it.

Well, Charles had his surgery on Monday. The podiatrist did it, and she only took the one toe. The vascular doctors would have taken half his foot, and the podiatrist did not feel that was necessary at this point. That day may come, but why hurry it along?

Charles was doing so well that they let him come home Tuesday evening. He has maintained a great attitude throughout the whole process. While he was in the ER, he told the doctors and nurses that he didn't want to lose that toe because then he would not be able to count to 20 any more. Now he says that he is going to change his name to "Charlie Nine-Toes," and he will become either a mobster or an Indian chief. Someone offered to call a toe truck for him, and he thought that was pretty hilarious. Someone else told him not to go into the canning business because nobody will buy toe jam.
emoticon

Anyway, the cats and I are happy and relieved to have him back home. I did not go on Spark much Monday or Tuesday because of exhaustion and also because I have had a minor virus. Stress often seems to make me ill. I am feeling a lot better now.

Thank you for the prayers and candles!

Kathleen

Kathleen, Be assured the prayers continue for both of you. I lit a candle for you today at Liturgy. It is good that you have a doctor you trust. That means so much. I am sure you are getting weary. Do you have a support system? Any family in the area? Please know we are here for you. Don't hesitate to ask if there is anything I can do. I will be happy to speak with you by phone if you would like. You can spark mail me your phone number and I can do the same. Hugs, love, blessings, and prayers for you and Charles.

Not kind, so much as just wanting lots of people praying for us!

The vascular doctors were around again today and told Charles they may need to take more than just the one toe. It is all quite confusing, since the one vascular doctor said the podiatrist should do the surgery. They will be calling the podiatrist early in the morning. I hope she can do it. We trust her!

Still no real idea when this will actually happen. Please keep up the prayers. Thanks!

Forgot to mention . . . I am really getting weary. It's taking a toll. Trying to leave it in God's hands, but it is hard.

Still no surgery. Now it will be Monday or maybe even Tuesday. The doctors are in a "tinkling" contest about who should do it!?! Aaaaargh! They are keeping Charles pumped full of strong antibiotics to keep the infection from spreading.

Everyone who visits or works with him has to wear a gown and gloves because of the infection. When our priest came to visit, he looked really funny with that yellow gown on over his long black robe! Hospitals are full of MRSA and similar infections these days, and someone like Charles is very vulnerable because of his many medical issues and frequent hospitalizations. So now he has one of those nasty infections. We are really hoping that once that toe is gone, he will have complete healing in that foot. Just have to get the infection out of his system, and that is not easy.

Thank you so much for your prayers!

God bless Charles. Sounds like he has an amazing attitude. I smile and cry at the same time, thinking about him and you. I am sure the nurses love Charles. He sounds like quite a guy. Our (my son's and my) prayers for both of you continue. Take care of yourself and don't stress too much about the "naughties" for now. You already have enough on your mind. I do agree however that eating the healthy food and getting in your exercise is a great way to cope with all you are facing.

Thank you for prayers, love, and hugs! Still do not know when the surgery will be. I am leaving for hospital in a few minutes. Charles is one of those people who does not like anyone hanging around at the hospital for hours and hours, not even me!

I am trying to exercise and eat healthy food. I think that is helping me stay calmer. Eating a few "naughties," but I do that all the time, anyway.

Charles has been joking with the nurses and doctors. He tells them that he hates losing that toe because now he will not be able to count to twenty! He is always a favorite with the nurses there. I wonder why?

Had to take my hubby Charles to the ER last night. When he took his compression stocking off and cleaned his bad toe last night, there was a black area on the end of the toe. I talked him into going to the ER without delay, and it looked worse every hour while we were in ER. They admitted him, and he is being prepared for surgery later today to remove the toe.

I knew the day would come when he would start losing extremities. It is unlikely to stop with the toe. It is hard to get such infections out of the system once they are there, especially for diabetics. It will further compromise his mobility, which really upsets him. I don't blame him!

Please pray for him, and also for me. Thank you!
