I think that a lot of the foods that are considered to be causing the heart problems aren't balanced properly. While dogs are herbivores somewhat, they lean more toward the carnivore side, so should be eating a higher amount of meat than vegetables and I think that is where the problems are lying. I think that is why the Halo foods were being investigated.

Regarding the grain-free, I have been told that it wasn't really research that came up with the heart problems caused by it, but a number of dogs that were on grain-free that were reported to have the problem. I wonder if they are comparing the number of dogs that are on grain-based or foods with grain that have it now. I know that now they have said in one article that they are getting it without the grain-free foods.

I don't know anything about Halo, have never heard of it. Since we have labrador retrievers that we run in hunt test competitions, we feed our dogs Eukanuba Performance dog food and we order it from Chewy.com which is delivered to our home.

Sorry Darlene, I don't know anything about Halo - have heard of it, but never looked into the brand.

From what I've read about this whole grain free issue, it sounds like even the "experts" can't agree whether or not it is safe or truly risky to feed to the dogs. I think lots of folks were having a kind of "knee jerk" type reaction to all the hype about it, but then I'm not one of the experts! emoticon emoticon

Dogs eat plats and veggies, I'm told in the wild they eat the stomach first when they eat grazing animals. The thing is that you need to balance the food out, I have heard of Halo, but never used it, I do know I'm hearing more and more foods that aren't balanced.

Does anyone here feed Halo or know anyone who does. I had always heard it was a good food, but was reading up information on it, particularly after the grain-free thing, and find that it has an awfully lot of things like peas, chick peas, and other vegetable ingredients. I got 4 small bags from the Pet Food Pantry last time, but looking at it, the ingredients and the information I read on it, I am not sure I want to feed it. Articles on the grain-free have said that it is mainly that they haven't got the amount of meat protein they need because they are using more plant protein that doesn't have the taurine that the meat provides.
