I walked the liberty lake loop once when I was in much better shape than I am now and it kicked my butt...bravo to those of you who are doing it! I like Dishman hills and I'm also fond of the 3 mile loop at Mineral Ridge (end of lake CDA, Wolf Lodge exit). That's a good one to do in Dec/Jan to see the bald eagles. They discourage dogs at that time though so I usually only do it in the summer. Gotta hike with the pooches! I also found a good trail out at fish lake once - and then never went back! Gotta do that again soon....

Sometimes I wonder..."Why is that frisbee getting bigger?"...and then it hits me....

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid. - Albert Einstein

If I am walking in at least 10 minute increments I count them as the 30 minute walking. Hope this helps!

I have thought about volunteering, but our plate is kind of full right now.

Does walking around at events count as "exercise"? I volunteered today at Ironman and walked around the park twice, and tomorrow I'm volunteering at Hoopfest and figure I'll get a ton of walking in since I'll be taking the bus, arriving early, and wandering downtown and looking at shops and the sights before I have to report to my station. It's gotta count for something :)

That said, I'm starting a walking routine now (today). Unfortunately I'm more out of shape than ever, and this evening I went for a walk but 15 minutes is about all I can handle so far. My legs cramped up so badly I ended up limping the last little bit. Which makes no sense as I walked a few times with a friend the last few weeks and didn't cramp up at all.

I'm in the valley, and will be walking (God willing) in the mornings... figure 6:30 or 7am before work. Take advantage of the fresh morning air and sunshine. (It also reminds me of younger days when I was a YMCA Summer Day Camp volunteer). Are there any other early birds out there that might want to join me? Hopefully it will only take a little while before I'm able to go longer distances.

My fiance and I are still making it to Bear Lake at least every other day with our dogs and having a doggie day! We make 1 lap (1.4 miles), throw the ball for the dogs for about 15 minutes, then make another loop before going back to the car. Almost 3 miles total! emoticon

Any one in the area interested in doing some 4-10 mi hikes keeping a 3+mi/hr average up give me an e mail and we can see what we can coordinate.

Pinkgranny, i'm glad I wasn't off my rocker, I always felt that way too. If they don't feel right, don't buy them no matter who tells you otherwise. I just need to listen to myself (and trust my own instincts) more often.

I wear them inside for a while and have no qualms about returning them. I have had too any 'mistakes' to put up with that. And something I have learned over time from some of the experts is that if you have to break them in, they are the wrong shoe. They should fit from the get-go.

I agree with what you are saying, but I had a bad experience with a "professional" place. I was measured and fitted with a pair of walking shoes, but they just didn't feel comfortable. The man who helped me told me that I need to wear them in. So, I left with a 100+ dollar pair of shoes that I don't wear anymore because every time I walk in them they hurt my feet. I tried them for a whole weeks worth of walking, and I was sure that they were worn in by then. I should have conveyed my feelings more, but I put my whole trust in them thinking that they knew so much more about it then I did. We just need to be aware.

It pays in the long run to get the fit and shoe that is right for your feet. I have had numerous mistakes and my feet have paid the price. When your feet hurt, you hurt all over. Your back can also go out of alignment if your gait is incorrect because of the shoe fit. The experts aren't trying to make an easy buck, they want repeat customers who tell their friends about them. Invest in yourself! You are truly worth it.

A little back story here...

I did bloomsday one year and 2 weeks later the nails on my big toes were turning black. I discovered (albeit the hard way) that my shoes were too short. I discovered this by visiting the shoe shop on Division across from Northtown and right down from Subway. I had them measure my feet and help me and discovered I was going a whole size too small. So, since then, I have gone with the bigger size and my feet love me!

I just spent the afternoon goofing off in Liberty Lake park. I can see why occult pizza likes it so much I cheated and parked at the horse trail head to skip the fee but you pay for it in altitude after two hours of geocaching I wasn't looking forward to the straight climb back up to my car.

I have not gone on the Centennial Trail near Riverside State Park. That sounds great. Right now I am more interested in level ground until I get used to riding my bike again and my bike legs get stronger.

I love Riverside State Park...the only problem with it is most of it is level ~chuckles~, but I do love walking route 25 all the way down the river into town and back to the camp sites ~smiles~

If you love hiking you should try Liberty Lake Loop...it's 8 miles of up and down hill with switchbacks ~smiles~

My whole schedule is screwed up now that the kids are out of school. My 16 year old is gone the whole summer practically which leaves me watching the 7 year old, so I have to go out jogging or walking at 5am ~chuckles~.

I was doing liberty lake a couple times a week, but that will have to go backburner for a bit ~cries~. The best time to hike is also the time I am stuck with kids ~chuckles~

I just went out to riverside park today around mile 34 on the centennial trial wandered north and found a few side trails took off down the the "deep creek" trail which lead to an old dry creek bed almost started down the dry bed figured I should be able to scramble back to the river and refind the centennial trail then common sense and time over took me and just back tracked to the car. Went 4 miles in just over an hour. really enjoyed the views and weather.

I took a friend Friday...boy was he hurting by the end of it ~chuckles~. I told them it was tougher than walking down the street ~chuckles~.

I think I will plan on doing the LLL at least once a week. I jog about 30-45 minutes and walk another 2 hours uphill ~smiles~

Adam, I met a man named Steve from Sport Town at the Women's Show recently and he will order New Balance for you with no additional freight. He also told me many of the places over charge for their wider shoes. I bought EE shoes and he told me I could have gotten them for about $25 less plus no shipping. I am getting my next pair from him. I may check out hikers too. His number is 838-4232.

Hey Adam, you should keep track of your steps and see if you can "walk" to Alaska! As much walking as you do, I bet you could, or maybe already have!

It is good to try them out now like you are rather than when you are going to be far from home. The ankles need support too! Good luck with that gear.

Yeah, I have to ensure my boots are 4E's, which very few companies make ~sighs~. New Balance is the only one right now that does ~smiles~.

I went to REI yesterday and they had a medium backpack that I bought. It doesn't fit right, so will trade it in for this other one I found that seems to fit better ~smiles~.

I got my "Select Tech" weights yesterday, so will be pumping some new irons this morning!!! ~smiles~

Did Riverside for 2 hours yesterday, it was very nice there, albeit raining in the valley ~chuckles~. I did it with my day-pack and about 20 pounds ~smiles~.

I was using my New Balance Trail Runners, even with 20 pounds it seems like the ankles need a bit more support ~smiles~.

It is funny how they feel fine but when those feet get busy doing the job they are designed for they can take such an abuse. If it isn't the toes it can be the heel or the arch. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes a long time to show up. I got a bunion when I took up walking on my lunch hours only to find out the shoes I thought fit well did not suit my feet. My poor feet! Alas, they work so hard!

I had some bad shoes once. I thought they were the correct size and discovered they weren't. My big toe on both feet had the nail turn black, as if I had run into something. Come to find out, even tho they didn't feel like it, they were too short. When I went walking (think Bloomsday) they were running into the end of my shoe and constantly getting "pushed back", hence the bruise, I did not lose the nails, but it sure was touch and go for a long time, almost a year!

A wrongly fitted backpack can be a most painful experience. Add bad shoes with that and you won't be having any fun at all ~chuckles~.

Your progress is very good and it is also important that you are wearing the right shoes/boots and are getting good gear. Those things help with motivation. I wear New Balance too, as they have some that are good for my pronation and arch issues and I can get one to accomodate my wider forefoot. It sure makes a difference whether I will or won't walk!

Hahahaha that is so Spokanite! ~chuckles~. I hear that so much ~chuckles~.

It's too hot!!! It's too cold!!! Well this is Spokane ~chuckles~ we have two seasons; Winter and August ~grins~. 2 months of scream hot weather, 1 month of perfect weather and 9 months of cold ~grins~.

We are the Siberia of America! ~chuckles~

I got shoulders today, I did 2 hours of cardio yesterday, but never had the time to make it to somewhere nice, so I think I'll spend an hour or two at Riverside State Park today ~smiles~.

I R getting some new hiking boots...the only brand that makes my width is New Balance. It is all I wear, I have their Trail Runners and will be getting my new backpacking boots this week ~smiles~.

We are planning a weekend trip either this weekend or next weekend to Priest River Loop. It is a relatively easy walk up to 15 miles, but it is low enough to where we don't have to worry about too much snow ~smiles~.

We have several weekend trips planned a couple week long trips on the Pacific Coast Trail and Seven Devils ~smiles~...it should be good fun!

I just got a new Osprey Multi-Day pack from REI, and I got a Big Agnus (+15) sleeping bag with the pad slip on the bottom so you don't roll off your pad ~smiles~.

I am so psyched to get this summer going.

And yes it was such a beautiful day I got a tan ~chuckles~. A farmers tan from hanging my arm out the window ~grins~.

Next year I'll be completely ripped with no body fat and then I can take my shirt off when I am walking ~grins~.

I have 67 pounds left to go till I am at 200...267 is a far cry from the 400 pounds I use to be ~cheers~.

If anyone every wants to go on a day hike with me just send me an email sometimes, otherwise it's me and my dog ~chuckles~

Have a good day guys! ~smiles~

Today is great and I got out to work in the flower garden a bit. I love this weather! I used my sunscreen but didn't stay out too long because I don't want to burn. I'll go back out when the sun is further west.

It is good to get new shoes. Now and then I do get fitted for them though because although my feet don't grow like a child's do, they still change enough to make a differnce. Enjoy the weather!

All this hiking talk is really inspiring! I might have to upgrade my shoes as my old hiking boots are really falling apart. Thank goodness the weather is finally cooperating - we'll be complaining when it gets too hot, though!

It sounds as though you are staying right on track. A little bit of reward is not a bad thing, as long as you dont overdo it! Have fun walking!

Yeah it's been crazy town around her lately ~chuckles~, but it's starting to mellow out. I am filling out some nutrition stuff, then I'll lift some weights, then go walking at Riverside or 7 mile today ~smiles~.

Adam, I have heard great things about bowflex. Kudos to you for taking a positive approach.

I checked your page and don't see any pics as yet? Were my instructions helpful, or have you had no time as yet? Let me know if I can be of any help! Pam

Congratulations on recognizing the emotional eating. It gets us all, but it is how you recover and get back on your feet again that matters...and knowing that is part of the battle.

I have heard the Bowflex is a good system.

Thanks ~smiles~. I have been eating more lately, and I had fast food twice this week ~chuckles~. I have been celebrating and not at home, so basically it is an excuse, but I will be buckling down tomorrow ~smiles~.

Sometimes I just have to give myself a little freedom and once I undestand it's just emotions I can nip it in the bud ~smiles~. I have never gained more than a pound or two.

I just got some Bowflex Select tech weights to go with my bowflex revolution ~smiles~. I can't wait for them to get here ~drools~.

Yeah the blow-down was terrible ~chuckles~.

I just went to REI today and spent 979 bucks on some new backpacking gear ~smiles~.

Got an Osprey Multi-day backpack, Big Agnus slipping bag and a REI sheer full open tent ~smiles~. A hiker pro water filtration system, pads, footprints, etc.

I might go camp out overnight at the cabin at Lake Liberty next weekend :) work in my New Balance hiking boots ~smiles~.

Time to hand any old gear down the boy! ~grins~

The Liberty Lake trail is good. I took a one-day adventure course there and the prof. said she usually has a longer course in winter where they learn survival in snow etc...it is a good trail with challenges. I bet there was a lot of debris from the winter we had!!

Yeah, I went 2 years ago, but I weighed a whopping 400 pounds, was terminally ill with 3 diseases and on close to 20 meds, so I could only do the easy stuff like whale watching, train rides, etc. ~smiles~. I ate like a pig and still lost 5 pounds because I was always moving ~smiles~.

I intend on doing some glacial hiking and kayaking this time ~grins~. I have the endurance for it now ~smiles~. I should find a rower and practice some rowing movements ~smiles~.

Yeah I saw Mendenhall last time...we are going to Hubbard this time to cruise along the ocean fjord ~smiles~

It is nice outside right now...I am going to buy new backpacking gearz!!! Well the big stuff anyways...backpack, tent and sleeping bag ~smiles~.

Yeah where I post those? :) One of my avatar pics is from the cruise we went on 2 years ago ~smiles~. I have tons of pics from that cruise.

Well have a nice day and let us know how the hike went ~winks~

Adam, I went on an Alaskan cruise 6 yrs ago with mom, aunt and daughter. If you've never gone, you'll love it. What cruise line are you going on? We hit Juneau, Ketchikan (?) and another coastal town. We went in September. Saw icebergs calving, but just seeing the icebergs was cool. Although, Titanic came to mind! LOL!! Saw the Mendenhall glacier too. Got soem real gorgeous pics, but not digital. Make sure you post some of your pics! I would love to see them!

On another note, going out to 4 lakes area of Cheney today and staying till Sunday. Going hiking and fishing. Weather is supposed to be good, so as soon as school lets out...off we go!

Yeah, I wish the I had the disposable cash...that would be a dream flight for me ~smiles~.

I did the Liberty Lake Loop Tuesday...did the whole loop in 3 hours!!! ~smiles~

I jogged down hill and walked up the switchbacks. There was a ton of blow down from last winter, so I was climbing over, under and around big pines. I took some pictures of the waterfall. It was beautiful.

I am thinking of taking my daughter there for an overnight backpacking trip ~smiles~. She is 7 so a 3-4 mile walk will be good for her ~smiles~.

Going out and buying a new backpack, tent and sleeping bag today, gearing up for Sullivan Loop here at the end of June. I'm going to be busy.

I am going on an Alaskan Cruise Ship with the wife June 28th, then have a whole summer filled up with weekend and week long backpack trips ~smiles~.

It is nice to see those Flying Fortress planes isn't it. They were offering rides for $430.00. A little high for now but that would be fun.

I love hiking!!! Getting ready to go do some here in a bit ~Smiles~

I live near the 8th street entrance to Dishman-Mica hills, but I also love Riverside State Park, and jogging the Centennial Trail. Mt. Spokane is still a icy ~chuckles~, but by next month it will be nice! ~smiles~

I have the State Line and Idaho a few miles away...I have a Geo as my putt putt car! It gets like 60 miles to the gallon and my dog and I fit in it just fine ~smiles~.

I was Hiking the other day and saw a low flying B-17 bomber from WWll, once last fall I saw a P-47 Thunderbolt ~smiles~. We have a group of yellow Biplanes that practice manuervers out here too ~smiles~.

I see magpies, coyotes, rabbits, chipmunks, lizards, snakes (very rare), storks, herons, trout, deer, moose, bear, cougars...there is a nice little flat walking route out by Waikkiki Rd.

I love hiking in Spokane :) If anyone ever wants to make a day out of it let me know ~smiles~.
