Diabetes is a complicated disease. We all know it is all about the sugar but we are often affected differently just because our bodies are different.

Our blood sugars can be very erratic, I am a type 2 not insulin dependant at all so I only know my own journey here.
I do know once I lost weight and exercise a lot now, my blood sugar A1c has gone from 8.8 to 5.6. Now i feel I am healthier even though I have not lost weight in many months. My journey now is all about my healthier lifestyle. I hope I will lose a few pounds more so i will be over weight not obese. I will not give up the exercise or tracking, I know that, and support from this site will help me accomplish my goals. HUGS Congrats on the weigh loss. Exercise really helps with blood sugar control too. Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

ALASKASKY, you are right we all need support and very often we need some motivation from others. Eventually you will find supporting others will often lead to self motivation. You get so busy telling them what they can do that suddenly you realise you can do it too.
With just a little help from your friends. Go look for the support and motivation and act on it. You and your health are worth it. Pat in Maine.

I have been a diabetic now for 13 years and I don't know a lot I thought I knew about diabetes. Like what role does insulin play in your body. I learned a lot and am still learning a lot from the articles and questions on this site. Thank you Sparkpeoople.

I've learned that I can overcome emotions if I really want to. On those days when I'm scheduled to exercise but don't feel like it, I've learned to give myself a minute, get on SparkPeople for motivation and sure enough those emotions start to fade. I start looking forward to challenging myself and completing what I started.

This is one of those mornings, but here I goooooooo!

I don't often do juices, to many hidden sugars.
I keep my fruits down to 2, and eat more veggies.
Eating more veggies makes a huge difference.

PEBBLESGMC. That is exactly what I found. I often exercised in the evening and tracking blood sugar I found that after evening exercises I was able to have my night time snack and still have a BS reading around 100 or less in the morning.

I have the Dawn Effect. If I do not have a small evening snack that happens to me.

You might know that is when your blood sugar rises around 3am so if you are an early riser as I am it shows an elevated FBS. For me the combination of exercise and snack helps to keep my Blood sugar more stable

We all have to take notice how food or exercise or even food AND exercise changes our blood sugar levels and eventually we will learn even more if we continue tracking it daily in a log book or on computer.
You have learned a very important lesson about your body here, well done! emoticon
You are doing emoticon Thank you for posting what surprised you. emoticon emoticon emoticon

emoticon Learning to see the patterns is so important to understanding your bodies needs. That is a great accomplishment and for any person with blood sugar issues that is exactly how you learn to take care of yourself.
You have to always be aware of what you eat and how much you exercise, awareness is the most important way to take care of your body. Thank you for telling me that. I think you will continue to have a healthy lifestyle and understand what you have to do to maintain it.

Knowledge is the key. Thanks emoticon emoticon emoticon Pat in Maine.

What I'm learning!

Probably the logging of food and my water. Man, I need to drink more water. I never realized how little I consume and when I get my 8 to 9 cups in I do feel better! This whole challenge has been a good thing for me. I'm very dedicated to my health and have always worked out but logging it allows you to see patterns, successes and where I can focus just a bit more!

Have a good day!

CHARLEDIA, You have learned a great deal. WELL DONE.
If you go to my spark page you will read I was told i would never be able to lose weigh. A Dr at a prestigious clinic told me to go home and learn to live with yourself. I told him to write in his notes to the GP who referred me there, tell him to get off my back about losing weight.

I have always been Athletic and in to nutrition so I just maintained at 200 pounds.
THEN Diabetes with menopause and then i tried really hard swimming 6 days a week, still no weight loss. Tried WW and went to Curves . The I found the Spark book. Then this old lady found a computer and is still learning a lot more but I have lost 36 pounds with Spark.
At this time I am on a plateau BUT I am happier finding so many wonderful friends who support me. I am healthier my A1c is 5.6 and now I take no medications. I am off my BP medication and still trying to get Triglycerides down. This Sunday will be me second 5K walk in Bangor Maine. I am 68 years young in October. I began Sparking less than 2 years ago and I am a different person. I still cannot type though.
You have a great attitude . Moderation, exercise and Tracking are the keys.
There is a Strength training video Free on the site its a seated 20 minute workout with resistance bands I hope you find it, I do it 3 times a week and i have tighter abs, smaller bust and butt and lots of muscle and energy. That is what Spark and I have done together. The goal is happy and healthy and the scale gets stuck at times. If the BS is good please stay with it. HUGS and thanks for commenting HUGS Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon ATTITUDE, emoticon emoticon emoticon

I was surprised to learn that I could lose weight. I had been trying to lose weight for years on my own. The best I was able to do was maintain. With the onset of diabetes, low thyroid, and menopause, I had even begun to gain weight again even with the methods I had used to maintain in the past. It was all very discouraging.

With the help of the Spark food tracker, I realize now how many calories I was consuming even when I thought I was watching what I was eating. The tracker has also helped me to see how I can control my BS better by monitoring my carb intake. The tracker makes it easy.

Having other people along for the ride keeps me motivated to exercise and make better food choices. Other people's comments and successes keep me encouraged. This was very surprising to me as I'm not a very social person. Knowing that others are involved in the struggle and making progress has been very helpful.

Hi Cathy at 67 almost 68 years young I know you can teach old folks new things.
I had an A1c of 8.8 and now i am at 5.6. I am not losing much weight right now but I am so much better looking and so much healthier. I am off meds and doing really well,
If I can do it so can you.
I never did much with strength training but i did buy resistance bands and I do the 20 minute workout sitting at my cpmputer and listening to coach Nicole telling me what to do.

It is free video right here on the site and i use it often I try to do it at least 3 times a week. Tracking , weighing and measuring your food is VERY important at first. You have to be sure you are not eating too much. HUGS Pat in Maine. Keep me posted. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I've learned that us old dogs can learn new tricks, get new attitudes, and change our ways of thinking. I'm a GI index and GI Loads user, and my diabetes has never been in better control. It doesn't make me regret the past as much as look forward to the future.

SUBRINA, try not to think you are on a DIET. that is an overused and abused word our diet actually means our food. It is equated with losing or gaining weight and that is a negative burden for usl
PLEASE, always think about your food as your healthy lifestyle maker, your exercise is keeping your body fit and your food is what keeps it healthy.

Hippocrates said "HEAL THYSELF WITH FOOD" and we often can. My diabetes and BP are under control that is almost as good as healed but I know if I mess up it will change for the worse. You can do it. It takes time. HUGS Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Thanks for your uplifting note. The one thing that I have not accomplished yet is trying to do the tracker when we go to a resturant. On Sundays after church we go and eat lunch well somewhere between teaching Sunday School and Children's Church I have to eat a snack if I don't I will wind up eatting too much when I do go and eat. I have figured out that you are right about the guesswork of trying to figure out how much that I can eat. But I am doing ok. I do not like going out to eat all that much because they always pile it on and I really don't like that. I like cooking at home more than I like going out. I like the strength training to with the bands. As a matter of fact I watch the video with Nicole and I also go to a strength training class Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at a gym. Keep up the good work too.

SUBRINA you have found secret number one. The amazing tracker. It absolutely keeps you honest with your food intake. But only if you weigh or measure well. I am on a plateau and now summer is over, I have not gained but I have kept BS and BP under control with no meds. My fall resolution is to take the time to do it absolutely correct. It would have cramped my style since we did eat meals out and I always track them. Often they had to be guesswork involved. Now I am out of restaurants and cooking all of our food as I normally do i am HOPING to go from Obese to over weight, Still just a few pounds to go. I think it is just three.

I am happy you have made and enjoy your connection to the tracker. Keep moving. I love strength training with resistance bands using coach Nicoles 20 minute video.

I have learned that you really do not know how many calories that you eat in one day unless you actually track what you are eatting. I have learned a great deal about that because of the spark diet. Which I think is so easy to follow.

Hi Pat,

I am surprised that I have not lost weight but gained. Not a lot, but I have, also, forearm and right thigh has increased half an inch in size.

I am doing everything according to instructions so guess numbers will drop, they have in the past.

Thank you for this board and thank you Glucerna. I was sooo scared when I found I had diabetes and had no knowledge of it all all. Now, I am much more informed.

This is the end of week 7 for me. I have only lost a few pounds on this challenge, but that is ok. I will begin again after week 8 and plan to stay on the challenge just to help keep me on the right track. I feel good and am at a lower weight now than in the past 25 years. As the pounds come off I am finding it easier to keep my blood sugar in control.

HOW TRUE THAT IS,
I have lost no appreciable weight since last OCTOBER but my A1c is at its lowest of 5.6 now.
I take no diabetes meds and stay well in control.
My blood pressure is great.
I had to buy smaller cothes 16 from size 20
I have lots of energy and usually walk 20 minute miles.
So much more sense than the scale. Thanks for posting that observation
Enjoy your journey to improved health and wellness Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon

We try to tell people exercise helps with blood sugar control but seeing it for yourself is fabulous. PLEASE try to impress this finding on as many people you can, It definitely works for most of us . The exercise and tracking your food and your blood sugar is the only way to go.
When you see your Dr tell him about spark too, my Dr had never heard about the site but now she knows she tells people to look into it.

I began with an A1c of 8.8 and now with Spark it is 5.6 my most recent blood work. I was put on Metformin and I was off it in just less than a year THANKS to using SPARK and reading the diabetes teams suggestions. We live the diabetic life and learn to control it.
emoticon I am so Happy you responded to my question. I am proud of you PLEASE keep up the good work Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon

I was amazed how much exercise decreased my blood sugar.

Even only 15-30 minutes 3-4 times per week was enough. I had struggled to get my blood sugar below 140 in the morning even on three different medications. Once I started exercising it came down quickly and has stayed below 130 for over 5 weeks now and I am off two of the medications now. It typically runs below 110.

I have also lost 20 lbs based on my weigh in this morning. I had lost some of the weight before joining Sparkpeople (about 8 lbs) but I was struggling and my blood sugar was still high. Once I started exercising it came down quickly and has stayed down.

I am also amazed at how much I can eat as long as it is the right things (like vegetables and fruit).

I found the best exercise to lower my Blood sugar is strength training. I am hooked on the video with coach Nicole using resistance bands. I actually bought a band with more resistence to up the work out. Good for you!
Exercise is definitely an inportant part of this healthy journey. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

HI there it looks like you have learned a lot ia a short while, well done. There is a lot to learn and since we are all different we have to learn it for our unique selves.
It sounds like you are determined and motivated to get to your healthy lifestyle.

I rarely weigh myself anymore. I just monitor how i feel, energised or slugguish, How I look and sleep and how my clothes fit.

The thing I have learned is using resistance bands for strength training gets easier the more you do it. I did start out with the weights and they were not as easy for me. I love the bands I sit and watch the computer and follow along. Gaining muscle does help you to lose the weight and it goes a little faster.

Spark is great giving us so many resources on a free site.
Thanks for the input I appreciate it. HUGS Pat in Maine. emoticon emoticon

I learned not to focus so much on a big goal, but to look to make small significant changes and that has little by little brought the big picture into focus. I've learned that just because I make 1 small slip up during the day, that doesn't mean I've messed up my whole day. I start from square 1 at the next meal/snack and make the rest of the day better, even throwing in an extra 10 or 15 minutes of exercise to make up for it. I learned that there is a lot I still have to learn and that as I learn more, I will constantly and gradually evolve into a healthier me. But MOST OF ALL, I have finally learned that I DID NOT gain 200 lbs overnight or in a year or in 2, so I WILL NOT lose them over night or in a year or in 2. I have been in the weight loss battle for 3+ years and I will continue until I have reached a healthier new me. I thank sparkpeople for being such a great resource for health information, for having such an excellent support system in place and for all of you who have helped me a long the way with your posts and comments, and blogs. God bless you all and good luck to us all on our continued journey together!

I have been surprised to learn that with the tools and support here on this site that it does not have to be as hard as I thought it would be. I know I will struggle and there will be tough intervals... but so far, this is the best program I have tried...(and I think I have tried them all). The people here make a big difference.. !

If at first you do not succeed.... Try, Try Again !!

emoticon DolphinLady: I have been away for a week in the hosital where they decided to change most of my diabetic meds. So as you are starting to come down, I'm making major changes and am just starting insulin. It gives me hope to have read your entry on the insulin and the decrease ! Thank you for sharing here what surprised you on the challenge.
I'm so glad that you have made it to week 7. Many people that finish either stick around in the after the 8 week discussion or start over again at week 1. Either way you will be able to give so much support to others that are just starting the challenge. I will be starting the challenge over starting June 19th so that I can get a good handle on the new meds and keep everything tracked here on the site! Hope you will stop down and cheer me on while I start the challenge over again ! Kay & The Pups
