Thank you I didn't think of contacting the coach for this team. I will and see what they say thank you again.

Hooch, as I understand it, the days you are not doing cardio you should be doing strength because muscle mass burns more calories per minute than fat. However, I would send your note to the coach/dietician for this group.

Hi I just started week 3. My blood-sugars have been regulating steadly. My doctor is very impressed that after 19 years of being a diabetic that I've lost good weight and have improved my levels greatly.
I was wondering though about how I go about trying to burn calories on the days my tracker tells me no cardio for recovery time purposes for the off days. Because it still tells me I have to burn so many calories that day. So if I'm not doing as much how do I adjust for that with food intake. It has me at 1350-1660 now cause I was burning way more a week on the full work-out days then I was suppose to. So it moved me up on food intake and calories. I am in the 10 min a day work-out challenge and I walk purposely for 2 to3 miles daily anyway, but that doesn't meet the burn-calories amounts for those off days. Does anyone know how I can.

The nutrition tracker has been helping me really see the foods I have been eating and helping me make better choices. Since re-starting Sparkpages I have been faithfully logging in everything as well as really focusing on the suggested nutrition.

What have you learned about your eating habits? That hormones have more control during certain times of the month, more than I realized. The more I know the better control I feel I have in the situation.

What have you been changing based on the feedback? Portion sizes and choices I make when I am out. I eat at home a lot more than I ever did before. Also, I track meals before I have them just to make sure.

How have your blood sugars been responding? Really well. I am pre-diabetic but, I know the difference complex carbs make versuses simple carbs.

the nutrition tracker has been helping you.

The nutrition tracker has been showing me that I eat more calories than I thought I did.

What have you learned about your eating habits?

I graze all evening, but I am learning to restrict it to one 9pm snack.

What have you been changing based on the feedback?

I have also been diagnosed as IBS so am trying to learn which foods trigger the pain. Unfortunately whole grains is very high on the list as is raw vegetables. I love salads but I just can't have them anymore and it is very frustrating.

How have your blood sugars been responding?

My morning blood sugars have been staying between 5.5 and 6.9 quite easily which is where my doctor wants them. But, I am on metformin.

Share your thoughts in this thread.

The Nutrition Tracker is my BEST friend! It never lies to me, and it does not judge me when I tell it the truth. Did you know that cotton candy in a .5 ounce serving is really a workable sweet tooth fix? Not many calories and will not derail your whole day's work!! But...did you WEIGH that .5 ounce? It's light as a feather so it cannot weigh much right? Hmmm...4.0 ounces really? OMGoodness!! Thanks for the truth Nutrition Tracker - that explains a LOT!

Seriously, the library is SO huge that it is easy to find a comparable item to your intake on any given day. And when you have the time to add a food you frequently eat, the process is simple and so easy to find in the future. I use the groupings a lot, too for things like my Black Bean and Salsa Wraps I enjoy for lunch so often...easy peasy to enter and utilize.

On those days when I don't WANT to track my food? Those are the days that I'm really sorry the tracker can count so high...seriously, who knew a "little girl" like me could really eat 4000 calories in a day...you can BET I would have low-balled my count without Nutrition Tracker helping me to see the truth!

GREAT TOOL - USE IT!!

How much food I eat and why. I love using the summary to see where my calories are spent so that I can make adjustments if needed. I also like that you can add notes which can help explain why you ate what you did.

It also helps me be more mindful of my food choices and helps A LOT with planning.

I am also able to see how certain meals/items affect my blood sugar. I found it interesting that the more green leafy veggies I eat, the lower my blood sugar is for the day.

If there were a time stamp on the tracker it would be perfect.

Lesson learned I eat to much...... all the time
Fat intake was high
Carb intake High
Calories HIGH high high

Still struggle with sugar because I am allergic to Artificial sweetener (Splenda, Aspartame,) afraid to try any others the kick back from the others was enough to keep me using raw Sugar
I did cut back on amounts but still use it Makes for using some of the light or recipes here difficult....

What I have learned: that I ate butter at too many meals (empty calories and bad habits); that I was not getting enough protein or fiber; that most of my calories were at dinner.

What I have changed: I eat less at dinner, have eliminated most butter and have added a snack in.

My blood sugars responded well especially to the fiber and I am less hungry.

I still have a problem not wanting to eat what is in my food plan.... but I am getting very good at real substitutions. I am learning to make conscious choices.

I have joy in my soul and joy in my step. Walk with me! Justyna

Love the tracker! I have been so happy that I've been using it daily! I mean I got up LAST night because I forgot to log in a small snack I ate before bed but as everyone is saying it keeps you accountable.

I am very active and on the go constantly so this is helping me to see where I need to make choices. My schedule at work has been hectic so this week I ate out much more than I like BUT it was very healthy cause I had to LOG IT IN.

I get up every morning at 4:45am and I'm at my sister's by 5:10 to walk 2:14 miles. Very motivating for both of us. Have to be honest and say I haven't weighed myself cause I've been trying like hell to lose 10 pounds for almost 2 years and haven't moved a pound. Well, I gain and lose the same one over and over!! Annoying! BUT my clothes feel better and that's important.

Everyone have a great day! You really are great motivators!

the tracker helps me see how unbalanced/over I was with carbs... I am finding it difficult to get enough of the lean non-meat proteins and hit sodium targets... frustrating, but aside from missing potassium & sodium, just being in ranges for meals and snacks has helped my bs#'s respond in just a few weeks. whew! thought I was seriously headed for meds!

When I got to Week 3, I was really sick and thought I would take the week off and jump back in the next week. The next week, I was still too sick to do anything, barely eating or drinking enough not to get dehydrated. OK, I'll take another week off. So I just am finishing Week 3 today. In the last 2 weeks, I have started Physical Therapy 3X/week and Cardiac Rehab 3X/week. I have not been allowed to do anything but chair exercises 2X/week for several years because of my heart. Now, I have supervised exercise at Rehab and am on a monitor the whole time. I do the PT exercises 2X/day at home 7 day/week. So I am exercising much more than I have in several years, both strength and aerobic. I have lost 7 lbs. since 7/12, even though my docs said I cannot lose weight. I am tracking every day, even when I was sick. So I am finally done with Week 3 and moving on to Week 4. Good luck to all of you.

this has been hard for me to get started on. I never really dieted but I never watched what I ate either, which probably has lead to the pre-diabetes diagnosis. It is hard to find the motivation to just start sometimes. I guess that comes with the acceptance that diabetes is a part of my life now and I have the power to make a change for the better. I pushed myself to the gym today and worked out 2 hrs! Now if I can maintain that momentum and get my food on track, then I'll be going somewhere!

The first step is always the hardest.
Stop thinking about it and just do it.

The nutrition tracker has been the most important Spark tool for me. I've learned so much about the foods I've been eating. For instance, my regular restaurant meals were almost always loaded with fat and salt even though I thought I was planning wisely. Or another revelation, I thought I might have some kind of irritable bowel syndrome, but it turns out I was just eating way to much fiber. Funny how things turned to normal when I reduced my fiber intake LOL! I never miss a day of tracking my food intake although sometimes I'm strongly tempted not to. Tracking my food keeps me on track.
I'll be going away camping for 2 weeks and so I'll see how much I've really learned when I don't have the tracker to guide me. I'll still be recording what I eat on paper and then run it through the tracker when I come back.

The food tracker was a HUGE reality check and teaching tool for me. The past couple of days I haven't logged but I also feel I haven't overdone it with the food. Heck, two weeks ago I bought a half dozen 3 Musketeers Bars and 4 bags of Twizzlers (I'm a huge couponer and they were all free) and they're still in the bread box!! And I'm looking forward to getting back into the groove of tracking after taking Sat/Sun off.

Hi everyone,
I'm tracking and trying to keep with the Spark program even though I am using low GI foods. I need fewer carbs to keep my sugars in line, but I finally feel good about being able to do this. I am on the computer each day reading message boards and participating on SparkTeams. My goal, other than to lose weight and control my diabetes, is to learn enough to be of some help to others. Have a great week all!

Week 3 is here and I am so excited!!!! I had so much energy at work I couldn't believe it. I work 12 hour shifts and I had to work 4 in a row so what would normally knock me out, I still had energy at the end of the day. Don't get me wrong, I was tired by 8 pm every night, but during the day, I wasn't lagging like I was a month ago. I love my new found Spark!!! I am going out for breakfast in a little bit and am thinking of the low fat low cal options that await me and am so excited over them. It used to be bacon I would get excited for, not anymore. I can't believe the transformation in just 3 weeks. This has never happened before.

The other day at work, someone had bought M&M's and hersheys miniatures and put them on the table, not to be mean but that is just what we do ( I don't do that anymore). I ended up eating some, more then I should have of course, and yes I did get a little upset by that, but I didn't let that ruin the rest of my day. It would have in the past. I read in the "The Spark", that when you mess up, get back up on the horse and ride. It works. You know what? When I tracked that night, I didn't go over at all on the calories or carbs or fat. I was so excited and I was totally accountable for my actions.

Kudos to everyone on here, we are all doing a fabulous job and I look forward to all of your posts, they keep me inspired to do my best. Have a great day.

I finally sat down and calculated my BMR and with the calories I need consume I figured out 1.5 lb a week was my goal I needed to stay above 1200 calories a day, but since I need to be above 1513 that means 1 lb per week. I estimate with everything I need to lose it will take 68 weeks being October 2012 (which will be our 2 year anniversary). I guess I'll be a slow loser for a while.
I did see a lot of improvement in last months calendar to this one though so that's a bit encouraging. emoticon

Hi all, I'm tracking on a daily basis and am finding that I'm continuing to make better choices. I've been going veganish recently and I'm finding that now that I've cut almost all meat I'm feeling much better. My blood sugars are going down too which obviously is a bonus!. I love the way the tracker tells me how much protein, fat, and carbs I'm getting and I've also added fiber as something I track "regularly" :-). Loving the tracker!

I log my food on Calorie King as I did that before I found Spark People. Log 7 days. Cooking fresh veggies more and planning my meals is helping. I find that using the tape is helping and I walk at home with Leslie Sansone dvd as it is too hot to go outside. My sugar and a1c are in control now but that can change so fast. Trying to stay away from restaurants but I agree turkey burgers are overrated. I usually have chicken salad out minus the croutons, cheese and bacon bits and dip the dressing. May have a small dairy queen as the treat to finish it off. Keeps me in my carb range and is something to look forward to.

Well the tracker works really good for my so far. Last week I track Mon. to Friday and really saw how much calories I really take it and how many carbs. I guess what tracking helps, because I lost 2 pounds. Really feeling great. Not just about the 2 pounds but also because my FBS are so much better. I also started walking again. Last week I did 2 miles a night, today I went for 5 miles. She how I feel in the tomorrow morning and do it again.

Doing Great Walking every weekday night with my dog since my wife won't walk with me. Little guy gets so excited when I say "Ready for your walk?' Wow, week 3 already? Well, I am feeling GREAT. I have more energy and feel better than I have in a long time. I am sticking to the diabetic diet, low carb. The only bread I have is sprouted grain bread, which the body perceives/reacts to as a vegetable. If we are out and I do have a sandwich or burger, I only eat half of the bun. I have little to no sugar (including fruit) other than dark, bittersweet chocolate pieces that have almost no sugar. I never thought a regular candy bar would taste bad to me, but after getting used to dark chocolate, milk chocolate just isn't "chocolate" enough! So good! No more cravings for "regular" candy!

I snack on nuts, seeds, jerky, small amts of cheese, low-sodium V8, raw or leftover veggies and/or meats and if I really need something else, a protein powder shake (pea protein has almost NO carbs - Swanson Vitamins has great prices.).

Books I highly recommend:
~(of course!) The Spark
~Dr. (Richard K.) Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars (2007)
~The Metabolic Typing Diet by William Wolcott
~Dr. Mercola's Total Health, which expands on Wolcott's plan and offers real help with meal planning and recipes. It also has a newer version of the metabolic typing test and he has it FREE online at mercola.com (Joseph Mercola)

These books all basically agree with each other and recommend a low-carb plan for diabetics, which my cardiologist and family practice physician also agree with. I've been on it for amost a year now and IT'S WORKING VERY WELL.

Adopt a homeless pet :)

I got a Turkey burger from a fast food place Monday. Looked like a burger with lettuce, onion and tomato on it. They messed up with the mayo, mustard and catsup. I had to get my husbands onions to add to mine to make it tasty. Bland. I will just get a small regular hamburger or grilled chicken next time. Turkey is so over rated.

The tracker has been helping realize where I'm going wrong w/foods......I printed out all my daily tracking and the weekly reports as well. There's a trend ......too little calories all day long and then splurging at night! I def. did better in the 3rd week. May or may not reach my weight loss goal for this challenge, but more importantly I have learned a lot and I will take that with me into the next challenge and do even better the next time. Never realized HOW important the tracker is in our journey to a healthier lifestyle, to a healthier "us". Even if you don't have time to track daily, write what you are eating down and then track it all at a later time. It's important to see how much of which nutrients we are getting!

My sodium was 7000 yesterday, and today I found a way to get the tracker to show me where it was hidden.
I had Campbell chicken soup for lunch the made a casserole for dinner with a cream soup as a base.
I wont be doing that again!!!!!

I have been depending on the tracker to keep close count of my carbs. Some times the count is short of the 15 and sometimes the count is over that 15 ! This way I know what amount of carbs I have with each meal and snack and then I can figure out what I should take in insulin. I don't know how I would have done all this with out Sparkpeople's food tracker ! I have not be able to start increasing my fitness yet, but once I do, I'm sure that I will have to figure out how much I burn so that I have coverage of food to insulin to the increase in activity! Thanks SP for setting up the "D" section of the community here !

Tracker is a great, if I didst have it, I would not be able to control what I put in my body, not only drop my blood sugar from 150 to under 100, also keep track of steps and mileage a day, it control my exercise, and tell what nutrients I put in my body, I am just about tracking everything thank you. also track pounds lost. emoticon

@DAVRADEN: Sorry to hear you're having a bit of trouble. Traveling is not an easy time to stay focused, but maybe a few small changes can help. Perhaps you can plan ahead next time, by packing nutritious snacks and taking a short walk around the building you're staying in. Just 15 minutes can help get me in the right mindset sometimes. Hope that helps! ~Anna @Glucerna

I have been trying to stick with the program exactly like I'm supposed to. But its tough. I went out of town and it was hard to stay on track. I have to go again next month and it will be a challenge to stay on track. My blood sugar was high every day and I have to work hard to get it down again. Hopefully next time I do better.

My blood sugars are between 80 and 150 which is very good. I exercise every day from 30-90 minutes. I keep track of all my foods, which is a BIG help; but I find that 1500 calories is not low enough for me to lose weight. I can hear some of the frustration out there with the weight loss goals but it will happen. It just takes time and being positive. I have lost one pound in four weeks!!

I use the Tracker to stay within my calorie allowance. The SP menu keeps me in the guidelines for the diabetic diet (you know: protein, carbs, fats)...when I follow it. My BIG problem is that I like to eat fast food. It's so convenient...and no dishes to do after.

So, this week I'm aiming for 3 days of all meals at home. Boy is THAT a Challenge.

Also, I like the Tracker to show me how much protein, sodium and other nutrients I'm getting...or not as the case may be. It's a real eye-opener.

I wish I could say the nutrtion tracker was helping my sugars and weight more. I have been measuring and weighing everything, but still struggling. I've been pushing through a plateau for over a month. I have been eating the healthiest I've ever been. I've been exercising regularly, but still not seeing a whole lot of results. Odd thing is that even though I'm not getting the results I really want, I'm still very motivated to stick with healthy eating and exercising.
I'm ok with no weight loss....I'm assuming I'm building muscle and losing fat.....definitely a good thing. I just really wish my sugars would come down. Waiting to hear back from a nutritionist/diabetes educator to schedule an appointment. Hopefully they will be able to shed some light on all this.

Glad to hear that this is really working for some of you!!! Keep up the awesome work!!!!

Although I can't follow this program exactly (exercise wise), I am tracking food and exercise and I have lost almost 5 lbs. in the last 2 weeks. My morning sugars range between 100 and 120.

I have tried nearly every diabetic diet out there and nothing has gotten my sugars under better control as fast as this diet has. Like Barefootn, my sugar was really high at 250-400. Now I am averaging 180-120 with just a few readings over 200. I am learning that if I do the exercise videos suggested in the challenge after breakfast and lunch (to get the 2 times required) and walk after my evening meal, my sugar is a lot better before the next meal. I am really happy with my progress even though I haven't lost very much weight yet.
