Along with the sleep study referral I also had an MRI of my lumbar spine. My doctor was very surprised at how much arthritis I have. There is also narrowing of the spinal structure (can't remember what you call it). So I will be going to a specialist. She also gave me a prescription for gabapentin. She said it works for nerve pain, ibuprofen, Advil, Tylenol etc do not help nerve pain. She gave me a low dose to start and in a few weeks will raise the dosage. It is so good to finally have someone believe me about the pain I have been having. Maybe I can also get help for my knee and my neck too. I can't get in to the sleep study people until the end of September.

Could also be a mild dust mite allergy. I have the same problem if I forget to wash my bedding regularly. I have to clean everything and I put the allergen pillowcase wraps on my pillows underneath my regular pillow case. Have to keep my night stand dusted and the carpet swept frequently too.

Has anyone ever tried to limit dairy products to effect change in breathing/sinus/ respiratory issues? My nose always"plugs-up" at night; wakes me up b/c I can't breath. I don't have any allergies that I know of.

That sounds like progress to me! A sleep study will relieve your uncertainty and probably help you just by the fact that you had it. I just went back to my sleep doctor and am now officially not an insomniac. Hooray! I am to increase my sleep time 15 more minutes, and then I can try cutting my melatonin in half if I want to. It's nice to have this success. I hope you get through your sleep problems, too.

Just went back to my doctor and she decided I should have a sleep study. They are supposed to call me back with a time and date.

I tried the ibuprofen pm. I stopped drinking anything after 6. I woke up with my heart racing out of control and my jaw clenched so tight it hurt the entire next day. I think there is a reason I wake up so frequently, that has nothing to do with habits. Did you know there are two types of sleep apnea? One of the symptoms of central sleep apnea is frequent urination at night. People with central sleep apnea don't snore. It has to do with your central nervous system, your brain fails to signal your body to breathe. It can be associated with spinal damage. I was researching this yesterday after seeing my TMJ doctor. She has been encouraging me to have a sleep study, so I told her about this. She told me frequent urination can be a sign of sleep apnea. So I am calling my doctor today. Actually there are three types of sleep apnea, you can have a combination of the two, called complex apnea. Thanks for all the advice everyone. It's been over twenty years since I had a good nights sleep, right around the time of my car accident, so I think I may have finally solved it. Now to convince the doctor.

My doctor gave me time-release melatonin. He assures me that there are no problems, even taking it long term. It has really helped me get to sleep. I take it an hour before bed. Of course, I also have a strict bedtime and get up time. I'm supposed to go back in 2 weeks. I'm still really tired during the afternoons. Please let us know how it goes for you!

Can you not just drink your eight glasses early in the day so it doesn't affect you at night? My cut-off point for drinking is 6pm and that seems to work for me.

My doctor wants me to drink a lot less than eight glasses of water a day so I don't have to get up to go to the bathroom so many times during the night. She also wants me to take ibuprofen PM or Tylenol PM every night. If they don't work to try melatonin. I go back in a month to see how that is working. Not sure how I feel about this.
