Learning to deal with Stress better. My initial weight gain was driven by stress - went from 135 to 185 lbs in 5 years and have been fighting the battle ever since. Developed some habits that weren't healthy and have been vollying between 182 to 193 over the last seven years. Finally I decided to discipline myself and get out of this rut. With Spark I'm getting on the right track and am closely watching what goes into my mouth. I am noticing the more I control food and beverage intake, the better I am dealing with stress. I sleep better, my mood is better and although I have a demanding job, my energy levels and brain power have improved and the days aren't so taxing.

emoticon My stress goals vary so much. I need to get to grips with being around people, going outside on my own, feeling guilty about things that are in the past {but in my present} etc. I am getting professional help but I am on a waiting list ~ which stresses me out. I guess I'm in a right mess. My goal is to untangle my life while gaining a healthier lifestyle.

I am not where I need to be but I am glad I am not where I was.

I'm sorting through clutter myself. Coming across lots of baby gear (my son is 5!) and realizing I have an emotional response to stuff has been a bit challenging. I've hit many walls in my process so this season my plan is to set a timer for a specific period of time each day and work on an area, closet, etc. I think the only way I can manage what seems to be an overwhelming task is to break it into bits and only do a little at a time, like learning a foreign language or an instrument - you don't master it overnight (or even over weeks or months in some cases).

So far this week I've been finding my turtle approach to organization to be far more effective than my (former) hurricane approach (complete with a looong lull in between frenzied sessions). At the moment, any progress is good. I DO find that as I feel more order in my home, my stress outside it is abating. Funny how that works out. emoticon

After 40 plus years of marriage, I have LOTS of clutter to clear away along with things I cherish that no one I care about wants. So I can identify with some of what you are going through. It is VERY stressful to have every closet and drawer and cabinet crammed FULL of stuff! And yet there is a different stress associated with getting rid of it. I have had to mull this whole thing about "things" around in my mind, and I have come to the conclusion that there is absolutely nothing here that I can take with me when I leave this world. So why not give it away? Why not get rid of most of it? Once I figure out the few things I really want around me for the rest of my life, the other stuff is going!

What stresses me out the very most, is that our house is for sale & we are downsizing. I am having to get rid of so much stuff, it is overwhelming me. It feels good & right to give certain items to those who need & want it. I've had a few opportunities to do that. I've given to some charity organizations, had some garage sales, ... It feels very liberating once I have cleared something out & given my cupboards, a storage closet, a room more space. It is very stressful to have to get rid of things that I like, not just the forgotten/unwanted items.

I don't see as how I can come up with goals for dealing with this type of stress. Altho, not trying to be stubborn about it. Just treading water, here, I guess. Writing about it does help, I think. I'm feeling like a lost cause.

After looking over my week and thinking about my stressors, my main stressor seems to be being afraid that I won't be able to excel at my job (or project, or volunteer work or whatever the task seems to be). I stress so much over each task, project or assignment that I procrastinate and/or wait until the last minute to get it done. Then when I am under time constraints, I work really hard to get whatever it is I need to do completed in time. The whole time I am working on the project, I am eating (well, well! - and so we know how this turns out!).

I don't have very good organizational skills, so I end up working on multiple things at the same time (multi-tasking) which often does not work out very well and sometimes also end up working into the night (not good for sleep).

Thus, I think some goals for me are:
1. Plan out my time (make a schedule) - put the plan into a calendar and follow it.
2. Don't eat while working on a task or project or while on the job. Take proper breaks to eat lunch, snacks, etc. Keep a container of water by my work station to drink when I feel the need to put something into my mouth!
3. Schedule exercise time and follow my schedule.
4. Set up time for some fun.
5. Set up time for meditation and relaxation (such as deep breathing exercises).

This is probably more than enough for me to work on for the moment!

Maybe don't start over from the beginning? Just start again where you are. Every moment is an opportunity to improve on some facet of being and its never too late to revise...

Consistency is difficult for me too and I used to really mentally berate myself for any times I deviated from whatever plan. Now I realize many of the "plans" I'd had weren't doable long term for me. So I'm kind of in a constant state of assessment, what's working, what's not, why did I hit a wall, how can this be streamlined, is this really a big deal, etc.

I find accepting mis-steps and moving along rather than dwelling or allowing them to topple all my efforts across the board works well for me. Acknowledging the lapse, reviewing the plan and getting back to business works for me. Its all a process, trust the process and every small step will take you many miles. You can do it!

emoticon emoticon Plans are easy to make, it is sticking to the plan consistently that seems the hardest, for me anyway. I have managed to make a plan, practice it for a while and even make it a habit but then ... BINGO ... Something comes along that blows it into oblivion causing me to start all over again OR make a new plan ??? Any suggestions on how to eliminate this??

I'm a bit behind on this challenge. I started it last week, but life got hectic and I didn't manage to stick with it. But I'm getting back on track and now it's time to set a couple stress related goals!

I only wrote one journal entry last week, for the start of the challenge. But looking back over it, I see that my main problem is (surprise!) over-thinking and worrying about things in advance.

It's good to be prepared, but always expecting the worst (or even expecting it seven times out of ten) is counter-intuitive. Which brings me to goal number one.

#1 - Whenever my mind starts listing out all of the negatives - or potential negatives - of a situation, I will take a piece of paper and write out all the positives - or potential positives. For instance, when I was worried about one of my shifts at work, instead of letting myself dwell on how difficult it was going to be, I should have considered all the good aspects of it.

And doing that doesn't mean that I'll be unprepared. I'm sure that I'll still consider the bad sides of things to, and think about how to work them out. Which leads me to goal number two.

#2 - Whenever I do come up with a mental list of negatives, instead of just ignoring them, I will write down (or think through) ways to combat them. In doing so I will have admitted to feeling anxious (something big for me), but will have reasoned through the whys and whats. And once I get that far, things usually turn out to not be as bad as I expected.

I am finding it difficult with my shift this week to take the time to meditate When I get up in the morning I do my work out have breakfast and then start getting ready for work, By the time I get home I just feel so tired this week, Could have a lot to do with the weather change here but it is also related to having a different shift every week and the evenings always seem to through me off balance.
So I am working on a schedule to help me organize my day so I have at least that 10 mins a day to just simply have quite time and meditate

I am sorry to hear that you are unemployed. This certainly is a tough economy for many. But, it sounds like you are on the right track in filling up your time. Good luck to you and stay positive!

My goals are to keep up with my workouts I've been doing for the past month and eat as healthy as I can. Due to being unemployed for 5 months is a major stress since no income and living on savings. If I can get get a job soon with few job prospects I got recently would be amazing. I try to stay positive but don't seem to get good luck. This is a very tough economy. Sometimes the exercising helps a tad. I gotta keep my mind on something else to not totally bring me down.

My goal this is week is to get out into the air, as cold as it may be, a little more often and reach out with a positive word to at least 5 strangers. It is also to send a little note to the ones I have loved most who I have not heard from in a while. Lastly, I would like to keep up with my fitness routine and learn how to track it in my fitness tracker here

I have begun my journal. I have also began an online Bible study Made to Crave through Proverbs 31 Ministries. What an amazing study! For the rest of week 1, I will be mindful of situations that cause me stress and identify whether or not it's something I truly need to be a part of.

I have two goals for this week. First, I want to figure out what is stressing me out so much. I know a few of them, but there are times that I think to myself, why am I stressed right now?

Second, I want to start working on ways to relieve my stress.

My goal for week one is to figure out what stresses me out and makes me feel like I need to turn to food. You have to figure out what the problem is before you can fix it. I know money is a stresser.....never seems there is enough of it. I also live with two grown men who seem to act more like children most of the time. My husband isn't such a part of the stress as our roommate. He is older than us and kind of stuck in his ways and isn't not good with change. we get along most of the time but he does get a little hard to live with sometimes. we live in a very small house for three adults....and have started looking for a bigger house. I shouldn't stress about this but I feel so cramped sometimes it gets frustrated when you clean the house and the next day it doesn't seem like you did a thing because there is something stuck in every corner. it is just overwhelming sometimes.

BEULAH, I am in much the same situation, still unpacking 8+ years later, trying to figure out how to do all that I used to do with way less capacity and energy at age 60 (plus exercise, track food, and spend time with grandkids). I think I finally figured out that there are some things (activities) in my life that must go, so I have to figure out what is truly important to me (church/God, family, my health) and focus my time and energy there. Others just have to deal with me saying "no" to their requests, or to me excusing myself from certain activities for awhile.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away...and, remember "slow and steady wins the race".

The end of week 1 challenge and I have always known my biggest stressor is myself. I constantly worry about things out of my control and sometimes things that might not even happen. I did notice that the more sleep I got the less stress I felt that day. Interesting. My overall goal to achieve at the end of this challenge is to be able to let the little things go and realize that when I don't get enough sleep I tend to over react. I need to just take a step back and re-evaluate the situation.

As I've journaled about the stressors in my life I know there is one that I can't change (being long distance caregiver for elderly relative) and one that I can do something about (not enough sleep, so I don't get started early enough, so I don't accomplish all I want to before leaving thte house for the day, etc). Also, I want to include one thing for me each day...sitting in the living room reading a book for half an hour. So, my goals for the next week are:

1. go to bed by 10pm so I can wake up fully rested
2. set the alarm to get up at least one hour before I need to leave the house.
3. call my relative earlier in the evening, when I have more energy to deal with their problems
4. read in the living room for at least half an hour

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away...and, remember "slow and steady wins the race".

My biggest stressor is money.

By the end of 2015, I will have learned to accept each hurdle as just that. Not everything I encounter is part of a bigger picture. It isn't going to have eternal consequences. I can only save so many parts of my life.

" . . .The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past . . . we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude . . . I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you . . . We are in charge of our attitudes."

I see many people have clutter issues. Me, too only my issues are a tad different. We've lived in this house 9 years and still not fully unpacked. Second issue is my husband's music room. Looks like a hoarder's room. What is unpacked in the house is organized, as I am lazy and want to know exactly where something is. Mostly what is still packed are decorative items. The attic has WAAY TOO MUCH Christmas stuff that needs to be thinned. Plus, we don't have the energy we used to have and it takes a longer time to do chores than before. Any suggestions?
I want to keep to a realistic schedule, with time for God, exercise, play, creative activities, family, friends and church. Now I have to add de-stress activities. emoticon

My goal is to meditate at least 10 minutes 3 times a week. Trying it with a timer will hopefully stop me from constantly thinking I " am I done yet "

St. Louis Woman: I should have known there was a Fly Lady team here. We have, after all, a team for just about every need! I'll take a look at what they're up to. Thanks.
