this has always been the "rule" at our house. And you are only allowed 1 "second" of the entree - fruits and veggies no limit.

At our family meeting last night we decided to do the similar with veggies.

Our house rule has always been that they must try everything on their plate. If they don't like it they can spit it back out, but they must try it.

We talked about second last night and decided that before asking for seconds EVERYONE should be finished eating their firsts (the boys suggested this even before I did!). And I put forth that before asking for seconds the vegetables must be all gone. They asked about what if they don't like the vegetables. I said, then ask me if you can have salt and pepper, or cheese, or Not Butter Spray, or salad dressing. If they still won't eat them then no seconds.

I decided that because my kids are older now...And last week I made an excellent chicken pot pie. And put peas in it. I HATE peas. The smell of them makes me gag even. But I sat there making a good example for my kids and ate every single pea. And it dawned on me that if I can do that and not die, then they can too. They get enough food on their plate to grow and thrive. If they want more, then they can bully through the gross stuff. In the same vein though I know what each one likes and doesn't like. I do not pile broccoli onto the kids plate who doesn't like it. Instead on broccoli nights I give him extra salad and only 3 or 4 little pieces of broccoli.

I was actually surprised when they agreed to that. And very happy.

I won't force them to eat what they don't like (I was forced when I was small and I have issues with that), but this puts the choice into their own hands. If they want more, they have to finish the good for them stuff too.

We're on our way!

We do something like that. I usually put 1/2 the amount of meat/starch on our plates that should be eaten, and I put 1 1/2 the amount of veggies on the plate. You can't get more of the meat/starch until the veggies/fruit are gone.

This also includes a salad if there is one.

What a wonderful idea! We have salad with every meal and we can have as much of that as we want. I only make enough meats and starches for one serving. When we go out to eat at a buffet style place the rule is salad first then your entree....keep up the great work! By the way...clementines are my favs...I keep them in my desk at work!

This is a great idea. I always make my family and I have seconds on the veggie dish, but if they are gone I will let them or myself have more meat or carbs, great idea I will just offer fruit instead.

This is a great idea. I buy fresh fruits and veggies and then they usually go bad before we eat them. This idea should help us finish our healthy foods first. This is great!

I love this idea! A friend of mine from another country told me their culture usually eats plenty of fruits and veggies before even eating the meat and other foods and then they are usually getting full so they don't end of eating a lot of meat.

My family has agreed to eat fruit or veggies before any of us has a second serving of dinner (protein and starch). We've stared bringing a large bowl of fruit to the dinner table in support of this change. So far, so good- I'm nibbling on grapes and clementines instead of having extra meat and potatoes.
