I already plan our meals weekly and we always eat dinner as a family. We eat dinner at home 5 to 6 times a week. We do need to cut down on tv and computer time. We both watch a lot of tv and are online too much. We need to find time to do more exercise activities together.

I am right there with you on staying online to much. I am also a stay at home mom. I don't play games either but the research and knowledge out there is amazing. I think since I like reading so much and learning that I will make it a goal to go to the library once or twice a month. Possibly if I do this I will have the urge to stop by the local walking track here provided by our rec center. It is close to the library and wouldn't be hard to just stop by. I really need to get more exercise.
You sound like you have done a wonderful job on Making Over Your Family. I hope I will be as successful. I have a 17 year old that does not want to do anything but watch TV and play online games. He was very skinny most of his life and does not think he needs the exercise or the nutritional value of eating right. I hope my changes will show him that it benefits everyone to eat and live healthier.
Thank you for the inspiration.

(KJV) Matthew 11:28-30
28 Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light.

Our goals are to eat at home more often, and to spend more time outdoors doing activities together as a family. We need to work TOGETHER on the yard, as well as get the bikes out for more evening rides.

This is a new challenge for me. I completed another makeover challenge that was less of a challenge and more things we already do. Making over our family will be more of a challenge for sure.

Goals:

For ME to spend less time online. I am a stay at home Mom and the biggest time suck for me is the time I spend online. I don't play games at all but I am here reading and researching and participating way too much.

The only meal we can eat together is dinner and we DO. My husband travels quite often but when he's home we eat. I do a meal plan every week and dinner is together around whatever the schedule is.

I love fruits and veggies. My husband and SD not as much so it is a challenge that I work on to get them their servings. I make breakfast for my SD every morning before school. She buys lunch. I pack my husbands breakfast and lunch for work when he's not traveling.

My SD is very sedentary and thinks because she's skinny that's fine. I am going to work on having her join me in biking and such more this year if it ever warms up here in MI. I am doing the Tour De Cure MI in June and I want her to do training rides with me.

My husband is a triathlete and plenty fit.

Less screen time. And more fruits and veggies is what I am aiming for right now to start and I will pick up ideas along the way. I do an herb garden and I am going to borrow the idea and have SD have that as a chore. She really has no chores to speak of and she's going into high school next year.

Kal - Maryland

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, favorite cocktail in one hand - strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming holy sh*t - WHAT A RIDE!

My goals for this challenge:
- lead by example a healthy and active lifestyle.
- transition form sugar treats to natural snacks, teaching my family that healthy foods can be just as much fun and more delicious than rainbow colored, artificially flavored, sugar rolls.
- establish and maintain a chore schedule
- train myself so I can keep up with them

My goals:

1. Plan out healthy meals in advance and stick to the plan.
2. Do something active with my kids every day.
3. Shut off the screen for 1 extra hour every day and do something else with my kids. And
that's just a start!

Our family has done well so far this week. Our screen time is reduced our girls, aged 3 and 5, have cartoons on saturday mornings and a movie on sundays with the family. My husband and I agree to have to tv on for the 6 oclock news and the few shows we do watch. It has freed us up time for reading and the girls have great imaginative play.

I have the menus posted on our family calender highlighting Breakfast, Snacks, Lunches and dinners for a two week period as well as a add too grocery list.

Our family has sat down and talked about having a healthy lifestyle and my girls have been great, they really enjoy getting to "pick" out there own fruit to try at snack times.

I am looking forward to the remaining three weeks to see what other changes we as a family can make.

We are going to work on spend more time together. We have a family vacation later this month, so this will set the stage. I also will buy more fruits that each child likes so they can eat that, instead of junk food as a snack.

With my kids busy teen and pre-teen lives, having healthy routines seems very important. I've tried various things over the years and my kids (bless them!) are always game for mom's latest "healthy" scheme, so I don't have to worry about cooperation, at least. My goals are to increase our family exercise, reduce screen time and add some healthy variety to our meals -- without making it a chore! We already have the habit of sitting down to eat dinner together as a rule (exceptions only made for unavoidable scheduling issues), so that's a help. I'd really like to find an exercise activity we can do together as a family that would be fun, easy and flexible enough to fit easily into our schedule!

I am hoping to get some new ideas to try in this challenge.

Cheers,
Chris

We are a family of 4 and I am a stay at home mom to a 3 year old and a 2 year old. My goal for week one is to fix healthier meals for the family and to actually sit down and eat with my children at every meal. I am very bad about not eating breakfast and lunch and just sort of snacking through the day. I am also looking for activities to do with them so there is less time during the day to watch cartoons. I am always open for new ideas on incoorperating learning activities and things to get us moving. This is the start of our week one and we will see how it goes.

Our family goals were to increase our water intake and spend more time outside. I thought the water goal was going to be easy but it has been very hard for me. The kids are doing great at it. They have also been great motivators for getting our whole family outside. We have a sticker chart on the fridge tracking all of our water in-takes and also for talking walks. I really need to be better about bringing my water to work with me. I also bought "The Spark" book this week and DVD's. I hope to start working out one day a week and slowly increase this to 3 days a week. I also plan on increasing my water in-take to 3-5 glasses a day. Hopefully by the end of this challange I will be drinking 8 a day. My starting weight as of last Sunday was 155.5. My kids are 6, 4, and 2. My goals for them are to have more active play with them.

Getting the kids on board is hard. The best advice I can give you is to make it fun. Fortunately we were able to get the family membership the the fitness center by our house that has a pool. That has really helped to get them up and moving without as many complaints. If they have bikes, as the weather gets nicer, those are another good way to get some exercise minutes in.

Good luck! So far I really haven't had too many pouty days from the kids and we can all see changes in how our clothes are fitting. That in itself has been a motivator for my daughter!

Our family is starting to eat healthy-the kids object to this though!

We are also walking a couple of times a week.

I love the idea of no TV after dinner-but that is the only time we actually watch it!

How do you all get your kids with you? I have two stepdaughters that both do not want to participate in exercise. One of them really need to be more active as she is already having problems with weight (even though she does not seem to realize it). I am working on losing weight and so is my husband. We want our 3 kids to be on board too!

Ideas? Suggestions?

The idea wasn't mine, but it cane from the fitness and nutrition team that my daughter is going to at our local children's hospital. The full suggestions also includes posting a list of hours just like your local cafeteria or restaurant would to help prevent "grazing" throughout the day. So feel free to steal this idea because it has been helpful for us this week!

~Each of the family members has to make a list of ten things they can do when they want to eat out of boredom.
~We are committed to going to the Family Gym a minimum of 3 times a week.
~Everyone is using there hand to help them understand the proper portion sizes.
~I have to purchase an OPEN/CLOSED sign for our kitchen. We are going to start treating the kitchen like a lunch counter.... only open when it is appropriate to eat!

Usually I try NOT to bring the kids grocery shopping, but today they're coming with me and each have to choose one green vegetable to try at dinner this week. We're also going to buy ingredients for Irish Stew in the Crockpot that they are going to help prepare.

Off to a good start, the challenging part will be to keep it going!

Just found this team today, so my goal for over the weekend is to clear off the fridge and replace all the junk with some colourful, goal setting, planning charts and calendars. We always talk about a chores chart and fruits/veggies chart, but I never get around to making them. I also like the idea of pre-planning the menu for the week.

Other than that, turning off the tv, be more active afterschool/work and eating more fruits and veggies will be our goals throughout this challenge. We always talk about these things, now time to DO these things!

*The herb garden is working well with my 11 year old son. He is responsible for the care and maintenance and for researching what each herb is used for and the nutritional value of each herb.
* Family walks to the lake after dinner is fun especially when we feed the ducks and do a bit of ponding.
* Family bike rides
* Playing cricket or some ball game immediately after school.

Screen time is a big challenge for us. My youngest two sons would spend every waking hour on the game systems if they could.

My first goal for this week is to implement a 'time off' hour. As I work full time outside the home, they have a couple hours after school before I rush in and start preparing dinner.

My plan is that there will be no electronics on after dinner. They can do homework (usually they do not have any), read or play board games - but no xBox, Wii or PS3 allowed - and for my youngest son the lawyer - it also includes iPod, computer and watching a movie. We disconnected cable two years ago.

The second goal (for the month) is to find one organized activity (archery lessons or marital arts?) that we can do as a family and one unstructured weekend activity (they do like to hike) to get us active and together at the same time.

Eating meals together is not hard for us, work/school week breakfast is as they trickle down in the morning, lunch is at school and dinners are always together, weekends we usually eat all three meals as a family.

Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy.

It's been a long, cold snowy winter. My husband and I joined the local YMCA to get ourselves motivated. I did go to Curves 3x a week but decided it would be nice for the two of us to be together, one hoping to encourage the other. So far, so good. I went for a fitness eval and his is today. We wanted to give ourselves a few days to get used to the gym and will do some classes next week. This Y has some awesome classes available and it's included in the membership. One of the classes we are going to try is the Body Pump. I also want to try the water fitness class on the other days. Wish me luck!

I have been a member of Sparkpeople for almost a year. My fanily has been forced to go along with me on this journey, which they have not minded. We have a very large family (11 of us). My son-in-law and I need to lose weight. (Although he doesn't think he does) One of my daughters and my oldest son have problems with high cholesterol. I also want my 3 granddaughters (who are young enough not to have developed bad eating habits yet) to learn to eat healthy foods.

I am also going to steal the herb garden idea. My husband loves plants as much as I do and my daughter land youngest son loves to do the watering.
What I have done with my kids is..... When they get home from school they have a routine list to accomplish before screen time. My oldest has been very diligent in completing his tasks because screen time is extremely important to him. One day I added "15 minutes of exercise" on their list. My oldest was pretty upset so I had him throwing a huge rock we had in the yard. It was strength training and also a way to take out his frustration. I walk with the other two and we cheer the oldest one on. It gets everyone laughing in the end and then they get screen time til dinner. After dinner is a challenge I haven't figured out yet.

TonyHagen, what a good plan. I love the herb garden idea, I'm going to steal that one.
So this is week 2 for me with less screen time, and I'll tell you a very positive experience I had. Yesterday I called home at lunch and my husband was preoccupied with a game on the computer. I thought, "Here we go... back to the old way." I drove home and expected to find husband and twins all glued to the computer screen. When I got inside they were playing a treasure hunt game and laughing their heads off! My little kids then talked about their dad like he was some kind of superhero for the rest of the evening and we exercised together. I told him how proud I was. He grabbed one of the kids and said.... "See, just earlier you said that we'd get bored without computer. Did we?" So yesterday was cooler than I could have hoped.

Around 2 months ago I sat down with my wife and my youngest son and had a family conference with them. I discussed and shared my concerns about my weight and health issues and asked them for support and ongoing help. I said that unless we as a family all got on board my hopes of health and fitness we only be a weak one. To cut a long story short, our family decided to do it. and very soon we had a pantry and fridge purge. So far all is going well apart from the massive amount of time spent in front of the screen.
My challenge at the moment is keeping my youngest son (11yrs) on task with our family lifestyle change. Screen time is robbing us from together time.

Plan
1. Play a sport immediately after school (cricket - throwing a ball - kicking a football)
2. Create a herb garden together.
3. Share cooking responsibilities.

I am a different man today because of SP. I loving life and am able to do things that I haven't been able to do for over 30 years. Everything is better and I do mean everything!

My husband works at home and sits in front of the computer pretty much the entire day and evening; my 3 kids watch too much tv or text too much; and I struggle to get any real momentum on improving my eating / exercise habits when our pantry and meals are in processed food / carb overload. It seems like we kind of know individually that we need to do better, but we just aren't doing it. In order to get my family engaged with one another and eating healthier, I hope to work in a small change or two each week and then build on that.

I guess I'm supposed to share my challenge goals but really I am going to share my goal challenges.
Cutting screen time has been a difficult task in my house. Once I do get the away from the screen I am either having them do a chore or eating dinner. They do all their after school stuff so they can get to their game or computer. I guess I should just put exercise time in there so they will have to cross that off the list before screen time.
When I get the kids out exercsing it seems great at first and then the complaints come in and the whining begins. I don't know how to overcome that. They all like doing different things so I guess this will be my challenge to keep them moving.

Cutting screen time has been such a good thing, but difficult. Its been good financially since we turned our cable off and are just using netflix in combo with the Wii. Its been amazing to find out how much more time I've got and especially time for exercise. Turning off the computer has been the most difficult for my little boy who loves playing nick junior and PBS kids. We decided not to count time spent being active on Wii fit or exercise videos as screen time. I just have to give a hand to my boy and girl for their support. They are doing fitness exercises with me and have given up a lot of their daily habits in order to support this. I know it will be good for them as well.

For us it's to get as much outside time as possible during the week. We get plenty during the weekend, though not nearly enough during the week. I have been walking my daughter to and from school everyday. Want to add in an evening family walk. GL all!

I have lost 5 pounds this first two weeks.Getting started. My goal is to stay away from fastfood.
I am working on eating more fruits and vegetables. I want us (my boyfriend and I) to pick one recipe a week to fix for dinner. Drink as much water as I can instead of pop. No chips or mini wheats. Thats most of it.

TERYNMTODD, get job! At lease try to three days a week... eating together... and then go from there. Love the cutting screen time too. My boys don't watch much TV and don't play game things, so it really was my husband and I that had to cut our screen time... hee hee.

Good luck! Sounds like your doing great!!!

I'm starting this weeks challenge today! Its hard with busy schedules to get everyone to sit down for dinner--it's usually me with the kids and husband later but I'm going to try to make a point to have dinner ready and on the table before my hubby has to leave for his meeting, Also going to try to reduce screen time for everyone by 1 hour a person and maybe substitute with a family activity or walk!

I'll be starting Week 1 on Saturday. My main goal is to get us eating better dinners. We are usually so tired and busy with our 1 y/o in the evenings that dinner becomes about being easy rather than healthy. I'm hoping to do weekly meal plans before grocery shopping and find a bunch of new healthy crockpot recipes.

If you have healthy crockpot recipes, btw, I would love to see them!

Our family goal is going to be reducing screen time and getting more active as a family. We did pretty good this weekend. We kept the TV off cut the computer time in half and spent the entire weekend rigorously cleaning the house. My four year old and two year old pitched in and helped with the cleaning too by helping with picking up their toys.

I chose eating together 3x a week. This is a challenge since we both work and have two active boys. Basketball and wrestling so after work its usually long enough to go home and leave for practice/games.

My goal is to get us all away from the screens a bit more - tv and computer.
We've made a bit of progress, implementing game nights, as well this week in the evenings my daughter and I have been working on a quilt-type craft before bed instead of having her watch tv or play on the computer.

I've also been talking to my husband about implementing some of the clean eating diet ideas - elimination white flour products & sugar, and increading fruits, veggies, and lean protein. So we'll see how that goes.
