That's a great goal. I can see why days are hard. I find, on the days I have down, that making myself walk is the best thing. It really lifts my spirits. We are here if you need someone to talk to. emoticon

Today I am happy to say that I walked my pups, Butter and Cinnamon, for 3 miles today and they were very happy. It has been hard for me to walk them everyday since my dad has had his strokes and I have been back and forth to the extended care and unfortunately it is dark when I get home. But I have set a goal today to walk them 10 miles a week. Some days I am just depressed but I know the exercise will do me some good and my pups too. They are not overweight but need the activity. They depend on me for their fun most days.... They are great dogs!

This might work. I signed up for one for each of my dogs. Added security and it can map everywhere it has gone so you could at least calculate mileage. And it is waterproof!

What a great idea! We have two dogs - one's mom was a cocker spaniel, but he weighs 45 pounds and looks like a collie (his name is Shiloh). He's obsessed with playing fetch and couldn't care less about food, so he has no weight issues.

Our other dog's mom was a papillon, but he looks like a maltese (Edgar). He is obsessed with food, and is 2 pounds overweight, which is quite a bit for a 12 pound dog.

They're both so embarrassed - their mothers were promiscuous and neither know who their fathers were....

Since we're just coming out of a long winter, we really haven't been on a lot of long walks, but spring is here, and it's time to get out there. Shiloh will love the activity and Edgar and I need it for the exercise!

tiko is a rescue dog from the Bahamas, He was a few days from dying his mate and two pups were found dead at an abandoned construction site that's why he was named (bob the builder) they figured he was probably at 1 year old. It took me 2 years to nurse him back to health, then the poor guy had to go through heart worm treatment. I could go on and one but he is the happiest best dog I have every owned and love him to pieces. My potcake

I have a 9 yr. old Rottweiler cross and a 4 yr. old terripooh. I walk them first thing in the morning for at least an hr. and later on for close to that amount of time. If I go on a hike or something they are always my best companions. They were both strays we picked up in Mexico about 2.5 yrs. ago and they love northern Canada passionately. I never get past the fun of watching them burrow in snowbanks and drifts. They are my inspiration for exercise too.

I have three adorable dogs. Samson and Delilah Grace are toy rat terriers. They are both 5. Sam is ideal weight and Lily is a bit overweight. When she gets in trouble for barking, she runs to the food dish! My baby is an emotional eater like her Mama! My third dog is a year old half Chihuahua and half Papillion. Rory was one of my foster puppies that I ended up adopting. He is underweight at 3.3 pounds. It is challenging to feed three dogs with three different nutritional needs. There are dogs in my neighborhood that come running up to my dogs when I try to walk them. In the Spring, I am getting my yard fenced in. Is there a place on this team to post pics of our dogs? Nice meeting everyone!

Wow, it sounds like you live in heaven. I have 2 Shetland Sheepdogs. One of them is really small and the other is big --- even though they had the same parents. Although neither would be considered BIG dogs, they are super energetic. Today they played ball, did they're training and still the bigger one wanted more exercise. I wish I had his energy. We have a small trail behind the house. Luckily its circular so we can go round and round. Nothing like what you have though. Feel very envious. Looking forward to the summer when we will be heading out to the park in our mini RV.

Motivation gets you started. Habit keeps you going.

We have two very active dogs--a German Wire Pointer and a Golden Retriever. The retriever just turned two and the GWP is about three (he was a rescue). They are fantastic motivators because they both need lots of activity. The retriever is far too smart for her own good and gets herself into all kinds of trouble if I don't keep her active and distracted. The GWP goes NUTS about squirrels and other small furry objects. If we even SPELL the word W-A-L-K, he runs out to the garage and starts barking and pacing.

We have a big back yard that they get to run around in, but we still take them for hikes and walks at least five days a week. The best is during the summer when we can take them to the big park near us--1100 acres of off-leash fun for dogs, miles of hiking trails and the pay off is being able to splash around in the river.

I'll jump in here with my lab. He's got liver issues and those meds they have him on have packed on the pounds.

We usually walk a slow 2-3 miles a day spread out over the course of the day, but when he has a bad day that can be less. I have to admit that having him gets me out and moving, but I do worry about him. Apart from his liver issues, he is still grieving over the loss of his bonded partner a few weeks ago.

Just FYI:

www.fitbark.com/

"Keep Fido fit
If you already wear a FitBit, chances are you'll want to get FitBark for your pup when it's available later this year. Created by the Kansas City, Mo.-based company of the same name, via a Kickstarter campaign, FitBark is a waterproof doggie activity monitor shaped like a dog bone that's worn on the collar and linked to a WiFi base station. It collects physical activity and rest levels 24/7, and data can be accessed via iOS or Android smartphone.

The mobile app can be used to track multiple mutts, and the app can be shared among a group of doggie caregivers. FitBark gives you breed-specific guidelines so you can see where your dog stands compared to other dogs. You can receive an alert if your pooch is far from reaching her activity goal for the day, or if a particular day's patterns look different from her baseline. The information will be shareable with your veterinarian and, of course, your social media feeds."

Kaizen, Japanese for "continuous improvement" or "change for the better," refers to philosophy or practices that focus upon continuous improvement of processes. Kaizen is a daily process of making changes and monitoring results, then adjusting as needed.

My younger cockapoo, Tucker (the one on the left in my picture) has a tendency to run a little heavier than his sister Piper. Tucker LOVES his food! He was so depressed the morning he was neutered and didn't get breakfast. :( He reached his full-grown size and then some. With our vet's recommendation of cutting back his food a little bit and getting him some more exercise (this past winter in WI was really bad, very very cold, -50 for days on end) he has dropped about 3-4 lbs and is good to go now! :) He is now a trim, handsome boy!

Hi Wile,

That's a great idea! I think I'll try to strap my phone to little Harry the next time we walk to see just how much more territory he is covering than I am...I also walk him off leash and he does lots of exploring and stick/and or ball retrieving while we walk!

A little consideration, a little thought for others makes all the difference.

AHLAJ77, I had to laugh at your opening comment about doggies being wonderful motivators, lol...you are so RIGHT...
Harley, my yellow Labrador...sleeps at the top of my husbands head every night..I kid you not. Every morning since we started hiking (back on April 21st, 2014) at 3.45am SHARP every single morning, he will 'scoot' over to MY side of the bed and plonk his head right on top of mine. If that doesn't wake me up..he will then *drool* on me and/or nudge me with his cold nose. This is his way of telling me that it's time to GO!!

We live out here right in the heart of the Mojave National Preserve, along with just a handful of other people and have 1.5 million acres at our fingertips to enjoy and explore every day.
I started hiking back in April when the temp. were fairly low...around 70 degrees.
With summer here, our temps will be anywhere from 110-115 degrees so we have no choice but to leave before the sun comes up.

Hiking has done wonders for both me AND Harley...
Labradors are notorious for gaining weight...they get pudgy and since I've taken Harley on every single one of my hikes, he is looking all lean and muscular these days.
Below are the hikes that I've done since April 21st, 2014...I NEVER put him on a leash, out here, being that we are 100 miles from anything, in any direction, there is no need for one.

You know that if I'm hiking the numbers below, Harley is probably doubling his mileage as he is constantly running around chasing after all kinds of desert critters, lol

I use an app called 'Map My Walk' that uses stand alone GPS technology..which is good as we don't have cell phone service out here...I've often thought about strapping my phone onto Harley just to see exactly how many additional miles he is getting in, lol...
I may have to syart following him..haha

Dogs are such wonderful motivators! My dog LOVES to go on walks. She will sometimes be smiling the whole time and just look up at me with the sunshine in her face. Makes me happy :)

My little one is doing C25K with me. I love it when she gets so much exercise she's exhausted emoticon It makes me feel like we both did something productive. emoticon . She has such a good time being out of the apartment, but I do worry about the weather getting too warm too quickly. I am looking into cool vests for her but am worried about it chaffing her. She loves the special treats she gets when she runs too. There is a bar by the apartment she gets to visit and we will keep taking her up there for a non-physical outing. She thinks she runs that place!

Off to the coast soon so Zelda will be doing a lot of interval training up and down the prom as well as long walks on the beach for the next two days.

It has been cold and windy so Honey only logged eight miles last week. She hasn't lost any weight. I think she takes after my side of the family, the more she exercises the more she eats.

My dog doesn't need to loose weight. she walks for at least 90 mins a day and does agility at the weekends and on Thursday evenings in the summer. She is also "daddy's little princess" and expects us to wait on her every whim. - as if.

Keep smiling

Cassie has gone for a nice walk last week, but since then the nice days I have been working in the yard and she has been checking out everything over and over. I do need to get her out on walks again, but can only do one event still. The yard work is really wearing me out.

We have taken our dog Honey on several walks this last week. She has logged about 10 miles. She has not failed to check out ever culvert, mud puddle, or fast food wrapper along the road. She has a GOOD time.

My dog Maury is a corgi-aussie mix. He SHOULD love the outdoors and running and having that herding instinct kick in, but instead he fears rain, wet, dirt and the outdoors in general. He'd rather hang out indoors with the cat. His exercise is walking when we take him, and playing with his wobble kong for hours.

Dogs, dogs......I have 2 dogs that have been with me since they were puppies. (We keep their weight in check and walk at least 5 days a week) I do rescue/rehab and have all kinds of dogs coming in and out. Currently there are seven dogs here for various reasons, our newbie is paralyzed and tried out his new wheels today for the first time (he did great). I have one dog that was quite abused and is coming along slowly, if he "decides" to walk he gets a one on one (he doesn't really like the pack walk). One little girl just had surgery 3 weeks ago to put all of her internal organs inside where they belong....what a trooper, she is so happy and vivacious she wants to go go go. Needless to say, I get a lot of my walking in with the dogs several times a day. What a blessing to have them come into my life if even for a short while, get well and find families.

Peace.

Be Happy!!

I have 4 dogs two travel with their daddy while the babies stay home with me. Marty and Xavier get outdoor activities every day unless it rains then we go to the gym where they walk the treadmill.

my dogs don't need to lose weight either but they always go for part of my walks So the older dogs get the 2 mile loop with me more walk than run while the youngest is with hubby more run than walk . Then in the evening we just make it a family walk for all me, hubby, dogs and kids.

A failure is only a failure if you don't get up and try again...author unknown

My dogs don't need to lose weight, unlike me! But they do love to go for walks, so I think this is a great idea! I NEVER take a walk with at least one of my dogs, so tracking how much they walk, also tracks how much I have walked!

After a lazy winter we have finally been getting our dog out for more walks. She loves it so much but you can tell she is not used to it after being lazy all winter as she is so tired after! Hope everyone else is having some great weather they can take the pooch out in.

My dogs Sugar and Buster have taken a couple long neighborhood walks together this week. Sugar is 11 yrs old and diabetic. I am watching her to make sure it is not too much on her. When she walks with me I make sure it is right after she has had a meal. She is also mostly blind and walks very well along with me. Buster loves his walks too and wants to say hello to anything that breathes on our way! emoticon

Every movement drives me closer to my goal.
