Another option for fresh food is CSA (community supported agriculture). I'd never heard of them before but some of the girls at work joined one. There are several in the Charleston SC area, won't be cheaper than sale prices as Walmart but it's local fresh food. The one I joined is $20/wk for 12 weeks for a small share including the delivery fee. You get whatever they have growing that week. There are some that are strictly organic, one for meat, lots of options.

Do not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you yourself shall be a miracle. Every day you shall wonder at yourself, at the richness of life which has come to you by the grace of God. -- Phillips Brooks

I absolutely love my farmers' market! I live in a suburb of DC so our markets are pricey but I still love them. If you go often enough and talk to the vendors you get learn a lot and get great deals too!
This year I'm going to get more bulk of things I use often and preserve what I want for off season.

Farmer's markets last June through October here in eastern MA. Produce is mostly Organic grown. if you take the time sometimes prices beat local markets by a few dollars.

I've found a farm with a greenhouse in the area that supplies veggies all winter...but all they offer are lettuce, spinach, squashes, sweet potatoes, onions, garlic, and other fall veggies. Does anyone know where I can find local tomatoes and peppers in Lafayette, IN this winter?!

The Farmers' Market here moves inside next Saturday until Thanksgiving or Christmas. I bought great watermelon and berries this week. Soon there will just be root veggies and plants from the green house. I still have tomatoes and peppers growing in the garden.

I haven't been to the market much this year (we live out in the country and I grew my own garden), but I passed by the market at Metro Center in Peoria last Saturday after noon and was amazed at the business they were doing! Lots of people in Peoria are shopping at the farmers market!

Hippieklaar- someone told me of a couple of links that show many of the farmers markets and in what areas. I think I just googled farmers markets and my town and found a bunch of info. It might take a little web searching, but if u do find one near by, it is well worth it!

I went to the farmers market on Saturday and bought a pimento, remembering how much I used to love pimento cheese spread! The only problem is that now I don't know what to do with it!!

Does anyone have any recipes for pimento?!

Ogden's Farmer's Market just started today but I was working a food booth so couldn't check out the produce. My garden is a little slow, so hopefully I will have time to scout out the good booths next week and bring some goodies home.

Someone mentioned the higher costs at the farmers market...
In Portland OR, a local store[New Seasons, if I may say] has agreed to provide an additional $5 in chips for those who use their food stamp cards, and purchase a $5 minimum of chips, to buy food at the market. Thus encouraging more consumption of fresh fruit and veggies...I think it's a great idea that could be replicated at other food markets. emoticon

We have a Farmer's Market open year-round in South Bend, it's indoors. One of my favorite Saturday morning activities with my husband! We usually make delicious meals on the grill in the summer all weekend with the produce we buy at the market.

Our Farmers Market opens in May. I can't wait! The fruit and veggies tast so much better. Of course pumpkins are later in the season, but I bought a cheese pumpkin and made homemade pumpkin pie with it. I can't remember the calorie count but it was a lot healthier than a tradition pumpkin pie. It also got rid of the preservatives in the canned pumpkin.

There was just an article in our local paper yesterday listing all the farmer's markets nearby. We have some great ones along with a few great little produce stands and stores run by individual farms around. I am going to make an effort this spring to go every Saturday morning and stock up on fresh, local veggies for the week. Don't know if much is in season here yet but should be getting going soon.

For the 5 years I worked at a summer camp in Lancaster, PA we went every Saturday to the local Farmer's Market. We now know what a true Farmer's Market is supposed to be. We compare all others to that one and so far none have measured up. It was amazing! Row after row of fresh affordable produce, variety, flowers, pastries, breads, meats, seafood, drinks, even pasta. The Amish were there, too. There weren't any sunglass and tacky tourist stuff to buy and there wasn't one guy selling something for one price and two isles another guy with the same thing for a cheaper price. Oh and seeds and nuts, too.

It was wonderful being able to afford quality items as a college student. Now as an adult, I go and think, wow, I know times are hard for the farmer, but these don't look so good and the price is better at Aldi or Walmart! I want to support the local farmer, but.....

Ahhh, I miss that Market. :)

I am anxiously waiting for their return around here (Michigan). Of course, that won't be until May and then the really good stuff like fruits and veggies won't be until July, August etc. It's hard doing without really good fresh stuff during the winter. emoticon

I got root veggies and lettuce from my favorite organic farm. They store enough root veggies and have some green house veggies. they e-mail me and then I pick them up once a week! I just love these farmers!

I can't wait for the farmers market to reopen...I'm already looking for some new recipes that I can easily freeze or can, so that I can get more produce and not have it go bad on me!

I like farmers markets. The quality of the fruits and veggies tend to be better than what I find in regular grocery stores.

I always miss the farmer's markets in the winter. I'll have to make do with the supermarket for the winter months. Next spring I'll be ready for some early produce, like Swiss chard and new potatoes

I already miss our local Farmer's Market. It's closed now and won't open again until May. In all fairness, it's just a very small market with a few locals trucking their things in, plus some crafters and bakers. I'm already looking forward to May.

Our Farmer's Market is available year-round (So. Calif.) on Tuesday p.m. Each week I check the supermarket flyers to see if they have any really good prices on produce that week, note those prices on my list. Sometimes the Market has a better price, sometimes the supermarket is better. Although I much prefer the freshness of the produce at the Farmer's Market, since I am on a very tight budget I will buy some produce at the supermarket--it depends on the item and the price. In all fairness, we do have a couple of supermarkets in this area that have really good produce sections that include locally and/or regionally grown produce. For stretching my food dollars, I really have the best of both worlds.

Our Farmers Market has moved inside and will be there until December 18th, I bought salad, tomatoes, carrots, green beans and 2 cupcakes for the kids today. After it closes we have a farm connection that continues to grow in green houses for the rest of the winter.

I have been able to buy carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, salad , tomatoes and green beans the last few weeks in Illinois. I have also seen broccoli and other veggies. They taste fresh and keep longer than store bought so they are worth the early morning outing.

I think the farmer's markets around here are less expensive, but I haven't done a comparison.

I just love the selection and knowing it is locally grown.

In our area, I have found that the farmer's markets are usually less expensive than the grocery. Plus quite often the grocery prepackages and I do not always want that much. I purchase what I am going to use in a couple of days. If find that often red and yellow peppers will be up to $4.00 each at the grocery and I can get them for about a $1.00 each at the market. You do need to know the local prices in your area to know if you are saving

In a way I'm kind of relieved to note several others posting about the high prices at farmers markets! One of the other teams I belong to has often promoted going to farmers markets as being a good option for those on a budget, and I say NOT! At least in my area, and I was beginning to wonder about it. I have several farmers markets close by, but find the prices way higher compared to the grocery store. However, that being said, I will absolutely make the sacrifice of paying more for the superlative produce available at the market--mostly locally or regionally grown, super fresh and quality untold times better than most grocery stores. The only stuff I can find fresher and tastier is out of my own small garden! Especially in our short growing season--good food is worth the higher price.

You are so lucky to be surrounded by Farmer's Markets!! While we don't have that luxury, I have been taking ice packs and a soft sided insulated bag with me to the market lately so things don't cook in the trunk on the way home. I even put vitamins and non food items in the pack that might be harmed by the intense heat we've been having.

I LOVE living in a stateline area that's rural! We have multiple farmers markets, in my village (on Thursdays, 9-1, which works well in the summer), as well as in a nearby larger town in WI on Sat., also from 9-1, PLUS lots of roadside stands from small and larger farms, again, YUM! I try to remember my rolling, collapsible (soft sided) cooler with gel packs to get my delicious treasures home safely. emoticon emoticon emoticon

I went to the most awesome farmer's market in Whitefish, MT a few weeks ago. I couldn't wait to go to one when I got home, but I missed my town's by a day and then ended up going out of town for the neighboring town's! I can't wait til Wednesday morning to see how my town's farmer's market is!! Especially with my new commitment to eat a veggie every day! :)

A veggie stand is really close to a farmer's market. We have several here, some from a small stand to a really large one that has several rows and maybe 60 vendors, everything from veggies, tomatoes, spices and fresh herbs

Bring a cooler with ice packs with you! I'm seriously thinking of getting the one I saw at Costco that's on wheels and looks like a back pack. It was roomy!

I like our Farmer's Market but now that I'm working - they are closed before I get off work. I'd try to go before I went to work (it's directly across the street from where I work) but it's been so hot, I'm not sure if there would be room in the work refrigerator to hold the stuff until I left for the day. I'm hoping it will cool down soon and then maybe I can get there. It's definitely the best way to get all kinds of veggies and such.

My little town has a Farmers Market during the summer months every Thursday. It is located in the Town Gazebo. Local farmers bring their goods and I buy mostly the best of the best tomatoes. Nothing like a fresh tomato. Many times picked that morning. ummmmmmmm so good.

Okay, now I'm inspired. Haven't been to a farmer's market in years, now I'll scout one out. There has to be one around close by. The one I use to go to is almost an hour away and that is just too far.

Things are cheaper in stores because they are grown on huge factory farms that use lots of chemicals and machines to pick.
I will pay what it takes to eat clean wholesome food.

I was going to the Farmers' Market every weekend or every other weekend. And, at the beginning, I thought things would be cheaper. Nope. But they are better.

Now, with my accident and being unable to walk for now, I have to be content and wait until I can resume my vegetable, fruit, and plant shopping at my Farmers' Market. It's the best place to get good food, full of flavor and lacking in hormones, dozens of pesticides, wax, etc!

I used to go to the farmers market at Metro Center in Peoria, but since moving to Little America, that seems pretty far to drive to get fresh produce. I just found that Lewistown (6 miles from here, versus 40 to Peoria) has a nice little market every Friday morning. A lady had some beets and carrots with greens, swiss chard, and lettuce. She grows her produce in a 40 acre "garden". What a find! A couple of Amish folks were selling bread products and noodles. I bought a loaf of Honey Wheat bread and some homemade noodles. Another gentleman had new potatoes and zucchini. I have learned to fix beet greens (saving the beets for roasted beets later this week) and carrot greens (delicious in scrambled eggs, and in soup). I also fixed a wonderful dish with carrots and swiss chard.
