When will your family come to live with you? You're certainly doing great towards that goal!

You can start that thread and we see what comes up! I'd love it!

Katty, you are amazing with all you get done. Even sick! If you want more info let me know and we can start another topic. Education all over the World. We certainly have the resources here!

Anyway, I have managed in 15 min snatches to get lots done in my closet. Not finished, by a long stretch, but the bins and storage are all in place. I am slowly, using 15 min pieces, putting everything away. I have all the boxes out of the closet and emptied. And we found lots of good stuff!!!

I'm glad you can connect with the g-kids on Facebook, Sara. Mine are in Vermont and we are here inthe heart of things in Oklahoma. Son and wife and kids came here for the youngest DD's wedding in Jan. and that was the first I had been able to hug the two younger kids. The oldest was able to fly down here and spend last summer with us. With the winter trip, no one was able to come up with funds for that this summer. I can't say I managed any chores in a 15 min break. Just got through the week.

You kidding? I'm a sucker for info! And I so much wanted to know about home schooling in practice. I had read a lot but didn't know how it really worked out in real life. Your info is invaluable to me!

Rebekah is having lots of very rich life experiences-a most meaningful learning experience!I hav read a lot about education-that's my field, after all- and what you're doing reminds me of Dewey's idea of education. You are doing great! Congratulations!

Sara, your grandchildren don't live in Israel? Facebook is amazing to connect and reconnect people! I am in regular contact with long lost friends, friends from all over the world, and family I hadn't had the chance to hear from in years!

I'll have a 13 yo American girl over next week, for the whole week. I wanted to have the home ready for her. She's going to experience a culture shock but I wanted my home to be as hospitable as possible for her. My illness and health issues following, appointments and accumulated workload has made it impossible for me to do much. I had started the first week of August and the ssecond I got sick!.

Today is the last chance to do as much as possible, and then I'll have Monday, Tuesday and Friday to do some small touches. I have asked my dd to be ruthless in picking after herself and do as much as possible in her own room.

Wednesday and Thrusday I'll be in Montevideo again, for the second stage in the job selection procedure. This time I'll have to plan a class following the method they choose, about the topic they choose, in a class they choose. I'll be given 24 hours to prepare and the class' teacher so I can get in contact to get info about the students. The first time I'll see them will be when I go to actually teach them! Then I have to defend my class -will have to mention the theoretical framework behind and say what worked and what didn't and justify what happened.

So, busy busy week!

Yesterday I managed to leave the kitchen nice looking on one side. Still have to work on the other side and the floor and inside of fridge. The living room is okay, but I need to vacuum really good and mop what is to be mopped. The bathroom simply needs a good mopping in the corners, behind the toilet and the sink. My bedroom needs more work. There's tons of clothes folded that need to go into place, and I need to do a good vacuuming. My dd's basically needs a good swept and mopping. The whole house needs to have the windows washed- except for the living room which got cleaned with Sandy's challenge. And I need to sweep the back porch/yard.

I wanted to do much more, but this is what I can get accomplished this week, and I know that will be enough for hannah to feel comfortable.

Wow, homeschooling. My daughter homeschools her two kids, now 10 and 12. The 12-year-old is on Facebook a lot, and I correspond with her. It's fun.

To report in: today we arranged for the broken garden gates to be repaired, and we're going to arrange for other garden-related work to be done. Bit by bit.

And this morning I actually cleared off my dresser Hot Spot.

Religious exemption is when I am exempt from sending my dd to public school because I believe that it would interfere with my faith. You don't have to be a certain faith.

We do not have a set schedule, but we do try to get certain things done each week. I have lots of books and depending on what we are working on, I pick the right ones. We also use tapes, videos and other things from the library. Last spring we spent about 2 months before we left Virginia doing field trips to all the presidents houses, the art, science and holocaust museums and Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown. When we left California we mapped our course, stopped along the way and did a little history of each state we traveled in. That year, she traveled in 26 of the 50 US states.

In each place that we have lived there is a hs group and they usually get together for sports, classes and activities. While in California we did monthly fieldtrips and monthly arts and crafts. In Va we did soccer and softball and a weekly chapel group. Also they had associations where the mothers would offer to teach classes they felt strong in. For example I taught a math class, basic Psychology, American Girl History and a German glass. Here the Army youth services offers free Physical Ed classes and she is involved in the 4H horse and sewing clubs. In addition the hs group does coop classes and fieldtrips.

The bottom line is that we are constantly busy with "unschooling" type learning all the time. We also do the more formal conventional schooling throughout the week, but whenever. She may take her work with her to bed or she may take it in the car or we may just do it in the house at a desk. Sometimes, we have the interaction type lesson where I am actually the teacher, but most times she is able to just work through the books on her own. I have the teacher's manuals, so I grade her work and record it for recordkeeping. Once I feel she has satisfied the work for one grade, we move to the next higher grade. Right now she is working in 6th grade and hoping to start doing some 7th grade work by January. Her schooling include life lessons that are missing from school, as well as lots of the Arts. She learns to cook, do finance, sew, crochet, plan events, problem solve as well as her academics.

As for socialization, that is not an issue. As you can see from her schedule, she gets more than most kids as they are not sent to school to socialize and are often chastised for doing so. She has hs and public school friends. She can be with some during school and others after school.

Hopefully I haven't overloaded you with too much information. But I have to stop now so we can practise her choral piece. Did I tell you that she got accepted into the children choir here? They will be doing their final performance in Chicago, Ill.

what is religious exemption?
Here we don't even have the chance to let a very bright child skip a year if he/she is above average. But I am sure if we had the option to hs, many parents would opt for it and not teach the child anything at all! It is a cultural thing- education is culturally undervalued here in comparison to the USA.
So how do you teach her? Do you have a regular schedule or you teach when you see she is to take advantage of the learning experience? And what about socialising? I see she has a large group of friends- I thought they were school friends!
I know I wouldn't be able to hs! I tried to teach my dd English, and we did well for a couple of months, then my schedule interefered. And once she lost the routine it was difficult to come back to it. She learnt a lot and I was able to correct many misconceptions. She enjoyed the time together too. I guess I didn't treat her class the way I would have treated a class I were paid for.

Here each state is different. In Virgina I hs under religious exemption, which meant that I really didn't have to report to anyone for the 3 yrs I was there. Here, they don't have that option. So I just send a letter to the Sch superintendent telling them my intent to hs and then I think I have to send attendance sheets in each month. Every 3 yrs they have to take test starting in 3rd grade. I guess that means Rebekah will take one this year. Not sure what that requirement entails yet, since we are just moving here.

There are several approaches to homeschooling. There is conventional where the children learn from a set curriculum, very much like being at school except with the freedom of being at home. There is unschooling, where parents provide children with a variety of life opportunities, but let the children choose when, where and how they will learn from them. Then there is the middle of the road, which is what we do. It is an eclectic approach where there may be a curriculum, but not always adhered to. There are lots of life lessons but usually more required than voluntary.

I didn't know rebekah was home-schooled! That is such an interesting concept to me! We don't have that option here. Does she have to sit for official exams regularly to prove she's meeting the standards for the age? Do you get official visits from educational authorities? What are the requirements?

The closet is looking so much better now, though I still have lots to do it in. But I'm doing it in 15 min spurts, which leaves me lots more time to do other things. Like homeschooling dd.

The 15 minutes is what works for me! I know it's only 15 minutes of house chores! The fact is, I am actually enjoying them more now, but it all started with Flylady.

Glad you had such a great start to your day Sarah!

Yesterday we weren't at home that much, and I wasn't even on line enough to go through all the emails. But when we got home from the engagement party last night, DH put the dishes in the diswasher and then I cleaned the counters and shined the sink. A lovely kitchen to wake up to! This morning I unloaded the dishwasher before I turned on the computer! A great start to the day!

This is how I do much of my stuff in 5,10, or 15 min splurts. If I don't, i'd end up only at the computer. My area of concentration this week is the Master room closet. I use the master bedroom as the schoolroom/sewingroom/craftroom. And the closet is full of lots of junk.

So this week, I'm using my 15 minutes or more to organize the mess. We'll see how it goes. So far I've emptied about 2 boxes and thrown away lots of really old papers.

Way to go Charyse!

you see Sara? THose 15 min are magical! I had always thought of chores as too time consuming until I started timing myself. A whole lot can be done in 15, 10 or even 5 minutes! I see time differently now.

Guess what? Last night I turned off the computer 15 minutes before the usual time and I used them in the kitchen. Going to bed with a shiny countertop and sink gave me peace and waking up to that same sight made me smile! I also put away some things in my bedroom and it looked much better! More peace!

Today I turned the pc on 15 min after I got home this morning and put a load in the washer and has something to eat. In a few min I'll go upstairs and make my bed and hand-wash a shirt. I'll also put away some more things in my bedroom.

All these trips have created chaos up there and have me exhausted. I know I am still weak. But hopefully, this next weekend is going to be one to rest- just in time before more trips and more activity.

Wow, haven't really been online today...really got excited about a few new recipes I'm making for the week, so I was busy in the kitchen all afternoon. Not much TV watching, either. Cutting out cable really helps me avoid watching too much of it.

Yesterday I sat down at the computer and decided to actually do the 15 minutes. I went upstairs, started putting away laundry, and then remembered about setting the timer. I set the timer and attacked the Hot Spot on my dresser. Everything I took off, I dealt with immediately, and at the end of 15 minutes, I'd done everything I could! Amazing!

Well, reporting my 15 today:

When I come back home from work I usually make a snack for me and my dd and then sit at the pc. I need that time to unwind. After 4 hours being talked to and hearing constant chatting and laughing, I do need quiet time. But my daughter wants time with me. She knows by now she needs to give me that time. But today I used the 15 min to go to her room and sit with her and chat. I also graded some papers. Good use of my 15.

Tomorrow I need them to catch up with house work. This morning I was so cold after being caught in the rain and having to teach in my soaked clothes that I didn't do other than cook lunch. So, dirty dishes, unmade bed, laundry to be done (it is still raining but I have my clothes rack I keep in my kitchen!)

My two distractions are reading and the pc. I also have never been able to buy into the 15 minutes thing. I just tackle a job and do it. This week I will try the 15 minutes. Today it's the pc, because I don't have a book started that's grabbing me. But I have several "jobs" to do. I also probably won't really be on the computer much. If I catch myself here, I'll try setting the timer, and I'll report back!

Mine is a combination of the tv and the pc...either one is quite distracting...cut out cable and only have the local networks along with the discovery channel now...was a big help, did NOT want to watch tv all day today.

I am going to do 15 min away from each this week...one for me and my routine, one for Sarah and her routine! Lol, love my little girl!

The challenge for this week is going to be short and sweet! You know how you linger over something for too long and then you don't have time to do something that would have given you peace of mind. In my case the distractor is the pc, for some others it is the tv.

So this week we are going to choose a time to get away from our distractor for just 15 minutes. Yoou can even leave your internet connection open or your tv on. And then go see what you can accomplish in 15 min.

Are you game?

Just a reminder for those of us tracking the pounds lost. Please only track what you lost the day of tracking, not your total pounds lost so far. If you didn't lose any weight today and you still want to track, just write 0 in the dialogue box which asks you your pounds lost. Thanks a lot!
