Thanks, Katty! I'll try those things...I think mine would be about 7- 7.5 hours of sleep, but I'll try a few different times this week, then the same time at night and the morning.

My exercise was heavy cleaning in my garage for hours!! Feels sooo good, but still not done...will keep working tomorrow!

87 cal burnt in 10 min exercise(5 min stationary bike, slow and used the stairs 5 times, 1 min each)

200 cal below my upper limit, and I think I no longer need to "use" all the calories I am "allowed".

My home still looks good, no dirty dishes in the sink, no dirty clothes piled up. all I'll need to do when I'm fine is give all the areas a good sweep and mop, and go grocery shopping.

I've noticed you either sleep too much or too little. My guess is, if you're eating veggies and fruit and no so many simple carbs, what deprives you of energy is possibly your sleeping patters.

Last year I joined a sleeping challenge and we were asked to jot down the hours of sleep we had, the time we went to bed and the time we got out of bed for 4 or 5 days. And we had to write how we felt in the morning. That way we found out how many hours we need to sleep (some people do well with 6, some need 9. The 8-hour pattern doesn't fit all)

Then we were asked to go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning regardless of the quality of our night. We had to take into account the hours we had found we needed.

That made a huge difference in my sleeping patterns and energy levels!!

And, my own little tweak,I had the problem that I would wake up in the middle of the night thinking of something that I needed to remember the next day, and because of the worry of forgetting, I would go in and out of sleep dozens of times! I started keeping a notepad on my nighttable and when I woke up and remembered something, wrote it down and went back to sleep. I got so good at it that I would write with lights off! That was very helpful because I stopped worrying about forgetting important things and could sleep. I don't know what changed, but I don't need it any more.

Give it a try Charyse, might make the difference you need in your energy

Did awesome on my exercise yesterday, walking, running, jumping, throwing frisbees at frisbee tag, lots of fun! (they were foam frisbees). Today, not so much...had a hard time sleeping for some reason last night. Trying to find ways to keep my energy up; maybe I need to pay more attention to my snacks...I may be letting my blood sugar get too low in the afternoons

Any suggestions on boosting energy?

ok, within my range
5 cups of water
5 servings of fruit and veggies
about 10 min exercise in 1-2 min sessions (what I can call exercise anyway!)

It is a clothes drying rack, or airer. It's a frame where you hang clothes after washing so they dry. Mine is made of metal, I can fold it and it takes very little space against the wall. I do not have a dryer - very few people have them here - and I used to have a clothes line but it made my tiny backyard look uglier and cluttered. Besides, in winter I only have sun there for 2 or 3 hours so I have to bring the clothes inside in the evening and they get totally dry over the night. So I took the clothes line off and bought a bigger rack. I had a small rack you can hang from any door. The bigger one looks like a folding portable table and it can sit anywhere. The great thing about this system is I can wash even when it is raining. I put the racks in my kitchen and the next day everything is dry. Now that I am sick, I do a load a day anyway! The washer is in the kitchen just a meter away from the dryer. If I had had to go ooutside, I wouldn't have been able to wash and the pile would be huge by now!

yes, that was curious!

Well, today I reached my minimums, and are still hungry, but I see I don't want snacks but a real meal. Yep! Amazing! I have had these sweets by my side for 3 days and haven't touched them! Apparently my body is learning too!

Had 5 servings of fruit and veggies today, which is great! And I managed to get rid of 42 calories by using the stairs 6 times today. I also lay on my stomach and moved my legs. That way my lungs didn't have to work extra and my leg now doesn't hurt so much (had a thrombosis many years ago and I need to give it movement).

I also managed to do a load today and a load yesterday. I have the clothes horse in my kitchen and the washer too so I can make myself a snack and put the clothes in the washer and the next time I go down I put them on the horse. I wash the dishes while my food is being heated. My home is in pretty good shape. It doesn't feel I'm sick and in bed

Katty...it's no wonder you're not reaching your minimums, you're not working out or moving around...when I was on bedrest with my daughter I had to make myself eat...my husband would come home and I'd have eaten nothing the whole day and not be hungry, cause I wasn't doing anything...I lost 25 pounds during my pregnancy and gained 60 after my pregnancy...reverse of most women!!

Everyone is doing so awesome!!! Keep it up, all!

I did good today, so happy lately! Need to work out more after school, though, and start my strength training.

Crappy days happen. (Is that offensive? I believe it is just an expression but let me know if it is inappropriate)

But they also give way to good days. Hang in there Gloria! Try not to resource to food for comfort, and if you do anyway (we are just babies, we're learning!), try to pick the healthiest comfort food possible. And you'll soon be back on track! emoticon

Charyse, you're making a wonderful job! I bet that beautiful smile of you is wider each day!

as for me, yesterday I stayed within the calories, and measured and weighed my food. And I was way away from the top end! Looking at the bottom of the scale has been so useful for me! Haven't tracked yet today
But I'll have problems to reach my minumums. Spent the morning with the doctors and the x-rays and came home too exhausted. Had a quick snack and then had to wait 2 hours to take the med and another hour before I could eat anything. By then I was too exhausted again and took a nap. I brought food to my bedside, but don't have much appetite.

UPDATE: I am just 4 cal short of my minimum, so, being in bed, I consider a success.

And I had 5 glasses of water. Weighed some food. And had fruit and veggies

Did only "okay" at dinner last nite. Today was at the brink of "full" but that may be the extras ???? Just hard to say at this point as it has not been a good week.

I stayed within calories for the 3rd day in a row...5 days of making healthy choices

I got moving at work today...my week to teach the warm-up at summer school, so we did some intense yoga this morning, then after summer school I began preparing my classroom for the upcoming school year

Cynthia, I understand about the busyness...used to skip breakfast all the time, sometimes lunch too, then I'd binge on junk food on the way home...we're all here to help one another.

Katty...It sounds like you're feeling better!! Hooray!!!

I guess you could call it a one track mind. I've been known to go 3 days with nothing but coffee and milk. Busy with kids, or my mom, or woodworking, or home repair, or whatever I was into at the time. That's why eating healthy is so difficult for me. I'm just not hungry. I don't mindlessly eat, cause I just don't eat. Now PreFlylady, I could pretty much hit my calorie count with the cola's and sweet tea I drank all day, lol. But since joining Flylady 5+ years ago, I've been drinking water instead. Yes my body has taken a beating, but I'm going to fix all that with HELP, lol.

Do I have to tell?

I forgot to eat lunch, (and snacks) I was on the run so much today, so I have to consume 520 more calories before bed, and most of that needs to be protein. Already had Dinner, so I'll be up late tonight, trying to find something in this house that is high in protien and calories, but not too filling. Usually I'm looking for high in protien, and LOW in calories, lol. Wish me luck.

looking at the lower end of the scale- still need to eat about 60 cal to reach my goal, but that is easy. And I noticed that because I look at the smaller numbers I don't eat as much.

Tomorrow I'll weigh my food again.

The house looks great even if I have been in bed for 36 hours. That tells me some routines have fallen into place so I don't notice them any more. It is as if somebody else has been doing my chores!

How's everybody else doing with your sumos?

A 30 min walk! That was excellent Charyse! You won a big one there!

Jari, you've through so many things lately I can only imagine how out of your routines you are! Being out of my routines throws me off balance. I hope you can beat that sumo this week and you have your life running smoothly again!

Cynthia, thanks to you I saw I was overestimating some of my food too. What I thought was 150 grams was only 100! I had weighed those things before, but a long time ago, and apparently my mind was playing tricks on me!

Today, I worked on portion control...I have a hard time even getting to the top of my ranges, so I worked hard to get in there today, and I did, on most everything, including calories.

I also worked on my 'wrestling', which is getting my rear end out the door and moving! I went for a 30 min walk today and it felt really good.

My goal this week is to try to get us back on schedule and the house back to kind of ok condition. Things have gone downhill/to pot/whatever phrase you want to use the past many days, and I need to get on the ball again.

This afternoon we put my mother-in-law into the nursing home. She hates it. It will make our life, my father-in-law's life, and her life much better but she doesn't see that. But we shall prevail!

Katty, I understand doing what you can then resting, then doing more. I tend to do that also. Of course, I don't get a salary for my job so people don't notice me working, but I do get things accomplished! I am trying to delegate - it's a nice feeling whan I can trust someone to do something and I don't have to look over their shoulders while they are doing it!

I chose food portion control too. Although I added my own twist of having to measure EXACTLY. I thought I was measuring well enough, but measuring my cereal this morning proved me wrong. Apparantly my fist is only 3/4 of a cup, not a full cup. So all this time that I thought I was hitting my calorie level, I have been under by probably 1-3 cups of food a day. (That would explain why I have to overeat to loose weight.) So I tied a string to my 1 cup measuring cup and have been wearing it around my neck all day, lol. I've just finished Dinner and I'm still 300 calories under the low end of the scale. But this time I'm SURE of that, and I still have 4 hours till bedtime, so I should be able to squeeze in something else before then.

it's 7:30 pm now. My "eating day" is almost over and I'm still 155 calories below the lowest end of the scale. That means I haven't eaten enough to give my body what it needs. I have an medium apple by my bedside, that's possibly around 80 cal and if I have some low-fat no sugar yoghurt I would have had enough for the day.

All day I avoided looking at the top numbers but I've just done it and there are still 550 cal left if I wanted to use them.

But I don't, I'm nourishing my body, not feeding it!

My sumo won a battle today as I got up and straightened my bedroom for the doctor's visit. The rest of the home was company ready so my contender didn't beat me so much. But I won a couple of battles too as I asked my daughter for help with snacks and med. And the biggest accomplishment was to stay home in bed instead of going to work. I see it is so simple for other people to call in sick, but I can't. Well, I did today!

Rhoda, my work schedule is as follows:
From 7:30 till 8:45 I work in one place as the English coordinator. I went today to make sure all teachers were there and nothing urgent to be done.

from 9 to 10:30 and then from 2:30 till 6 I work in a different place as an ESOL teacher. I am the person who opens the place in the morning and I wanted to tell my students the work they needed to do. When my boss arrived, I left my students with her and came back home. Since I was feeling worse, I called her at noon to tell her I wouldn't go in the afternoon either and sent a mail with the work my students need to do.

One of the good things we have in my country is the chance to be able to go home for lunch, so our day is still divided in two. It doesn't happen in our capital city. there most people go to work in the morning and get back home early in the evening.

Being a high school teacher also makes my schedule more unusual.

Gloria: to stop eating when satisfied is another sumo of mine! But I'll let that one alone for the week. But, yes! I have been recovering that sensation of being satisfied very slowly, and I have noticed at times that I am satisfied. Some times I pay attention to it,and sometimes I keep eating. but at least I notice it. There was a time when i didn't know whether I was hungry or not! Good luck with your sumo!

Rhoda:getting enough sleep is so much part of a healthy life! I remember getting up tired and without energy. It was because I was not getting enough sleep and I was not eating nutritious food. Good luck with your sumo too!

I love the ideas you shared. My family is very similar to yours: me and my 12 yo dd. I too buy smaller snacks for her even if they are more expensive. But I hadn't thought of you other ideas. Cooking for one adult and one pre-teen is difficult, isn't it?

Katty, I'm trying to understand your work schedule. Seems like you are still doing a lot, just in the traveling back and forth. Here in America, when we call in sick, we usually stay out the whole day with maybe a phone call or two to the office.

Anyway my sumo is getting in bed before midnight. Really getting in bed by 10 and then turning the computer off by midnight. I'll let you know how that goes.

The other isn't a problem for us anymore. When I started I found out that portion control was one of our biggest problems. But I have conquered that for the most part using the following techniques:

1. Buy single serving size lo-cal snacks. Yes more expensive, but easier to control with a preteen that loves to eat. Also good for on the go or quick and easy snacking.
2. Mini meals. I calculated what dd needs and divided it by 6. We get 4 mini meals using those calculations and the rest is lo-cal snacking (including fruits and dairy).
3. We usually cook about 4 times a week. But since it is only her and I, there are lots of leftovers. As soon as the food is done, we divide the dish so each serving is about where our calorie count per meal should be. Once we have fixed a plate for each of us, we package the leftovers individually in serving size containers and freeze. When it's time for a mini-meal, we can grab one, pop in the microwave for 2 min and eat.
4. Easy accountability. Each day I give my dd $1300 in play money (a dollar for each calorie). When she eats something, she pays me. When she runs out of money, she can't eat anymore. This is usually not a problem though.

I did all this to help her, but it has really been great for me. We are both losing consistently.

Personal Motto: There, but for the grace of God, goeth I.

My sumo is to learn to stop eating when satisfied, rather than finishing the amount even if it is a measured portion. With the eating plan I have been trying to follow, the portions are usually more than I can eat. I guess Cynthia is not the only one not eating enough. I'm thinking the difference will only be a few bites here and there. Of course, part of this is eating slowly enough for the brain to register you are getting enough.

This week I'll do both challenges. Food portion control and looking at the bottom end of my calories, and sumo wrestling.

I know my sumo for this week. It's a HUGE tough guy: resting, asking for a sick leave, asking for help.

I am the tough person who never takes a day off, who keeps the house running, who doesn't go to bed if she's sick. Last time I stayed in bed was about 5 years ago when I had both ankles sprained at the same time. What I usually do is pack on meds and food and keep going.

But this week, I need to rest or I won't be ready for another 1000 km journey and 48 hours on the go on Friday.

This morning I went to work, made sure everything was arranged, and came home. Sat in bed until it was time for my class in another place. Went to work, arranged everything for my students to work without me, and told my boss I would come home.

Passed by the supermarket on the way home-because of my day away and being sick yesterday, I hadn't done my weekly groceries shopping and we had ran out of everything.

made myself a cup of tea and asked my mom to make lunch for us (this is a big accomplishment for me) and here I am sitting up in bed again.

I won't move from my bed in the next 4 hours, when I'll go back to work (I have 3 classes to teach in the afternoon).

I'm going to win this one!

ok, team, once again, you get to choose, or you can combine:

LET'S EAT ENOUGH!
We'll be looking at the bottom end of the calories range this week. I do not mean here eating only the minimum calories in our range. You get to decide how much you'll eat. But for this week, do not look at the top of your calories. Concentrate only on giving your body what it needs. Think you're nourishing your body , not feeding it. Let's also take a look at our portions. It's all about learning to think different! Check out these links as they are enlightening about what a portion sizes looks like.

We'd love to hear how you're doing with this challenge.

SUMO WRESTLING!
You know how we all have one thing which always overpowers us. It may be a project we don't get round to finish. It may be the car drive when we could have walked. It may be getting too little sleep because we go to bed too late. It may be eating junk food because we haven't planned our meals. It may be we always forget to mop our floors. Or the soda we prefer over water or juice. That thing feels so big and heavy, it's almost as we have our own sumo to wrestle in our homes. Well, let's give a good fight this week!

Pick your challenge and let go of those pounds!
