Day #57 People make me eat
emoticon But it was my birthday yesterday! emoticon
I actually woke up feeling like I had a hangover and I had no alcohol.
Today I’ve been back to normal and expect to continue on that track because I like when I feel good!

Day #56 I’m so bored
emoticon My day began with a trip to Evansville with my best friend Tina and ended at the “food trucks” on the Riverwalk at the Wabash!
It was an entirely wonderful day.

Day #55 Food as a reward
Write a praise letter to myself. (I did!)
Non-food rewards:
*Get out on my new bicycle
*Sit in the porch swing and just swing without phone, book or I-pad
*finish a knitting project
*listen to soft music
*read something inspiring
*work a jig-saw puzzle
*meditation or a nap
emoticon Today I rode my new bike with my best friend AND took a short nap!
emoticon Dear Phyllis
Sometimes you don’t think you do enough. Maybe it’s that you are comparing what you get done now as opposed to all the things you used to accomplish.
It is Friday, you are looking at your big house, thinking of all that’s wrong with it and realizing the entire family will be here one week from today!
Now stop and think about what you have done this week and realize it is a mere three days until your 78th birthday!
You may not be Super Woman but you are a super woman for sure.

You have also done lots of other things and
Learned to ride a bicycle outside
Scrubbed floors on your knees
Drove your husband to the eye doctor an hour from home
Made that drive in rush hour traffic, with road construction
Did the laundry and got it put away
Made your bed every day
Cooked every day
Swept, dusted, cleaned every day except one

Day 54 Please comfort me

Like Don in Linda’s story I have trouble not turning to food out of frustration when my plans get all messed up.
I think if it’s my idea I can just go with whatever comes up but it’s not always that way.

emoticon My hubby had an out of town eye doctor appointment yesterday, frustrated me by not following directions.
We went back to a different doctor today. Not sure which of us has the hardest head when it comes to getting our own way!
Sometimes it feels like having a teenager again or a two-year old!

Day #53 Taking care of needs
From today’s lesson — this was written for me!
As much as you wish someone else would fix your life, ultimately you have to do it yourself. Even if you believe that your family or boss or lover should do more for you, other people can never fill all the gaps in your life.

Wow this is the wake up statement I needed after what I was feeling yesterday.
It’s fear I’m feeling, of being caretaker as we age.
It’s fear of wondering who will care for me.
It’s fear of the future that is keeping me from enjoying today...how dumb is that!

“What do I need today?”

Day #52 The food fix (It’s still the same old story)!
Ok, so when I get to the bottom of this one, it’s not being appreciated by my husband of 57 yrs!

Procrastinating with food:
Sometimes I just expect more from myself than I ever would from a close friend.
Yesterday as I took time for meditation and a break it made my evening go much better and I accomplished much more.
Today I need to give myself credit for what’s done, not let my mind focus only on what is not done.
emoticon Nobody really cares if there is dust under my fridge!
I would however like for my retired hubby to help but I just wrote a couple of days ago that I need to learn to “row my own boat”!

Day #51 Emotional needs
Today I made the list of needs and when I checked my last notes I can see this list is shorter and more focused than last time.

Help with our large house
Energy
Daily Support
Kind words
Someone to listen
A tiny house
Adventure
A night under the Stars
emoticon Solutions:
I received a bicycle from our kids for mother’s day yesterday so if I can remember how to ride it will help with my energy level.
I am planning a weekend under the Stars in a tent at the end of the month. (Memorial day)
I am planning what I want for my birthday a week from today. (Riverwalk with the kids)

Day #50 Empty bucket
*What drains me:
negative people
procrastination
getting older and physical changes
**What fills me emotionally:
coffee with my best friend
traveling, adventures
a walk in the park
my Hygge spot
Lessons from Linda’s books that keep me moving forward!
***Daily:
I need to learn to make my own plans and go with the flow when plans change.
I need to learn to fix things myself or who to call.
I need to give myself as much care and concern as I do others in my life.

Day #49 Laugh away stress emoticon
I have a really fun best friend and we have a “summer bucket list” to tackle.
It will be great. One thing I’m anxious about, although it was my idea, is a zip-line adventure.

Day #48 Stress is not ny life
I will say when this day came, stress was my life!
Thank goodness it’s over and I can move on to tomorrow.
—The day to Evansville, sister to Texas, plane delay & nasty niece comment!

Day #47 Food replaces love

I now usually plan my own birthday, I text the mother’s in our family to say Happy Mother’s Day early in the day and am never disappointed.

My times of turning to food when those painful memories hit are not usually holidays but on birth and death anniversaries. My tendency is to withdraw and “hide out” because it does get easier but never stops hurting when you lose a child.
I now have a dear friend who reaches out to me and doesn’t let me hide. She lets me talk, share my stories and is one of those treasures in my life.
emoticon It is with answering the question that I realize I need to reach out instead of hide.

Day # 46 Disappointment
I have had many disappointments in my life, some very major and many minor ones.
Today I feel like Gill’s story in the Sunday Spangler about trying to set up a tea and having all the opinions about food enter the picture.

My current problem is in setting up a trip that is suddenly beginning to make me feel like I want to just go off somewhere alone and not deal with the comments.
I do know that none of the problems I’ll encounter will be fixed with food but I also know the urge to “grab something” with each phone call.

Thank heavens for this reminder today to honestly look at the past disappointments. In the grand scheme of things this will be a minor one.
I’ll spend more time in my safe space.

Day 45 my safe place
We live in a large farm house with lots of rooms that aren’t used except when our big family comes home a couple times a year. I do have my favorite spaces that are just mine.

The “parlor” with comfy furniture, special pictures of travels, and a scene I’ve painted on the wall is a favorite.
The swing on the front porch is nice on a summer day.

Day #44 Food tracing
Thinking back I can see that my favorite Food memories were from times when there was harmony at home and I felt safe.

I’m not sure if I crave certain foods when I’m happy and everything is great in my life or when things are out of my control and I feel unsafe or both?
** I do know that procrastination and indecision cause not just cravings (usually pasta or bread) but an out of control need to keep eating until it’s gone!

Day #43 Food memories
As a child “on the farm” food was just there at mealtime, dessert was only on very special days.
My top memories of food that still would be a problem if I didn’t consciously stop:
Fried chicken (always extra when company came)
Ice cream (going to get ice cream after church)
Fudge (fudge for gifts - we got to clean the pans!)

For fried chicken, we go to a restaurant (two or three times a year).
For ice cream, I only have an ice cream cone, not a bowl.
Fudge, I usually only have some as a treat on vacation.

Day #42 Food and fun
Since being retired, food and fun have been separated on most days of my current life.

With yesterday’s lesson and today’s I can see that my real issue with food is my instant reaction to frustration and disappointment.

Day #41 Food and feelings emoticon (Feeling stuck in the same place!)
Three areas of using food instead of facing my feelings are:

—calls to certain people, doctor, repairman who didn’t finish a job, some of my relatives, etc make me feel anxious
Solution: just make the call and get it over with

—procrastination is an on-going problem of mine and food is a way to keep putting off what I have planned or need to do
Solution: do the hardest thing first if possible which means at least I’m doing something.

—having an idea or being excited about something and receiving criticism makes me feel intimidated or sometimes angry and hurt
Solution: talk to people I trust about my feelings; go ahead with the plan if I want to; trust myself to know what is best for me!

Day #40 Believe in yourself
The older I get the more often I need to remind myself that I am valuable.
Today is Friday, the sun is out after a week of rain and I live a good life.
I am loved by many people, when I lose thoughts of how valuable I am, I just need to reach out and connect to the positive things and people in my life.
Today I will reach out!

DAY #34 Food replaces meaning

1. Write a list of things that currently give you meaning in your life.
Exploring new places
Reading
Massages, acupuncture, meditation
The swing on the front porch
Sunrise
Bird watching
Painting/ on canvas, on rocks, etc.
Quilting, knitting, crocheting
Coffee with my best friend

2. Decide where you can add more things or cultivate the ones you have.
Everything on my list is doable almost any time I want.
I just need to remember to do something from the list along with the things I must do in order to live in a relatively clean orderly home!

3. Do at least one activity that builds your sense of meaning. Record what you did.
Today is a cold, windy, rainy spring day so I will curl up in my “Hygge” spot and start the book that I have intended for front porch reading.

Day #33 Create some joy
Although I made a few changes, most of my list is the same as before.
As I read through it this morning I can see that I am so blessed to be able to do lots of them on a regular bases.
emoticon Yesterday I spent a lovely long lunch with my friend and we are planning a trip to go zip-lining, an outing to the “food trucks” that set up in our town every Monday and a day to the Azalea Path Botanical Gardens.
emoticon Today I can swing on the front porch and wonder why I think zip-lining will be fun?
emoticon What I love:
When our big family comes to visit
Vacation time away with each family group
Painting
Knitting/crocheting/embroidery
Porch swing
Hygge spots
Reading
Classical and flute music
Vacations to places I’ve never been
Tina talks and walks *(the friend for summer fun!)
Retreats - time alone to contemplate
Bird watching .. eagles, blue birds
Picnics
Day trips to new spots

Day #31 Restore yourself (Round 2)
My restoration list:
1 Plan basics of meals before grocery trip
2 Finish the baby quilt and decide on painting for May meeting
3 Exercise, I still don’t really enjoy it!

** Fill in basics on StartYourDiet site / grocery list made (Done)
**Sewing machine is out, quilt is ready
**Extra stairs (we have upstairs & attic stairs) & treadmill today
**Found painting in the attic that I forgot I had painted, will use it for May meeting.

**47 Days until vacation where the main mode of transportation is walking, bicycling, or horse!

Day #5 No Willpower
The last time thru this book I worked on all the places where I face food temptations. Actually what I plan today is what matters, day after day.
Today I’ll have lunch with my niece and have already logged what I will order.
Today I’ll keep my plan for getting extra “steps for lent”.

My mindset needs to be that anytime I want to change my day, it is a choice that only I can make. It’s always MY CHOICE!

Day #2 I’ll start tomorrow
Although I no longer use the words “I’ll start tomorrow” that is basically the excuse I use when I procrastinate and not follow thru with what I need to do to lose the last pounds to goal.
What gets in the way?
*Daytime TV; being on line; not tracking everything; not getting enough exercise
Take the steps for achievement.
*turn off TV be 10am;
*limit time on line to early morning and late evening
*do a walking meditation each day of Lent

emoticon Others have done it - (2nd time around!)
Several people in my life are consistent in staying at a good weight and being active and healthy.

1. I will track calories and nutrients important to me every day.
2. I will get some form of exercise daily.
3. I will not let age or health issues get in the way of my progress and commitment.

“Others have done it and so can I.”
This is now on a sticky note on my mirror to inspire me to reach my goals.
emoticon emoticon Came across this from Gill’s past notes and it is so true.
Cause & effect... . "Control your eating, not your weight"
Learning to eat in a healthy way is something that Linda Spangle's activities help us achieve - eating less of things is the cause to achieve the effect of a healthy body - and a healthy weight will be a by-product of that.

Each 100 days goes by so fast but I’m glad I’ve made it a lifestyle change!

Day 97 Use what works for me

1. Keep tracking. - I’ve found this is the most important thing for me!

2. Keep weighing daily and watch averages. - This keeps me from the disappointment of a small gain or splurge of a loss. In the end it’s a trend up or down that matters.

3. Keep in touch with my Spark Teams and friends. - Sometimes I don’t spend as much chatting but I’m always here daily if possible.

4. Spend time doing things that enrich my life. - This is my favorite, being retired, I love to travel and spend time with friends and family (especially the great grandchildren).

Day # 90 Live “as if”
The comment on Spark Coach this morning for me was motivation then the great note on Linda Spangle’s WeightLossJoy was the combination of motivation and passion.
I’m sure I have lacked both all through January. Now it’s a new month, time to pick myself back up, not look back and put passion back into my days!
emoticon Linda Spangle:
Passion! What a strange word for a weight-loss program.
If you’re struggling with motivation, passion is the last thing on your mind.
Maybe you’re still trying to revive your exercise program after weeks of being sloth. Or you started back on your diet plan but it feels like drudgery, certainly not passion!
Passion and motivation go hand in hand. When you feel one, you’ll notice the other as well. But just like motivation, passion doesn’t appear out of the blue. It has to be created.
Whether your goal is losing weight or maintaining your current level, once you build more passion in these areas, you’ll be amazed at your level of success.
emoticon Creating passion requires that you live from a place of energy and confidence, not fear and insecurity.
To build passion, you have to take ownership of your life. You have to fire up your own actions and in some areas, push yourself a little harder.

Day #58 Heart Hunger
One good thing about the Christmas season for me is that there are few "heart hunger" moments.
There are many more "head hunger" moments though so the question is the same.
"Will eating change this?"

Day #57 Head hunger “insteads”
Today on this cold rainy New Year’s Eve
I will quilt
I will make calls to wish “happy new year” to those I love
I will walk on treadmill and do “Functional Fitness” exercises

Day #56 Head Hunger
I generally know that when I plan too much into my day and feel frazzled that my "head hunger" makes me want crackers, nuts, popcorn, etc.
I also know that when I plan and don’t follow through, it makes me feel frustrated with myself and the reaction of Head hunger is the same.

I once admitted anger was a stress in my life sometimes. I feel I’ve dealt with it by being aware. The problem currently is frustration.
I need to say “there was a pause”, and get past the feelings. This problem needs action in the moment not later after the food fix.

Day #38
emoticon I swear some day I will need to take the current 10 lessons and spend 100 days on just them!
There are days I feel the push-back to what I’m reading and some days I tend to write two pages about what I’m feeling. Today it’s pages but I’m not up to sharing, just know I have a lot to work on at the moment.
Lots of things are now a regular part of my life, some are definitely not! I guess knowing the difference is a beginning.

Day #30 Postpone Eating
This lesson has become more a part of my life, less tasting as I cook and fewer snacks when it is close to meal time. This entire section of the book on conscious eating is has become an important part of every day.
emoticon And now we are back to the Christmas season with so many places to go.
Remember the two-bite rule. The first two bites taste the best. If those aren’t good, don't eat the rest.
Remember to postpone eating when it’s a drinks and appetizer party!
Remember to enjoy the friends more than worry about the food!

Day 29 — Handheld Foods
The most often handheld item that I need to think about is how often I tend to grab a sandwich when I’m busy. This easy fix limits my veggies and is never a well-balanced solution.
I’m usually standing, driving or totally thinking of anything but eating when this happens! Not a good solution and is most often caused by bad or no planning!
emoticon emoticon Time to make an entire, more intense December plan.

I am sometimes fine when I first spot something but can’t seem to get to the end of the day without having it come back to mind over and over. At home unless I get rid of it, which I can’t always, I find it very very difficult to deal with.

Day 28 — Eating because it’s there
Most likely this will be my problem until I make a true decision to put a stop to it.
“ I won’t eat food just because it shows up!”
“ I won’t eat food just because it shows up!”
“ I won’t eat food just because it shows up!

Day 27 — Eat dessert when it’s special (Saturday, Dec 1)
I love the idea of new, it’s a new month, a new in-between challenge, and a new season of joy!

Dessert is not usually one of my main problems when it comes to weight loss or maintenance.
The one thing that I have for sure is the homemade cheesecake that my daughter-in-law makes for our family get togethers. We have those weekends three times a year on average so I will be fine with that.

Day 26 — When food disappoints
This is an easy lesson to think about, no need to find something for a test. Earlier this week I made a recipe with bananas that needed used. It wasn’t very good, part of it is still sitting on the counter and after reading this, it will go into the compost bin.
Just because I made it doesn’t mean I need to eat the rest.
I will stop wasting my calories on things that aren’t that good.

Day 25 — Smaller amounts, less often
Log Inn; Hamburger; Biscuits; Fried food;
Since a new month is so close, I will use my calendar to really add:
have a hamburger once next month
make yeast biscuits for Christmas
go to the Log Inn Restaurant for Spring Break!

Day 24 — Eat for satisfaction
This is a good promise to make every day! It is hard to feel guilt and satisfaction at the same time. Sometimes I forget about the satisfaction part!
The lesson from Sparkcoach today is to turn off all distractions while eating. I did put the TV on mute!

Day 23 — Savoring
My favorite foods are not sweets so what I decide to use today for this lesson will probably be something else.
It is a memorable lesson for me and one that I know is important to practice slowing down and really tasting my food.

...I’ll post later what I choose to savor today.
I ended up with a cracker, part of a leftover stash from our family dinner. I don’t think I will forget that slowing and enjoying the flavors and textures made such a difference.
I have eaten those crackers before but not alone, they are usually topped with something. This was a learning experience.

Day 21 — Multitask with food
Most of the time I do other things while I’m eating. Today I had breakfast with my friend and did manage to have a good conversation with her as I paid attention to the food.
I was aware of the flavors, the temperature, and realized I was slowing down, and in the end was comfortably full.

Day 20 — Eat with awareness
I’m a day late but I did eat two bites of brownies with awareness today.
I thoroughly enjoyed the texture, the flavor (which was wonderful) and then let my husband have the rest.

Day 13 —Oops I forgot to eat
This is not a problem for me at this point in my life. It is more likely that the problem is not having set times but sometimes having food all day.
I’ve realized I can’t eat by when I’m hungry because it’s just sometimes non-stop.

Day 12 of 100 —Fuel or filler
As I look back over my food from yesterday I can see most of my regular meals are fuel.
There were no filler items on my tracker yesterday but that isn’t always the case when I am out with friends.
This lesson makes it easy to make the difference unmistakable!

Day 11 of 100 —Two purposes of food
1. To fuel my body I need to track what I eat and pay attention to how many stops I make.
2. To appreciate flavors I need to slow down, plan better and remember I don’t have to eat everything offered to me.

Day 10 of 100 —Appreciate good support
I don’t need compliments on a regular basis.
Many of my close family and friends are also into eating healthy so when we are together the focus is not entirely on food but on having a good visit with each other.
Days 1-10
1. I’ve joined in this book again because age, health issues and life keep changing.
2. I realize I can revert to old habits very easily, which is why I keep working on myself.
3. I still give in to temptation too easily and overeat when I'm alone.

Day 9 of 100 —Here’s what I want
1. If you see me eating something not on my food plan.....ignore it completely!
If I've decided to eat it I will add it to my tracker and keep going.
2. When you see me making progress such as losing weight.....compliment me on how I look AND give me non-food gifts or rewards!
3. When I'm struggling or gaining weight........ignore it or hug me and show extra affection if you know why it's happening.
It is usually because I'm sick or scared so a hug or extra attention would be nice!
4. When I'm making progress you can't see (i.e. improving self-esteem).....just ignore it.
When I'm working on myself, it really is all about me not anything against you!
5. When I've maintained my weight (even if I may still want to lose more)........compliment me on my efforts and occasionally tell me you are proud of me.

Day 8 of 100 —Help me please
I’m glad I looked back to see what I’ve written before because my instant reaction is always the same “no help needed”!
I realize I sometimes I like help or comments and sometimes I really don’t. It’s really about me not them.
My husband knows we both need to eat good food, my best friends are accustomed to my way of eating and my Spark friends keep me moving forward.

Day 7 of 100 —I can do it!
I can do this because eating healthy food makes me feel good.
I can do this because I never want to start over.
I can do this because I have lots of friends helping me with good ideas and lots of encouragement.

Day 6 of 100 —Protect your program
It is my job to protect my program, nobody else will do it for me.
Sometimes I need to “protect my program from myself”!
With this book, I began to understand my pattern of lifetime yo-yo dieting.
This lesson is one of the main ones for me to remember because most of the time, since I’m retired, my over-eating is done when I’m home alone and haven’t exercised all day!
Nobody else will care about my health like I do.

Day 5 of 100 —Magic Notebook
I always try to remember the line from the book “just because you think about a food doesn’t mean you have to eat it”!
My Magic Notebook is now more for my reaction to food thoughts rather than specific items since I’ve been through the book before.
If I think I’m hungry after I’ve already eaten I try to use the notebook to figure out what is really going on (procrastination, boredom, frustration) and find a different solution.
At this point I can sometimes just stop, think, and not even write anything since I’ve been through the book before.

Day 3 of 100 —Do it anyway
Today I will pay close attention to my actions, not just my intentions.
My meals and exercise are planned and written in my journal.
*When I don’t feel like cooking, I’ll do it anyway.
*When I don’t feel like taking a walk, I’ll do it anyway.
*When I don’t want to finish my “to-do” list, I’ll do it anyway

Day 2 of 100 —Interested or Committed
I always start out very Committed and at some point end up realizing I’m no longer so committed.
I am determined to stay on track, check in every day and remember why it’s important for my life.
I will fill in the trackers for nutrition and exercise.
I will finish one project before starting another.
I will focus on what is really important to my life.

Day 1 of 100 —I used to be that way
I used to go on diets, quit and end up gaining all the weight back.
**Now my goal is to change my life to healthy eating, not dieting.
I used to set up exercise challenges and give up within a few weeks.
**Now I add extra steps, stair climbing and activity throughout my days.
I used to spend too much time sitting, watching TV or crafting.
**Now I’ll set the timer and try to move around instead.
I have started this 100 days before, never reached my life goal of 159 which is healthy on the BMI Chart.
**Now I will just focus on 1 day at a time and remember that is what will make the difference on day 100!

My journey to a healthy weight began at 209 on Sparkpeople and I’m now down to 178.
My all time goal is 159 which is very doable, it will just take commitment on my part.
**I want to continue to stay off medication
**I want to enjoy traveling and all my retirement years.
