Some how I already seem to be following these guidelines... for the most part. I have gotten away from daily weigh-ins but will reconsider based on what Linda shared about the research. I was not aware that "people who weigh themselves every day are more likely to lose weight as well as maintain..." It does make sense though - accountability!!

I'm also changing my weigh day. For years it was Friday... then I could "get away" with weekend indulgences, stick to my program all week before getting that number. On the other hand, it worked for me - so there is that.

Some interesting ones I hadn't considered... for me (& it looks like others) the simple carbs and salt show up very quickly. Great takeway -water gain/loss does not equal weight gain/loss

Some of the items on Linda's list were familiar but a few I had not considered. One of those was the influence of exercise - not that I do much of anything that qualifies as hard exercise any more but I do have days that I exercise more than others and usually see a drop as opposed to the influence of fluid retention Linda mentioned.

Bottom line? Linda nailed it - patience!

As I've already said, my scale is an oldie but a goodie and, fortunately, accurate or at least in alignment with the one at my doctor's office. So I'll stick with it. Several good points in this chapter - one that jumped out at me was sticking to one scale. Makes absolute sense - it doesn't really matter what measurement system or tool you use - being consistent is what's important.

Chpt 7 The Games We Play

This chapter struck close to home as well as tickling my funny bone. My habits include; weighing first thing in the morning after I pee but before drinking any water or getting dressed; making sure the scale is on a hard surface; dressing "light" on doctor days. My mother, who must record her weight for medical purposes (mainly to track significant water retention "trends") came up with similar habits - all on her own... She has a fancy new digital scale and weighs herself three times - then takes the average. I think there is some validity in our habits but do see a few that made my eyes roll on Linda's list. On the other hand, I can remember days in my youth when I probably tried a few of them before I became more "experienced" in all things weigh-related.

Chpt 6 Keep your scale
Have had the same scale for 45+yrs and it's not going any where. It may be the old-fashioned kind and it may be a tad discolored in places but it's always been highly accurate. And that's what is important - the data! One of the things that struck me about this chapter is Linda's suggestion to borrow the concept of "trending" and applying it to our scale data. It's a new slant on one of the basics.

Interesting "quiz"... not so much new information as confirming what I've learned through experience over the years.

Best takeaway - this is what I will post by my scale "It's just a number."

Today's chapter made me smile... drama with the scale!! Not getting caught up in drama is on my goal list for 2018 so this is right up my alley! I see a "personal scale plan" in my future

Day 2/Chpt 2
Linda touches on a sad but true aspect of "weighing in"... too often it influences our whole day. This is especially true when I hit the dreaded plateau. Am looking forward to discovering ways to break this pattern in addition to today's example of using affirmations.

My scale broke a few years ago.. I threw it out and never replaced it... Since losing most of weight I go to my drs. office once a month to get weighed.. It works for me since I am not so much obsessed with the amount of weight I lose but more with feeling better, feeling better in my clothes.. and healthy numbers when i have a check up..it was an informative chapter and a good reminder..There is something to be said for someone who weighs daily..especially when you get to goal weight..but I am not one of them.

The pain passes ~ only the beauty remains...

Day One

* 2 or 3 things I learned... not so much new but great reminder that there are so many factors that influence that number!

Ways I relate... Linda recapped most of what goes on in my head every time I step on the scale. Who knew a hunk of metal could have such power over us? probably every single one of us...

What will I do differently? Will decide whether a daily weigh in works for me... probably not for the very reasons Linda mentions. On the other hand, once a week may not be often enough to give useful feedback. Will make that determination along the way in turning the scale into that powerful tool and best friend Linda describes.
