Day 11: Two Purposes of Food

Fuel and appreciate flavors.

Yes! I use to and sometimes still give in to mindless munching or eating. But more and more I am moving to eating for fuel and to enjoy what I'm eating. I don't always succeed but like many things, it's a work in progress.

Great post Marcia!
I know just what you mean about clothes and hair and make-up etc etc..........you're lucky to have a daughter who can give you good advice on clothes (when necessary!)

Day 10 Appreciate Good Support

I do share my goals and plans with people. I share my weight loss goals with my DH and with my Spark 5% team. I share other goals with my sister and with my daughter and with a good friend. Each of those are important to different areas of my life.

Learn to accept compliments: I learned this years ago as a music major in college. It was easy to want to explain about all the reasons I didn't deserve a compliment on my performance, it was hard to just say thank you, but as time went by I learn that lesson. People didn't often notice the mistakes I had made after all, I was the one who was focused on those.
The same applies to the way I look, whether in losing weight or how my hair looks (I'm notoriously bad at fixing my hair) or whether I have on makeup, or how I dress (the older I get the less I seem to care, or I do care but my pets are kind of hard on my clothes).

So instead of making excuses a simple smile and a thank you is sufficient.

Don't set them up. I never do that. If I ask someone if something makes me look fat, it's because I really want to know. I don't play those kinds of games and I'd only ask my DD as she's the best at helping me buy clothes.

Day 9: Here's What I Want

I answered these as to what I want from DH. And to be honest, sometimes it depends on the mood I'm in! I'm an independent person who prefers to do things on my own, so needing or wanting a lot of feedback isn't what I really want from him.

Answers to quiz:
1. Ignore it entirely

2. Compliment me on how I look

3. Ignore it entirely

4. None of these answers worked for me. When I'm making progress you can't see how will you even know what to do??? I don't want to be asked how my efforts are going! That tends to annoy me. So for now I'll pass on this one.

5. Tell me your proud of my current efforts.

Day 8: Help Me, Please

I've gotten good at this one. I just tell DH what I need and don't need and he's pretty good at doing it. He knew not to buy me candy for Valentine's Day as I'm working to cut out sugar, for example.

He knows not to leave junk food where I can see it!

Day 6 Protect your program

I love this one! Now I need to remember to use the phrase "not just yet" when I'm in situations where it is needed.

Don't discuss your diet: I learned this one a long time ago. No one really cares what diet you are doing so don't bore them with the details!

Day 5 Magic Journal

I used to try to keep a journal but it went, like many things, by the wayside.
Which is why I decided to use this forum to get back in the journal habit. I hope to use this process to help my understand when and why I get the impulse to eat and decide whether I really need to eat or if it is just an emotional response.

Day 4 Boundaries, not diets

My narrow road:
Tracking food
Exercise
Making good food choices

My wider road:
Skipping exercise
Food choices are not as good, sometimes due to limited options (eating out at someone's house, etc), sometimes due to my choice
Not tracking food

Today was a "wider road" day. Road trip to my daughters 2.5 hours away: totally off my normal diet, only managed 10 minutes of exercise. It's one day out of a week, though, and those days will happen. It was about DH and me going to help DD plant a small garden at her house and she treated us to lunch. A day to be remembered for the good time.

Tomorrow I'll be back to the narrow road!

Day 3: Do it anyway

This is one I am constantly working on.

Exercise: I often find excuses to not exercise! But since summer I have overcome this one.

Tracking food: I was doing well tracking food using Myfitnesspal, the app, and then got a pop up ad on my iPhone I liked their food database better than Sparks or Fitbits but that popup ad made me mad! The only way to get out of it was to close the app. So I deleted the app after checking on the message boards and seeing others had complained about the same problem.

So tracking food fell by the wayside. I need to just do it!

I do best when I list on SP the night before or first thing in the morning, what I plan to eat and print it out and keep it with me. Also prep what can be prepped ahead and handy for eating / snacking.

Day 2: Interested or Committed

I'm committed but I slip at times. I was intereted for years and would try different diets and soon go back to my old ways. I'd sign up at a gym and then stop going.

Now I'm committed. There are different levels of committment though. I'm not 100% committed yet. I still have weak moments, I still have days where I don't want to exercise. I still have days where that inner voice wants me to go get some junk food. But I know my health depends on me staying committed. It's a day to day struggle at times. Other times it's not so hard. But then, life is that way, isn't it?

I used to eat a lot of processed foods but now I am cutting down on them. This is a work in progress. No more frozen dinners is just about completed.

I used to make excuses to not exercise but now I exercise everyday even if it's just for 10 minutes.

I used to not plan ahead for my meals but now I am making a meal plan. This is a work in progress.

I used to eat too much but now I eat moderate portions at my main meals.

I used to eat when tired, bored, depressed or emotional but now I find other things to take the place of food. This is an area I still find I need to work on!!!



I'm sure there are more things I could add to this list, but this process is new to me!
