I haven't tried the exercise yet but will today. I'm taking my brother-in-law to his doctor appointment today and he usually wants to go to a buffet restaurant afterwards. I don't care for the place so I'm not too tempted by it. They do have baked chicken and a good salad bar. However, they have a dessert bar. It all looks good but not that great tasting. I may try the two bite exercise at the dessert bar. We'll see. Sweets are a big temptation for me. emoticon

Have you tried the suggested activity? I've never had success at this one (yet!) - even if I manage two bites, I find myself going back later to finish things off! Lots of people find that these 'two bites' are too risky to attempt. How is it for you? You might enjoy reading through the thread - here's the link:-

Day 15. First 2 bites

Never thought about this before. I've never been able to stop eating cake or pie but she's right that it's not always as good as I imagine it's going to be.

Day 14. Morning affects evening

I always eat breakfast. I got into the habit about 35 years ago when I started working the day shift at our hospital. Sometimes it was crazy busy and you couldn't count on getting lunch, so I had to have breakfast. Now I'm able to have a leisurely, filling breakfast and it's a nice start to the day. I'm trying to plan my afternoon snack better---a piece of fruit with a little cheese or peanut butter. Trying to plan not to be so busy at lunchtime as that is my downfall. If I skip lunch or eat it really late, then I tend to overeat.

It is easier to plan for having 'emergency' food lined up when you eat regularly most days. You're doing fine - well done for pulling out that Lean Cuisine the other night! Some people keep salad items ready-prepared in the fridge - that might be helpful to consider if you want to get more salad into your day.

Day#13. Oops I forgot to eat

I don't forget to eat often, but when I have skipped a meal it was a disaster. When I do finally eat it feels like I can't fill up. Now that I'm retired, most of the time I can eat on a regular schedule. There are days that are very busy and those are the days when I might skip meals. Those are the days when I give in and get fast food. I should plan ahead and have healthy food available that can be quickly prepared.

Day #12. Fuel or filler

Looked at what I ate today. Some of it was good fuel. Some of it was not really bad, but didn't satisfy me as much. When I eat plenty of non-starchy veggies, I'm not adding a lot of calories but I'm getting good nutrients. Came home late. Im glad I didn't stop by a fast food place, but I should have added a salad to the Lean Cuisine I took out of the freezer.

Keep moving!

Day #11. Two purposes of food

Sometimes I eat because I'm hungry. Sometimes I eat because it's food I love the taste of. Sometimes I eat because I'm restless or bored or with friends who are eating. So I want to narrow it down to fuel and flavor.

I think I need to slow down and think before I put food in my mouth. I need to plan ahead. Yesterday I was busy and on the run. I went a long time without eating and then all I could think about was food.

Keep moving!

Day#9. Here's what I want
Notice my efforts even if my results are not grand. I may not be losing much weight but I'm making changes. My daughter comments when she sees I'm drinking more water and fewer diet sofas and when I'm exercising more. (I worked on this but forgot to write it)

Day #10. Appreciate good support
Sometimes I think my daughter is spending too much on a gift for me and I say so. Her response is "just say thank you". I think when you fuss about the cost of a gift or blow off a compliment, it's a negative comment towards that person. So I'm trying to accept compliments and give more of them.

Keep moving!

Day #8. Help me please
I live alone. My best friend and support person is my daughter. She's very supportive and compliments me on my efforts--which is what I need. One friend used to always say "is that on your diet?" & that always made me feel like hiding and indulging in secret. So I just look to my daughter for the help I need.

Day#7. I can do it

I can do it because I'm a strong person and I've done other things that were difficult.
I can do it because I need to be healthy and I need to be in control.
I can do it because I won't let the negative thoughts take over. I will drown them out with "I can do it"

Day #6. Protect my program

Not too many "food pushers" around me since I retired. Someone was always bringing treats to the office--and I was a guilty party, too. I think that's a great idea to say "a little later" and it seems easier for others to accept than a definite NO THANKS.

I live alone now, so there's no one eating sweets or chips in front of me. The negative side of it is it's too easy to eat those things in secret. I protect my program by not having unhealthy foods in the house. I try to keep fruit, carrots, nuts, etc on hand for snacks.

Keep moving!

Hi Nancy

I don't know if you've found your way to the Lessons threads - but there are so many great ideas there about the different ways people use a 'magic notebook' kind of idea. Personally my 'magic notebook' is usually a note on my phone - and I just jot down some food craving I have (like chocolate) and then I will just leave it there until I can plan when/what/how to meet that craving.

I have a notebook I'll use. Not sure about it because it seems like it might make me think more about the food. But I'll try it. (And that food would be anything chocolate)

Day #4. Boundaries, not diets

Narrow road. Track food daily
10,000 steps
No processed foods, no fast food

Wide road. If I don't get 10,000 steps,don't be a couch potato
Processed food once in a while
If I'm on the run, and must get fast food, make a healthy choice

Keep moving!

Day #3 just do it anyway

Have been down with rotten cold but feeling better now. Still don't have my book but I expect it to arrive today. I read some of the comments about day#3 and it looks like you decide to do certain things even when you don't feel like it.

At least 30 minutes walking
Track my food
Stick to my DASH eating plan
Count my blessings

Since I was "under the weather" this week I didn't get in my exercise--so now I don't want to at all. I'm going to do it anyway. At least 30 minutes of walking.

Keep moving!

Day #1. I used to be that way, now I'm different.

I used to give up on exercise if I didn't want to go to the gym or on a long walk. Now I think even a little exercise is better than none.

I used to "comfort" myself with sweets, now I want to find a better way.

I used to diet for 3 or 4 days, then overeat. Now I am going to be more consistent.

Keep moving!
