I've tried that with raisins. My oldest step son does not like them so I would tell him these are mine, you cannot have them. No problem there, he avoids them like the plague. Course, they're only here 4 days a month so it's hard to have consistency when it's not the same thing at Mom's house. (Mom doesn't cook, a lot of prepackaged food there. They've learned that home cooked is better and while I don't cook as much as I should, they definatley appreciate it! As long as it's something they like...)

Looked at it through a child's eyes, and I saw these beautiful
Things that you never think about
Like the ocean, moonlight, stars and clouds"

The snake was cooked in foil over coals and was almost cooked to extinction. I ate it as a child at camp for punishment for disobeying the rules. My counselor was an American Indian and she meant business. Since then all the snakes in the Shawnee are protected.

When my son was small I would just offer him a variety of foods and allow him to eat them if he wanted to. When he got older I used reverse psychology. I told him certain foods, like beets and turnips, were for grown ups and that he would not like them. He was stubborn and decided he would prove me wrong. LOL. It worked out great for both of us. He is less picky than I am.

Mom said the snake tasted like chicken, it wasn't that bad. What was copperhead like?
How do you all get your kids to try new things? The rule in our house is you have to try it. An honest try. If you like it great, if not that's fine but the next time we have it, your trying a bite then too.

When I met DH, the boys would eat Prego spaghetti sauce on maccaroni noodles, Kraft Mac-n-Cheese, deli turkey on white bread, scrambled eggs, bacon or Eggos - Tree Top apple juice. Very brand specific with them. There may have been more but that's the general idea. The youngest had a dairy allergy that he's since outgrown so that left out a large portion of things like cheese or yogurt for calcium. The oldest fell of the growth chart years ago and is still very much undersized. He's 14 and just recently made 80 lbs. Because he does grow and is generally as healthy as an ox the doc isn't concerned. There were other issues at the time as well and the oldest used food as a control which didn't help the matter.
I remember all to well sitting there until bed time because I could not bring myself to gag down that last bite of liver or some other horrid thing that was plopped on my plate so I certainly don't do that to the kids. Our rule is they have to try 1 bite. If they like it great, if not OK but they have to give it an honest try.
I grew up thinking my folks would eat just about anything so for me who like you doesn't like tomatoes I felt like I was just unreasonable in what I didn't like. I think I'm more adventursome than my folks in what I'll eat now which is interesting although Mom did try rattlesnake when she was in Az this last winter.

I'm more finicky than my husband or son. All people have foods they don't like, often foods that other people love. My son doesn't like dill pickles or olives. My husband doesn't like rice. I don't like tomatoes.

I have met people who like very few foods though. My son had a friend who didn't like any vegetables. He ate a plain American cheese sandwich with the crusts trimmed off and a bunch of candy for lunch every day. He wouldn't even eat chocolate cake. LOL. There are too many kids that think vegetables are French Fries.

Actually many thin people are in poor health. I had tons of vitamin deficiencies when I was skinny and no immunity to communicable diseases. LOL.

That's what I'm thinking. I used to think I was a finicky eater - then I met my stepsons. Wow. They've gotten better through the years but it's still a real challenge to get them to try anything new. The youngest just discovered that lettuce is good on sandwichs and taco's. It was quite the moment! Course, their weight problem is being under weight. Built like their Dad, super lean. I worry about their nutrition intake vs volumn.

Sounds like a great plan. Ease them into it.

I'm planning on replacing 1/2 the potatoes w/cauliflower with the family this weekend. Not telling them, just doing it. We'll see if they notice. I'm trying to slip more veggies in where they don't know it's there.

Smashed Cauliflower with Cheese

1 large head cauliflower, cut into florets
3 cups chicken stock
4 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces
1 cup shredded white extra-sharp Vermont Cheddar

Place cauliflower in a medium shallow pot or pan. Add stock, cover and place pot over high heat. When liquid boils, reduce heat to simmer and cook covered 10 minutes. Remove cover, raise heat to medium high and allow the broth to reduce by half, 2 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons butter, cut into pieces and the cheeses and smash the cauliflower with a masher to the same consistency as desired for mashed potatoes. Season the cauliflower with black pepper, a pinch of salt and nutmeg.
