It's National Cholesterol Awareness Month. This month reminds us to pay attention to our cholesterol. Do you know your numbers: Your total, LDL (the bad stuff), HDL (the good stuff), and triglycerides? High cholesterol is a serious condition that increases your risk for heart disease. The higher your cholesterol number, the greater your risk of having a heart attack. Over 65 million Americans are affected by high cholesterol. You could have high cholesterol and not even know; that is why it is important to be screened regularly. Everyone age 20 and older should have their cholesterol levels measured at least once every five years. Talk to your doctor about how often you should be screened. It is best to have a fasting blood test called a "full lipid panel."

Fortunately, after a very short time, you will see cravings and fatigue diminish. You can go "cold turkey" or experts suggest attacking on one meal at a time and achieving success slowly. Either way the goal should be to cut "added sugars", and this does not include fresh fruit. Set Learning Goals. There are two different types of goals: performance goals (like exercising five times a week to lose 15 pounds) and learning goals (discovering how to stay consistently fit for life). Most of us set performance goals, especially when we think about exercise and weight loss. Research in the field of education has found that learning goals are more motivational. When your goal is to learn, you are naturally curious and interested and want to pay attention when challenges arise. This keeps you invested over the long-term-because there is always something new to learn. With a performance goal, willpower dips after you meet a performance goal, like finishing a 10K. Surprisingly Sugary. Here are 8 sneaky sources of sugar in otherwise good-for-you foods. Yogurt is healthy as long as you stick to plain yogurt varieties. Pay attention to granola bars and avoid "refined" sugars (unrefined sugars from added fruit such as dates are ok). Choose "no sugar added" pasta sauces and peanut butter (avoiding childhood favorites such as Prego, Jif and Skippy). Have your coffee plain and add your own sugar that fits into your calorie count that day. Skip flavored water drinks and stick to plain water. And, as always, use olive oil and balsamic vinegar for salad dressings or skip them all together and add flavor with seasonings.

Fossilized Water Recommendations. According to Stavros Kavouras, Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Arkansas who studies hydration, the eight-glasses rule is arbitrary. Depending on your activity level, diet, age, and climate, you may need more or less than that exalted eight anyway. Rather than tracking your fluid consumption, count how many times you use the bathroom. When Kavouras and his team studied the number of daily bathroom visits that correlate with adequate hydration, they came up with... five. You can also judge the color of your urine. If it looks like lemonade or lighter, you can be worry free.

The Right Care. How do you care for a cut? Hydrogen peroxide? Rinse and bandage? Let it breathe until it scabs over? All wrong. Proper care is to first wash your hands, then flush the cut with water, add a dab of petroleum jelly to keep it moist so that it won't scar (OTC antibiotic ointments can cause skin irritations), and then apply a bandage.

E-cigarettes. It's true: certain levels of toxic chemicals are lower in e-cigarette vapor than tobacco smoke and one study found them to be less addictive than regular cigarettes, but powering up an e-cigarette doesn't come without any risk. In 2009, the FDA found a number of cancer-causing chemicals in e-cigarette solution, including one ingredient used in antifreeze, and more recently, one 2015 study found that in some cases, when heated at a high-temperature setting, electronic cigarettes can produce significantly higher levels of cancer-causing formaldehyde than traditional tobacco smoke. Some think that opting for a nicotine-free solution in an e-cigarette cartridge removes any risk to your lungs, but new research has found that both the nicotine and non-nicotine solutions damage the lungs, affecting the lining on a cellular level. So far, there is evidence that this change in the lining leads to lung injury and inflammation. E-cigarettes were introduced to the public less than 10 years ago, and until research has taken place over an extended period of time, we won't know just how harmful they are to our health. With more and more studies being released about the harmful chemicals found in e-cigarettes, why take the risk?

Cardio First. If you are looking to get those 6-pack abs, the first order of business is to get rid of any midsection fat and the only way to do that is to increase your cardio! You can do abs exercises all day but your beautifully toned abs will never get a chance to shine if they are buried under belly fat. Just Breathe. When you feel angry, stressed, or tense take a minute to just breathe. Deep, belly breaths can help get your emotions rebalanced and will send oxygen to your muscles to help improve performance. Try this: Sit up tall. Close your mouth, put your tongue on the roof of your mouth and draw a breath in through your nose. It should feel as if you are bringing air in from your throat. Fill your diaphragm with air. Hold for just a second, then slowly release your breath through your nose. Take 5-7 of these every time you feel the need.

Fourth of July Safety. If you're the one firing off fireworks, wear safety glasses and a hat to protect your head from hot debris. Keep a bucket of water, fire extinguisher and a hose close by in case something does go wrong. And, if you are firing off bottle rockets be sure to get the tube rather than using a real bottle.

A recent report from the World Health Organization found that unsafe listening practices like blasting the volume or attending loud concerts are putting 1 billion teens and adults under 35 at risk of hearing loss. Exposure to loud noises wears down the tiny sensory cells that line your inner ear and transmit sounds to your brain. Don't max out the volume. When listening to music on your headphones, keep your device below 80 percent of its maximum volume. If you listen on an iPhone, you can set a system-wide volume limit. Android apps such as Volume Lock Control (free) or Volume Locker (free) do the same. Take listening breaks. Longer periods of noise exposure cause your hearing to deteriorate faster. Step outside at concerts or clubs when they're playing a song you don't like, and limit earbud sessions to 90 minutes or less. Stay away from speakers. Take your place at the back of a room or use earplugs.

A Twist on the Traditional Pushup. If you want to engage even more muscles and challenge yourself to achieve that next fitness level for upper body strength, try diamond pushups. Start in plank position with hands positioned underneath your chest with thumbs and forefingers together in a diamond shape. Engage your core, slowly bend elbows, keeping them close to body as you lower your chest and chin toward the floor with control. Re-extend arms, pressing back up to starting position. Do 12-15 reps and complete one more full set.

Don't Focus on Deprivation. According to experts, anytime you deprive yourself of food, or of anything else for that matter, and you are consciously depriving yourself, you end up wanting what you can't have! Shift your mindset away from "sacrifice" and move it to celebrating the fact that you're cultivating a healthier, happier, more energized life.

Turmeric. Evidence has been mounting that shows the health benefits of Turmeric, the brightly colored cousin of ginger. May Day. Today is the traditional giving of the basket of flowers left anonymously on a doorstep. Keep tradition alive. Grab a flower or two and make someone's day by leaving a flower(s) at their front door, on the floor to the entrance to their office, on their desk, in a locker or anyplace that will be a pleasant surprise. Making someone else happy makes your heart happy, too.

Worth Crying Over. Although a medium onion only has 2 grams of fiber, it is they type of fiber that is very important. Onions have inulin, a water-soluble fiber that helps lower cholesterol and promotes regularity. Sauté onions with other vegetables to add flavor without adding calories.

Moves at Home - No Equipment Required. The Perfect Squat. Go low: Drive butt back (as though sitting on a chair), keeping thighs parallel to floor and knees over toes. On Strike. Stand with feet hip-width apart, arms at sides. Do a reverse lunge with right leg. Press through left leg to return to standing as you thrust right knee toward chest. Return to lunge. Repeat for 15 seconds. Switch sides; repeat. Calf Carver. Raise right knee to hip level, toes pointed, hands behind head. Contract abs as you lift left heel as high as you can off floor, balancing on ball of foot (as shown). Hold for 3 seconds, then lower heel for 1 rep. Do 15 reps. Switch legs; repeat.
