I do have hypothyroid and am on meds for it, thank you, I'll get the book! Doctors seem to ignore this, and really don't care much as far as weight gain??

Hi,

I just began reading a book called the Thyroid Diet Revolution. Mary Shomon discusses the role the thyroid plays in weight loss. It is true that if you eat too little, you will not lose weight, and I believe you are carefully tracking and measuring your food and exercise (you have to eat more if you work out more). However, if your thyroid is too low, you can also gain weight. Consider getting this inexpensive book and talking with your doctor.

thank you! I am a little obsessive with the scale.............but without it, I'd be in big trouble. Some days I feel like I've really lost, only to get on the scale and see that I've gained! bummer! I don't have a lot to lose and it's a real battle.........I've up and down with 5 lbs for a long time now. emoticon

You might not be eating enough. I know it sounds weird, but if you are not eating enough, your body will hold on tight! Figure out what your BMR is (Base Metabolic Rate) and eat at least that many calories. If you are active, you can eat more. BMR is how many calories you burn if you were in a coma.

Hope this helps!!

I only use weight watchers e-tools, but I am wondering if the caloric values assigned by sparkpeople might be too high?

Can you show me your calorie/meal intake for today and/or the past few days? Without knowing what you are eating it's impossible for me to figure out what the problem is.

yes, been measuring and going by sparkpeople entries for calorie intake. Have belonged to WW for close to 2 yrs now, a liftetime member, but am over goal by 4lbs, so dropped my etools, hence the reason for joining sparkpeople, to keep track and count calories. Nothing seems to be working lately?

Hi! Are you weighing and measuring EVERYTHING you eat and keeping a written record of this information? I am very good at analyzing food trackers since I have successfully maintained a 35 pound weight loss for over two years, and I would be more than happy to look at your daily food tracker. As a side note, are you eating lots of fiber rich fruits and veggies?

Hi Dianne, I'm right there with you! This was my first week and I worked out 5 days this week, been a little over around 1300 everyday (except two bad days) and I haven't seen any loss. I have a lot to lose, so I expected a change the first week. My suggestion is to keep doing what you are doing and put the scale away- it's not just about pounds lost. I know for myself I feel more energy the days I workout and I notice my face a little thinner so I know something is working even if the stubborn scale refuses to cooperate with me, lol.

wow Dianne I totally sympathize with you, I've been there. Just keep on trying to follow your eating plan and don't beat yourself up over the gain. there could be lots of reasons why you gained. I know about the obsessing about food, it gets better once you get into the groove. Give your body time to adjust to the knew way of eating. Also, if you're exercising a lot you may need to bump up your protein. Hang in there girl, you're not alone.

don't mean to be a whiner......BUT!!! Since starting sparkpeople 4 weeks ago, hv gained 3 lbs! Seems all I do is think about and obsess about food!

Now I know it's not sparkpeople's fault, so not saying that......but how to get past it? I have only gone over 1200 cal on 4 days out of the weeks I've been here.......????

It's a puzzlement, don't know where to go from here other than to cut back from the 1100-1200 calories?????
