Ya'll are busy posting! I do read all the posts, but don't always comment.

I hope you all have a very happy New Year! I am looking forward to the new possibilities.

I have been feeling better and lost another pound today. BP a bit high and BG normal. I see the doc on the 10th.

Do you have a New Year's tradition where you live? In Texas we eat black eyed peas. I put peppers in mine. They say it is for good luck, I don't believe in luck, but I eat the black eyed peas anyway.

New year time to make a new start make a clean slate and walk a good road forward. I am starting the day fasting and binge free. I am looking forward to getting and staying on track well at least 80% of the time. Lol. I am not going to let emotions play a part in if when and what I eat. I will use other ways to soothe myself

Happy New Year, everyone!

Ruth, I suspect your not remembering the lady from those years ago is more of common interests than age. You two probably weren't in the same circles and wouldn't have noticed someone outside those circles. Your great-grandsons are cute; they look about the same age as my grandsons (7 & 10). I'm glad your daughter-in-law's family make sure you're part of the family after the death of your son. Not all families handle that well.

Dennis, I'm envious of your neighbors who get to partake of your dinners.

No special plans for 2020 except for everything related to moving to my daughter's city. The first year is always busy with establishing new roots, doctors and such, plus learning the bus routes since I don't have a car. I'm rather excited about it.

Happy 2020 everyone!

Did not expect last night to be anything but tiring and wanting to go to bed earlier than 12.

At dinner I met met my sister's high school girlfriend's step sister. We talked and discovered we had attended the same school, then discovered we were in the same class, then discovered we were in the same home rooms all throughout junior and senior high school. Now here's the sad part, I didn't remember her and she didn't remember me. Yes we are really getting THAT old.

My mission this week is to find my old junior and senior high year books and look her up and see if I can remember her. . Has this or something similar happened to you?

Later in the evening we went to the home of my sister's farmhouse neighbor....to meet more neighbors from her small little village. The home has pretty much been preserved as it was when the present owner's grandfather, the Croatian transplanted Bucks County artist Maximilian Vanka lived there in the last century, It is a stone house with random width floors, fireplaces in every room, and oozing of charm and filled with esoteric works of art, all lovingly preserved by his granddaughter.. Artists tend to be collectors of things of great interest, beautiful, common and ugly. Those objects become props in a painting, if not the subject of a still life. Fascinating place to visit, like going into a museum alive with wonder.

Anderson Cooper came in to the living room shortly before midnight to help us count down the old and new year. After the proverbial champagne toasts in plastic flutes that did not clink people started heading out, no doubt so they wouldn't miss a second of the boring-est day on television of parades and football games.

Because holidays always sneak up on me and I don't plan very well for them I started inviting people to a pork and sauerkraut New Year's dinner yesterday. Four or five folks who also had no plans will join me this afternoon at 4:30.

So how did you celebrate the New Year?

Ruth, my biggest milestone was not planned. When called to return to work for a couple of months, to help my former company with a construction project I was able to "get up to speed" rather quickly and perform to my owner's expectations... and make a couple of buck to spend on upgrades to our Tucson home.

On the other hand, my golf game is showing my age and I am struggling trying to make my game "respectable".

Have a great start to the 2020's decade. If we are all hear at the end, it would be great!

Hi All - Just checked through the posts but won't respond to everything. I was indeed busy yesterday making pizza dough, grating cheese, getting in probably my only workout for the week and I'm sure various other items of Drifters business ( like a reminder for next weekls practice). Last night I was tired! I did feel better yesterday (thanks Sue!) - maybe because I had to?
Ruth I do tend to reuse the same passwords but do have a book to write down anuthing conneced to my computer. Didn't even lock my suitcase on our flight overseas and my suitcase was randomly inspeceted by Transport Canada as I discovered when I opened it up in London. If they can't open it, then they just break the lock. I have a dial lock on my case and we had external locks too but Hubby wasn't sure if they were TC approved so we chose not to use them rather than have damaged luggage.
Made it up to mom's this afternoon. There was some light snow at home and the drive was mostly sloppy as we encountered a bit of snow along the way. Probably brought half our kitchen with us - or so it seemed as we brought all the fixings for pizza (dough, sauce, toppings) chicken pot pie, soup, whatever baking was still hanging around the house, snacks etc. Stopped on the way to pick up wine to toast in the new year, salad for supper and hot chocolate for my sister who did not go to visit her son but sent her hubby. She had a fall down the basment stairs the other day and is a bit banged up including a very sore foot. She didn't want to deal with all the stairs at her son's home but insisted my BIL still go. Shortly we'll pop open one of the bottles of wine that we purchased to ring in the New Year.

Linda - Hubby is a big Star Wars fan and our son saw the movie the day it came out. He always purchases his tickets ahead of time for the opening day, Hubby and I saw the first Star Wars movie when we were in a small city about an hour from here (mom's) the summer we were dating. It was a hot day and we wanted to escape the heat so went to the theatre which of course was air conditioned. Star Wars was playing! I don't mind the movies but the do seem to be all much the same so I can take them of leave them but hubby wiell watch them pretty much anytime they're on TV and that has been frequently enough lately! Hope you enjoy the "last" episode. I'm sure hubby will get to the theatre soon enough to watch it on his own.

Happy New Year everyone! Talk to you again soon - or next year! emoticon emoticon

I have s busy day planned. I am going to the bank, pay rent, go to a doc appointment and go to the drug store. In there some where I am picking up free birthday treats of a sandwich at the bagel store and a drink st Starbucks. I have a cup cake that will be waiting for me at home from the supermarket bakery. It is not one of the fancy ones but it looks yummy.

As long as there is a demand for Star Wars, and George Lucas and his descendants are willing to allow it (for a fee, of course) it will continue. It's easier than imagining something new, I guess.

Dennis, I am sure you are correct. I don't think Star Wars will ever actually end.

Ruth, cute kids!

This year, I have learned to be more supportive of dh. I rely on him for too much. Since he lost both parents, I have thought about this a lot. It was a rough year.

Glad your knees are better Ruth. Nell, how is your mom today?

Hi Ruth! I haven't been on Spark People lately, but this is the start of a new year and I need to lose 16 lbs. I am sorry to hear about the loss of your son and your problems with your knees. Gary died in 2015 and I have moved to Newark, OH to be close to my children and grandchildren. I remember the trip to Philadelphia and meeting you. I have a friend who just moved there with her husband. I hope to visit them sometime soon. I hope you have a wonderful 2020 and the knees keep improving. emoticon

It's the last day of the year. What have I accomplished?

I began the year with osteoarthritis, did all the tests, PT, doctor's visits, some new vitamins, a hospital visit, more doctor's visits, bowing out of exercise. In October after much research I decided upon stem cell injections in my knees instead of the traditional knee replacement surgery. For the most part (90 %) I am pain free, have begun recumbent bicycle exercises 6 days a week, chair yoga and will begin walking again in the new year. So this has been a year of pain and recovery. Being able to lie down and sleep without pain has been a game changer.

What have I learned? Well, this is a hard one to admit. My mind may think I'm 25 years old, but my body knows differently. I am really trying to sync my mind and body and be realistic about it. I am making the sacrifice of not skiing this year for the knees, but I will be back on those slopes with a 77 year mind set next year.

I did not stray too far out of my comfort zone this year, with one exception (asking a guy out ) but I know I am capable of trying new things and will set some small goals to accomplish that have not been on my horizon.

I have been blessed by a daughter-in-law and step family that have embraced me after my son died two years ago. Their acceptance and compassion have been amazing in helping me to recover from the great sadness of that death. They are a new reason to live.

And then there is Nurturing in the garden. I am thankful to the creator for the innate beauty of flowers and the joy their growing and blossoming brings to the soul. And to the deer, those creatures of nature that bring me so much pleasure. We are all bound to nature, however we practice it.

What have been your milestones this year?

Ruth - nice looking kids..... someone is taking care of them quite well!

Nell, you are a good daughter.

Linda, enjoy your movie. It is the last movie in this Star Wars "story". I am very sure that Disney will start another triple trilogy that will capture our undivided attention to see Good vs. Evil battle on in a future Star Wars setting.

I am in charge of the Tucson based New Year's Eve dinner at our home tonight. The main feature will be my deep fried spare ribs..... and plenty of libations.

Today I had to make two trips to the supermarket because they had not put my bag of frozen food in my cart. I didnt know it until I got home and was putting everything away. And of course it was my Healthy Choice steamer bowls that I love so much and have them on my fasting days like today.

Just got in from some shopping, it's raining and a miserable day to be out in parking lots. I didn't find what I wanted for Mom at Walmart, so I'll hit the container store after lunch. There is a Starbucks attached so that's always a good thing.

We got tickets to Star Wars in 3D for New Years Eve. Yes, I admit it, we like Star Wars and it is the last one.

I am looking for art teachers/classes. One keeps bugging me, so they are out. Another is too expensive. I will try recommendations on Next Door and see what happens. I am now rusty as I have not done any painting in a very long time.

I have a Dr. appointment on Jan 10. Bad timing! I have to be good now, because I had too many sweets, all given to us by neighbors.

Have a great day!

I took a trip over to New Jersey to go to the UU in Washington Crossing. The program was lay led this morning but interesting even to a newcomer.

Once home I tried to open my suitcase which TSA had locked when it was inspected. I haven't had the key,nor did I remember the digital code. After about a half hour on line with various methods of suitcase code hacking I began going through the birthdays of all my relatives until I found the right one! Do you ever forget the passwords and code numbers on items or websites? Do you write them down? Do you use the same code for everything?. I use the same password for all the websites that do not contain sensitive information, Birthday Alarm, for example. For bank accounts and financial institutions I have a password and username book with many crossed out entries.

I am happy to report that I continued going to the gym and got in thirty minutes (about 4.3 miles) on the recumbent bike while away, with the exception of Christmas Day when the gym was closed. I went to one gym today and it was closed so had to drive to the other, farther away. The knees seem to like the exercise and the movement gets the synovial fluids going. Maybe, if so inclined, I will do a You Tube chair yoga video tonight.

Nell - Your mom is certainly having her problems. Hope that it all soon passes. The alternative to the walker would be a wheelchair but I'm sure you don't want to go there unless there is no other option. Much better for here if she can keep walking on her own with the walker.

Linda - It is hard going through all the photos. Hubby went through many of the ones that came from his mom's place but many of them had come from her mother and he really didn't know who many of the people were in the pics. MIL kept virtually everything too and I'm sure that there were a lot of things that hubby's brother and his wife tossed as they would have no sentimental value for them.

Dennis - I think that it was colder in your neck of the woods than here! emoticon
At least I don't think we would have been much colder last night - temp is 0 or 32 F today here.

Still not feeling great today. Seems to be more of what I had a couple of weeks ago - headache, sinus congestion and general lack of energy. Didn't even consider going to church - just watched online. Nice to have the option. Watching some NFL ball here. I'm probably a bit crazy but I started another sweater last night for me - a top down cardigan pattern that I knit with different yarn last year about this time but didn't like in that particular yarn and colour so it was taken apart and re-worked in a different pattern which I wear frequently. I've had many compliments on it. I decided that I'd still knit the top down pattern but in navy and with a different yarn. I've had the yarn for at least a couple of months - ordered it through the yard/hobby store that my friend owns. She no longer is carrying the yard - it comes in 400 g balls but will order it as long as the person wanting the yard will take two balls - exactly what I need (with some left over of course) to make a sweater for me. I used it for a sweater for me a couple of years ago (in a different colour) and also one for my grandson. It's a simpler knit that the sweater that I'm doing with my yarn from England as that one has three colours. If I don't feel like battling with three balls of yarn then I have an option to work on. Right now I don't feel like working with three colours!
Very dull here today - temp around freezing and we've had some rain - at least I think it's just been rain and not freezing rain but freezing rain is still a possibilty between now and tomorrow. Glad that we aren't planning to travel until Tuesday when hopefully whatever mess we might get is cleared up.

Take care everyone!

Nell, I hope your Mom gets better soon.

Linda, old photos are always a big project but they're worth it.

Ruth, I'm glad your trip went well. I'm not surprised the dining car was stopped; on my few trips, I never saw a lot of people using it so it was probably losing money. I hope the deer come back once they realize their usual human is home. As for a consignment shop, I don't have anything worth the hassle so if I'm not using it, it goes to goodwill. I had relinquished the good stuff 10 years ago.

I do use my desktop for most of my banking as I use ESET for my virus/firewall protection and it has an extra encryption feature for banking and credit cards. I just started using my phone for depositing checks but that's all as I'm still not very comfortable using the phone for finanaces.

Dennis, that's cold by any name! Hope your gardens hold up.

Nell, worried about your mom.

We packed photos yesterday for 4 hours and more to go! We put them in slide lock bags and boxes. We also threw away cards and letters. She kept them all, every one ever sent to her. We have to bring them back to our house because we stopped the trash service there. We put them in recycle bin. No problem with identity theft for MIL and FIL. It is always hard being there. About 4 hours is all we can take. Dh said he did not want to throw the photos away, he and his sis will take them and go through in their leisure time.

Our ride home was enjoyable, we drove in rain. We both actually like storms and it was just a light rain.

Today I am still in PJ's and got up late.

I don't use phone for banking either, Ruth.

R Sue, I hope you get to feeling better.

I am having allergies. Something must have blown in with the front we had yesterday.

Mom fell again this morning, so she won't be going anywhere today. She needs help walking on her walker today, she says she can't feel her legs. I hope this passes like her other aches and pains, but we'll see.

I do not use my phone for banking. I have a Pay Pal account and would be prepared to use it in an emergency situation. Most of my purchases are by a single credit card. We track our purchases with a budget program feature on the account. I am the watchdog. It would be easy to spot a hack.

27 F this morning. Glad I protected some sensitive plants with tarps last night.

My brother is taking Mom out to a movie today, like he does most weekends. I don't know how he manages to find different movies, but she probably wouldn't know the difference. She sleeps through them anyway.

I don't lock my phone screen, too much trouble, so I don't have any financial connections on it. I do everything from my computer. Both can be hacked by someone who really wants to hack them. I just deposit checks at the bank, there are a bunch of bank branches all around here, both my bank and Mom's (I keep them separate). My bank has been bought so many times since I got my account there: Union First became First American became First Union became Wachovia became Wells Fargo, all in just 40 years. My grandmother banked at the same bank from when she got here in 1925 until her death in 1986. Now even that bank is gone.

Ruth - Glad that you got home safely and got some necessary "paper work" done on the train. Certainly helps to pass the time! I don't use my phone for banking - hubby does most of it anyway and uses the computer. The exception is using the app that allows us to deposit cheques (Canadians!) without running to the bank. That is done by taking a picture with the phone and transferring it somehow. I tried to get it set up on my phone several months ago but I'm not sure it's operational. I do visit a local credit union (no extra service fees as there's no branch for our bank in town) when I want a bit of cash. Most of the weight usually does disappear when I get back to a more regular eating routine but my initial weight gain (after losing over 60 lbs0 actually began when all the Christmas weight DID NOT leave two years ago. I'm going to have to really crack down in the new year to shed some weigh t - all the weight I didn't lose this year and a bit more that appeared! Seems to get tougher as I get a bit older.

Dennis - That sounds unseasonably cold for the southwest! Hope that the plants make it through unscathed although they should if they're covered up. We actaully saw a glimmer of sun for a while today - temps a bit above freezing - about 3 C (high 30s F I think) so the patches of bare ground on the front lawn grew bigger with that bit of sunshine helping out. Our temps will continue around the freezing mark for the next while.

Nell - Glad that your mom is okay. Facilites are going to inform you of anything I'm sure regardless of how minor it may seem to ensure they aren't accused of neglect. Hope that the new slippers work out well.

Feeling draggy today - trying to keep a cold at bay as i don't want to take it to mom's - and seem to have little motivation (energy seems low but maybe that's the motivatoin taking over) so haven't done much aside from a bit of laundry and watching a couple of college bowl games. Poor Oklahoma is being schooled by LSU and Iowa State didn't have much luck against Notre Dame - which will thrill my American SIL who has a brother who teaches (I think) at Notre Dame. We actually did NOT have turkey tonight - finished up all the leftovers (aside from the turkey) last night so it was on to something different!

The train trip was uneventful (Amtrak discontinued its dining car service Oct. 1) so that amenity is gone. I have not checked this out but was told by an Amtrak staffer that an airplane executive took over the helm of Amtrak to make it profitable,,,,seems like it will make it just as bad. I packed a ham sandwich and apple pie for the trip. This morning I was able to get coffee and a cinnamon bun at the snack bar,,,not the best choice, I know.

This afternoon I have opened and responded to a week's worth of mail and banking issues which I refuse to do on phone apps as I am afraid that I could lose my phone and my accounts could be wiped out. I will leave that for the computer.

With all this cyber insecurity and serial hackers finding vulnerabilities in software programs I am weary of banking by phone, but oddly enough not of banking on the computer. My sister refuses to do any online banking and always goes to the bank for cash or to deposit checks and pay her bills by check and mail. I am less afraid of losing my computer than my phone so there's my prehistoric reasoning.

Do You Use Your Phone for Banking??? What conveniences do you like about it?

Nell: Now that mom's nearer you are the go to person for every little need. You are a saint for the amount of time you spend taking care of her every need.

Linda: Glad your holiday was quiet as planned. Now, for more cleaning out of MIL's home.

Sue in Orilla: You'll get back to healthy eating patterns once the holidays are over.

Kathryn: Hope you get there too. I don't think I could ever follow a fasting program, even if only for 12 hours, as I would be into the candy or cookies as soon as no one was looking.

Sue in Seattle: I thought you would be cleaning out! It is Amazing at all the stuff we collect without even realizing it. If you have some really good items, why not take them to a consignment store?

Dennis: I experienced that same rain and cold in Georgia. Glad to get home where I know what to expect....cold, and I am prepared for it.

I keep looking out the window for the deer, I guess they thought I have abandoned them!

I went over to Mom's, she seemed back to normal. She just grinds it out on walker, it hurts to watch her trudge around. I got her moccasin slippers at DSW, and I ordered another pair of pajamas. I went to Target and to Kohl's thinking they would certainly have PJs, but they are all heavy fleece or sweatsuit jersey. At least Kohl's had some online that I can pick up at the store. I wonder why they can't ship anything to the store?

Nell, might she need x-rays?

Dennis we are supposed to have rain today and we need it and welcome it. It greens everything up. I did not tell everyone but I have had daffodils pop up in my back yard! They don't know what season it is.

Glad everyone made it through the holidays.

My eating test will be today, we are going to the country house to pack photos. Getting a late start. We will eat in restaurants.

Ruth, sounds like you are having a fun time.

Nell, oh dear, hope mom is OK. It is nice that you are near and can respond quickly. You will probably have to work through the new slippers with her for some time. Change is difficult, especially with someone who is challenged.

We have snow on our nearby peaks. Anything above 5,000 ft. got hit with several inches of snow. Over 2.5 ft. of snow has fallen on nearby Mt. Lemon (elev. 9,400 ft.)

More rain this morning here.... it should be the last of it for some time. There is a frost warning for tonight. Will need to get my potted plants under the covered patio and get the tarps out for our flowering landscape plantings. The forecast is for 29 F for the low.

My phone rang at 6:45 this morning, it was Mom's assisted living. She fell this morning, says she can't feel her legs. They have her in a wheelchair for the moment, but they told me to get her new slippers. Mom has always insisted she have the same type of hard mule slippers she has worn throughout my memory, but they aren't good for someone with gait issues. I'll have to be at DSW this morning when they open at 10 and try to find her moccasins, which are more amenable to someone who walks on a walker. I just hope she can still walk, that is the core of her life.

Would love to say that I haven't gained but unfortunately as soon as I eat much of anything like sweets or salty foods (and sometimes even when I am on track!) the scales take a jump! I know that much of it is bloating and water weight from eating more sugar than usual and at least some of it (hopefully most) will disappear when the treats disappear.

Safe travels Ruth! Sounds like you had a great time even if the weather wasn't as nice and warm as you expected.

Nell - Getting rid of the food is a good strategy. Unfortunately I didn't get rid of enough of ours although the kids did take some of the baking off my hands.

Dennis - Weather seems to be crazy all over the place! We are having above normal temps - today has been about mid 30s F or 2 C but it has been vrey dull most of the week. There was heavy fog for a short time this morning when I got up, This is more like West coast (Canadian that is) weather although it actually hasn't been rainy. I'd much rather have it a bit cooler and sunny - wouldn't feel any colder to me - I dont' like the dampness.

Sue - Moving is a good time to get rid of things we no longer need. We need to do a HUGE amount of editing before we ever comtemplate moving! Holidays are fun but you do have to get back to reality so you're ready for your move.

Actually made it down to the treadmill for a short workout this morning. This afternoon hubby and I went to Costco to pick up things we're running out of as well as a few things to take up to mom's. Not sure what we were thinking - the fridge and extra cupboard space are completely crammed but we were out of a few things that we like to purchase out there It will be better when the turkey is out of the fridge - and the rest of the left overs - and the things we'll take to mom's. I plan to make pizza dough (with the bread maker) and we'll make pizzas - something I've promised mom I'd do sometime and usually forget until it's too late to make the dough. Ended up at Wimpy's for lunch - like we don't have any food at home! emoticon emoticon However I haven't touched any baking today - will probably have a bit after supper which is likely to be another version of turkey! Don't mind it but three days is my limit.

Had a fun night last night partying with hubby and his friend. Watched a football game and a basketball game. I don't usual sit in there with them but last night I did. Both games were good. I over ate on microwave popcorn and the water weight is outrageous. Today is a fasting day and will be good and not over eat.

Three days this week with rain..... another today. Us in Tucson love it, it makes our desert POP with color and saves us $ on irrigation water. Our guests and tourist expected 70 F days filled with sun drenched, clear skies and mild night. Well, over average high for Dec. is 59 F and January's is 60 F.... with 40 F lows. So, you need to be prepared for 10 degrees cooler on both ends on some days. Does not meet expectations, but better than Detroit and Cleveland's 33 F highs and 15 F lows.

Will be getting the house ready for DS's return with his girlfriend from Minneapolis.

We have been playing games all week, from 20 Questions and ABC Countries of the World, to Trash, Hot Dice, Blackjack, Monopoly to Trivia. We are all very competitive and have different gambling and strategy skills. My GGS are really smart and it is hard to beat them in Language and knowledge games, but easy to beat them where luck is the main component of the game.
I will return to Philly tonight by train and get there in the morning.
Today we finally have some warm weather in Georgia, just when I am about to leave. Most of my warm weather clothes are going back home clean, albeit wrinkled from suitcase living. Alas.

I made it through Christmas at the same weight, too. Getting all the food out of the house is the only way I can do it.

I have seen double rainbows too, we have them here often.

We are supposed to have rain tomorrow. We need it.

Boxing day is not something that is a "thing" in Texas. I did go shopping to Ulta and Target. It was not too awful.

I found a citrus juicer for our lemons. Dh used it last night and got 3 cups of juice from the lemons! Today I will make lemonade. I make the type that you boil the water and dissolve the sugar. Dh loves the lemonade.

I made it through the holidays without gaining. I still need to lose a lot of weight, however.

I am also searching for art classes.

Hi all! Sounds like everyone had a good Christmas. Those are great pics Dennis. We have seen double rainbows - happened while driving in the States I think somewhere in Illinois (but can't quite remember - think we were heading to Rockport). Anyway they are quite the sight and probably not too common in Tuscon by the sounds of things.

Linda - We had a vegetarian chili for Christmas Eve supper which hubby put together and everyone enjoyed. He used some plant based ground "meat' for it. In fact we just finished it off - need to get things out of our over-stuffed refrigerator.

Ruth -Most stores up here will not do exchanges on Boxing Day - it's usually TOO crazy with bargain hunters looking for Boxing Day deals. Hope you were successful in getting the right size. Glad that you've been able to keep up with some workouts too. Mine have gone down the tube this week but i should manage to make it to the treadmill tomorrow.

Kathryn - It's easy to eat too much of the wrong things - my scales aren't being friendly either but they will go down again when I am back to "normal" eating.

We had fun - especially Christmas Eve when raucaus games of UNO (Canadian style) were taking place mainly with my two kids and SIL and me (after our grandson went to bed). SIL was doing his best to be nice to me -especially when his supply of shortbread was threatened! We got in a few rounds today before the kids left and hubby finally decided to join in. Oh and Canadian-style is really not too much different from any other game - we just apologize to those beside us when we play a "nasty card that has them picking up extras or missing a turn! It's a great family game that even our grandson can play. Our son is a big board and card game fan and usually brings activities with him.
Everyone seemed happy with their gifts. Hubby liked the concert tickets that I got for him and then we got tickets to a Ringo Starr concert for later in the spring from "the kids'! Yesterday seemed devoted to a lot of basketball watching - not my preference. I knew they'd want to watch the Rapters game but didn't expect they'd be watching another two games (at least) afterwards. Our son was great to help with the cleanup - most went in the dishwasher anyway but we had a few things to wash up. Managed to cram all of the left overs in the fridge. Tonight hubby and I will have "Christmas dinner part two"! The kids also relieved us of a good bit of the baking - less for hubby and I to ingest although there's still plenty.
Just working on washing up the Christmas dinner table cloth (red wine stain and cranberry sauce which both disappeared) and as well as the dishclothes and tea towels - some of which have been soaked in a weak bleach solution. The other table cloths and placemats will get washed in a couple of days.

Nell - Glad that the health insurance came through.

It was a two pound box for us to share and we just about had the same amount I was counting it one for me one for him but on the second day I think he got more not that I am complaining just stating a fact. I don't think I will do that again as we really ate to much and both of us did not eat proper meals. I cooked no dinner last night.

Wow Dennis, what a photo!
I have never seen two rainbows together but one of DS's friends mentioned that he saw a double rainbow on the day DS died.
Nell, glad the kids helped put away the tables and chairs in the basement. But sorry you got stuck with all the cleanup. Perhaps in the future you can designate a clean up crew before the leave the table. Or ( and I know you will not like this idea) ask one of the kids or DIL to host Xmas 2020. Nice, Dennis. Seems like we all had a nice Christmas.

Angling, our family on the coast fishes all the time. They live right on Baffin Bay on the Texas coast. We love going there, but it was too much for us this year. Nice fish!

We are going to Shiner this weekend for a few hours to put photos in plastic bags and boxes. Dh went back to work today. I will be looking for a hand style juicer. I swear I used to have one, can't find it. Must have given it to Salvation Army at some point. We still have lemons and want to make juice. They are huge lemons grown in Shiner, TX.

Nice to hear about your Christmas's.

Here in Tucson, two hours after Christmas Day dawn the sun and some rain got together to give us a great visual present.... Santa's Super, Double Rainbow!

After sharing a two pound box of chocolates I dread getting on the scale, for the next two days I will fast. I have healthy choices steamer bowl to eat and today I also have a spinach salad. I will make it through the day. We have a VA caretaker coming. I hope it is the same girl as Tuesday. We asked her to be our regular caretaker and I hope it works out.

Christmas was the usual madhouse, but not as many gifts. Most of the kids wanted money to defray the cost of house repairs, so that was easy. The two still little grandkids were easily pleased with kid gifts. As always, I took a lot of photos, and as usual I'm not in any of them. The boys moved all the furniture back to the basement, but with kid meltdowns, they had to leave me to clean the kitchen. It was clean by 9:30 or so.

I didn't eat much, as usual. After days of cooking I just can't eat much. I kept out enough leftover roast beef for sandwiches tonight, every other morsel went home with kids. Mom was too tired to enjoy herself, she doesn't do well late in the day, and she doesn't recognize anyone except the 3 of us she sees all the time.

Today starts recovery! Merry Christmas!

We typically have a very small, quiet Christmas with family a day or two before or after. In-laws live 3-1/2 hours away. Kids are spread across the country. Although the 3 of them are in their forties, no spouses and no children, so it's not they typical gathering for people our age. We go fishing most years on Christmas Day. This year was no different.

Linda, I like your Christmas, particularly the tamales part. LOL We had plans to go to a Christmas Eve service, but didn't make it. The service started at 5 p.m. and we didn't finish golf until late. Sounds like your service was lovely.

Hubby and I had a nice Christmas. I surprised him last night with a box of candy and this morning with a new shaving kit from Santa. Santa brought me a watch my old one had died a few months ago and it is hard not knowing the time all the time.

PS. My granddaughter got me into her gym and have been cycling on the recumbent bike for 30 minute's each day. In the evening my daughter and I participate in a chair yoga exercise using YouTube videos. Is it because I am too busy to think about pain or has it all gone away? I think the stem cell injections are really beginning to show major improvement in my life. Bye,bye OA.

Merry (almost over) Christmas. My daughter granddaughter and great grandsons have been keeping me busy. The kids always want GG Ruth to play a game with them, or build a Lego toy. We play cards and hot dice when we're all together. The food has been plentiful, and really a treat because my Georgia branch ( displaced Okies) has grown up with different food traditions, and I am learning and tasting lots of differently prepared foods.
My DIL came up from Miami but had to go back on the 23rd for work. Her gift to me is a three day island get away in February.
Tomorrow is boxing day and I have to make a visit to the store for an exchange, then to the post office to mail her a present that got hidden behind the tree.
Sounds like you all had a nice holiday and will be resting up until the New Years onslaught.

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!

We are having a happy and peaceful time alone. We have been invited to family gatherings, but have to drive several hours and dh has been doing that most of the year. We wanted to be home.

Here in Texas in many households, tamales are a tradition at Christmas or Christmas eve. I made dh chili and had some tamales in the freezer for him, made by my in-laws caregiver. He enjoyed it. I made myself some plant based chili and it was good too. We went to church last evening and sang carols and had communion. It was so nice!

The surprise I have for dh today is pecan pie, his favorite.

I just got back from church, it was a glorious celebration. And not nearly as crowded as the next service will be. Only a few people had to stand at this one, at the late service the crowd spills into the narthex. A lot of cops are earning extra money managing traffic around all the big churches tonight.

You're right Nell - doing as much as possible before Christmas day makes it more enjoyable. We've even cooked the turkey a day ahead but aren't doing that this year. I'm waiting for my turnip to finish cooking and then my Christmas food prep will be done. Daughter SIL and grandson have departed for the day to go visit my mom. I know she'll enjoy that as they have few opportunites to get up to see her. Mild temps continue, there are a few patches on the ground but for the most part our Christmas will be whilte - and sunny - or mostly sunny!

Dennis - Sorry for the dreary skies but that's only important if you're going to be out and about. Of course it makes enjoying Christmas by the pool hard to do!

Thanks Judy. We have a vegetarian chili put together here to accommodate our son's vegetarian preferences. I'll leave the bacon out of the breakfast casserole that I'll put together later and we'll just have to cook it to have on the side tomorrow. Much as I would like to make it to church, it's unlikely as the service is a 6 and that's probably about the time we'll be eating. Not sure when our daughter and family will return or when our son will arrive.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! Enjoy your day however you will be spending it and whatever you'll be enjoying for your meal! emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Rain all day today with solid clouds thru tomorrow. So, our Christmas will be grey. Santa will need to use GPS tonight here in Tucson, visibility will be challenged.

We are now alone with Rabbit, our son's dog, while he is visiting his dad in Detroit and then his girlfriend and her family up in Minneapolis.... then her and he will be back to see us late on the 29th.

Have a safe and glorious Christmas Eve!

I did good on my fasting days and am back at my small goal weight again. Will eat with in reason today and not put the weight back on. I am fasting on Christmas day so making a nice grilled salmon dinner. Today getting a take out lunch to share with hubby. Am also going to go to the Goodwill to find him a surprise.

Nell - It's hard enough when we lose our parents to death - has to be so much harder to still see your mom physically but know that she is no longer relly "there". Take care.

Linda - The one thing I try very hard NOT to do is brave the stores 2-3 days before Christmas unless it's absolutely necessary and usually I can avoid it. It certainly makes it more bearable if people are in a holiday mood and not stressed out.

Thanks Sue! Good to have that done. And I meant to mention that my back has been much better since Saturday. A bit of linament and the back brace with keeps heat in, seem to have done the trick in getting rid of the back strain from the rowing machine.

Didn't get the beds made until this morning but I figured I'd have lots of time today. Jellied salad is done, fresh cranberry sauce has been made, some decluttering even got put on today's agenda. Anniversary dinner was Mary Brown's chicken and fries followed by a sampling of the baking. Hubby was out all afternoon and daughter and her hubby stopped at an outlet mall on the way here so everyone landed in just about the same time around 4 o'clock this afternoon. Now we're just relaxing (or I am) and watching the Raptors, Not sure how relaxing that is for our SIL who is a big fan or for hubby who has started following them this season,

Have a good evening everyone! I'll be trying to stay awake!

Dennis, sounds good to me! Our Christmas Day will be 70 degrees. Perfect weather in my book.

I braved the grocery store today. Actually everyone was in a good mood. It was delightful! I am now ready for Christmas!

Nell, yes, it is sad. The only saving grace is that she is not dealing with chronic pain from a deadly disease and has great family support. Your mom may see this Christmas thru the eyes of a young child..... amazing.

My brother took Mom out to a movie, he said she didn't have a bad tooth, but had a sore on her tongue like she'd bitten it, so maybe the Listerine I brought will help. The staff said she wouldn't eat anything, but I've bitten my tongue and it never kept me from eating, that's for sure. I went to see her this afternoon, but she couldn't tell me what the problem was, she kept putting her hands in her mouth to try to show me, like a 3 year old. Oh Mom. She's still with us in body, but Mom is gone. It's just so unutterably sad.

Okay Dennis - We'll see you next year for Christmas! emoticon emoticon emoticon Or maybe we can visit my BIL and SIL who will by then be settled in their new home in Fort Myers FL. Right now they're crammed into a 700 sq ft (approximately) apartment with two dogs (one large, one small) after selling their 6000 sq ft home in Ohio! I have to say that even being at our daughter's last year where Chrismas was green (but dreary) just didn't seem the same. Of course it was barely a white Christmas here. Temp was up around 2C (34-35 F) when I came home from church today and with the sun our it felt very warm - not quite shorts weather of course! Our daughter sent me a pic of the temps for the city for the next few days and it will be spring like down there. I think our snow will survive a couple more days of warmer temps but we'll see. It's supposed to be just below freezing by Wednesday.

Ruth - Everyone deserves a bit of pampering! Mani/Pedi sounds lovely! You seem to be having a good time even if your weather is dreary! Enjoy!!

Thanks Sue!

Good luck finding another caretake Kathryn.

Nell - hope that the tooth pain is temporary. The best you can do os try to make an appointment for the earliest possible date but so many offices do shut down over the holidays. However emergency services are often provided by some.

Well baking is done -and there were no mishaps with the cranberry loaves today. I'll wrap them up for the kids to take home. I even made the oatmeal/cranberry cookies too. No beds made up yet but I may do the spare room up this evening. Think I'll leave our grandson's bed until tomorrow morning as it involved pulling out the ancient sofa bed. It's okay for him to sleep on for now but is due to be replaced. I got hubby's gift wrapped, the anniversary gift bagged and the Santa bag stuffed last night. Not too much on the agenda for tomorrow - making the jellied salad is the main thing. Might do the turnip casserole but more likely will make it on Tuesday. The 'to-do' list is getting shorter and shorter!

Take care everyone! emoticon emoticon

It was a Mexican breakfast with corn tortillas and all the trimmings in this little corner of Georgia. Afterwards my granddaughter took me to the gym where I got in my recumbent bike exercises. We are now at my daughter's apartment, not quite getting ready for dinner, contemplating doing something about it and putting more stuff under the tree. The tree and the presents for 7 people takes up half the room of the small apartment. Is really comical but in a few days it will all be eaten, broken, or packed away, or who knows what.

Wishing you all a pleasant Sunday and a happy holiday season. PS, Dennis, I get that about the shorts at Christmas and sitting around the pool. Unfortunately here has been raining for two days and it has not been good pool or Beach weather. Oh well.

Dennis, have fun at your dinner!

R.Sue, Happy Anniversary!

Ruth, it sounds like you're definitely enjoying your trip.

Nell, dentists usually have their emergency backup on the voicemail message. Hopefully, it's a temporary pain.

Dennis I am with you in wanting to see the snow only on the peaks. I live in California and it is in the high 50 with light rain today. I will just be wearing a jeans jacket with emoticon when I go out for my Starbucks run today. I don't think I would go if I had to trug through snow on my walk.

Last night we had our friend Terry over and we had a Christmas candy party. It was fun but today will fast to repair the damage done to my weight loss.

Retired Sue: You should try it sometime; celebrating Christmas outdoors sitting next to the pool with shorts or a bathing suit on. It grows on you. The snow does not seem that necessary..... especially if you can look up at the mountains and see snow on the peaks. lol

I was a big time fan of winter. Even went to college at the northern most part of Michigan in the Upper Peninsula in Houghton/Hancock. A couple of my winters there we had well over 300 inches of snow. I was a skier and bought a student pass at our ski hill for $25 for the entire season (November to March). Then, for some reason, I got old and yearned for warmed, melted water in the ground.... .or hot tub. lol

A neighbor invited several of us in our cul-de-sac over for a holiday drink at 2 pm today. So, we will go over and join in the toast.... for about 30 min. Our dinner guest will be arriving at our home around 4 pm, so we won't be long.

Have a great Sunday everyone.

Oh, Nell... maybe aspirin or Tylenol will help you mom with the tooth pain? This being a holiday week makes it difficult.

Nell, the assisted living should have a list of Drs you can call.

Oh, no. I hope it is just phantom pain that will go away, Nell. I have had that.

Ruth, I am not busy with Christmas. I am done. We are looking forward to two quiet days together with some good food. T-Bone for dh and veggies for me. I did get him a pecan pie at the bakery, his favorite.

We were given some chocolate popcorn yesterday. How can you resist that? I had a few bites and asked dh to hide it.

I got a call from Mom's assisted living, she was complaining of a tooth ache. What am I supposed to do now? The dentist's office is closed most of the week for the holiday, I won't be able to get her in for at least a couple of weeks.

Happy Winter!!!

Winter arrived at 11:19 p.m. EST last night and the darkest time of the year is almost behind us with daylight starting to lengthen today - even if it's only for a few seconds at the beginning, pretty soon we'll be noticing it getting brighter in the evening - woohoo!!!

I am glad that you are all wearing yourself out getting ready for Christmas. I am being treated like a queen, my daughter-in-law is treating me like an invalid, I am having quite a good time. we Four women went out for manicures and pedicures and tonight we showed them all off at a new restaurant called 401 West.

We also hit some of the local stores to buy some stocking fillers and now I have enough for two stockings for everybody . I have no control oh, absolutely no control in the Dollar Tree store.

I also got in 30 minutes on stationary bike today at the Saint Mary's Naval Station Base gym. I will go as many times as they allow this civilian in. Have a great weekend.

I am wore out tonight and not done with laundry. Our caretaker quit and I had to do my supermarket run and all her chores. We start interviews next week.

Ruth - Glad that you had safe travels and can now enjoy time with family.

Dennis - Much as I enjoy warm weather and am not a fan of cold, Christmas without snow just doesn't quite feel like Christmas to me. Last year it was a green Christmas even here but this year should be white. Although we're in for a2-3 days of milder weather, I think we have enough snow that it will still be hanging around for Christmas day. Your dinner sounds very good - ENJOY! Ours will be turkey too - it's long enough since Thanksgiving up here but our pie choice is usually mincemeat instead of pumpkin.

Linda - And the mishaps (sort of) continue. Gingerbread is done and the other roll of fruit and nut cookies. Discovered when I went to roll the truffles that they were very gooey. Miscalculated on the amount of extra chocolate I needed to add with the extra sweetened condensed milk. I managed to roll them anyway but i think they'll need to reside in the refirgerator (if there's room) or my cooler front coat closet instead of being stored at room temperature. I've recalculated and made notes on my recipe for next year.

Carol - Yes the cookies are tempting and I won't resist but I only bake because the family will be here.

Happy to day that my "to-do" list is getting shorter and I'm pretty much on schedule. Sometimes it seems like there are so many things I want to get done and I'm not sure how it will all fit in but I stopped stressing about it years ago and everything important usually gets done. As well as the baking I had scheduled for today (and the laundry), I also got our grandson's snowsuit and books wrapped up as I finished his hat last night and ran it through a short wash first thing this morning. Hubby put the tree up and to his credit, decorated it and didn't ask me to help! I don't mind decorating the tree but I just didn't have time for it today. Tomorrow I need to get the beds made up for our daughter and family and I'll take another stab at some cranberry loaves and try VERY hard not to dump one in my oven again! emoticon I'm hoping to make it to church too so will really just have the afternoon. On the agenda tonight is getting hubby's gift wrapped as I was able to download and print the tickets before he got up this morning, I'll probably try to get his bag filled up - I don't wait for Christmas Eve if I don't have to. Oh and I'll get my hair washed and hopefully get some polish on my nails! Should manage that - as long as I can stay awake! Oh and did I mention that our anniversary is Monday? Found a silly gift for hubby when I was shopping and should get it ready along with his card.

Tomorrow is our Christmas celebration dinner. Our visiting son will be gone to Detroit and Minneapolis from the 24th to 29th so we invited the family next door to join DW, DS, DSIL, DBIL and the chef (me) for a festive dinner. Looks like we will have Turkey (did not have Turkey for Thanksgiving), Ham, Sweet Potatoes, Boiled Yukon's, Roasted Vegetables, Cranberry Relish, Butter Rolls, Dressing, Gravy, Honeydew/Cantaloupe/Pineapple, Sweet Kale Salad and various drink options. For desert Pumpkin Pie, Cherry Pie and cookies.... Later we will have various flavors of Hummers (ice cream shakes with sweet liquor). The forecast is for 71 degrees at dinner time and clear, sunny skies.... my kind of Christmas.
