The Greeks have always been known for their smelly feet, so in order to alieviate some of the stink, children were instructed to set their shoes out on new Year's Eve, with the hope that they would air out, or someone would steal them and the children would either go barefoot , al least until they were reshod. That is the honest truth and I will swear by it.

My Spark Buddy has lost more than 40 lbs. When I left in October she was well padded, but it has just melted off (she stopped taking some medicines that were causing her to gain). She is looking very good these days...now I will have to get serious about losing, and I have no meds to drop, so it might be hard work. Why is it we all want to lose weight but we don't want to work hard doing it?

Well, I'm off to eat some herring in the hopes that my bank balance will be plentiful in the new year. What do I eat to gain contentment? peace?

Happy New Year, Everyone!

At the continuing care place that my mother lives, there are a bunch of New Year's parties that people throw in their apartments, then a big community celebration in the common room. But at 10:00 the staff moves the hands of the big clock to midnight, they have a big countdown, then everyone goes back to their apartments and goes to bed. Sounds good to me!!

Thanks Vista. Our brains are going to be really working learning all this new information.
Jeanne, do you have any ancestors from Greece? I've always thought that would be a nice place to visit, but I'm not big on Greek food.

I am going to call it a night. It's been a long afternoon on the computer.

Found this on the Internet when I googled treats and shoes and New Year's Day. So here you are!

Gifts in Shoes - In Greece children leave their shoes by the fireside on New Year's Day, which, incidentally, is also the Festival of Saint Basil in Greece, with the hope that Saint Basil, who was famous for his kindness, will come and fill their shoes with gifts.

The only New Year's tradition in my family was bowl games. Years ago there were only 4: Sugar, Orange, Cotton and Rose, and they were all on New Year's Day. Now they have multiplied and are all branded out. I remember the Rose Bowl game of 1963, the first time the #1 and #2 college teams faced each other in a bowl game, and I remember how exciting it was. Since I still have my calendar from 1963, I know that USC ended up beating Wisconsin 42-37, despite an amazing 4th quarter rally by Wisconsin. And yes, football scores went onto my calendars back then. I was 13 and watching sports with my father was one of the things we loved.

Kay, maybe that "shoe out for a treat" tradition was made up by my mom in an effort to get all the leftover sweets out of the house. At any rate, it was fun when I was a child.

My siblings remember it, but none of them knows where it originated.

Jeanne, I don't think that I have heard of that tradition.
It is a saying that whatever you do on New Year's Day; that you will continue to do it. Some exercising will be a priority for me in the morning.
I have heard that if you eat greens on New Year's Day you will have good luck throughout the year.

When we arrived home from mother's house Christmas evening, I washed one load of clothes. Later I called her and told her we arrived home safe and sound. I mentioned that I had washed a load of clothes. She said that her mother told her not to do any chores on Christmas Day. My grandmother died before I was born, so I never knew her.

Wishing you all a very happy new year! Looking forward to this thread and all that it will contain in 2014.

We had a New Year tradition growing up. When we went to bed, we put out a shoe and in the morning there would be a prize of some sort (usually left over Christmas treats) in it. My mom always told us the baby new year left it there.

Have any of you ever heard of this tradition, and if so, do you have any idea where it originated? I did it for a while with my own kids when they were small, but it has all but disappeared from our family now.

Sandra, I just realized I do not have my name at the bottom of my posts. I'll have to remedy that (if I can find that link). It is the same as my user name (without the 229) however.

Chow Chow is a type of relish that is not hot. It just seasoning for some people and very common here. One of my SILs brought 2 types of chow chow for my husband's Christmas dinner. She had grown turnip greens at her condo. The greens were good, but I don't use the chow chow.

The first person to call at your home after midnight on new years eve was called a first footer and the tradition was for them to bring the gift of a piece of bread and a small piece of coal to ensure you had food and heat throughout the year.
This tradition has mostly died out,but I think they still have it in Scotland.
By the way what is chow chow?

Maybe this is an old German or Swiss tradition, but traditionally we down pickled herring on New Year's Eve to assure that we will have money in the new year. New Year's day the meal is usually roast pork (sometimes with hot dogs) and sauerkraut, and, mashed potatoes .My late ex-husband was from Missouri-Oklahoma and they always had black-eyed peas. In reality, it doesn't matter one whit what you eat before or after New Year's day, as food cannot change your condition in life, only you can do that with a goal and a determination to reach it. Food, however, can be a comfort in times of stress, but adding the extra pounds will cause more stress. Best to exercise and eat wisely. Adhere to your traditions if it gives you peace of mind, or create a new tradition (perhaps walking X miles in the park before settling in on repasts and bowl games) that will help you achieve your goals.

Today I'm processing laundry, visiting my Spark Buddy in the afternoon, and shooting off boomerang glow sticks after dark.

Ginny, it's good to hear from you. Michigan has had some cold weather. Do you know about your island? I bet you are glad to be back in Georgia, although it has rained a good bit.

I'm eating breakfast in front of the computer which is not a good thing to do, but I will be running errands later.

Everyone, have a good day and stay warm.

Happy New Year Team!
I'm trying to get myself back into fitness for "14!" I know that I'll need support from this wonderful group to do it.
Kay, I see that you are getting your lucky new year menu ready. We have been invited to our neighbors' for the new year dinner and I can't wait. I just love that southern tradition of the start to the new year. My neighbor always has her mother's menu of collards, (with the hot sauce, of course), black eyed peas, roast pork, and corn muffins. It is always delicious!
Have a great New Year's Day. I'm going to try to check in before the Rose Bowl Game. I've always been a Michigan State fan so I'm happy to see that the Spartans will be there.

Toni, I don't eat the chow chow, but my husband does. We usually have ham also, but we just had ham also. I am going to put my dried back-eyed peas in water today so they will be ready for tomorrow. I do have some left over ham for seasonings. My turnip greens are frozen, but I'll seasoned them. The meat is still in question.

I just finished an aerobics/kickboxing DVD, and I'm tired. Later this morning we are going to run some errands. My son gave me a very pretty sweater for one of my gifts, and it's not a petite. The sleeves are too long, so I'm going to try to get another one just like it. It's navy, and it's difficult to find a pretty navy. That color has almost disappeared here.

Kay, there are only going to be 2 of us for New Year's Day meal at our house, too. We'll be having pork chops, greens, black-eyed peas and corn bread. We usually have ham, but we've had so much over the holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) that I didn't think I could stand any more! Do you eat chow chow on your peas?

Thanks for the welcome! And thank to Kay for the nice note.

My name is Toni. I live in Hillsborough, NC with my husband, Randy. I was active on SP a couple of years ago after I'd had surgery on my shoulder. It was great for helping me get myself back into shape. Then I went back to using my local gym and Curves. I got slack about recording on here... Then I got slack about going to the gym... I was just walking my dog. But I decided I needed to get back to SP and do more because my son is getting married in May - in California. Not only do I want to look great for the wedding, but we'll be staying out there for a week or so after. I want to be fit enough to hike or whatever we decide to do. emoticon
So that's my story! I look forward to getting to know y'all!

Ruth Ė I found out about Spark in Good Housekeeping. Though I havenít lost weight I have gained friends.

Ruth & Sandra Ė I wonít save my journals. Donít want anyone to read a lot of things I wrote in there. I told my daughter years ago, if they havenít been thrown out please do so without reading. I did say my gratitude journal may be read. Hope she pays attention.

Jeanne Ė I will say it once again Ė I so much prefer a book more than on my Kindle. I do subscribe to the newspaper and like to read it, in paper form, with my breakfast.

This is a dialect quiz from the New York Times. (only online!) I came out Philly- Newark/Paterson-Yonkers. I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, so I guess I tipped more toward Jersey than Maryland. How about you all?

I am so fortunate that my kids all really like each other, wives and kids included. They had a blast with this quiz, for example.

Ruth, trust you to put a new perspective on true value of magazines (and were you not a magazine editor of some sort in your last life?)...I just looked through the pile I still have left (2 months worth of 3 women's magazines) and each of them suggests ways to lose that last stubborn 10 pounds. I, too, have done that ad nauseam. Plus, none of the wrinkle-fighting snacks, low carb recipes or shopping secrets that save me money really offer anything I don't already know (and can't use). I do continue to receive a medical research magazine (from my last life) and Atlantic monthy--a gift from a friend, but from now on when tempted to buy a magazine or subscribe to one, I will remember Ruth's sage advice, pick it up and ask myself "Will this change my life in some substantial way?" I already have my answer.

As to reading them on the kindle, my husband subscribes to a couple news magazines that way, but I have not yet taken that plunge. I'm still fighting to hold a book and not a little tablet. Old comforts die hard.

I also miss the paper newspaper, but get the local and national news on line. We simply don't have a garbage recycling program here, so it is always a hassle to get them recycled. Now when we MOVE, I will be right back to the hand-held versions. Online offers too much tactile deprivation.

Ruth: too late to save journals but I kept a few things from when I was more active in groups and was actually happy to discover those files as a reminder that, yes, I have been a more active person.
Re magazines: Love them but will continue to get from the library. The good ones are too numerous to list. I'm hoping that I find them once I learn to use my new Kindle Fire. Like Kay's husband I like the New Yorker. Good short stories, articles, and, of course, cartoons!!! The New York Times Magazine is good, too, and I can get that from the library. Quick catch-up with popular culture is fun too--no harm in it. I need lots and lots of variety; I go wide but not necessarily deep. Ha! Some friends would disagree with that.
I'm waiting to hear back from cable guy to see if everything is "a go" for Friday. Sorry I had to change my phone number but once I make my mind up and somebody tells me it's done, then I accept.
Wish me luck finding a place for everything! I've decided to ask the helpful guy in my building who I gave oodles of things to if I can use his empty storage space here for an undetermined period.
I go get the key this afternoon and see the place empty for the first time...****shudder****

Sorry for those with an unhappy Christmas. I've been there. Are there any changes you can make way ahead of time for next year? More than one get together to separate feuding relatives?

Happy New Year, all!

Good Morning:

Sandra: Keep getting rid of stuff. I'd ditch the calendars and keep the journals. Some family member may find them interesting.Or you could start a website and put them online for all to read.

I rarely read magazine anymore, most are just ads and the reading content is irrelevant to me. Heck I've lost 20 pounds hundreds of times! And spotted Elvis at the mall. Do I rally need another recipe for chicken soup? Did anyone ever read a magazine article that changed your life?

Today I am headed to the nail salon to cut down the amazing growth generated during my time in Cartagena. Later this week I begin skiing, and long nails do not fit in ski gloves!

In the afternoon I will take my mentee to lunch and then a movie.

Have a great day, wherever you are ,no matter the weather.

Kay: My interpretation of your message is==you DID do exercise!

Two more days to give me a chance to pack. Then on Thursday my son has ordered two men from the moving company coming Friday to come and finish what is not done. He knows me well :) This is the first time I've allowed him to take charge albeit from a distance--Denver!

When I hear of you putting things away in closets, in basements, on shelves, I get panicky. I'm pretty sure that the shelving units (other than three big bookcases for the living room) in my new small apartment will not all fit. Maybe I'll have the hallway cluttered for a while until I downsize even further after I move. I have rubber bins to fill with seasonal or seldom-used items but...no place to put them. I'm trying not to second guess myself for choosing a building that doesn't offer a storage space somewhere in the building. For all I know, maybe some of the people DO have these spaces. But, I must stick with the idea of simplify-simplify-simplify.

I promise to be less focussed on myself after I am settled and more focussed on what's Sparkin'

The market sounds fun. It great to have another Southern on the team. I'm going to make a small New Year's Day meal with black-eyed peas, turnip greens, cornbread, and I haven't decided on the meat. There are only 2 of us for the meal.

Naomi, I wasn't into exercising this morning so I just did a 20 minute DVD. Later I will do some cleaning and climbing to put things high on shelves.

Ah my life, today I will start breaking down Christmas as I will be at the market on Wednesday. Yes, market is still going on with lots of extras, a fire dancer, a rolling bar (doesn't open til 2pm) lots of music lots of friends. Some of the vendors are getting together to make the Traditional Southern New Years dinner. It promises to be a fantastic day.

I have one subscription to Good Housekeeping. I only renewed it because it was so inexpensive and my daughter would take them. She no longer wants them. A friend said she will take them. As soon as the new month comes I get rid of the old one. In any quick way I can. I used to pile them up - no more.

We get 2 newspapers a day. I cut out all my magazines. My husband gets the New Yorker. They have good reviews for books, etc. He also gets another one.

We have a recycling bin that they go in everyday, and it goes out on Mondays.

I can't imagine mornings without my newspapers. I get two every day except Saturday when we get three. They all go out with the recycling that gets picked up once a week, along with magazines, junk mail, bottles and cans. I love my mornings with coffee and newspapers. I did cut back on magazines, though, because I just don't have time to read them. Just a couple of car and motorcycle mags left, and I read them cover to cover.

I find that I collect magazines/periodicals, too. If I don't make time to read them as soon as they arrive in the mail, they go in a pile and multiply. Soon I have a huge UNREAD pile 6 or 8 months old (I always think I'll make time to read everything in them and I never do).

I got so I would glance through them, read an article or two that caught my eye and then donate them to local hospitals/doctor/dentist offices (cut off the label!) if they accept them. I feel better that it wasn't ME who filled a landfill and people waiting in doctor offices, etc., have a moment's diversion.

This year I stopped ALL magazine subscriptions. If I see one I want to read, I will just buy it at the stand (and probably will also find I like it 3 or 4 times, like Sandra), but I don't end up with piles I have not read. I also stopped the newspaper and subscribe on line. It isn't nearly as pleasing to read that way, but I don't have piles to dispose of at the end of the week.

Trying to simplify. Not easy for a packrat.

Our high temps were in the middle of the night at 19 degrees and to continue getting colder all day. No walk outside today, but the crockpot potato soup will taste good tonight.

Sandra get rid of those journals and calendars. No one will want them if you donít. Iím sure the journals made you feel good to write in at the time so they served their purpose.

Karen I like calendars with pictures for the same reason but probably wonít get around to painting them. I do keep track of temps the high and low and how many fish we catch each day on the one in the trailer when we are on a trip.

The bigger the place we live in the more ďJunk/StuffĒ we get and never use. I have dishes not antiques in my kitchen I never use and need to get rid of. I would have some empty shelves if I did. And that isnít the only room with stuff that can and should be cleaned out. I donít mind but DH has a fit when I start cleaning. If anything happens to him I will have a mess with his barn on my hands.

Karen book store day have fun I know you two realy enjoy that.

I like salad but it seems veggie soup or just veggies fill me up better and longer than salad.

I'm blowing off fellowship meeting today as it is rainy dreary and my UTI is back. I don't think the sermon is piped into the bathroom.

I absolutely love rice pudding but I find the type cooked in a double boiler to be more creamy than the type baked in the oven. At one time Quaker made a rice pudding mix that I loved, more for it's aroma than for the pudding itself...it reminded me of the smell of my grandmother's kitchen. Those sensory kindlers are hard to forget.

Today my chores consist of letter writing and faxing, and if there is time, doing the NY Times crossword puzzle. I will be settled in, comfortable near a loo, just in case.

Viv, I would like to taste the rice pudding. I'm sure it's low cal.

Sheryl, the lights sound so pretty. It would be nice to walk around and see them. Is it cold where you are now?

We just went to early church, and my last Sunday on duty until February. February only has 4 Sundays, so I can handle it. Christmas had many extra duties. With good help we made it. I made a couple of mistakes as usual. They haven't fired me yet.

Today is rainy and dreary. It's a good day for a nap.

Today is the last day of the regular NFL season. It's a rainy miserable day, so perfect for watching the soap opera that is the Redskins. And another good day for cooking a stew for 4 hours. No rice pudding for me, though, good as it sounds.

Viv, Thanks for being my supplier! (of recipes, that is)

Nomi, eating a large salad everyday has become a wonderful habit for me. During the week it is my main meal of the day.

Joe and I are going to Round Rock today, halfway between us and Austin, for lunch and a book store!

Sheryl, it IS the time to revisit goals. Please ignore Viv's rice pudding, lol.

Rice pudding, Viv! And the recipe is. . . ?

My grandmother used to make rice puddings on Sundays and serve it in a beautiful fluted clear glass bowl.

Sweet memories.

We have dancing lights at the waterfront in our town, the botanical gardens nearby also put out lights with a quiet stroll through the grounds. I have two more gardens to attend by the 30th, just love the way they sinc the music and the lights.

Basements are common in my area, but I have a friend who intentionally bought a house without a basement. She said she knew it would just get filled up with stuff. My basement has been filled and emptied countless times a relatives move or die, and their stuff ends up here because I "have the room". Thanks a bunch. I remember moving into this house in 1985. It was much bigger than the townhouse we left, and I wondered how I'd ever get it furnished. Hah! When you "have the room" it's easy to just take it and decide later. And later is always later than I would think.

Rice pudding I baked yesterday was wonderful not low fat etc but tasted great.
Sandra I agree with everyone you have permission to toss the calendars.
Karen having readers for actual reading is a great idea; I get a kink in my neck when reading a long time. Will try readers.
Kay we down sized Christmas decorations last year and are going to do more this year, donated them to The Salvation Army Store.
Ruth I have bought stuff and then forgot I had it, I love kitchen gadgets and get them at State Fair I found I had three of the same recently lol
Nell I agree canned or boxes stuff gets pushed to the back of shelves and when found it out of date.
Basements can be a blessing a great place to put treasures and then forget about them.
Have a great day everyone.

I've had multiple bouts of "clear out, clean out, throw or give away in the 43 years I've lived in this house - but there are still boxes and boxes of photographs, cards my kids and grandkids made me,etc. and one bedroom (approx.12' x16') that is full of art supplies, frames, a drafting table, and more finished paintings than I want to count - some done by my husband and many oils and watercolors and collages I did over a long period. I still go in there and play once in a while- I would like to simplify and yet I'm not ready to give up art completely. I've had 2 different cleaning ladies go through and organize it for me and much was weeded out each time. If I had a basement most of the stuff in that room would go downstairs. Few houses in Tucson have basements..

I wear drugstore "granny" glasses for reading, sewing etc. So far they work for me and I have a pair (or two) in every room of the house. My DH wore the same strength and so we built up quite a collection of them.

I think I have caught up with all the posts - it's good to share our little weakness and good to know we are not alone!

Blessings ~ Mo

In the past I was a magazine addict so I did find myself buying and bringing home duplicate magazines. Whatever attracted me to them the first time, also worked the second time! I've kicked that habit. There is a free library on the first floor of this building. I've once again found myself bringing up the same magazine but...at least it's free and I just growl and bring it back. With the library just across the street from my next place, I'm sure I'll do that again.

Hello all:

I downsized a few years ago after my son left; then he moved back in and I had all the stuff again. He moved out last September but there are closets of his clothing and half a cellar full of books.

When things are on the way out they go to the basement, then I forget that I have a perfectly good ______(fill in the blank) in the basement and I go out and buy a new one. My senility is a boon to merchants.

Did you ever buy something, put it away, and forgot you bought it???

Sandra, I'm with Karen. Please throw away old calendars and old paper. They aren't any good anymore. You are really doing well with your downsizing.

We downsized out Christmas decorations and gave them to my niece and donated the rest.

Thanks for the information about Goodwill. It's not too far from us, so we have been taking donations there for a long time.

Viv, I think I'll keep the rain instead of the snow. When I go to early church, I'll have my lime green umbrella with me. For a time being, I'll keep it in a box for now. My husband will let me out under a shelter.

Go ahead and throw them out if you never refer to them. I have calendars and diaries going back to about 1958. I don't know why I keep them. The thought of anyone reading the maunderings of a 10 year old, or the lovelorn crap of a teenager is horrifying, yet if I don't throw them out my kids will read them after I'm gone, and their opinion of me will never be the same. Then they will toss them. Those old calendars are only important if you need them to remember the name of the doctor you saw in 1995, or the name of the hotel you stayed in in 1991. Do you?

Sandra, you have MY permission to trash those calendars! The only reason I keep any calendars, or even buy any, is because they have artwork that appeals to me and that I think, in my dreams, that I might paint one day.

Of course, this year my DIL sent me a calendar that has a photo of my granddaughters on each page. Won't ever throw that one away!

I have the progressive glasses but my vision isn't very bad. I wear glasses to drive or if I go to a theater or concert, but don't wear them in my house very often.

However, I do wear readers to read. I prefer them to the progressive glasses for reading, because the progressives have such a small width at the bottom for reading that I have to hold my head a certain way to read. I have readers in every room and use them for, yes, reading, lol.

I'm sitting in a chair with my keyboard on my lap and my lap top on a tiny folding table as I gave my desk away.

Now I feel like I need permission to throw away a stack of daily journals/calendars going back to 1990. What's the point of keeping them? Who would like to give me permission????

Hope everyone one had a good day.
I had the urge for baked rice pudding so have pot in the oven. Looking forward to eating it later.
I agree with you all I wear bifocals as it makes so much easier.
Giveup 30 sounds like a plan, wish we coulf get some warmer weather.
PJ good news about the surgery, as hard as it is your are doing the best thing for your Dad, and your advice was the best under the circumstances. What a great idea about your luggage.
Naomi I have lost my sun glasses many times only to find them on my head.

I started last year giving thing away to grandchildren that have moved out from parents. I don't need all the dishes etc in kitchen, lots of thing I had in linen closet they could use I am still slowly still cleaning things out and giving to others while I am here. I don't want to leave for my son to just truck up and give to Salvation Army. Yes them because they give to other when a family home burn or when some one really needs. The Goodwill person that is in charge is a millionaire and they sale things too high. For I have found things I gave as high as the price in store or higher. Was in Goodwill a few months ago and this lady said I gave this and the price is just like if you bought it in a store. and I never hear of the one running Goodwill giving anything free to help others. Well just hope when I go I have very little for son to worry about.

Nell, you really had a difficult time. I can't imagine. We are trying to get mother to donate some things to Goodwill, but she wants to sell everything. Most of her furniture is so outdated. She still has some of daddy's clothes. She had 3 closets full of clothes for her and still shops when possible. There are probably only 3 pairs of slacks that she can wear. She only needs about 2 church outfits; one for summer and one for winter. My brother took her once before Christmas.
We will have an estate sale and donate to Goodwill when something happens to her.

Jeanne, I know how you feel. They just don't want to give up their personal things.
It must have been hard to do those things in such a short time.

Sandra, you are really going places. You are getting rid of your possessions and making new friends. Keep us posted on the dinner.

Thanks PJ for the idea. I've thought of that when I am at baggage, but then I forget before we leave for a trip.

Jeanne, I hate to throw stuff out, too, but that's the advantage of having the time to go through it. When Mom moved the first time in 2001, we couldn't get her to do anything in the 9 months leading up to the move. My sister came 2 hours from New Jersey every weekend, and I went up 3 hours every couple of weekends for months. We would pack up boxes, then the next time we went find that she had unpacked. The day before the movers came we ended up just putting piles out for the trash. Then when she got to the new condo we had to do it all again because she'd brought too much stuff. The condo was so full we couldn't get Dad's wheelchair and lifting equipment in. Best to do it when we have all our faculties and no deadline.

Sandra, How great is it that you are getting help while giving it at the same time. A symbiotic relationship, hmmm?

You'll get there!

Sandra, I am trying to get rid of stuff, too, in anticipation of a future move, but I'm sure it is easier in a large apartment building than here where I reside in the middle of nowhere. I have BIG piles of giveaways or goodwill donations. Once the weather clears a bit I may have a yard sale (the town has one every summer), but for now I've done much sorting and the piles are neatly hidden in the basement, so there will be lots of stairs up and down to get the stuff out of the house for good. Not sure what my aversion is to just tossing stuff...too much of my depression-era mom in me, I guess.

I spent yesterday de-Christmasing (that is always a letdown) and cleaning up after the festivities. All the goodies are gone to better homes and we are back on track. I stepped on the scales with trepidation this morning only to find I was up only 1/2 pound. That should be gone in 2 days and I'll be off and running toward goal again.

JudyLK, so good to "see" you again. Since we are nearly neighbors, I often wonder where you are. Good luck with the new knee and retirement. I'm sure you'll love both.

Glad to see the rest of you who don't post as often, too. It is great to have you among us as often as possible, but I do realize life gets in the way of computer (LOL).

Love you all and appreciate the richness you each bring to my life. Happy 2014 to come!

P.S. I want to try to get younger in the new year (as much as possible) so my new avatar is me at age 21. Think I can look like that again?. OK, only if I forget every pair of glasses I ever owned. Why do we never appreciate our vigor and youth? But I do appreciate the wisdom I've gained over the years even more. I like where I am.

Kay I have an aunt that ties on some really colorful yarn in a bow onto her luggage to make it easy to spot.

Sandra Iím glad you are getting some help. What a deal you worked out with your neighbor you both came out winners with that. He gets stuff he needs and you get help and dinner.

I got outside for a nice walk this morning before our temps plummeted tomorrow. It felt good to get out in the fresh air and sunshine.

I agree that many of us are less sharp, need to focus more, search for words continually, etc. I believe we are the majority. And then there are those on either end of the spectrum, people like my mother on the clever end: sharp as a tack until her death and had no patience with slowness. Unfortunately, most of her children didn't inherit this so I think we really tried her patience all our lives. Then again, she had her faults that we had to put up with.

This move is getting closer and closer. I had two wonderful young friends come this morning and worked hard for two and a half hours and then I said that was enough. I managed to give away yet more things including a bottle of champagne from my refrigerator that has been there since July 3, 2011 (my birthday).

A man I never met from this building had posted a request for curtains and other window things. I rang him and he spent a big part of yesterday coming and going with all I gave him, including furniture. He is new here. I even gave all the bedding except my Queen size stuff. He said he would come back and help with packing...and take me to dinner after I move.

Now I'm waiting for the son of a friend to pick up a desk and hutch...can't understand why they aren't getting in touch...was supposed to be here yesterday.

Unlike last move, I am better at accepting help and it's wonderful. For some reason I'm extremely tired so am wondering what I will accomplish myself today. It's only 1:43 here, though.

A great weekend to all!

I think our brains do slow down. I'm around my post-stroke husband and a mother with dementia so much that I feel sharp as a knife, then the kids and grandkids are here for a holiday, and I see clearly that they are so much sharper than I am.

Mary, it's so good to hear from you. You really got busy downsizing and sharing with others.
I do think you seem to be feeling better. Don't overdo. Take some time to rest. I think your brain is working as well as the others on this team. We just do the best that we can every day.

Now I am on my way to the basement. I was waiting until it warmed up down there. I've had the heat on high upstairs.

Things are beginning to straighten up - slowly. We've been able to go throw a lot of stuff for 3 different ladies. They were all happy to get what we wanted to get rid of & we were happy to have them take stuff. I just hope we'll end up with just what we need.

It's going to be in the 60's today but down to 13 on the next few days.

I'm really hopong that I cam get my brain to straighten out & I can make out what's going on with some sence.

Hope everyone has a good & safe day!

Good Morning

Home today. Though may call my neighbor to see if I can visit for a bit. I was asked in a round about way to join the library board. The husband of my neighbor was president many years ago and I want to get some insight. Don't know if I want to do this as I don't like meetings at night, one of the reasons.

Naomi, I have done that many times with my reading glasses. They would be on the top of my head. I'm not sure that is just age.

Ruth, I agree. People in other countries have some benefits that we don't have now, but overall we do have the best. Sometimes it doesn't seem that way, but we do have many advantages. We do have more freedom, although we have had some scary incidents with privacy and gun issues.

Today, I am going to the basement and pack up the last box. This is in print so I will do it.

PJ, I wish you were closer. My luggage is black and in good shape, but I have a difficult time at the airport. I don't have any artistic friends that live here. Last year, I bought an aqua carry on, but I haven't tried it yet on a plane. It has all my essentials.

Enjoy you day Spark Friends.

No matter what you are told The United States doesn't have the latest and the greatest in all areas...like chips on credit cards or lights on parking lots. But no matter how technologically passe we are, what we have is pretty good.

I want to jump in with a glasses story. During the summer I was at someoneís else. I had put my sunglasses on, always wear them outside. They are prescription and even though they are sunglasses doesnít change the color of what you are seeing. I was fumbling around and my brother asked what I was looking for. I told him my glasses and his response Ė you are wearing them.

Ruth Ė that parking sounds wonderful

PJ, thanks for the updates. I am so glad that the surgery went well. Now you start packing again for Texas.

I feel for your dad, but it's for the best. When we are in his place, we may have a difficult time also.

It's been a good day. Rain will move in tonight and rain all day Saturday/Sunday. Last Sunday someone mistook my umbrella for theirs. I guess there are many short black umbrellas. One of my Christmas presents was a lime green short umbrella. Maybe no one will take it.

DHs brother came through his back surgery yesterday with flying colors. Now on to his recovery and since the surgery wasnít as serious as they thought recovery should be faster too. Texas here we come in a couple more weeks hopefully.

Went to see dad today and again he asked if he could get his car back. It breaks my heart to keep telling him no but that is for the best and I will continue to tell him NO. He mentioned he is getting depressed and just told him to join any all the activities he can and get out of that apartment cause sitting in there isnít going to make him feel any better.

Kay I think most of us have misplaced our cars at one time or another. So You arenít alone with this.

Thanks for the update. I would like to taste those cinnamon rolls for quality control.
I'm glad the ice is gone. It's so dangerous.

Ruth, I am living in the wrong place. I like the idea of the red lights/green lights in parking lots.

Today, I took a nap, and it was nice to rest for a while. Now I'm drinking my afternoon tea, and trying to decide what to do next. Do I want to go to the cold basement and work or read/watch TV?
