Hi all! I'm on my way home from a trip to California to visit some of my family and my newest grand son. What a treat. For my birthday we all (9 of us) went to Knotts Berry Farm. Lots of laughs and fun. Great memories.

Now should I or should i not try to keep a couple of new years resolutions?

Hi folks!
I'm back from Denver. The weather there wasn't bad but then, I'm from Nova Scotia. There were some cold days but the sun really warms things up.
My son and daughter-in-law are very generous to me. I'm not the typical mother or mother-in-law visit. They don't expect me to do ANYTHING but I manage to do a few little chores---VERY little.
Karen: Your Christmas story was just great. I loved how the persons' lifestyle. i.e., serving jail terms, didn't enter into the giving.
I'm sorry for the sad events in some lives. We all know that they come and go and sometimes stay.
It sure is lonesome in this apartment after having spent nine days with people I love.
C'est la vie.
Love and hugs to all and my very best wishes for all the joy you can stand in 2013.

So nice to see you posting again on our chat. Come again, often-er (if that's a word). So sorry to hear about all your troubles, especially about not seeing the grandchildren for 8 years. Perhaps they are big enough now that you could send a card or letter to them.

I'm hibernating until the new year. Took my car in for servicing today and will pick it up before 4 this afternoon. So today i'm indoors and taking care of housechores.

Hi Everyone, It's been a long time since I've been on any of my groups. A lot has been happening in my life. I've lost a lot of dear relatives and friends since April and my M-in-law
had a stroke a week before we were leaving for our vacation in Oct. She is doing a lot better considering she is 97 yrs young.

There has been some good things happening too. I am still losing weight and I didn't do as much damage over the Holidays as I usually do. I haven't gotten on the scale lately but the pants are fitting much better. Also my husband I started going back to church since we took an ALPHA class from a neighborhood church and that has been really great. We not only have gotten closer to our Lord but have made a lot of wonderful friends.

I still haven't seen my grand kids since Labor Day of 2004 but in my heart I do. I feel what goes around comes around and my son and DIL will learn some day how they have hurt me.

I wish all a very safe and Happy New Year. I hope to get back on more often in 2013

Wow, a lot happening when I miss one day of this thread. My heart goes out to all of you with family who are suffering in some way. No matter how carefully you've planned your life and/or what good choices you've made, stress after 60 can be hard due to illness in your family. We all have to find our inner strength to make it through. As one of my cousins put it, "You have to just toughen up and work through it." Easier said than done. I've always felt that having a support group, be it next door or a "virtual" one online, brings comfort and relief. I'm thankful for all my friends here.

Joe's Mom got through her first chemo treatment in good shape and his Dad was release from the hospital and is happy to be home so he can get some sleep, lol. He had a blood transfusion there to help with anemia/hemoglobin.

Stay safe today. The crazies get out early. Joe and I will be staying in at my house, drinking nothing stronger than Ozarka Spring Water!

Mo and Viv, I'm glad that you are both better.

I've been doing some paperwork in the study. No one can tell it but me.

I'm treating myself to a pedicure and manicure this morning for the New Year.
We are just going to a place for lunch that we have only been once. It's crowded, and they don't take reservations. The food is delicious.
There are too many crazy drivers out at night. We started this a few years ago. Then we have a relaxing afternoon.

Enjoy today and please be careful. emoticon

Viv - I hope you are taking it easy and taking care of yourself! Glad to read that you are doing better.

Jeanne - your SIL is in my prayers. Have they scheduled the surgery for your sister? People seem to recover more quickly from those joint replacement surgeries than they did 20 years ago when my FIL had his done.

I am so much better - still a bit of a cough and fatigue. I will start taking Christmas stuff down tomorrow - really glad I did less than usual this year.

This afternoon I went grocery shopping to take advantage of the $1 a bottle laundry detergent. But I forgot to buy the pickled herring for New Year's eve..a tradition so I'll have money in the new year.

That is a laugh as I almost never carry actual cash or coins anymore. I use my debit or credit card for just about everything and pay my bills online and just shift virtual money from account to another electronically. So I'll have virtual cash in the cyberbank, maybe I could also eat virtual pickled herring.

What are your traditional foods to eat at year's end for luck in the New Year?

Jeanne – Sorry to hear about the health problems in your family. So sad.

I am very grateful for my neighbors. One of them snowblowed the driveway - I cleared the steps and he did them again as more snow came.

I think I will get out my skis and wax them. My favorite ski mountain is already open, but with limited runs. But with some snow and a good base skiing next week may be a possibility on more than a few runs.

Jeanne, sorry to hear about your SIL and your sister. Hope both get better soon.

I'm fine here; had several of hubby's family at his Mom's next door for Christmas Day; was a fun time. New Year's Day will be at her house but may be a little quieter.

Hope everyone has a safe New Year's Eve & Day. Happy New Year early!

Hope everyone is well and ready for the new year (Mo, Viv, Vista...and anyone else).

I just found out my SIL's cancer is back, this time in the brain and worse than before. She is such a wonderful person and does not deserve this fight again. She does so much for me (and others) I just wish there were something I could do for her besides just pray and be there. My sister also needs a hip replacement and is nearly bed-ridden with pain until then (she is a widow and all her children are far away, so I'm doing all I can to help). She is 5 years younger than I am, so I am very lucky to still be relatively healthy. I hope 2013 brings health, prosperity and peace to everyone!

Karen:That reminds me, I never got my dexascan results from the doctor. I don't know if I'm losing bone or maintaining. I doubt that we can add bone after a certain age, but it would be interesting to find out.

Viv: So sorry you're hurting. I love the snow so for me shoveling is a great way to be out in the wonderful white stuff. I shovel even though I don't have to, the condo association takes care of anything more than 1 inch, the dusting we just have to salt from bins of ice melt left at strategic places around the property. Take care and be well.

I am getting an early start on cleaning out my kitchen. I am setting the task of two drawers or cabinets everyday so I don't have to do everything at once. All shelves get wiped down, dishes and plates rewashed and returned in a semblance of order. The pantry will get done one section at a time since it is difficult to find enough room in my condo kitchen to put everything on the shelves. I'm planning on doing that last, so there may be less to move when I get around to it in ten days. Those of you who have moved know that the kitchen is the most densely "habitated" room in the house, all those dishes, glassware, pot and pans, utensils, baking equipment, non perishables and food in refrigerator and freezer. Then too there's the cleaning products in closets and under the sink and linens. It's a wonder most kitchen don't collapse from the weight of all the stuff they hold. This job is definitely best done a little at a time.

Sometime in the cold of winter I am going to clear out the closet that hold all my mother's office stuff. I was told I should also hold that for 7 years. It's been five, but I need the space. I think the government got what they thought was due in taxes shortly after she died. Now it's time for the living to claim the space.

I have four huge closets in my upstairs hallway, one for linens, one for suitcases, sweaters and oversize linens, another two for out-of-season or less oft used clothing (think ski wear and summer sports duds) and the other is currently occupied by my mon's papers and the educational materials I buy before going to South America. So my projects are lined up and waiting. Hope we get some bad weather so I can get these chores done.

I woke up today thinking about starting a new healthy year. I'm a little early, but it's on my mind. Last year I focused on nutrition until I found a healthy way to eat that brought all my "numbers" into really desirable, healthy ranges. My blood work verified I was on the right track.

This new year I'll be zeroing in on improving/not losing bone density. This is a challenge for me since the common most load bearing exercises result in pain for me due to a bad hip when done in any consistent, effective manner.

So I'll be searching for no or very low impact exercises that are still effective for building bone density. After an entire life of more physical activity (read that "hard labor") than your average woman, I never thought this would be an issue for me. But here I am. Not critical, but slipping some in bone density, and determined to correct that.

If you have a favorite dvd, exercise or any thoughts at all on this, feel free to pass them my way!

Karen

We are home from Seattle and out of the mountain snows...feels great! All went well.

Viv, so sorry about your being out of commission. I agree! Hire it done. It isn't worth the injuries you get from the exercize.

Kay, I love your clean out plan. I have taxes back to the 1990s. I've been cleaning out lots of things since I retired, but that is one I have not yet tackled. It is in the basement, where I don't see it daily, so easy to forget. NEXT year I will do it!!! (Isn't that just a few days?)

Viv, I hope that you are alright. Find someone that shovels snow and hire them to do it for you.
You don't need to be doing that. A little shoveling is good exercise, but I think you overdid it.

Well, I'm going to run errands this morning. I've spent two day in the house working. Of course it's never finished, but someone can come in the front of the house.

Have a good day. It's still below freezing, but maybe the winds have calmed down.

Sorry for being MIA, I fell while shoveling snow last week so have been out of action since, spent most of the holiday flat on my back. Feeling better today will catch up on the posts today.

Every year we last year's taxes. We keep them for 5 years. I throw away last year's bank and credit card records the first of January.
A few months ago we emptied a filing cabinet. I need one filing cabinet with 3 file drawers, but can't find one.

I hope that everyone had a good day. We have spent 2 days packing up and organizing Christmas decorations. I taped an index card to each box and wrote was inside.
Today I spotted something else. It will wait until tomorrow.

We missed the snow/ice but had really strong wins & it was really cold. The news said that the stores were full of people "bargain hunting". I'v had my fill of stores & don't need any bargains!.

Hope everyone gets better & all have a good & safe day!

Got up early this morning to dump my files from 2005 and transfer the 2012 files to the now empty filebox. With just about everything stored online these days, keeping paper receipts seems like a waste of time and space. What receipts/paperwork do you keep? What do you throw away? When?

Getting packed up and ready to head home (over the horrid mountain pass that lies between my son and our home). It is about a 6 hour drive on a good day, so with weather, who knows? See you on the other side of the mountain!

Irene, I'm so happy you have a cell phone! You'll be using it like a pro in no time. If for nothing else, I think cell phones are the number one safety device for everyone. Car trouble, fall and break your leg, lost on the way to meet someone - a cell phone can be your life jacket!

Joe's Mom had her first chemo treatment yesterday. Joe's brother Matt took her. He also took his Dad along to see the doctor because he had a bad cold and didn't feel well. They are in Connecticutt and it was snowing. I doubt either parent would have been fit to drive.

His Dad ended up being admitted to the hospital. Anemic. Was given a blood transfusion and kept overnight. His Mom did fine for her first treatment and Matt brought her home. She has to go back today for some sort of shot. Hopefully, his Dad will be released, too. Matt commutes to work in Manhattan but is off all week. Joe is giving him the Good Brother award for being there for their parents. Like my sons, one lives near home and parents and the other far away. The one out of state always feels bad for not being near enough to help.

Joe's Mom is 68 and his Dad is 76. They recently renewed their wedding vows. Their 50th anniversary is in February. It's hard on them when both are ill. Please add them to your thoughts, prayers and/or good vibrations you send out.

Joe and I are driving to Austin today - bookstores, lunch and Ikea on the way home. I want some picture ledges for my wall so I can prop up all my matted, unframed watercolors until I give them away, or paint better ones. Always trying for that. I've been doing a lot of painting lately. It's more fun than ever. I'm happy to have an interest besides reading and researching. And it sometimes produces things others like to view.

Karen

Mo, it's alright to talk to yourself. I agree with Ruth. Mo, I hope you are all better soon.

I do hope all our Spark friends get home safe.

It's cold and windy in north Ga. It feels like 22 degrees. I think I'm moving to Florida. This is not my kind of weather.
We really worked in the house today and hope to finish tomorrow. Friday will be errand day.

Get a good night's sleep. I may hibernate like bears.

MO; Talking to yourself (out loud) is recommended. You always will have someone intelligent to listen! Hope you are feeling better.

I do not pay for trash, no matter how it's delivered. I consider most of the mail that comes to my home to be trash, and it goes right from the mailbox into the recycling. I don't pay for cable either. There is enough trash on network TV (which I rarely waitch) . I don't pay for trashbags either, the plastic I get at the stores is good enough for my trash. Even my garden waste is put in a wheeled foldable "container" which is wheeled and deposited into the dumpster.

Sandra - I enjoy Phase 10 and also play Skippo with a friend on a regular basis.

Ruth - I have no Idea what your gift could be for. Let us know if you solve the mystery.

I woke up soaking wet - I think my fever broke in the night. My voice was pretty much gone yesterday - which I didn't realize until I called my Mom to check on her and it came out in a whispery croak. Funny thing about living alone - unless you talk to yourself out loud, you don't know when you have laryngitis!

Since I went down to Basic cable, I don't get TBS and thought I was going to miss the annual watching of "A Christmas Story" (What do you want for Christmas, little boy? I want a Red Ryder.......BB gun. You'll shoot your eye out") What can I say - it's a tradition! But I was able to rent it through my Amazon streaming video for $1.99. Take that Cox cable! I also rented "A Christmas Story 2" - a blatant ripoff of the first movie and a waste of money. Won't watch that one again.

Im glad everyone had a nice holiday or day off.

Mystery present, not the giver, but the gift. I received a silverplate fork-like apparatus. It has four tines, three of which are curled into incomplete circles and the other is a very pointed tine. It looks like it could be used to remove crab or lobster from the shell . Who knows. Any ideas?

I spent an hour or more on the Internet trying to research what this tool (utensile) is used for, but haven't come up with any useful information. But in the search I did learn a lot about antique implements.

Sandra, I'm so happy you are able to visit friends and family in Denver!

My Christmas was wonderful. We all have so much to be thankful for, all the time, but I often just give thanks for love and joy. What would life be like if there were no such emotions in the world?

I always think of this.

25 degrees here in Central Texas this morning. And very windy.

We are home, and very tired. Mother made it through Christmas Eve. Every immediate family member came but one niece. Mother enjoyed watching her great grandchildren play with the toys. She held the baby for a long time.
After everyone left, she became depressed again. We talked for a long time.
My brothers are going to try to get her in to see her doctor it see if it's just depression or something else. I think something else is going on, but I don't think anything can be done. She is getting weaker. I know that one of my brothers was going to come over and visit her this evening and bring her some food.
As soon as our son gets home, I'm going to call her. She wants to know we are safe. We really drove through some heavy going to her house and had rain returning.

Mo and Jeanne, I hope that you both feel better soon.
Sandra, we also saw White Christmas, and it was good.
Naomi and Ruth be safe in your weather.

Karen: No long johns....We're not doing any outdoor things, really. Plus...I like cold weather!

Yesterday was a surprise activity for me. Scott and Mary booked the stage musical "White Christmas" for the three of us and I didn't know what we were doing until we approached the arts centre and I saw the huge flag showing the name. It was great and very nostalgic for me and a wonderful production.

The scene from White Christmas was recreated just before two friends were leaving after spending Christmas Eve with us...a miraculous soft snowfall.

After eating, we played the card game called Phase 10 and we all laughed so much that I thought I and one other woman were going to keel over. Ha! It was lovely having these nice friends with us who would otherwise have been alone for Christmas Eve.

Now off to the mountains for Christmas dinner with another family with two young boys.

Love and Merry Christmas to All!

I always check the weather in Denver since my son and his family live there. It's 7 degrees this morning. Sandra, hope you took your long johns, lol.

It will be 26 in Central Texas tonight. That's pretty cold for us. We had some wind and rain this monring. Nothing to worry about. Really appreciated the rain. I keep my bird feeder full in the winter and the birds appreciate my evergreen bushes. Gets pretty chilly even for birds with no leaves on most of the trees.

I hope YOU are all staying warm and safe this Christmas day, and spreading Peace, Joy and Love wherever you are.

Jeanne - wishing you a safe and easy journey and hope you are feeling better.

I managed to get a same day appt with the nurse practitioner today and she put me on a Z pack. I picked up herbal teas and lower sodium soup while I was waiting for it to get filled and dropped some of them at Mom's before I headed home.

Happy Holidays my friends, and a happy birthday to SOLITARY65. emoticon

Mo, I also have come down with a nasty headcold (not coughing this time...just sinus headachy), and I DID take Karen's remedy of airborne (a couple times a day) when it first started. Not sure if it is coincidence, but the cold is much lighter than usual (or is it that I'm healthier than in October when I got the full force flu for almost 3 weeks?)

Anyway, still sniffling, but that cough and laryngitis is what I always dread most--and I didn't get it this time. I also got a pneumonia shot last month. Does that affect severity of colds? Hope you feel better soon (and like you, when I get sick I worry about others in my family with less immune response, like daughter Kelli who had a liver transplant). Can't always stay away, but I try to be careful when I must be close to those I love.

We're heading out tomorrow morning (Christmas day) to my son's home 300 miles away. We waited until then because our granddaughter (who lives close) has to work Christmas Eve and she wants to go home to see her Dad and siblings, too. Weather looks nasty, especially over the Snoqualmie pass (ugh), so we'll take it slow and easy. I'm getting too old to fight winter. Maybe we should have a special un-Christmas gift exchange in the summer and not weather the weather.

Mo, I do the same when I'm ill - try all the natural remedies I can. Have you ever tried Airborne? It's effervescent tablets that dissolve in water. Created to keep you well when flying, surrounded by all that recycled air/germs, but it actually helps when I feel something coming on. Has lots of Vitamin C and other things that boost your immune system.

Take care. Be well.

Happy Birthday, REDHATLADY9 emoticon

Kay, I wish you a safe and easy journey and a good visit with your Mom.

I am feeling the tiniest bit better but still not ready to face the word. I cough, I sneeze, my nose is runny. My Mom came down with it yesterday and I am more concerned about her. I may have to ask my daughter to pick us up some cough drops, herbal tea, low-sodium soups, etc.

MO: Have you ever made pozole for Christmas? I found a recipe for a modified pozole in a food magazine (doesn't use the pig's head) and it was very good. Best place to get that in the east is the Smithsonian American Indian Museum (DC and NYC)'s cafe.

Kay: I know you will worry about your Mom, daughter's do that. Just try to make the holidays as merry as you can for her..effort is required, perfection is not expected.

Naomi: I would love to have a Jewish person's perspective on the holiday, it's really just another day, isn't it? My fellowship of Unitarians has a lot of converts from Christianity (and Judiasm) who get guilt tripped by their families over Christmas. Mentally we know it's just another day, but thinking about it can help each person take what's important out of the message of the holiday. Everything else is non-essential. I try to approach Christmas like I do Yom Kippur. and Ramadan..it's the message that's important.

I had a very lazy day - stayed in jammies, drank herbal tea, used the neti pot a couple of times and slept a lot. I think I'm on the road to recovery - sure hope so as the family is coming here for Christmas Eve, Mexican food, etc. No tacos, Ruth, but 2 kinds of enchiladas and cheese crisps and various vegetarian dishes.

Had a lazy day. Went to the library took books and DVD back and got more of each. Caught up on some recorded shows and watched Upstairs/Downstairs DVD. Also did some reading.

Have a good evening.

We're doing what we like best...nothing. It's either ham or tacos on Christmas day, (I'm partial to tacos) but we'll kick back and just veg out.

I've decided that Christmas is the season you get homesick...even when you're home.

So many bitter-sweet memories.

I agree with Karen, Kay. Be careful traveling.

I'm going to pick up the Harvesters food for the elderly, and deliver it today. Then I'll be baking. I'm having Christmas at my daughters. It is an hrs drive to her house.

Have a nice weekend everyone, and don't forget the true meaning of CHRISTmas. Blessings to you all!. emoticon

We are going to my SIL's home for my husband's family Christmas get together. This is the first time that I haven't had it since Mrs. Vaughn died. It's is a welcome break.
There will be about 18 there. We will leave this morning. It's about an hour from our house. My husband has to make the coffee. It feels like 21 degrees here, but we aren't having a blizzard. It's just cold bitter weather.

Everyone be careful driving today. I agree with Karen. People are in such a hurry. The stores, etc. aren't going anywhere.

Have a good day!!

Sandra, I know you'll have a wonderful time in Denver with YOUR Scott, lol.

Kay, Such a difficult beginning to what turned out to be a rich, meaningful life. You do so much for others now. You've taken unfortuntate circumstances and turned them into a very positive existence.

I made it through the Christmas party without eating much of anything. Kept my mouth full of laughter instead of food!

Watch the traffic if you go out. Even in my smallish towns the roads and stores and parking lots are packed and crazy!

Oh, Kay. That's so sad.

Merry Christmas, everybody. I'll be in Denver so may not reconnect until I get home.

Mo, I really feel for you at this time of year. My first husband died in February, 1972. We spent a Christmas in a large medical center. My parents brought a small tree, decorations and gifts. He was quite alert at the time. Later when we came home, and he went into the local hospital, he went in a comma. I would teach school during the day and spend the night in his room at the hospital. I lived at the hospital for a long time. He didn't seem to be coming out of the comma. The doctor suggested that we unplug everything. That was a difficult decision, but I think it was best for him. He had been sick for 2 years. I was a widow at 23.
Although I have been remarried for 34 years, I still have some memories of those days.

They really need to do more research. He had Hodgkin’s disease.

In my working life, I helped get funding for some of the cutting-edge research in our college. One professor, in particular, saw some amazing cancer remissions with his experimental protocols. They were non-invasive (a shot) and the antogens actually ATE the cancer tumors. I think you are right, Ruth, in that curing cancer is not financially "prudent" for many. He is yet to get a good grant to complete his promising studies.

Hope you are well and safe this season. Wishing you joy and peace.

Mo, I know those memories never leave us. We were fortunate to have what we had as long as we had it. That is what I try to remember.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Thank you, Mo. I'm sure what your husband...and you and family...went through only seems like yesterday, at this time of year especially. And thanks for the reminder to love and appreciate who we have with us.

My sweet husband was diagnosed with lung cancer in November of 2004 - he went through awful radiation treatment but wasn't able to do more than 2 chemo treatments because his blood was out of whack. He continued to smoke cigarettes ( fewer than before) until Feb. 2006 when he told me they just didn't taste good anymore. He passed in June of 2006, but went into hospice home care in January of that year. The radiation burns were awful - I'm not sure I would ever go that route. The hospice nurses were wonderful and I bless them for helping me keep him at home where he wanted to be.

Stay safe, my friends, in the path of storms. Hug your loved ones a little tighter and enjoy the joy of family at this special time of year.

Nomi: Good for your mother. My younger brother did that for my mother. I didn't have the courage. I hope I have the courage now and in the future.
