Good evening all. Happy Halloween.

Took DS to the hospital today for x-rays...tingling in his left arm probably a "screw lose" from the steel plate they screwed in his shoulder blade last year.Maybe it's hitting a nerve.

Then I was off to cc Philly for an appointment with the ENT. He took a camera and looked inside my nose (probably probing for boogers) and declared that my post nasal drip and recently found allergies could be "contained" with a neti pot and frequent nasal flushings, and if that didn't work, a steroidal spray. Well, you know me, I would rather change my lifestyle , change what I eat, do exercises till the cows run back to the barn rather than take medicine. So I am now trying the flush to control the post nasal drip...

Naomi, so glad you're okay. I understand NY is suffering worse than PA, NJ and DE from the hurricane. My Spark buddy has been without power for two days and just this afternoon went to a hotel to wait out the return of power.

I spent two days inside, watching and listening from my window. Yesterday, when things calmed down I went outside to brush the pine needles from my windows and walls, clean up the limbs and leaves in the garden. Tonight I had a cleared path for the five Trick or Treaters who showed up at my door. I wish more had come, I've already had three bite size candies. I'll give the rest to my mentee this weekend to share with her family.

And BOO!

Karen: I've been given the same exercise for painful back-of-thigh muscles (can't remember their name).

Thanks for the Spark Goody team!

Jeanne, I found this knee exercise on SP long ago and another member swore that it relieved her knee pain, so I tried it. I have recommended it to several people who were all very surprised that it made their knee pain go away!

Heel slide knee extension:

Lie on your back, with left knee bent and left foot flat on floor. Slowly slide the left heel away from your body so both legs are parallel. Hold for 5-10 seconds, return to starting position. Repeat 5 times on each leg.

You can also do this sitting on your sofa, with your foot on a coffee table, wearing a sock or with something under your heel so your foot slides easily. I do it while watching tv. It does help. Give it a try.

I had my annual checkup today, including the boob mash (kind of like the moster mash). All seems well, except of course for the things that keep aging. Gavity is really mean! My knee may need a replacement in the future, but I'm holding off on that as long as possible. If I can get and keep the weight off, it will do wonders for that pain. I was about to have it done a few years back when I lost several pounds and it stopped hurting. Miracle! Now a few pounds have crept back and so I'm working hard to get them off again. It is a never-ending battle. I also got my flu shot, a pneumonia shot and have to go back in for a shingles shot and tetnus/whooping cough. Doctor says I should have them all. Seems like over-kill, but I'm not the doctor.

Naomi, I'm so glad you checked in and are OK. I hope your home and everyone you love is the same. What a nasty, nasty event for all who lived through it and all of us who watched in horror.

Naomi, I 'm so glad you got to check in with us! How is your basement? You were worried about it filling with water and then having no power to use the sump pump? I was in a flood long ago where the four of us had to leave our home in a boat. The aftermath is so horrible.

It is very important NOT to get into the flood water if you can avoid it, or let your kids get in it. My son developed viral neumonitis after the flood and he was never in the water, but there was a gray film over everything when the water subsided. Lots of germs.

Hello everyone - I'm sorry to hear of the problems for some members who had to be so up-close with Sandy. Hope and pray that things will be back to normal or near normal for you soon. I'm trying hard to get used to checking in on Spark more regularly now that I'm back in my home location.
Have a good time with the "Trick or Treaters" this evening.

I'm still without power. In the library now - charging my phone. My daughter lost power, a tree fell on a water pipe so they have been without water since yesterday. She lives in Jersey know motel/hotels available they are going down to Baltimore.

My son also no electric and they will soon be shutting the water. He lives in a large bldg. complex. He did manage to get to work. Subways for him not working drove part way and walked part way.

This is no fun.

No time to read the posts. Hope everyone who was in Sandy's wrath is okay.

I'm happy that you all made it through the storm with no major destruction. So many people did not.
I've been in a flood and wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I'm re-inventing my breakfast. I usually do best eating the same breakfast each day. For years that was oatmeal with raisins, etc. added. Then I switched to eggs. Looking for another change.

Anyone have a diet friendly healthy breakfast they think is great? I think I'll start a thread for BREAKFAST IDEAS, if you'd care to contribute. Sharing what we've found works for us often motivates others. I get a lot of good ideas from other members.

Thanks for your concern.

I have been in the house for two days, just listening to the wind, watching the leaves and pine needles fly and doing a window assessment. Had some water come in through the windowwell into the basement, but I put down towels to soak that up.

Last night I was on the computer after dinner and the power went out about six times. I went downstairs to get some candles. Finally I said, screw this after my computer booted up and then lost power for the sixth time. I went to bed at 9:15...tried to do a puzzle by candlellight but decided that I was no Abe Lincoln..

My area has not been hit as hard as those areas along the shore, but there are many downed trees and millions of people in Del., NJ. and PA with out power. I'll go out this afternoon, but many of the major highways are closed, schools and businesses are closed to keep people safe and off the streets while municipal crews do the clean up.

We managed to keep power on our little corner of Northern Virginia, but it's very wet and lots of trees down all around. My sister in Atlantic City has no phone or internet, but managed to keep power, a miracle in itself. They are waiting for a tree guy to cut down a tree about to fall on their house...again. They just recovered from a tree through the roof in June. I'm off to Walmart here shortly, still have to get candy for Halloween tomorrow. I get the usual Mounds and Almond Joys, which I won't eat on a bet.

Hope everyone is recovering from the storm.

I'm watching also. Joe has been texting his brother in Connecticutt and his mom and dad are all well. Lots of wind. But I'm reading that almost 3 million are without power already and so much flooding in so many places. I feel so sorry for them all.

We build and build, bigger and stronger and more, but Mother Nature is more powerful than us all. It's always so astounding how she just takes everything in her path now and then.

Power so far so good. Let's see how we do when the storm really hits tonight. The schools are all closed, the Federal Government is closed, all public transit is closed. My hubby needed labwork done in anticipation of seeing the endocrinologist next week, so we went to the hospital lab this morning. Staff was there but no walk in patients. In and out quickly.

I think I'll head to Wegman's, see if it's open. Can always use bananas.

Stay safe everyone!

Hey Team - thanks for the goodie.

New York's governor has declared state of emergency as well as our county executive. Schools, county offices, and the Community College closed. I am very concerned about a power failure as that would mean no sump pump if needed. I am trying not to obsess over things out of my control, but it is not helping all that much.

I think I am really losing it, as if I didn't know that already. I was reading a little bit ago. I couldn't fathom who this character was. Wasn't making sense to me. I turned back a few pages and realized I forgot I stopped reading another book because I didn't like it but still thought I was reading it. I guess that's what happens when you start about 5 books in a row and don't read much before deciding you don't really like it and go on to the next.

I seem to be on a rolll with books I don't care for. Wonder how far I'll get in this one before putting it down and going on to the next.

Some wind, some rain. Storms of this type usually disapate once they hit land as there is no water to pick up. Let's hope Frankenstorm is just scary weather.

Got the garden furniture in and oiled it down yeaterday with teak oil. My house now smells like fish. Had the windows open yesterday afternoon, but closed them at nightfall. May open them before the winds get too wild...either that or bring up my rod and reel to see what I can catch in the living room.

I love it when the US Weather station declares a national "holiday"

Thanks for the pumpkin Goodie, Team! Here in south west New Hampshire (near Keene) we are forecast to get some rain but the concern is for the high winds which may cause power outages. All the schools have closed for the day or at the least are releasing at noon today. It is just drizzling now and some mild wind gusts. Have gotten everything ready and are prepared, but hope we won't need the preparations. Hope everyone else in the path of Sandy is safe.

Thanks, team, for the pumpkin!

Re Sandy: Take care, everybody. We are getting wind and rain at the moment in Halifax but it seems to be veering towards Quebec and Ontario once it's through in the U.S. However, it could still make a turn this way after Quebec. One of the reasons forecasters are so worried is because it's so huge with a really wide path.

The local tv channel is saying we are going to have the worst this afternoon until midnight. The forecaster is saying yes we are going to have rain, heavy at times but the greater concern is the wind that may bring trees down on power lines - no power, may be out for days. Hopefully that won't happen where I am. I am looking forward to this being over.

Would you believe that we are having high winds in north Ga.? We have power outages in a part of my town near the hospital. We had to move limbs when we came home yesterday. This morning when my husband went to get the paper; there were more limbs down.
What we are having is nothing in comparison to my northern Spark friends.
We have family vacationing in Eastern Canada and New England. We are anxious to hear from them.

Karen, I am so glad that you had a wonderful Birthday!! You deserve it.

Karen sounds like you had good time.
Be careful and stay safe everyone in the storms path.
Our corporate office is in NJ, we had an emergency conference call last night at 8:00 pm to put together a plan for the next few days. They had shut down all metro and underground rail travel between NJ and other east coast states already along with all airports.
They are expecting the storm to start to hit after lunch and last 24 hours, if power goes out they anticipate it may be out 5/7 days.
Have a good day everyone.

Thank you all so much for the Birthday Wishes! I have had a great birthday weekend, which started about Thursday.

Naomi, I feel for you and all the others who are nervously awaiting the storm. Joe's family lives in Connecticut and last year they were without electricity for a long time after a storm. They have a generator now and are getting ready for what may come. His brother commutes to NYC for work. I heard the Amtrak and Metro were closed down tonight and tomorrow, then to be reassessed. Has anyone else heard that?

I hope it's all a false alarm and just blows away with little or no damage. Thinking of you all from down here in Texas.

Karen

It is so good to be home. I'm tired, but it was a good weekend. Mother is getting more feeble and will see her neurologist Tuesday. She is going to ask for some Physical therapy.
She is also getting her meds confused. We are working on that now.

All of you in the path of the storm are in my prayers. Please take care and update us whenever possible.

So,
could we have a moment of silence for the loss of 1.4 kg which occurred about a year ago?
Thanks.

Dinner was great but I was very impressed with the quality of the performance of the Brandywine Ballet Theatre's production of Dracula. Apparently each choreographer does his own thing, as this version was nothing like the clips I'd seen on the Internet. So much the better, mentee and I were pleasantly surprised.

Sandy headed here, possibly making landfall on Monday.

Our fellowship, being alongside a creek, is removing furniture and rugs from the first floor level, putting things on shelves and reinforcing garden plants to help them stay rooted, should the waters overflow the banks. Last year our building was hit by one hurricane and the following week by a flood...we spent lots of man-hours shoveling silt, drying out walls, removing walls and wallboard, repainting and buying new equipment to replace things that were damaged. We hope this doesn't happen again. But we are a little more prepared with forethought, sandbags and sealers.

I just put out the fall decor and now it looks like I've got to take it back in. This will give me an excuse to bring in and apply teak oil on the garden furniture and put the potted plants in a confined area.

Taking my mentee to a University tonight to see the ballet "Dracula" and out to dinner at a college gathering place. Think dinner will be more fun than the ballet.

I am getting prepared for Sandy. We have a generator so I don't have to worry about food or coffee, but if the power is out like it was after the derecho in June, supplies to the grocery stores may be affected for a week or more. We couldn't get gas back then: gas stations had no power, and the ones that did had no more gas because the tankers weren't getting in. My sister lives in Atlantic City, and some of her neighbors are just moving back into their houses after immense damage from the derecho. And here comes Frankenstorm.

Morning all.
After all our work this week the client postponed their trip to our offices on the east coast because of the predicted weather problems. Oh well I get to stay home also.
Karen I agree with the the other ladies it sounds like you are a good daughter, have a fun birthday trip.
Jeanne I saw Jersey Boys last year and loved it, would go again if it came back.
We have a chapter Halloween Lunch today which should be fun.
Stay safe everyone in the path of the storm.

Today is my mother's 90th birthday. I took her shopping and bought her 3 pair of shoes; then we went to lunch. Tomorrow my son is cooking ribs and chicken on the grill, I'm bringing the trimmings and picking up a chocolate ice cream birthday cake for her. We have another gift, wrapped, so she can have the fun of opening it, which she enjoys a lot.

Sunday, Joe is taking me to Austin for my birthday, and who knows what we'll do there, lol.

I try to be a good daughter, no matter what.

I've never driven a stick shift - I taught myself to drive by watching other people and, when someone handed me car keys the first time, I just got in and drove. Scary to think about now, but when you're 16 you believe you can do anything.

I'm in the decluttering mode but it's going slowly as my body insists I don't go too long between resting and watching a little TV. I am up to the last episode - #260 - of Murder, She Wrote. I am trying to make myself get rid of VHS tapes - at least all that are available on DVD or streaming. I still have a 12" TV with a built in VHS player so I can watch them one last time if I feel like it. I have a tape of Oprah's show on the 9/11 attack that I don't think I've ever watched. Perhaps I don't need to watch it.

Yes, Ruth, water is my number one, also. Living in the desert, I appreciate the fact that I can turn a knob and water flows freely. And we need that water to make the coffee - which is a close second!

Jersey Boys was wonderful, except for the 2 hour drive home afterwards. Nothing happened in the return trip. Just fatigue. I am no longer a late-night party animal. Hummmmm I probably never was. We did love the old music and the story of Frankie Valli's success. Yes, Sandra. This was my second time seeing the play, but won't be the last.

I'm tending my granddaughter's puppy tonight (is this a great grandpuppy?) while she goes to ScaryWood (a halloween event at the amusement park near here). She is going with my daughter (her aunt) Kelli and both of their boyfriends. It is about 2 hours away (like Jersey Boys), so it will be a late night for them and I worry about the weather. Snow is in the air.

I slept late so time to get going--trying to declutter, too, Penny.

Have a good Friday and weekend.

Isn't it odd that while so many are filling their houses with just about everything under the sun there's another group who are getting rid of all excess stuff? I'm really grateful for the people who want what we're trying to get rid of. Bill's still going thru the craft room & passing on what he doesn't want/need. It surprizes him to find something that he'd forgotten all about. Sonn I'll be able to get to my stuff. I plan on really getting rid of as much as i can.

It was 85 yesterday & got down to 35 last night. The highest today is 53. The wind is really strong & has been for several days. Supposed to be a big frost tonight & tomorrow night.

Hope everyone has a good & safe day!

Things I don't want to live without: WATER

I have lived without electricity, gas, telephones, computers, cars, all manners of appliances but the one thing I missed most when I did not have it was water. When I lived in Mexico I suffered for years without enough water. I used to take my toothbrush to work so I could brush my teeth. We had to take baths at the public baths, wash at the laundromat, and cook with what little water would trickle through the pipes into the cistern. When we had enough water we took our baths with what we could fill into a Dutch Oven. It is no surprise to me that the next wars on this planet will be fought over Water, not oil or ores.

I get my coffee from my Keruig, which I love! I keep an old Mr. Coffee for backup.

When I read these sci-fi "end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it" novels, I KNOW the first thing I don't want to live without is toilet paper, lol.

Sandy looks to be a coming problem, sort of like Irene was last year: floods and power failures. I do my usual grocery store runs on Fridays and Mondays, but I think the stores will be mobbed in the usual anticipation of stocking up. Better hit Starbucks, too. Life without coffee, even for half a day, isn't worth living.

I hope everyone is ready by Sunday.

Good point about farm wives, Karen.
I think things can go haywire if they split up, But,otherwise, they are wonderful examples of partnership!

Never drove a stick shift and never plan to.

Walking on the crossway across the Hudson River later this morning. The day is not completely clear but should be good in spite of that. The view is spectacular. Of course, we will be going for lunch after the walk.

Getting very nervous about this Sandy Storm. If it is anything like Irene I could be in big trouble. When I had the drains put in my basement last year, the salesman said with Irene I could have run into trouble anyway. The pump might not have been able to keep up. I know I'm borrowing trouble right now but listening to the predictions has me crazy.

I also learned to drive on a stick shift, and remember well those jumpy, jerky starts, lol. I do think everyone should know how to drive a stick, you never know when you might NEED to drive one, but also, sometimes it's just fun. Joe has a stick shift, but I drive an automatic now. My sons started driving tractors and farm equipment when they were about 9 yrs old, so they always knew how to drive everything, the way farm/country boys (and wives) always do.

You know, when equality in jobs for women was a big, new issue, I always thought, farm wives have ALWAYS been equal. They got to work like a man all the time.

Well, we are leaving this morning to visit my mother for the weekend. I just hope it goes well.
We will get to see my darling great niece. She had her 4th birthday. My nephew is bringing her over Saturday afternoon for a visit. I have her birthday gift.
Maybe my niece will bring her 3 boys over to visit. She does sonograms and works on the weekends at times.

Enjoy your weekend.

Morning all
I learnt to drive on a stick as the UK did not have automatic until the 60's.
I prefer auto now because of my bad, changing gears really puts a lot of stress on it.
Sounds like you have all had a busy few days, we are working on a new presentation at work so that is where all my focus has been. Doing a final run through today.
Tomorrow my RH chapter is having a Halloween lunch should be fun.
Have a good day all.

Ruth, the cooking class sounds like it would be so much fun for the kids.

Jeanne, enjoy the show. I learned to drive on a stick shift. My children all know how to drive a stick shift. It is good to know how but I like my automatic. We still have the first car we bought in 1965, a ford falcon. a real oldie.

Good Afternoon:

Finished my grocery shopping this morning. Total was less than the 400 $ anticipated, but then I forgot many items. Will have to pick them up next time.

Both my son a d I have high cholesterol and we need to cut down drastically on items that contribute to this clogging of the arteries.

Re stick shifts: I learned to drive on an automatic but had to learn to drive a stick while living in Latin America...or I would have been dependent on others, taxis and buses. When I got back here a manual transmission was fine for four cars. Then when I got my rag top it only came with automatic, so I am back to an automatic, and I really don't mind it, except that it uses more gasoline and is not very economic.

Tuesday night I took the mentee and her brother to volunteer for the Creepy Crawly Hallowe'en Cooking class. Well, because it was for kids it's wasn't cooing so much as assembling. But it was fun decorating powdered sugar donuts to look like eyeballs, rolling out bread, smearing it with peanut butter, rolling it to look like a finger, then decorating it with red jam "blood." Kids also assembled spiders made of cookies and pretzel sticks and made a monster mash dirty pudding with chunks of crushed Oreos and gummy worms in prepared pudding. So sorry, gals, no eye of newt stew recipes this year.

Sandra - time for your own dog???

Jeanne – Enjoy Jersey Boys

I saw Nice Work If You Can Get It. It was just wonderful. I went with 3 friends and of course anticipated we would enjoy it but not as much as we did. The costumes, set design, actors, all great. I didn't expect it to be as funny as it was. We all had a great day in spite of the dank drizzle weather.

Off to meet a friend for lunch and then some shopping. Want to buy a tablecloth for my daughter for her anniversary. I guess I should have said, since it's an anniversary present, for my daughter and son-in-law.

Have a good rest of the day.

I used to love standard transmission but am now happy to leave it behind. Halifax is a very hilly place and I was beginning to get nervous when people pulled up too close behind me. Also, I don't own a car and only drive a friend's car occasionally or rent a car to keep up with driving.

So, it's your second time with Jersey Boys, Jeanne! I understand. When I really like something, I can see it over and over.

Karen: a lovely accolade for Kay. I agree!

Back from my trip with friend. In the end, I was very tired. I'm not used to being with somebody for three days straight and the talking (including my own) eventually tires me out. We had a great visit with her brother and sister-in-law (one British and one French). He is very musical--has a baby grand and two organs++ and played us some of his own compositions. As well, he collects and repairs old radios including many beautiful consoles where the radio is not apparent.

And they had a "puppy" which is a new breed of Shepherd. As I've never had a dog (except for my two "grand-dogs"), I was at first intimidated by his size and his teeth but we became good pals and he followed me around. I was quite amazed by that. I am definitely smitten!

Jeanne, I have never had an automatic transmission. Our 3 oldest kids drive sticks. Some is for $$ reasons, for the rest of us it's because we actually like to drive. I LOVE the comfort of having engine braking. My youngest son drove a stick until he married, and his wife only learned to drive when she was 30. Same with our oldest son's wife, and she, too, prefers automatic.

I gave my granddaughter a short driving lesson yesterday afternoon. I have a standard transmission and she wanted to learn the clutch. She did quite well for the first time. I think I jerked the car for miles when I first started to learn. Her father, my son, went back to his bicycle when I first tried to get him to drive the clutch car. I always told my kids, they need to learn to drive the clutch just in case of an emergency and that is the ONLY car they have. All of them now have standard transmission cars of their own.

We are going to Jersey Boys tonight. I saw it in Las Vegas the firsts time and LOVED it, so we decided to go see it again on its tour through Spokane. Dentist, dog groomer and gym first, however. Busy day.

Thanks Karen. That made me feel so good.
I was kidding about being recognized. We thought it amusing that they called so many on the stage or had them stand-up. Some need that, and I'm glad they received it for the work they do for our state.

I'm drinking my morning coffee, and I've read the paper. I will also be glad when all the political news is gone.
After my coffee, I'm going to do some aerobics. Maybe that will get me going.

Kay, Just know you are recognized here! You are such a busy, involved leader. I remember when you first became co-leader. You've come such a long way!

Hey, even though I've never met you, I would "recognize" you anywhere, lol. In any sense of the word.

Good Afternoon all:

Thanks for the input on the flu and shingles vaccines. Judy your informed thoughts are most helpful.

Well, today is the day.

I have finally cleaned out my freezer and most of the refrigerator. This morning my son helped me with a major cleaning of the two, and I am now getting all my ducks, paper and on-line coupons, in order before I hit the grocery store on Senior discount Wednesday.
This is like moving into a new house or apartment; getting down to basics before shopping. It will be interesting to see how much I spend. I am guessing it will be near the $400 mark, but then that does not include bread (which I purchase at the bread/bakery) or produce (which I purchase at the green grocer) or speciality items (which my health food conscious son wants) at the Whole Foods/Trader Joe store. This will be an education; because when we buy weekly or a little-here-a little there- we do not really add up what we truly spend on groceries each month. emoticon

We had a nice breakfast in The Temple in Atlanta. Do you remember the Temple that was bombed in the 50's? It was the Temple in the movie Driving Miss Daisy. It's was built around 1854. All of it was not damaged. The room we were in was beautiful. I would loved to have toured the entire building.
The program was very good. It was really an Interfaith group. A Rabbi gave the opening blessing and a Muslim gave the closing prayer. There were hundreds of people there. There were many Jewish members, Muslims, Protestants, Unitarians, Catholics, etc.
The speaker gave a good take on taking care of all children, especially those that fall through the cracks.
So many elected officials, appointed officials, board members, companies were recognized.
For some reason, they didn't recognize me. I still enjoyed all of it. I think my husband enjoyed it.

Judy, I have missed both you AND your wisdom. Where have you been in our beautiful Northwest? We spent a couple weeks at Pacific City, OR in late September/early October, but the cold has set in quite early here at home, and I imagine in Walla Walla as well. Welcome back! A question: I had that REALLY awful respiratory bug a week or two ago, so I decided NOT to get the shot this year (I got the bug the day before I was going in for the shot) since I had the virus already. Wise or foolish? Good food for thought on the shingles vaccine, too.

I went to my second aerobics (water) class yesterday and they had canceled it because the heater in the pool malfunctioned. Water was FREEZING. So I did not pass up the opportunity and stayed to try working on some of their machines. Hope it is fixed by Thursday, my next class. I really did enjoy the first one.

Went to the gym and will be going into NYC to see the show Nice Work If you Can Get it. Too bad it's a dreary drizzly day.

Was talking to my gym friend, who is also a nurse, she got the shingles shot recently and she recommends it also.

Kay, When my husband used to go to functions with me, he would always tell me at the beginning of the dinner, luncheon, breakfast, etc., if we needed to stop at McDonald's on the way home. lol. One look at the plate and he knew.

I'm going to Tai Chi this morning, and then hoping to make it to swimming right after.

Have a great day!
