sometimes there is something really significant to write on your status, like the birth of a grandchild or a fabulous vacation or a new adventure and sometimes it's just something like enjoying a rest day or a day at a spa

As far as "status" you get one sparkpoint for saying anything. You can click under the wheel (update today's status with the results of your spin) or just anything that may be going on today. It's mostly an extra point thing.

Kay Sometimes we need those lazy days. They feel best when it is raining outside. Just cuddle in with a good book. I hope you feel better soon

Thanks for info on how to post status. What kinds of things do you write there?

Ruth, I am so glad about the new job for your son.

The Buddy Holly show would be my kind of music.

Mary, you can also update status on your Spark Page and Spark point page.

Our son is not hear yet. I'm slowly getting ready.

I haven't felt good since yesterday afternoon. I want to feel like eating so I've been lazy and taking it easy.

Good Morning.

Son is officially beginning new job today (last two weeks were training). He was up early and even made me coffee. I, in turn, packed him lunch since he is on a "diet." (135 lbs and 5'10" tall.)

This afternoon a friend and I are going into Philadelphia to see "Buddy Holly" on the stage. Heard it is a rollicking good show for seniors (who remember the music).

Have great weekend, everyone.

There is a little box under your status the says "update status". It only works for me when I am on my start page, though.

We have had a surplus of rain this year. Last year Houston was dry for about 6 months. This year we get rain about every 3 days. Everything is thriving. It is as if we have gone from desert conditions to rain forest conditions. However, not one person is complaining about the rain. Once you have a sampling of a terrible drought, you bless every drop of the liquid gold. It helps with the temperature too.

Viv-enjoy your trip to NJ. Have family there. Rather hot right now.
Have a good day all.

I really want to see that movie. We have a new theatre near us. Maybe it's playing there.

Viv, have a good trip.

Barbie, we got one inch of rain last night, but not a bad storm. We needed that rain.

Karen, it's so frustrating when technology goes down. What did we do a few years ago when we had just black/white TV.

Our son is coming home today, and we are going to one of my favorite Fish Markets for dinner.

Have a good weekend.

We saw the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and liked it so much that we decided to buy it when it comes out on DVD.

We awoke this morning to thunder and lightning which is very unusual for where we live .....the storm has continued all day and has scared the dogs.

Karen, if you have wifi in the house, you may need to upgrade your router. We had an old one that was classified R and the new ones are classified N (for new LOL) and they have a stronger signal and can handle more wifi devices, such as a smart phone, tablet, etc. When Comcast came out to correct something on our system the repairman suggested we upgrade to an N and to get a Netgear or Linksy We got the Netgear at Walmart for $5 less than Best Buy and there was a real human being to help me through the installation steps when I got stumped. Just an idea.

Sleep good all.

My phone and internet has been almost non-existent this week. I have techs out 4 out of 5 days. Frustration! Time Warner Cable is installing a new modem in my house on Monday. Fingers crossed, lol.

I'm off today to the llibrary, take my son to the dentist, meet with my mentee for lunch, then donate blood in the afternoon. Hope I can fit in a late day swim. The outdoor pool at the Y doesn't open until 1 pm, so there is not promise of getting in my favorite exercise until the afternoon. Actually I find that going late in the afternoon when all the kids and their moms are leaving makes the pool dellightfully senior-friendly.

Today has been a housecleaning day, and I'm not through yet. Clean sheets are on the bed, etc. Soon I have to tackle the kitchen.

We are meeting another SIL for lunch as a salad bar. They have such a variety of healthy choices. I do eat a small homemade blueberry muffin to get my brain food. It is delicious.

Have a great day.

A story of a miracle, how Brookwood got their chapel:

BW has never had a mortgage. The lady who started it, Mrs Streit, does not believe in using donations for interest payments. A young man began going to BW and the neighbor noticed such a change in his behaviour that she asked the mom about it. The mother explained about BW and how great it was for her son. So that Christmas, the neighbors, Mr and Mrs Joe Mundy, sent BW $20,000. Obviously, BW made a connection with these generous donors. The next Christmas they sent $50,000 and the following Christmas they sent $75,000. Mrs. Streit and the Mundy's became very good friends. The following Christmas they were out to dinner and Mr. Mundy asked Mrs. Streit what BW needed. She replied that BW was God centered and needed a chapel. He took out his check book and wrote her a $1,000,000 check. Obvious the chapel is named after the Mundy's. Mr Mundy has passed away, but Mrs. Mundy is still very active in BW affairs. I think that is a beautiful story to match our beautiful chapel.

Ruth – I did not know about the banning of Mah Jongg. We’ll have to take cover if we hear that knock on the door. I do enjoy playing very much.

Mo – great news about your daughter.

Mary – thanks for informing us about Brookwood – sounds like a wonderful place

Viv – very interesting about the water. The 2 I was aware of was when you get up and before eating. Though before eating I thought was to fill you up so you didn’t eat as much.

Have a good day!

Mary, I grew up in Houston and moved when I was about 23. Now I'm in Central Texas.

Your story about the impact of smile seen when you were young is interesting. When I was about the same age, I was riding a city bus from the rural area around Houston to the downtown area. The bus was packed and people were standing. I saw another young girl get up and give her seat to an older woman. That made a TERRIFIC impact on me. I think it was the first time I realized that I could/should do things for others.

To this day, I remember that girl giving up her seat so an older person could sit down. My first lesson in being considerate and becoming aware that there are other people in the world!

Thanks for the reminder.

Viv, thanks for the interesting facts about water! I already do all those things. I love water and have no problem drinking about 11 eight ounce glasses each day. Definitely first thing in the morning and right before bed. I have a glass of water in my hand all the time.

Heart Attack and Water - I never knew this ! Interesting.......

Heart Attack & Water

Something I didn't know either! I asked my Doctor why do I and other
people urinate so much at night time?

Answer from my Cardiac Doctor =
Gravity holds water in the lower part of your body when you are upright
(legs swell). When you lie down and the lower body (legs and etc) seeks
level with the kidneys it is then that the kidneys remove the water
because it is easier. This then ties in with the last statement!

I knew you need your minimum water to help flush the toxins out of your
body, but this was news to me.

Correct time to drink water... Very Important. From A Cardiac Specialist!

Drinking water at a certain time maximizes its effectiveness on the
body:

2 glasses of water after waking up - helps activate internal organs

1 glass of water 30 minutes before a meal - helps digestion

1 glass of water before taking a bath - helps lower blood pressure

1 glass of water before going to bed - avoids stroke or heart attack

Please pass this to the people you care about......

I can also add to this... My Physician told me that water at bed time
will also help prevent night time leg cramps. Your leg muscles are
seeking hydration when they cramp and wake you up with a Charlie Horse.

Mary, Brookwood sounds like a wonderful facility for adults. It's difficult to find those places for adults. I've visited several.

I agree with you and Karen about being happy. Sometimes it's work, but it makes such a difference with ourselves and others.

Yesterday, before we were leaving for the visitation, a friend called, and she just wanted to gossip. I'm glad that I had a reason to get off the phone.

Today I'm have lunch with some teacher friends. We usually just share about updates in our lives. It is usually pleasant. Sometimes if one has a problem, they will share. We are all friends.

Karen, I feel that I am a happy or maybe contended person also. Life is good even though there have been knocks. When I was 12 years old, my family went to the White House in Wash DC. While we were in line, the guard, who I can picture perfectly 55 years later, stood there with this beautiful smile, not a grin, just a smile on his face. It fascinated me and at that young age I decided that I was going to go through life with a smile on my face like him. I find it interesting how that brief encounter left such an impact on me. The man just seemed contended and I wanted to be like that too. However, only problem with all the smiles through the years is that it does leave laugh lines. LOL

Nomi, thank you for asking about Brookwood. Absolute love the place. It is a facility for disabled adults. They take no federal or state $ and therefore are God centered. They have 47 greenhouses, and a ceramic and stonecasting workshop. All the citizens work and feel like worthwhile people. In addition they make 5 dressings which several HEB's in Houston sell for us. They also have a wonderful Cafe with a chef who graduated from the culinary school in Hyde Park, NY. Citizens work in the cafe too. Of course, all with help. You can google information about them at www.brookwoodcommunity.org/

Next time I write, I will tell you how they got the $ for their chapel. A glorious story!

Pleasant dreams all! emoticon

I think you're right about optimism and happiness. I know people that won't be happy, ever, and others that are happy from the minute they get up until they go to bed. It's hard to live with a negative person. My glass is half full. We had a neighbor man that was negative, the kids called him Eore. (that's not spelled right)

This has been a very busy, but a good day. My SIL invited me to lunch. We also browsed at two large antique stores. I made two purchases that were very reasonable. We both enjoyed looking at some of the prices that the dealers were charging for household items that we had or our mothers used daily.

Then I came home to take a bath and change clothes. My neighbor that was 89 died early Tuesday morning with a massive stroke. We went to the visitation.
I have plans for tomorrow, and will not be able to attend the service. She had not lived here very long, but she was a sweet person.

Interesting. I was fairly poor for most of my life and lived under some opressive conditions. Happy anyway. And now that I think of it, I knew several people in the same condition, still do, who were/are happy in spite of those conditions.

At any rate, I'm grateful to be happy. I guess like my SP page says, I believe Happiness is an inside job.

Karen:

I believe that happiness is a state of awareness.

If we choose not to read, not to educate ourselves, not to be concerned about the state of the state, the state of our fellow man, the state of the world than we can be blissfully happy. The less we know the easier it is to be happy. The more we know the more we worry about solving the problems, our own and others.

Some persons can look at all these problems and see solutions, others will look at them and see doom.

Are you equating optimism with happiness and pessimism with unhappiness? Or are you equating wealth and well-being with happiness and the lack of it for unhappiness?

How we view the world could be dependent upon how much of its wealth we share. It is easier to be happy when you have a roof over your head and a full belly. But you can also have these things and not be happy because of your concern for those who do not have these necessities.

But if happiness is a state of mind, a relative thing that might not have anything to do with our well being but with our belief system, then those who have a faith that they will achieve paradise in another world or another life can be happy to bear the pain of this one.

You may not be able to help everyone, but if you help someone to relieve their pain and suffering, then you are doing your part.

Happiness is a state of awareness, not to be confused with luck.

Mo, I am happy that everything is going well for your daughter.

My glass is also half full. It's not fun to be miserable. Being happy around others spreads.

I got surprise phone call from our RE agent today - DD's offer was accepted as it was the highest( by $400). Now we have to get estimates on repairs and go from there. Homepath Renovation financing will let her finance the repairs, too. It all gets bundled into the home's final price at a very low interest rate. She will be moving from a 2bdrm, 1 bath, 800 sq.ft apartment into a 3 bdrm, 2 bath 1800 Sq ft home with garage and she'll be paying a bit less every month. Though her utilities will be higher, of course. She'll also get great deductions for her taxes.
Happy Dance emoticon emoticon

I weigh every day out of habit and the scale has been going in the wrong direction for months. I starting counting calories today and have done well. I need to lose about 25 pounds to feel good in my body again.

Karen - I think I am a happy, mostly positive person. My glass is more than half full!

Hi Everyone,

I've been without phone, internet and cable TV for about 2 days. And have had some bad luck that turned out well.

About a week ago my car battery cracked and sort of exploded. Fortunately my car was in the garage and not on a freeway in Austin. Joe took me to the local auto store to get a battery and installed it for me.

Yesterday, I backed out of the garage and my right front tire was flat! Again, I feel fortunate that I was at home.(I always see those poor folks on the side of the highway having car trouble and say a prayer for them.) I've been a AAA member for 15 yrs and never used their service, but I called them and there was someone at my house in 5 minutes! The tire was changed in less than 10 minutes. He told me the tire was ruined, but today I took it in to the place I use for all my car service and they repaired it easily for only $12. So my bad luck could have been much worse.

All my electronics are working again which always makes me happy, lol. I've thought about it a lot lately and decided that I'm just an inherently happy person. Water seeks it's own level and my level is happy. Yes I have problems and worries but that doesn't seem to change my happiness in any meaningful way. And yes, I'm very happy about this, lol.

I'm sure we all know people who seem to be inherently UNhappy. I have a mother like that and have known others who are the same. There doesn't seem to be anything you can do for people like that, no matter how often you try.

Do you think we are born this way, or is it a learned behavior? I feel badly for people who are always unhappy, always see the glass as half empty when I know it's half full. I haven't ever been successful in making much of a change in people like that. Have you?

Wishing you all a very HAPPY day!

Karen

Sharon and Anne, it's good to hear from you.
Anne, may we borrow some of your rain. It is so dry here.

Sharon, I am at goal weight, but it took a few years. Sometimes I eat foods that I shouldn't, but I really try to watch portion size. If my husband has a hamburger with french fries, I might eat 3. Some fries are especially good.

After panels, I was really hungry, so I went to Red Lobster. It was next to a department store that I was going to shop in for a few items. I ordered a starter. Nothing comes with the starter, but the waitress brought me 3 of their cheese biscuits right away. I was so hungry that I ate one. I brought the rest home for my husband. That was real willpower for me. I could have eaten another one.

I'll see what damage I did in the morning. I did walk several miles today.

Hello Everyone:

Naomi: Did you know that Chairman Mao banned Mah Jong in China? I do not know if it was ever disbanded and whether it has regained its popularity. You seem pretty "addicted" to it. Must be fun! Just watch out for the Red Guard knocking on your door and confiscating all your tiles.

Good morning, fellow Sparkers!!! We're enjoying rain again today; was much needed here in S'East Texas. I too weigh most every morning & like Kay, it's a habit with me even tho I'm at the maintaining stage.

I've not done my exercise walking lately because I was helping hubby in his garden--picking veggies & then shelling peas. Hopefully will get back to my exercise walking soon.

Everyone have a Sparky Day!!!

Sharon, Kay, I weigh every day, too, but I am at goal. I think the reason for weighing once a week is to prevent the discouragement over the inevitable ups and downs of daily weight, and progress is always measured on a long graph. If it is just a point of measurement without any emotional baggage, I don't see a problem. But just like I, personally, cannot eat certain foods at all, ever, because they trigger cravings that I have trouble controlling, weighing can be a trigger to unhelpful responses. We are all different and we have to accept and adapt to our own limitations whatever they may be.
