Prayers to all of you with health problem, family problems, and the loss of love ones. Amazing when you read the chit chat all the life drama that is going on in everyone's life. Some happy and some profoundly sad.

Ruth, sounds as if you found a little angel in Marie. How beautiful.

Penny, I know you will be waiting for your GS to come home. Tell him thank you from all your SP friends for helping keep us safe. Hats off to him. You must be proud.

Judy K---how did you get a hole in your stomach? Silver lining, bet you lost a few pounds. Hard way to do it!

Best to all of you. Love reading your stories.

Ruth, Sorry you lost your purchases on the bus transfer. That was disappointing not to have the drums for the children. Maria sounds like an angel. It is hard to believe that someone so young has the capacity for such caring. I hope she is placed in a good home. I guess taking private transportation is safer, but not nearly as colorful. Thanks for sharing your weekend.

Hello Everyone;

Judy--hope you can get back int the groove and lose the weight from that medical intervention. It´s tough when medicines and sitting around in the hospital without any exercise throw our lives and weight out of whack.

The hotel in Chichicastenango was lovely, had a fireplace in the room, which I took advantage of to take the chill off the night air. I went to sleep to the crackle and pop of wood burning in the chiminea...lulled me to sleep quickly.

After breakfast on Sunday I took off for the market. Bought two cane ¨drums¨, a rain maker and was bargaining for maracas, but the people offering them thought I was an idiot with too much money in my pockets. On second thought, the maracas were painted brightly, and probably not with non-toxic paint, so it is best that I didn´t buy them, because these kids put everything in their mouth, it´s a way of experienceing the world.

The day was bright and sunny, perfect for shopping out of doors. I even picked up a colorful belt for my sun and an eyeglasses retainer for myself among the many things I bought.

On the bus ride home I had to stand for about 40 kilometers, but the good thing about this trip back, as opposed to the one to Chichicastenango, was that the bus was packed like sardines and there was no where to roll around with the curves and the bumps. However, about 15 kilometers from Xela the bus abruptly stopped and everyone was told to get off and take another bus. In the confusion I forgot to get the package with all my purchases, so all was lost.

On the bright side, I have made a vow to myself to avoid these chicken buses, not because of the overcrowding, but because of the complete irreverence the bus drivers have for the lives of those that they are transporting. It will cost more, and I won´t get that ¨local¨flavor, but I hope to come back home in one piece.

(side note, I am in an internet cafe right now and there is a funeral procession passing by, with a four piece band playing funeral dirges while the processionairs walk their way to the cemetery behind the band and casket of the deceased. No hearses or horse drawn carriages here.)

It was back to the orphnage this morning, sans percussion instruments, but with some new books and a few new games. The kids are so responsive. They are open to anything new, but I have to remember to give them time to play on their own as that is as much an important art of their development as playing games in groups.

There were several new children added over the weekend and a few that I didn´t see today. As a volunteer I am not privy to their placements, whether they were reunited with their parent (s) or a family member or placed with a foster family until they find a permanent home, either via adoption or a full time institutional living situation.

One little girl was crying and I thought she was saying Ï want my mamita¨,¨and I took her aside and explained how I knew she was sad, but that all the children with her were in the same situation, missing their mothers or fathers, and that the best she could do was to have fun with the others while she waited for a solution. She seemed to be cheerier after that, as I am sure that she never thought that all the others were there without their parents, so deep was her grief and sadness.

I want to tell you about Maria, a little three year old who has more compassion than one might think possible for such a little girl. Maria went to the little girl who was crying and smoothed her brow and gave her kisses. The other day I observed her taking the hand of another child who was scared to go on the sliding board, she led him up the stairs, went down first, then waited at the bottom to catch him. She repeated this throughout the morning until the little boy was actually smiling when he went down the slide. I don´t know where kids so young have all this caring for others and not the ¨me first¨attitude, but she has the mark of a person with great compassion and feeling for others.

Each child has his or her own traits, and eventually I might be able to write of some of the others. I am so lucky to be here, because little ones like Maria, just make my day.

Take care, everyone. Hasta la proximo..

I went to the doctor today & they still don't know why I passed out. She just told Bill that I could do what I wanted & just to keep an eye on me. Also that it'd take awhile to get my strength back. I'm hoping that I can finish this year without any more medical issues.

My GS's on his way to Texas fo begin his Air Force career. Friday, my DD laughed at me when I started crying when I hugged him good-bye. Guess what she did today when he left?
He's never been gone on Thanksgiving or Christmas. And I do intend to write him.

It's almost 80 & the winds really high. There's a tornado in the state.now.

I'm tired so will close out. Ruth, you take care of your self & have some fun. emoticon

Hello all. Late for me today. Had lots of errands to run. The good thing is ALL my Christmas shopping is done!! Oh, I do pick up thing during the year, so it's not that bad. 2 weeks ago I pulled everything out & sorted through it. Then made a list of what was needed & have completed that!! Now I can start on next years emoticon

JudyK - healing thoughts coming your way. Sounds like you had a really rough time!!

JudyTN - your comment about feeling bloated with eating 1600 calories -- you might want to check & see what those calories consist of. There may be some foods in there that you'll need to eliminate or substitue??

Well, need to put things away. Waves to all & wishing everyone a GREAT day!!!

I drove with a friend who had to be in a town 45 minutes away. Once we got there she only had to sign a couple of papers which took all of 10 minutes. It was an enjoyable 90 minutes of driving and talking. I have an appointment this afternoon and plan to walk sometime in between.

Kay - will definitely keep your cousin in my prayers. I hope you get all your house projects completed today.

JudyK - what an awful ordeal you've been through! I'm glad you're recovering and will add you to my prayers too.

Hope everyone has a good day!

JudyLK, I hope that you feel better soon. Take care of yourself.

Judy, I'm glad you found some bargains. I only have a few more gifts to buy.

After my exercise and breakfast, I'm going to work on the house. I didn't finish the study. That's my main project along with a few others.

Have a great Monday!

A busy day for me. Went to Church and Sunday School. We played bells during the worship and my Mission Committee served fellowship coffee time. Then dh and I went shopping! We bought a new washer and dryer as my dryer is groaning every time I turn it on! (and it takes FOREVER to dry stuff!) They will come Sat. Then we went to Penney's and did some birthday/Christmas shopping. Had a 20% off coupon--that helped a lot! As they totaled up the bill, they told me I saved more than I spent! This was on top of putting new tires on the van on Friday! We're broke!

My whole whirl wind started on October 29. I was feeling great. Biking up to 6-8 miles five times a week and then, that afternoon I had horrible stomach pain. I never have stomach pain. At the ER, they told me they thought I had a hole in my stomach and was taken to emergency surgery. My pencil size hole was repaired but I was so hypovolemic they had to give me fluids to get my BP up. Three days of that and I was up to 195# from 167#. The docs thought I would
get rid of it but not before taxing my heart into failure. After ten days, I am home. This is the first day I felt like looking at the computer. I treasure life. I am blessed to have such wonderful friends and family. We just never know. I really enjoy reading all the Sparker,s messages. I bought the cook book and was planning on making some things from it when this happened. Your friend JudyK emoticon

It's been a busy Sunday and I'm just getting a chance to chat.

Jo Ann - have fun during your stay in CA. Spending the winter in a warmer climate would be awesome. I know Judy (TN/FL) is also a snowbird.

Ruth - I enjoy reading about your experiences so much! Your descriptions make me feel like I'm right there with you.

Mo - I hope you find something you're satisfied with for the bowl ceremony.

Rosalyn - hugs to you! Your son does sound like he's going to be very busy.

Hopefully I'll be able to chat earlier in the day tomorrow. Have a good evening!

Hello Sparker's. It is late in the afternoon. Usually I post in the morning, but believe it or not I actually slept until it was light outside. What a Shock. Then I had to get started on Sunday things and just did not get to the computer for doing messages.
Ruth, I really appreciate your taking the time to detail your trip and what your doing. You bring the little town to life and I can picture the market with fruits and vegetables and all manner of things to buy. I remember when I was in Italy and we would go to market on the weekends. We would bargain and get the best price possible, or so we thought. I really missed bargaining when I got back to the states. They just don't do it here.
It is very warm here in Florida today. In the 80's and I a perspiring, but I refuse to turn on the air. It's November after all.
Hope everyone has a good week and please stay healthy.

Hello Gals
Just letting you know that the Memorial went well.
I lot of sadness and crying of course, but to be expected.
There was lots of exrta people there and they had to add a lot of chairs.
The worst of course will be the next year when Our Son and 3 Geandsons try to ajust. My Son said he wil take over her Truck Insurance Sales Business and see how it goes.
He is going to be very busy indeed, doing his own Dental Lab as well.
I don't know???? Hugs Rosalyn

I have had a very lazy day - lots of computer games and mindless TV watching..
A few phone calls to check in with family and friends. - some research on the internet for the burning bowl ceremony at church on New year's Eve. I offered to take on the logistics of it this year after a cry for help from the minister. I don't think I have a great procedure in mind yet and will keep looking.

Ruth - I am so enjoying your adventures. Your descriptions are marvelous.

Hello everyoneñ

Today I got up early and went to the chicken bus terminal to take the locals bus to Chichicastenango. I walked about a block to get the taxi, then another 50 steps from the taxi to the bus, but when I got here my pedometer had marked 1.45 miles, I guess the ride was bumpy enough and curvy enough to mark those bumps as steps. Now my question is, since I did not walk very much, does the bumping around on the bus count as exercise? My pedometer says I burned244 calories? Did I?

Well that ride was certainly thrilling, serpentine roads all the way, lots of sleeping policement ?speed bumps₧ in one area, and a macho bus driver who wanted to make time by passing on curves. We almost crashed into another bus. By the time I got here I needed a stiff drink, but settled for almuerzo main meal, instead.

I am staying in the most beautiful hotel, a large central courtyard with two fountains and gently curing aches surround the gardens. There are azaelas and birds of paradise in bloom, nad I even saw a pointsetta tree in bloom today.

This little mountain town is just a dusty little market town, but its Thursday and Sunday markets sell everything imaginable, livestook, eggs, fruits vegetables, car parts, textiles, souveni5rs and more.

Aft lunch, I got in my veggies, mashed potatoes, carrots and green beans and a brocolli salad, a slice of water melon and soup adorned with fresh avocado. It is the most vegetables I have had in a week. I am really going to tke advantage of being away from my hostess home and get in much needed nutrition. Sheçs a lovely person and a good cook, but I have had more eggs, tortillas and black beans in the last week to definitely need a break from them on weekends.

After a siesta I went into the main square and watched men installing the wooden stalls for tomorrowçs market. Their palms were red from twisting twine around the woodens poles to make a stable stall. Then they covered them with plastic drop cloths to protect the merchandise from the sun, dust and rain. Tomorrow night they will take down the stalls, and then put them up again on Wednesday for Thirsdayçs market. Seems like a lot of work, but I suppose in a third world country it gives people work being a stall installer.

I have already seen some purses I want an a blue jeans type embroidered shirt -like one I bought here 35 years ago- that I will definitely be bargaining for. I have also seen some childrençs rain makers and reed drums that would be great for a music lesson. Maybe, if I am lucky I can find a childrençs CD with canciones in Spanish that they will like.

This apparently is a great place for bargaining and I pan to rub their elbows and get great things for the nursery.

Well itis dark now and time to head out to a restaurant for a snack and then off to bed. I have to rest up for a day of shopping and the bumpy ride back home.

Jeanne. I think your plans for Thansgiving Christmas sound wonderful. You will really get to have double holidays.

Viv, thatnks for the flowers.

CopperPenny, hope youçre feeling better.

Celeste, I know you love the snow, but I am sure my friend in New Hartford is dreading it.

Take care everyone.

We had snow last night, what a beautiful sight this morning. Not in the forecast at all. We live at sea level. Ha! Ha! It has melted and we are having rain. Dh and I are finishing up our arrangements for our trip to CA. We won't return until April. I'll miss our WA home. My friend tripped and fell on our Fri. walk and I walked her home and stayed for a while. She lives alone and is very active but I was a little worried about her. She is fine, just a couple of bruises and bumps.
Jeanne, I know what you mean about making arrangements for the grandchildren, they are so worth it. I would miss mine if I didn't see them during the holidays. My 11 yr. old granddaughter is with her dad on Christmas and his family. But we will see her on Christmas eve.
Ruth, the kids are so lucky to have you. I would enjoy such a wonderful experience. I hope you find some fresh fruits and vegetables near where you are.
I made a large pot of veg. bean soup today and it was perfect weather for it.

Wishing all of you a peaceful Sunday.

It's really windy today. I'm doing the wash & hanging it out to dry. Starting tomorrow night we're supposed to have several rainy days. We waiting until after we see the doctor, on Monday, to plan on any yard work. I'm hopeful that she's found out something from all the tests they've done, to see what caused the passing out & what the brain scar means.

We went to my daughters for our Thanksgiving dinner as my grandson has to report on Monday for basic training & won't be here for Thanksgiving or Christmas.

We've made two trips tp Agape House already & have a start on a third. Bill's alread gotten the lumber to make my new book shelves.. Some things I wasn't ready to give up on the other trips are going on this one. The house already feels lighter. Bill's cleaning off the back porch/deck right now. I've wanted that done since spring. He's even getting rid of some odds & ends that he doesn't feel like he needs any more.

Sounds like everyone's busy so hope everyone has a good & safe day! emoticon

Ruth, what a wonderful way to get your "grandmothering" in! I know many who would just be sad and do nothing if they had none.

My granddaughters are going to their mother's for Christmas (they live with their dad), so we have decided to combine Christmas and Thanksgiving at my son's house this year. Much to do before then. I wasn't expecting to move it all up a month, but I will persevere. They are worth the effort.

Love to you all.

This has been a productive day, but I'm tired. I plan to clean out 5 bookshelves in my study, and I did. I really got exercise climbing up and down removing books, dusting and climbing back up to put them in place.
There are still areas to do, but that might be Monday.

Now, I plan to take a hot bath, and relax.

Everyone, take some time for yourself. I don't want to be the only one.

Ruth,
I know that your heart is breaking over the problems that some of the children, but remember you are making a difference. It must be overwhelming at times. I do hope that you take your trip to the market and get some fresh foods. Do you know any of the other volunteers?

Viv, don't work too hard. You are just too busy.

I hope that all my Spark Friends that haven't been feeling well are better now.

Have a relaxing weekend.

Hi all, sure have missed reading your chit chats. Have been at my Mom's (91) taking care of business and she does not have a computer or wi-fi. Just out of the electronic loop while there. Penny, I sure hope your fall was nothing serious. I have heard of that happening to people and it is not serious. Something about a drop in blood pressure. There is even a funny name for it. Hope that is all it is.
Ruth--what a great experience you are having and how nice of you to find the time to share it with us.
Everyone sounds as if they are enjoying their Fall. Weather here in Texas is great too. But we still need rain. Now they are predicting another year of dry weather. Hope not, but what can you do.
All stay well,

Mary

Hi Everyone;

Just to set everyone of you lucky wonderful grandmothers straight, I am getting much more out of this experience in Guatemala than I am giving. Those who have grandchildren (I don´t and probably won´t) know what a wonderful experience it it to play, cuddle, teach little ones...that is what I am doing, it my grandparenthood. I don´t want to think about what age will do to me and when I won´t be able to travel and do this. The children call me ¨mami¨but I know this is my grandparental experience.

Today I took the little deaf girl out in the playground for a one on one experience on the slides. She was screaming the whole time, I thought that she was afraid to climb the stairs and go down the slide, though I went down with her. Later I realized that she was screaming because there was a man with an electric saw in the yard cutting tiles, and I think the noise or the vibrations that she could sense hurt her ears. I ended up holding her and patting her to calm down for most of the time we were there.

A new little girl came in today, and like others on the first day she was scared, didn´t want to participate in the games or activities. She cried all the time. She told the social worker that she wanted to go home. My heart went out to her when the social worker told her that her home didn´t exist any more. I hope she will be able to be integrated with the other children and enjoy what few months she has here before she is placed in a foster home or put up for adoption.

This weekend I am planning on going to Chichicastenango to the Sunday market. I hope to spend overnight there and eat some fruit and vegetables. So far today I´ve gotten in 2.16 miles and I still have to walk home. Have a great weekend everyone.

Happy vet's day everyone!

Roslyn, keep us informed on what is found.

Pat, I used to teach, but I think once I retire, I'd like to volunteer with the younger ones. I taught high school. Not enough patience for that anymore.

Mo, Kelli is much better (thanks for asking) and the boyfriend seems stuck at her hip, so we'll see when a little more time has passed.

Good weekend!

Good morning team. I'll be walking later and running errands.

I also want to thank all our Veterans who so bravely have served our country. Today is the day set aside to honor them but I feel they should be thought of and honored every day. Without them we wouldn't have the freedoms we do.

Happy Veterans Day!

Today is Veteran;s Day 11-11-11. A great day to memorialize the sacrifice of our men and women in uniform. A special Thank you to the families who support them. It is hard to be at home taking care of your children while worrying that your loved one will never be home. God Bless all who serve.

Ruth – what a great loving thing you are doing for those children. I admire you so much!
Pat – I admire you , too, for the tutoring you do.
Roslyn – I had a tear in my corona about 10 years ago that was very similar to what you are describing. Laser surgery fixed it good as new – but you do want to get it seen to sooner than later. Good thoughts and prayers coming your way.
Jeanne – take your D and feel the hugs coming your way. How is your hubby’s knee doing? Is Kelli back in the swing of things with new boyfriend and animal family?
Kay – I’m sure the visit to the care home was a bit poignant . You are such a giving person, too.
Viv – hope you are feeling better. This months tips are great!
As I look at all the things team members do that are meaningful in one way or another, I am proud to be a member here. If I didn’t mention you by name - it’s because it’s late and I am getting sleepy
