Interesting about flaxseeds, i have never seen them on sale here but we do have a Holland and Barrett health food shop i shall go and see if they have them there.
One thing i do swear by is Manuka honey from New Zealand, it is quite expensive but at the first sign of a sore throat or a cold, i take a teaspoon with some hot water and a squeeze of lemon juice, it has anti bacterial properties. Some times it is nice just to spread it on a piece of hot buttered toast.

I haven't read that yet.

I buy the ground seeds and keep them in my freezer in a sealed plastic container. They don't stick together when they freeze, so it's easy to measure out what you want and put it right back in the freezer. I've been doing this for about 2 yrs.

I can definitely tell if I miss a day of flaxseeds!

What a timely note since I just read an article on SP about flaxseeds. It said the ground is very hard to keep but buying the whole seeds and grinding yourself is easier. I can buy the whole seeds in bulk at my grocery and will try them. The article mentioned so many ways to use them.

I recently mentioned that I put ground flaxseed into my yogurt and that reminded me what an important part of my diet it is.

I use cold milled ground flaxseed that I buy at GNC. I eat yogurt twice a day and use one heaping tablespoon of the flax in each one. You should start with a smaller amount until you see how it affects your body and you can increas the amount you use over time.

It is also good in oatmeal and even sprinkled over salads or in soup.

Ground flaxseed is good for your digestive system, your colon and you will never need a laxative or have the side effects that laxatives cause.

Surprisingly, it is also good for hemorrhoids, lol. Usually you think of a topical cream for that problem, but if you eat ground flaxseed every day, your problem will go away.

Hope this isn't TMI, lol. I'm just convinced it's good for your body.

I just take a multivitamin with lunch and Oscal with Vitamin D in the a.m. & p.m. Have thought about fish oil supplements but haven't done it yet. Try to eat fish about twice a week.

I take 1 Berocca effervescent tablet dissolved in water every morning this contains all the b vitamins and vitamin c,i also take 1 1000mg capsule of cod liver oil with omega 3.
I also take 60mg CoEnyme Q-10 everyday.
I don't think supplements are a substitute for a healthy diet but i think there are times when you don't get all the nutrients you need. i know i feel better when i take them but whether or not it is all in the mind, i just dont know.

Does anyone take supplements? I'd be interested in hearing what you take and why.

I just started fish oil supplements. I know it's important to have a good brand, so that the fish oil is not contaminated. I bought mine from my chiropractor who takes them himself.

Fish oil/omega 3's are purported to be good for so many things. My aim is to keep inflammation under control. My muscles seem particularly susceptible to it and consequently cause me a lot of pain.

I also take Vitamin C, because I have found, from personal experience, that it keeps me from getting stuffy head and sinus problems. I can definitely feel the difference.

This site has an A-Z list of health conditions, but I haven't found any organized info on supplements or pharmaceuticals. Have I missed it or is it not here?

The food we eat nowadays may not always have all the nutrients we think it does. So, my question here is, do you add supplements to your eating regime to improve your diet?

If I had to live off of fish I would have a weight problem the other way emoticon
BUT I am tring to work it in at least once a week maybe twice. I do like tuna and am learning to eat tilapia. I was also a ww when we had to eat it 5x a week it was awful, but I lost weight.
But I am going to stick to what this site says my calorie intake should be and use the nutrition journal to keep a record. I believe that will be as important as eating fish.

I found Trader Joe's Champagne Pear Vinaigrette with Gorgonzola salad dressing 2 tablespoons = 45 calories . And it tastes really great. If you have a Trader Joe's it is near the salads, refrigerated. YUMMM.

As for my fish, I bake or grill, Whitefish, Salmon.
I stir fry shrimp, scallops. I bake scalops, salmon, whitefish, flounder, blue fish. I only use tuna in a salad.

NEW FOOD!

Well, new to me, anyway. Last night I tried a Morning Star product - Spicy Black Bean Burger. It has 120 Cals, 4 grms fat, 4 gms fiber, an almost equal amount of carbs/protein which is good. And it was delicious!

I put it on lite bread with the usual condiments and veggies I'd normally put on a burger. Yummy.

I used to focus on trying a new food once a week but have fallen away from that path lately. I guess with this product and the fish, I'm back to trying new things.

You tried anything new lately that you really liked or want to tell us about? Sometimes something is so YUCKY you want to pass that on, too, lol.

Wow, thanks for all the great ideas!

Irene, I haven't tried blackened fish, sounds good.

I'm going to try all your ideas. I like wrapping it in foil and putting it in the oven or on the grill.

Judi, I totally forgot about shrimp! I love shrimp cocktail, so I'll try your suggestions for cooking shrimp, too.

I tried the Parmesan Crusted Tilapia at Olive Garden, when my Girlfriend Group ate there last, and was really surprised at how good it was!

When you buy fish, what do you normally buy for baking, steaming or broiling? Salmon, tilapia, and ? ? ?

You ladies are great! But I already knew that, lol.

Try having shrimp. You can put shrimp on tin foil with any spices you like and put on the grill (leave open in foil). If you have skewers, that is awesome. Also shrimp for lunch, with sauce or in your salad. Or take the shrimp and chop it up with onions, celery, corn and anything else you want to throw in. Mix it with a little Italian or Vinaigrette dressing. Yum. With fish, you have to think out of the box. Although shrimp is a little pricey, you don't need that much because it is "meaty". Try scallops. I buy baby scallops (bay) NOT the big ones! and dip them in a little milk, and then shake them up in a bag with flavored bread crumbs, spread it on a baking pan that has had Pam added to the pan, then bake in the oven. The scallops with be Sweet and tender. (Big ones come out chewy) emoticon

There aren't too many kinds of fish I like. We have fish about once a week and if I'm backed into a corner and forced to go to a restaurant, I'll order grilled or broiled salmon with nothing on it.

Fat is the thing I go under every day. I've starte using olive oil and balsamic vinegar on my salad but even with that I'm under on fat.

Karen have you tried Blackened fish? I buy the blackened spice at the store, spray the fish with butter or olive oil spray, sprinkle on the spice and grill it on a cast iron griddle on my stove. Or you can grill it outdoors. It's yummy.

I'm going to try several things with fish. You know down here in Texas we fry everything! Meat, fish, veggies, even bread, lol.

Gotta learn to break that habit. Actually, I don't fry anything anymore, just didn't know what to do with fish!

I like the grilled fish packets Nupath mentioned but also like steaming, with lemon and fresh herbs. I am also trying different kinds of fish. Salmon is wonderful with a pat of dill "butter" (your healthy choice here) placed on top to melt as soon as it comes out of the oven, steamer, etc.

I have to work on fats, too, and definitely fiber.

Since I stopped eating red meat, I really like fish. It is easy to prepare, and takes little time to cook. Only thing is I like to chew, and because it is a soft food, I usually have to have a big salad, or corn on the cob with it. I'm still working on that issue. Also, when out in a restaurant, order a salad but instead of grilled chicken, ask for grilled salmon in the salad. Just as tasty, and you will be eating more fish!

This is how I make my salmon, and it works well with just about any fish. I put the fish on tin foil, cover fish with lemon pepper seasoning, put sliced green peppers, onions, tomatoes round the outside of the fish, season the veggies, tuck in all together tight. Place on the grill(like you were baking it) and cook about 10-15 minutes depending on the thickness of your fish. For salmon it is 15-20 minutes. It is very easy, no fishy smell in the house too. emoticon

I was vegetarian from about 1994 to 2006. I stopped eating meat because my husband refuses to eat fish or chicken, and I'm not crazy about beef. I went back to meat because I got bored with the cooking limitations, and I wish wish wish my husband would eat chicken! Poultry is about 1/3 of every cookbook for the past 30 years, and I would love to cook with it.

I improved my diet by not eating red meat any more. Occasionally I really really want a hamburger, but I will get a turkey burger. I know this is healthier, no eating red meat. It took about 2 months to adjust, but now I try different foods without red meat. Give it a try! And I don't eat Tofu!

Sorry, Karen, can't hop on that bandwagon.

I need to add fat, believe it or not. I hardly ever get into my range there. So tonight I had 1/2 tbs. olive oil that I dipped my rye bread into. Pretty tasty.

I know that more fat would keep me less hungry and therefore be a winner, but I am hard headed and have a time getting past the calorie thing.

I'm going to start tracking the number of servings of fish in my diet each week.

Since I don't eat deep fried catfish anymore, (this IS Texas, you know, lol)
I forget to eat fish, so I've added another goal to track:

Eat fish three times a week.
