I swing through nights and bring alot of food with me. I don't always get a chance to at it all! Hard boild eggs, cottage cheese, baby carrots. My favorite - cocoa roasted almond!

I usually have a sack full of food so I don't get the idea that I have to order out. I usually bring a pre-made salad and left overs. Snacks, I usually take along at least one fruit, cheese and triscuts, my oatmeal pack (ready oatmeal, 2 tbls walnuts, 2 tbls dried cranberries), yogurt and a protein shake. Most of the time I don't eat everything I bring, but at least I know I have something if I do.

I work 7p to 7a. I eat supper before I leave for work. Around midnight I have a lean cuisine, smart ones, etc with a piece of fruit and some yogurt. I also bring oatmeal with me and eat that around 0600 that way I'm not eating right before I go to bed.

I am so greatful that Daisyane asked this question way back in January. I've just started Spraking and getting on the right track...and I was going to ask the same question. My problem is that I do a 6pm Sat. to 7am Sun. private duty shift (alternating pt. from trach collar to vent and back) while going to college during the week. I've been following most of the food suggestions provided. By the way, does anyone have any suggestions for trying to stay awake other than eating?

I work 7a-7p, usually 2 or 3 in a row and I do a rotation of days and nights. When I'm on nights I usually eat "dinner" at home before I go to work, drink lots of water, some coffee. Then I bring my "lunch" with me, leftovers or a sandwich or salad or something and then some light snacks for the rest of the night ... fruit, veggies, yogurt, cheese. Then I have my breakfast in the morning before I go to bed.
I find between 2am and 6am is the hardest, you get that gut rot feeling. Sometimes I'll have toast or a bagel during that time or close to the end of my shift, but then I'm hungry again by the time I get home (8am) and have a bowl of cereal before I go to bed. I know that's not the wisest choice cause then it's like I'm eating 2 breakfasts. So my plan still needs some tweaking .... I'm not perfect! Still learning!
Hope this helps!

After the last two days, I don't think I would have survived without my food plan. It was very busy 5-6 patients each day with admits and discharged so I ended up charting on (caring for) 7-8 patients each day as well as covering the LPN who had the same number of patients. Not safe, not smart, nothing I could do to change it.

I packed my small portions of food so I could "grab and go" to eat healthy and stay in my calorie range. The other nurse, LPN, had a sandwich and a protein drink. She ate the sandwich on the way home.

Packing ahead and planning the calories as well as small portions so you can eat at odd moments if necessary are really important day or night shift.

I work in a NICU and PICU, the problem is that I have to travel over 100 miles to work, so I stay with a friend while I work my shifts, then go home! I have frozen meals in the freezer both in the NICU and PICU. I usually only eat when I am at work, I try and have something when I get to work before shift report, then I have my meal around 1am, I have either a meal from the freezer or I get something from the cafeteria - usually fruit, cheese or frozen yogurt. Sometimes I will have breakfast when I finish work, depends on how tired I am. I drink water to keep me awake!
Christine
PS I also keep a small blender in my locker and sometimes I make smoothies with frozen fruit - that is my plan for tonight :)

I work the 7p-7a shift in a rural hospital/ER - six 12 hr shifts in a row. It's just myself and a 2nd lisc. In the past there were nights where I didn't have time to eat at all. And then there were nights I'd eat the healthy choices I brought and them some. Now I make a point of eating a healthy meal prior to going to work. I bring several healthy choices (fruit, grilled chicken, almonds) to eat later on. I find it has helped me to stay on track. I'm working on figuring out the exercise thing now. Like an earlier post, I can barely keep my eyes open once I'm home. One step at a time........

I am a 7pm -7am nurse in a small local hospital working the newborn nursery, thats my morning like those coming in at 7am...sometimes i just jump right into my lunch(smart ones) and try to eat a few snacks(breakfast bars, yogurt, sugafree puddings, . I am trying to drink more water eat more healthier ..passing the sonic up on my way home. eating a bowl of cereal before bed and i try for a banana as well .. trying to stay away from the snack machines LOL I do drink diet cokes and coffee through the night as well.My trouble is getting in some exercises before bed time.At the end of my shift i can barely make it to my car .Thats another reason i have decided to become a bit more faithful to my self and work hard to keep my goals,Ild like to know how others eat on night shift.

I pre pack my lunches no matter what shift I work. Tuna salad, deviled eggs, string cheese, big salads with tons of veggies, soups, etc... I keep stuff by me to satisfy my cravings. Carry a water bottle as well. Pass a couple of meds, take a big drink.

I always ate a lunch on my lunch break on 11-7. My beverage was always water, not coffee. I always had dinner with my family and ate breakfast when I got home from 11-7 with my family before they left for work or school.

Since working nights has you sleeping during the day, taking "lunch" to work will help you stay less hungry and tempted. Then you can go home, eat a light breakfast, go to bed and get up in time for the evening meal.

I usually pack a couple of bags of veggies, a piece or two of fruit and perhaps a small piece of chocolate for my snacks. I will either bring a sandwich, veggie soup, leftovers or frozen dinner.

And lots of water.

I do a rotation of days and nights so I try to stay on a meal schedule I guess you'd say. I bring a light lunch normally with me on nights and have fruit or some veggies with me so I'm not tempted by the vending machine! That normally keeps the munchies away.

I eat dinner before I go to work for 7P-7A shift,so I just usually eat a piece of fruit or a handful of pretzels that my co-workers usually help me eat :)

hi there.......when i worked nights i would bring in my own food and snacks that way i could control what i ate!!!
are you working A 12 hour night????
all the best with your changes....blessings and hugs......lita

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results.
When you get to a plateau, think of it as a landing on the stairway to your goal. And
maintenance is a lifelong plateau, so a bit of "rehearsal" for maintenance isn't the worst thing in the world

I work night shift only a few days month. This is my first since starting spark. The usual for everyone at work is ordering from the near pizza joint or chinese or hot dog shoppe. Now Should i eat dinner before work, and take a healthy snaack or just take dinner to work. A little worried about getting the munchies around 2am
